Interviews: Willie Nelson, Micah Nelson & Lukas Nelson - Luck Reunion Webcast | Rolling Stone

Willie Nelson, Micah Nelson & Lukas Nelson
    Luck Reunion Webcast - 3/20/20

Willie Nelson, Micah Nelson and Lukas Nelson performed together last week for the Luck Reunion Webcast in lieu of the concert which had been canceled due to the CV-19 outbreak.

A couple of interviews with Micah Nelson and Lukas Nelson were held last week in advance of the webcast with Rolling Stone by Patrick Doyle: Lukas Nelson on Finding Hope Under Self-Quarantine With Family Time | Rolling Stone and Micah Nelson: Crisis Could Be an ‘Opportunity for Rapid Evolution’ | Rolling Stone.

Lukas Nelson says of father Willie: “My dad would never have given himself the chance to rest. We would have never had this time together if we had not been forced.” From Lukas Nelson on Finding Hope Under Self-Quarantine With Family Time | Rolling Stone:
Lukas Nelson: "We’re really blessed with technology now.

We can do anything pretty easily to uplift each other from where we are. So this virus, in some ways, couldn’t have come at a better time, because of the interconnectedness we all have with technology. And it’s going to make us appreciate human connection even more, once we’re able to get back on the road and be more able to gather again, which could be a while.

You can look at this as a blessing in disguise in some ways.

My dad would never have given himself the chance to rest, and we would have never had this time together if we had not been forced to. And he’s getting up there. The years would be going by, and we would just be grinding on the road. I think last year I had three weeks off, and the rest of the time was work. Every day has been nice, just sitting playing chess with dad, being at home, and watching the horses. We’re really really grateful that we have this; there’s a lot of musicians that are really going through a hard time right now. My band, everybody, has to really be careful financially. Everyone does; small businesses are closing.

My dad says a lot of the same things.

We’ve been discussing this, and you have to look at the positive in everything. He’s concerned for all of the people not able to work. I’m concerned about that too, and I’m hoping the government is going to do the best they can, and I think they’re doing a good job now. I think they’re going to do a good job of bailing out the working people.

My dad is sort of a Taoist, as I am.

The greatest thing you could read right now is Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations,
it’s like the Western version of Taoism. He wrote these notes when he was in battle to himself, he didn’t care anything about his own ego. He was a very selfless person, so these notes were not even intended to be published, and they’re very wise, very much the way dad looks at things.

Micah Nelson talks about the “positive silver linings” that may come out of the coronavirus from Micah Nelson: Crisis Could Be an ‘Opportunity for Rapid Evolution’ | Rolling Stone:
What are you doing with your unexpected time at home?

Micah Nelson: "Trying to get some food growing and building the topsoil here at Luck, giving back to the soil. I’m applying mycorrhizal fungi, planting carrots, turnips, peas, cabbage, lettuce, kale, hemp, etc., getting a beekeeping and worm-composting situation going as well. I’ve been wanting to spend time on that for years now — finally have an opportunity! However unfortunate the reasons…

I’m also working on a new Particle Kid album.

I had a few days in the studio out here with my trio before I had to send them home before the shit hit the fan. We got some great stuff, though, so I’ve just been mostly mixing those new songs. My dad played and sang on one yesterday. J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. played some guitar on another new one from afar. Fortunately, today’s technology allows artists to collaborate long-distance, at least if they’ve got home studios. I’m working on the TRANS 2020 animation project with Neil [Young], knitting weird hats, [my wife] Alex is making sock puppets. We are gonna do a dumb little livestream variety show called “A Quarantine Home Companion.” I think humor is very important in all this and will save us. I got plenty to keep me busy.

Funny how pre-matrix shutdown we never seemed to have the time, so it’s pretty weird to actually have the time now. They’ve canceled the world!

I mostly empathize with folks who either don’t have a home or are struggling to keep the lights on during this fucked-up Twilight Zone episode. Many positive silver-lining things are happening, however, like precious ecosystems finally getting some time to regenerate. It’s like the Earth is getting a few days off from being raped and pillaged for a change. This whole thing is a wake-up call to the reality that humans are not actually running the show and never really have been. Maybe it’s the slap in the face we need to finally snap out of our collective ignorance that we are one and the same with the ecosystem, and not superior … I dunno."

Is there anything else you want to say to your fans right now?

Micah Nelson: "Yes, something my friend John reminded me of: “During the plague in Isaac Newton’s time, he had just completed study at Oxford. He was slotted to join faculty. The epidemic caused the university to shut down for two years, for the same reasons we are.

He went to a private cabin and, instead of regurgitating the words and ideas of others, created the foundation of what would evolve into quantum physics.

Who knows what people will create when they are faced with four walls and the sudden contrast to an assumed freedom? When the beast gives chase, even the most numb of minds remember that they are alive.

I believe that stressing our bodies and minds beyond our comfort zones can unlock genetic potential we didn’t even realize we had.

So, although this is a hard time for many, it is also an opportunity for rapid evolution, not further away from the source, but toward it. These collective challenges may be a catalyst to push us into some higher state of awareness. Food for thought!"

Eddie Vedder & Lukas Nelson + Promise Of The Real Cover Neil Young's "Throw Your Hatred Down": OHANA FESTIVAL (Sept 29, 2019)

Eddie Vedder joined Lukas Nelson + Promise Of The Real to cover Neil Young's "Throw Your Hatred Down" at the fourth annual Ohana Festival, at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California on Sept 29, 2019.

Neil Young's “Rockin’ In The Free World” closed out the festival with most acts joining including The Strokes, Red Hot Chili Peppers and others.

Eddie Vedder & Lukas Nelson + Promise Of The Real
    Ohana Festival 2019

From interview with Neil Young on "Mirror Ball world premier with Dave Marsh", August 1995:
Dave Marsh: But one of the clearest and most direct statements on the record is the next thing we're going to hear which is Throw You Hatred Down, which I understand was originally called Throw Your Weapons down.

Neil Young: Yeah, I sometimes mess around with titles for a while and i couldn't figure out which one to use, so I thought I'd just wait until I sang it and see which one I sang first. Because when you're playing, some words work better than others and it's never done and until it's over, you know, it's never finished. And even then, it's not finished because I keep changing it after that anyway.

Dave Marsh: Yeah, well, Throw Your Hatred Down talks about people being divided by their dreams and I think that goes back to the kind of 60s versus 90s versus 70s and 80s or the 60s and the 90s versus the 70s, you know, connecting up to the 70s and 80s sensibility. Am I right about that?

Neil Young: Well, I was thinking about the kids in the schoolyard who are fighting - like just the different ways to go and they're started right there. Just how ... where does it start ... where do we start the conflict? You know, where does it begin? It must begin at birth or something, because conflict is always there. It seems part of our nature, as sad as it sounds. I mean it must just be there ... and I just, you know ... was drifting around in my head trying ... I just had all these images of this ... conflict and people planning ways to overcome evil and evil planning ways to encroach on good.

More on Mirror Ball album reviews, etc.

    "Meanwhile in the underworld
    The weaknesses are seen
    By peasants and presidents
    Who plan the counter-scheme
    Children in the schoolyard
    Finish choosing teams
    Divided by their dreams
    While a TV screams

    Throw your weapons down
    Throw your weapons down"

CONCERT REVIEW: Bob Dylan and Neil Young in Hyde Park – July 12, 2019 | No Depression

Setlists: Bob Dylan (left) and Neil Young @ Hyde Park - July 12, 2019

From LIVE REVIEW: Bob Dylan and Neil Young in Hyde Park – July 12, 2019 | No Depression by Doug Heselgrave:
I am sure that you have been in this situation before.

You have two friends and you love them both, but for almost completely different reasons. Taken individually, there’s no problem, but you worry about how it’d feel to see both of them at the same time in the same place together.

One of your friends is upbeat and soulful. He appeals to your sense of hope and optimism. You like it when you’re with him because you feel better when you see the world like he does. You understand and forgive that his vision is selective.

You love your other friend just as much, but he can be a bit of a downer at times and a lot of your other friends simply don’t understand him. The way he describes things, you’d swear the glass was always half empty. He’s probably not wrong, but you’re not always up to hearing what he’s got to say to you. When he’s on, he’s brilliant company and he always gives you a new way of looking at things.

Going to see Neil Young and Bob Dylan at Hyde Park in London last Friday was a lot like trying to find a place of equilibrium between those two friends. It was a sunny day and a sense of occasion could be felt in the air. Everyone was in a good mood. Friendly conversation and laughter could be heard everywhere. Most of the crowd appeared to be middle aged or older, and like me they had probably been listening to both artists for decades.

It goes without saying that both Neil Young and Bob Dylan are seasoned performers with huge back catalogs and impressive repertoires. Beyond that, one would be hard pressed to think of two iconic artists who had more distinct ways of interacting with their music and fans.

Neil Young performed first, supported by Promise of the Real, his most frequent touring band of the last few years. Much has been written about how the band, fronted by Lukas and Micah Nelson, Willie’s sons, has given Young a new focus and lease on life as a live performer. Clearly invigorated by his collaboration with the band, Young was in very fine form at Hyde Park. The deep intuition and reverence Promise of the Real communicates for Young’s music was evident in every song. Seasoned performers themselves, each member of the band displayed the chops and understanding to create the perfect musical context for songs from every phase of Young’s half-century career. The devotion the band members have for Young is palpable; their interchanges are intuitive, physical and kinetic, with Young acting as both mentor and bandleader.

Smiling all the way through, Young was clearly delighted by the aural landscapes Promise of the Real created for him to drop down into. Together, they created a sonic environment that preserved the original integrity of the songs, while at the same time imbuing them with a vitality and relevance that few veteran artists ever reach. Much of this had to do with the material Young and his band chose to perform. Many of the songs they played, such as “Winterlong,” “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere,” “Words (Between the Lines of Age),” “Walk On,” and “Alabama,” are songs that he has either never played before in concert or that have been absent from his set list for decades. When I asked Lukas Nelson about this a few years ago, he told me that the setlist often reflects his band’s favorite Neil Young songs, further demonstrating the give and take between the artist and his music protégés.

Taken as a whole, Neil Young and Promise of the Real’s performance at Hyde Park was the perfect example of how to play to a huge audience of people. Unlike his co-headliner, Bob Dylan, Young respects that people have expectations of him and he can be a crowd pleaser without ever diminishing his artistic integrity. Throughout the set, he effectively balanced his more sonically challenging material with acoustic classics like “Heart Of Gold,” “Old Man,” and “From Hank To Hendrix,” each of which was presented with reverence and care.

LIVESTREAM RE-BROADCAST: Neil Young + Promise of the Real Concert @ Nowlan Park, Kilkenny, Ireland

Per Neil Young Archives (NYA): Times-Contrarian, Neil Young + Promise of The Real live stream concert this past weekend in Kilkenny, Ireland will be re-broadcast "this week for 24 hours".

Neil Young | NYA Live Stream

From a comment on LIVESTREAM TODAY ON NYA: Neil Young + Promise of the Real - Nowlan Park, Kilkenny, Ireland - 14 July 2019 by Scotsman:
...The last time Neil did a live stream with POTR, I didn't comment: mainly because I thought it was total crap and switched off half way through.

Well, I'm singing a different tune tonight. I loved tonight's live stream from start to finish. That's the honest truth.

Unfortunately I missed attending Hyde Park this year for personal reasons. And when you are losing (or have just lost) someone close to you, someone special, every second suddenly seems more precious.

Of course, our loved ones stay with us in spirit. But that's not to deny or downplay the great sense of loss we all feel. Every breath feels ever more valuable. Every action is more alive, every feeling more intense. I know that. I'm feeling it too, among my own circle.

And that's what Neil is feeling on this tour, I guarantee you that. He's played his heart out. He really has. His band have performed impeccably. They've more assuredly committed to a different direction this tour: they've fundamentally shifted from "more is more" to "less is more". Quality over quantity. It's an approach they touched on in 2016, but have really gone to town with this time around. They've realised that their considerable strengths are actually subtlety, feeling and nuance. The result is a band and band leader who are all now pulling in the same direction.

I loved the camaraderie, the setlist, I adored Neil's ferocious guitar tone and the urgency of his playing. The beautiful big bloodbath climax to Cortez, the cutting guitars solos of Throw Your Hatred Down. The Nelson brothers were as close to perfect as I've heard them, sparse, soulful and powerful. Doing justice to the songs.

Most of these songs were purpose-built for Crazy Horse, of course. A very special band. I'd personally love Sampedro to come out of retirement for one more go around. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that happens. Band members come out of retirement with the same freqency as mafia Dons. And I hope Poncho reads this and considers it. But in the meantime, I'll just say these other guys are doing okay.

In short, I thought the show was bloody brilliant.

    Scotsman.
Thanks so much Scotsman. And again our sympathies that you were unable to make the concert but glad to hear you were able to enjoy the strea,

Likewise, the live stream went smoothly here at TW HQ on both PC and Android platforms.
