CONCERT REPORT: Particle Kid @ Sunset Tavern, Seattle, WA - Feb 6

Here is a concert report of Particle Kid (aka Micah Nelson) @ Sunset Tavern in Seattle, WA on Feb 6 by "Your Brother Alan in Seattle".

Speaking of live music, I recently got to go see Micah Nelson’s band Particle Kid at a tiny venue. This is the 2nd time I have seen them live and both times were fantastic & magical.

I arrived after the show began & missed some of the first set. Micah Nelson's guitar player Milo Gonzales opened the show. Micah joined him on 2nd guitar & they had a female singer whose name I missed. 2nd act was Lila Forde. She was very good.

Lila Forde

She covered "Woodstock" & "Can’t Find May Way Home". She played keyboards solo & she sang & played well.  Lila’s version of "Woodstock" was cool.

Particle Kid: This young band is exciting & they have huge potential.

I was enjoying the show standing 10’ back from Artist or so. A guy named Bruce recognized me from the TW blog. He told me he liked my writing at first. I said “You might have me confused with someone else; I’m not a writer.” He said Sure you are, from Thrasher’s Wheat.” Oh right! Hahaha.

Then Bruce introduced me to Bob, another TW regular. Bob builds custom guitars & he once gave one to Neil. Neil then gave him tickets to the Bridge School shows for years. Bob showed me a photo of Neil with the guitar.

Yes, Bruce & Bob, a couple of Thrasher’s Wheat regulars. Good people, & coincidentally they were on an interstellar journey, as was I!

Particle Kid is the right show to hit for a psychedelic experience. We were hitchhiking through the galaxy together.

Particle Kid dabbles in many forms. I loved their set. Micah is a great singer & guitar player, like his brother Lukas & their Dad Willie.

What a cool scene we have here at Thrasher’s Wheat! It was so nice to meet Bruce & Bob. They had a 3rd friend with them, like minded, whose name I forgot.

Micah Nelson is an original and very creative Artist who uses multiple mediums, film projection, etc during his sets.

He is a fantastic songwriter & performer. His rhythm guitar skills are impressive. He uses all kinds of lesser used chords.

Micah can sing just like his dad but that was not part of this night’s show . He has his own identity & his band is a unique & fun group to watch.

I have all of his albums except “Particle War” (with Sunny War, a collaboration. They do a gorgeous cover of the Clash’s “Lover’s Rock.” They make it their own. The Clash’s version being way different than this worthy new creation.

Micah was breaking down gear after the show. Thrasher had told me to say Hello from Thrasher’s Wheat, so I did. Micah was glad to hear that message & he returned the greeting & said to say Thanks!

I told him about Bruce & Bob also being TW fans. He was glad to see us all there.

Micah was specific in that he, the band & Neil really appreciate Thrasher’s Wheat. He said TW helps them keep track of things & more. And again, he expressed gratitude for this fine blog.

And he said that the band would be recording a new album next month!

Sunny War is recommended to check out. Go see Particle Kid & get lifted up by his live music. Variety is the spice of life!

Thank you Thrasher / Thrashette!

Your Brother Alan in Seattle

Micah Nelson on How He Got Neil Young Back on the Road | Rolling Stone

Micah Nelson Awaits:
DangerBird Descends for "The Hurricane"
August 10th - Richmond, VA

"Neil’s in the zone, he’s riding the wave and he wants to keep riding it. So yeah, look out for us."  ~~ Micah Nelson

RS: The Chrome Hearts formed just a few months later. What was the spark that led to that?

Micah:  I knew how bummed out Neil was. He wasn’t feeling like making music. He was really sick. He was trying to get over that, and just get his energy back. And then he was really bummed out about what happened, and how it all went down. And that just kind of drained him a lot, and doused this flame.

I was like, “Is Neil fading away? This is unacceptable.” So I’d call him a lot and check in on him and remind him how he’s not old. I was like, “Do whatever you got to do, man. Take your time. I get it. Recharge. The tank has got to fill back up, and that can take time, but whenever you want to do the thing again, just call me up and I’m ready to go.”

I kept that idea going and reminding him that he didn’t play for four years, and he felt the rust. And then it took a few years once he started again to really, really get back in the groove.

He started with the solo [Coastal] tour, which was great. I think coming out from that hiatus and doing the Crazy Horse tour, we might not have lasted as long as we did even this time. He had to rebuild his energy.

I said to him, “Cory [McCormick] and Anthony [LoGerfo] from the Real, they’re down. I’ve talked to them.” And my brother [Lukas] … when that band went on their hiatus, he had written a letter to Neil just saying, “Hey, just because I’m not playing with these guys anymore, don’t feel weird about taking them out. They’re down to play with you, and they’re ready to go. So whenever you want to do it, don’t even hesitate.”
...

RS: The Chrome Hearts tour got off to a really strong start in Europe. Fans were buzzing from the first show in Switzerland.

Micah: Yeah, the audiences really brought a lot of positive supportive energy, and it kind of took us by surprise. We were really energized by the people, and that helped. The Europe tour was challenging in a lot of ways, travel wise and routing and buses breaking down. But the shows were super energizing and the audiences … just cheering at places you’re not even expecting them to. Those kind of things, they really light the way.

RS: The set list was full of surprises. I never thought I’d hear “Be the Rain” or “Sun Green Again,” let alone “Looking Forward” and “Name of Love” from the CSNY reunion albums.
Micah: That’s the other cool thing about the Chrome Hearts that I think keeps Neil energized. He knows he can do anything. Whatever era of Neil or whatever deep cuts, we can learn stuff pretty quick and deliver something. And especially because we have Spooner, it’s like we can do the Harvest Moon stuff in a way that really feels like the albums, and we can go delicate and we can get loud and ragged and do everything in between.
...

RS: A lot of fans followed the tour around. Did you see the same faces on the rail most every night?

Micah: Oh yeah. You start to recognize all the Rusties that are at every show. Some of them were in their twenties. It wasn’t just a bunch of old dudes in flannel shirts. We love those guys, of course, they’re fantastic. But especially in Europe, you had such a mix of different types of people, different age groups, and they’d be at every show.

...

RS: Do you think Neil will play in the States again next year? Overseas?

Micah: It’s really hard to say. We’ve talked about Japan. We’ve talked about we could do Europe again, and do places that we didn’t even hit last time, all new places. Same with the States. We’ve talked about a Gulf of Mexico tour. That would be fun. We didn’t really hit that region last time. There’s a lot of fans down there.

RS: Do you think Crazy Horse is ever going to play again or is Ralph just not up for it?

Micah: It’s hard to say. I didn’t realize how unhealthy he was when we were on tour. I know that drums are probably the least forgiving instrument when you’re getting older to keep up a certain level of power behind your playing. So I don’t know how much of it was that, and how much of it was just the fact that he was not well. But he’s a tough dude. I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back and was healthy and feeling like he could do it again. I can’t really say for sure. It’s really up to those guys and up to Neil.

RS: I really hope another Chrome Hearts tour happens next year. This one was really special.

Micah: My feeling is, barring disaster … Neil’s in the zone, he’s riding the wave and he wants to keep riding it. So yeah, look out for us.

Review: Particle Kid (Micah Nelson), @ Barboza, Seattle, WA - 4/4/24
by Our Brother Alan in Seattle

The show was was fantastic. Micah played rhythm guitar all night while the other guitarist played lead. The band is made up of top musicians. The bass player is very talented and energetic. Micah sings well and manages to deliver sounds with this band that are unique and effective. He runs the gamut from grunge to psychedelic, folk Rock to acid jazz, and then some!

The multimedia projected Art / video was tremendously Artistic. He makes all of the posters for the bands. My friends & I met up with Micah and the Bass player after the small crowd thinned out. Nice guys, no ego, pleasant and friendly. As we talked, I praised his performance & told him I was headed to San Diego to see him with Neil & the Horse soon. Micah has talent and power that will fit right in with the band on Neil's tour. He plays just rhythm, so this is perfect.

They did a song last night in which they seemed to be tipping the hat to Neil's Cortez the Killer. It felt like the real thing. Get ready to be impressed by Particle Kid front man Micah Nelson. He is the real thing, and I have no doubt the band will take flight!

Particle Kid bandleader Micah Nelson is an amazingly talented guitarist, singer, & multimedia Artist! Don’t miss Particle Kid on tour! They are unique in sound, not just a “psychedelic Grunge meets folk rainbow jams, acid jazz meets punk, Rock meets experimental.” a great band with tons of soul & talent!

INTERVIEW: Micah Nelson on Joining Neil Young and Crazy Horse: ‘I’ve Been Rehearsing for This My Whole Life’ | Rolling Stone

Particle Kid (aka Micah Nelson)

A major interview with Micah Nelson on Neil Young's upcoming  “Love Earth Tour”: w/ Crazy Horse where the guitarist, "who cut his teeth on the road with dad Willie, breaks down his journey from loving the band as a kid to actually joining the band.

From Micah Nelson on Joining Neil Young and Crazy Horse: ‘I’ve Been Rehearsing for This My Whole Life’  | Rolling Stone by Andy Greene:

Rolling Stone: Tell me what Neil Young’s music meant to you as a kid.

Micah Nelson: Neil was always just kind of this being, this overarching energy in my life, and that music is always there.

But it would kind of come and go in cycles. I would sort of venture off into these other worlds, and then he would come back into my life in these moments that always were so prescient, so synchronized, and exactly what I needed at that moment to remind me about rock & roll, and rawness and just honesty and songwriting and how that transcends everything else in production or sonics…All that shit.

There’s just something so primal and primitive about Neil, especially when he is with Crazy Horse. I saw them at Golden Gate Park at the Outside Lands Festival in 2012, it was a full circle moment and just sort of a slap in the face. It reminded me what I felt like I’d gotten too far from.

Neil Young & Micah Nelson
Song of the Day - 5/29/18: MONSANTO YEARS

...

Rolling Stone: When did you learn you were playing Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Tonight’s the Night straight through? [see Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse @ Roxy Night Club, Los Angeles, CA - September 2023]

Micah Nelson: About a week before.

He said, “Oh, hey, we got Nils back.” So I had already kind of started learning all Nils parts on guitar and I was like, “Okay, this is what I’m going to be doing.” And then, “Oh, great, we got Nils. Okay, cool. He can play all his original stuff.” And Neil says, “Listen to the Ben Keith stuff.”

I don’t know how to play the pedal steel. I had never played the lap steel. So I’m like, “Okay, shit, I can probably fake this on my Telecaster with some delay and a volume pedal.”

So I started learning how to kind of fake the parts and get the spirit of the parts down. And then once we got there, Bill Asher was tech’ing at the time and he said, “Hey, I’ve got this lap steel that I made. It’s got palm benders on it, so it sounds more like a pedal steel. You can make it bend to the fifth or the fourth or whatever.” I was like, “Yeah, I’ll try it out.” And that was two days before the show.

I basically spent the next 48 hours learning Ben Keith’s parts on the lap steel with the palm benders and doing the best I can. And thankfully this is Tonight’s the Night where the guys making this record were fucked up out of their head. This is drunk Ben Keith. And so I was like, “Okay, I can fake this.”

But I also ended up falling in love with that instrument, and it was so much fun. And this is the story of me and Neil. He pushes me all the time to be better.

And those types of experiences where you’re under pressure of making the music as good as it can be, I think have made me a better musician and a better person.

INTERVIEW: Micah Nelson | Guitar World

Particle Kid (aka Micah Nelson)
  (Click photo to enlarge)

As a member of Neil Young's band Crazy Horse, Micah Nelson has to channel Danny Witten, Nils Lofgren and Frank ‘Poncho’ Sampedro as he discusses in an interview with Guitar World by Andrew Daly.

“In January of 2023, Neil called and asked if I’d like to join Crazy Horse,” Nelson tells Guitar World. “I was born in the Year of the Horse, so of course I said ‘yes!’ After I agreed, the first thing I thought was, ‘I’m gonna need a new amp.’ I wasn't sure what Neil wanted – I didn't know if he wanted me to be Nils, Poncho or Danny.”

The answer was simple: Young advised Nelson to “be true to the music”. Which makes sense, as the proverbial godfather of grunge has spent well over 50 years doing just that. “My approach has always been to complement whatever the music needs,” Nelson says. “But Neil has always challenged me to push myself beyond the norm in many situations, which became a big thing.”

One look at Willie Nelson’s battered Martin N-20 acoustic, Trigger, explains all you need to know about the rustic wisdom the elder musician has imparted to his children. Asked how he’s injected that soothsaying into his career, Micah says: “I’m sure I could write a song that sounds like Willie Nelson or Neil Young.

“I could deliberately be like, ‘I’m gonna rip off Neil Young right now,’ just like he ripped off Bob Dylan, and like my dad ripped off Django. I could do that all day, and there’s nothing wrong with that.’”

But he doesn’t believe that’s what would be going on. “We’re just borrowing timeless things and being passed down,” he argues. “So I’ll keep digging into similar patterns, and I’ll keep exploring myself. That's just part of being fractal. It’s all a part of me. My roots and lineage will remain, but where I take that remains to be seen.”

Speakin' Out: Neil Young Fanzine, Issue #3

Speakin' Out
Neil Young Fanzine, Issue #3

Speakin' Out is a new Neil Young fanzine and issue #3 has just been published.

Speakin' Out -- a UK based fanzine dedicated to the music of Neil Young -- features concert reviews, photos and all sorts of interesting items.

In an interview with Micah Nelson -- "Particle Kid: Take The Best You Can Today!" -- he discusses the TRANS animated film (Thanks Ian, NYUA, & HtH!):
Micah Nelson: I have been working off on for over a year now on the TRANS project with Neil.

There will be an animated video for each song. It's like a dystopian sci-fi rock opera art film. Very strange and very cool.

A totally DIY project, using a ton of different mediums all stitched together like an animated collage. It is raw as hell. Neil is re-releasing the TRANS EP the way it was originally meant to be heard, and seen as an animated film.

It's a dream project."
Certainly a welcome addition to the Rust community after the demise of NYAS's long standing, legendary and thoroughly indispensable Broken Arrow Magazine.

We obtained our 1st copy of Speakin' Out while attending Neil Young's solo concerts in Chicago in 2018. So a big thanks for our nice gift Reluctant Mosher!

More information at Speakin' Out: Neil Young Fanzine. All profits go to grassroots music venues and projects.

Also, see Speakin' Out: Neil Young Fanzine, Issue #2.

So, keep on Speakin' Out and we'll see you down the road!

Interviews: Willie Nelson, Micah Nelson & Lukas Nelson - Luck Reunion Webcast | Rolling Stone

Willie Nelson, Micah Nelson & Lukas Nelson
Luck Reunion Webcast - 3/20/20

Willie Nelson, Micah Nelson and Lukas Nelson performed together last week for the Luck Reunion Webcast in lieu of the concert which had been canceled due to the CV-19 outbreak.

A couple of interviews with Micah Nelson and Lukas Nelson were held last week in advance of the webcast with Rolling Stone by Patrick Doyle: Lukas Nelson on Finding Hope Under Self-Quarantine With Family Time | Rolling Stone and Micah Nelson: Crisis Could Be an ‘Opportunity for Rapid Evolution’ | Rolling Stone.

Lukas Nelson

Lukas Nelson says of father Willie: “My dad would never have given himself the chance to rest. We would have never had this time together if we had not been forced.” From Lukas Nelson on Finding Hope Under Self-Quarantine With Family Time | Rolling Stone:
Lukas Nelson: "We’re really blessed with technology now.

We can do anything pretty easily to uplift each other from where we are. So this virus, in some ways, couldn’t have come at a better time, because of the interconnectedness we all have with technology. And it’s going to make us appreciate human connection even more, once we’re able to get back on the road and be more able to gather again, which could be a while.

You can look at this as a blessing in disguise in some ways.

My dad would never have given himself the chance to rest, and we would have never had this time together if we had not been forced to. And he’s getting up there. The years would be going by, and we would just be grinding on the road. I think last year I had three weeks off, and the rest of the time was work. Every day has been nice, just sitting playing chess with dad, being at home, and watching the horses. We’re really really grateful that we have this; there’s a lot of musicians that are really going through a hard time right now. My band, everybody, has to really be careful financially. Everyone does; small businesses are closing.

My dad says a lot of the same things.

We’ve been discussing this, and you have to look at the positive in everything. He’s concerned for all of the people not able to work. I’m concerned about that too, and I’m hoping the government is going to do the best they can, and I think they’re doing a good job now. I think they’re going to do a good job of bailing out the working people.

My dad is sort of a Taoist, as I am.

The greatest thing you could read right now is Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations,
it’s like the Western version of Taoism. He wrote these notes when he was in battle to himself, he didn’t care anything about his own ego. He was a very selfless person, so these notes were not even intended to be published, and they’re very wise, very much the way dad looks at things.

Micah Nelson talks about the “positive silver linings” that may come out of the coronavirus from Micah Nelson: Crisis Could Be an ‘Opportunity for Rapid Evolution’ | Rolling Stone:
What are you doing with your unexpected time at home?

Micah Nelson: "Trying to get some food growing and building the topsoil here at Luck, giving back to the soil. I’m applying mycorrhizal fungi, planting carrots, turnips, peas, cabbage, lettuce, kale, hemp, etc., getting a beekeeping and worm-composting situation going as well. I’ve been wanting to spend time on that for years now — finally have an opportunity! However unfortunate the reasons…

I’m also working on a new Particle Kid album.

I had a few days in the studio out here with my trio before I had to send them home before the shit hit the fan. We got some great stuff, though, so I’ve just been mostly mixing those new songs. My dad played and sang on one yesterday. J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. played some guitar on another new one from afar. Fortunately, today’s technology allows artists to collaborate long-distance, at least if they’ve got home studios. I’m working on the TRANS 2020 animation project with Neil [Young], knitting weird hats, [my wife] Alex is making sock puppets. We are gonna do a dumb little livestream variety show called “A Quarantine Home Companion.” I think humor is very important in all this and will save us. I got plenty to keep me busy.

Funny how pre-matrix shutdown we never seemed to have the time, so it’s pretty weird to actually have the time now. They’ve canceled the world!

I mostly empathize with folks who either don’t have a home or are struggling to keep the lights on during this fucked-up Twilight Zone episode. Many positive silver-lining things are happening, however, like precious ecosystems finally getting some time to regenerate. It’s like the Earth is getting a few days off from being raped and pillaged for a change. This whole thing is a wake-up call to the reality that humans are not actually running the show and never really have been. Maybe it’s the slap in the face we need to finally snap out of our collective ignorance that we are one and the same with the ecosystem, and not superior … I dunno."

Is there anything else you want to say to your fans right now?

Micah Nelson: "Yes, something my friend John reminded me of: “During the plague in Isaac Newton’s time, he had just completed study at Oxford. He was slotted to join faculty. The epidemic caused the university to shut down for two years, for the same reasons we are.

He went to a private cabin and, instead of regurgitating the words and ideas of others, created the foundation of what would evolve into quantum physics.

Who knows what people will create when they are faced with four walls and the sudden contrast to an assumed freedom? When the beast gives chase, even the most numb of minds remember that they are alive.

I believe that stressing our bodies and minds beyond our comfort zones can unlock genetic potential we didn’t even realize we had.

So, although this is a hard time for many, it is also an opportunity for rapid evolution, not further away from the source, but toward it. These collective challenges may be a catalyst to push us into some higher state of awareness. Food for thought!"

Neil Young: "Super amazing long-form [TRANS] video by The Particle Kid!"

Micah Nelson's Curated Playlist: "WE R NEIL-LIST"

In a response to a Letter to the Editor section on Neil Young Archives, Neil answers a few questions regarding the 1982 album TRANS and a remastered release.

We can expect high resolution 24/192 files and a vinyl release, as well as, a video: "Super amazing long-form [TRANS] video by The Particle Kid!" [Micah Nelson]

TRANS AND HI-RES
Neil Young Archives

Finally. The whole TRANS tale animated. We can't wait for this vision by 'The Particle Kid' to hit Hearse Theater!

Micah Nelson, aka 'The Particle Kid', recently showcased a curated Playlist: "WE R NEIL-LIST" on NYA and used a cropped image from the back cover of the TRANS album.

#ICYMI, Margo Price recently celebrated Jack White's Third Man Records' 10 year anniversary by spinning Neil Young's 'Trans' album -- one of her favorite records.

Also, here's a very in-depth look back at Neil Young’s "controversial" 1982 album ‘Trans’.

New Curated Playlist on Neil Young Archives by PARTICLE KID aka Micah Nelson

New Curated Playlist -
ON A COLLISION COURSE WITH PARTICLE KID

Neil Young Archives Times-Contrarian

A new curated playlist by PARTICLE KID (aka Micah Nelson) has been uploaded on the Neil Young Archives.

You may recall that last month, Kurt Vile curated the very 1st Neil Young Archives Playlist with “Stumblin’ with Neil", which we found to be quite delightful.

Micah Nelson's Curated Playlist: "WE R NEIL-LIST"

In perusing Micah Nelson's listing titled "WE R NEIL-LIST", it's as eclectic as can be expected from a “general visionary weirdo” (hey, the Aspen Times said it first, NYA said it 2nd and TW is saying 3rd!) Seriously?! "ARC Compilation Composition" @ 34+ minutes?! And that's just the 2nd track to weed out the lightweight NON-NEIL-LIST's.

Thanks Micah! enjoy and turn it up.
