EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Neil Young Reveals Summer 2026 Tour Plans

Neil Young Announces AARP/Amtrak Summer Tour 2026

Editor's Note: Due to the heat and poor eyesight, our Intrepid Chicago Reporter (ICR) John Kwit misses the "No Trespassing" signs on his walk up in the unspoiled Colorado  hill country in an attempt to interview Neil Young (NY).  This is his 42nd  attempt to interview Neil in various locations since 1982.

Suddenly, he spots Neil by his barn.

This is John's story and an exclusive TW interview with  Neil Young. Enjoy.

Dateline: Somewhere on a Mountaintop in Colorado's Rockies Mountains

***

Intrepid Chicago Reporter (ICR): Hey, careful with that axe, Eugene! Yes, you by the barn!  Got any water? I know it’s only the end of March but it’s hotter than blazes up here. Must be global warming and I’m parched.

Neil Young (NY): My name’s not Eugene. Who are you and how’d you know I had an axe?

ICR: My name means nothing, but I know a Fender when I see one.

NY: You know I was gonna’ drag you by your britches and haul you feet-first back down the gravel road but I like your style. Sit down on that log.  I’ll go grab us both a cold water.

ICR: Much obliged.

NY: (returning with 2 cold waters) Now what brings you up here? I see you’re carrying a Steno notepad and a ballpoint pen.

ICR: (water slurping sound) Ahhhh.  I’m here to interview you, Mr. Young. Didn’t you get the letter I sent to Lookout Management?

NY: (wiping forearm of flannel shirt to mouth) I got nothing.

ICR: Well, then let me just get started. I don’t want to waste your valuable time.

NY: How’d you get directions to my place?

ICR: You gave them to me.

NY: I did?

ICR: Well, to be honest you gave them to everybody.  If you play side 1 of your latest album (Talkin’ to the Trees) backwards it gives clear, step-by-step instructions on how to get here.

NY: Well, I gotta’ talk to my manager about that.  Hey, what news outlet are you with?  One of the Big Guns: New York Times, Rolling Stone Magazine?

ICR: Ha. Please. I’m an elderly, independent journalist beholden to no-one seeking the truth and a scoop.

NY:  Well, I’ll be d*mned. You look familiar. We crossed paths before?

ICR: Crossed paths?  I got 44 solid years of following your career, buying your albums, seeing your shows from the rail to the back-rafters, reading every news article and book I could find related to you and your multiple band family trees.  Then I started interviewing band members and writing.  We’ve had many words together over the years, shook hands, had some belly laughs. But I gotta’ tell you, my adventures are enough to get a fella’ divorced.  For some reason, my wife kept me and she never forgot that autograph you signed for her in 2000 as she sat cross-legged on the ground with photo in-hand outside the revolving door of the Indianapolis shopping mall where you exited before playing a gig on the CSNY2K Tour.   Remember that?

NY: Yes, I do, and she was very polite as I recall. Petite too.

ICR: Shoot, yep, that’s her.  I’m sorry, let me re-focus on today’s interview.

NY: I’m a little picky on the topics I care to discuss.  I’m still a little gun-shy after that Shakey Biography.  Sometimes interview questions get too personal. What’s on your mind?

ICR: Well, before I start the interview questions, I have an idea for you.  I’m thinking of you and your family’s financial security.  What I’m proposing is a massive, super-deluxe, limited-edition HEART OF GOLD Box Set featuring every known official studio recording, outtake and live performance of that one song.  I’m guessing there’s at least 400 live versions out there alone.  So, if each vinyl record could hold 44 minutes of music, at 4 minutes per song (that’s including the pre and post-audience banter or guitar tuning musings) I figure you’d need a 40 record box set. And it needs to come out on vinyl with the best analog sources and then you can have the last side be blank and feature a laser etching of something you hand-drew.  And the kicker…the subtitle of the Box Set is: It’s All The Same Song.  What do you think?

NY:  It’s all the same song?

ICR:  Yeah, that’s one of your most famous sayings, isn’t it?  I borrowed it from you.

NY: (shaking his head) It’s all the same song?  I’m starting to rethink my idea of grabbing you by your britches and hauling you feet-first back down the gravel road…but only because of that remark about the laser etching.  I’ve caught a lot of flack about those blank-side etchings on previous releases and I’ve learned my lesson. The limited-edition 40 vinyl record HEART OF GOLD Box Set is a fine idea. You know, I beat the bootleggers by releasing my treasure trove of live and unreleased material via the Archives.  And now, with this “It’s All the Same Song” idea, the sky’s the limit!  I mean, if there’s a 40 Record Box set for Heart of Gold, who’s to say I couldn’t put out a 22 Record ONLY LOVE CAN BREAK YOUR HEART Box set or a 12 Record LIKE A HURRICANE Box Set.  Shoot, I’ve got some kick *ss 23 minute versions of that ditty in the vaults from 1977 that nobody’s heard that’ll make your ears ring for weeks.  Frankly, I don’t know why my people or I didn’t think of this “It’s All The Same Song” Box Set concept first.  You want to work on my Archives Team?

ICR: Much obliged, but I’ll have to pass. I’m already working two jobs to make ends meet and I’m trying to finish up a stellar career in Federal Service on a high note.

NY: Well, the door is always open.  You mentioned you were looking for a scoop. Since you were so kind to share the “It’s All the Same Song” idea with me, I got a doozy of a scoop for you.  You know a lot folks across the pond are disappointed that I cancelled a European Tour in 2026.  I have a tendency to change my mind, have you noticed that?

ICR: Well, now that you…

NY: I was gonna save this secret 2026 Tour announcement for one of those huge mega-media websites, with the sponsorship of a prominent organization where I could get the most exposure…

ICR: You mean like Classmates.com sponsored by…

NY: No, even bigger than that.

ICR: I can’t fathom it.  Spill the beans, man.

NY: OK, here goes. So, some people have been encouraging me to do one of those Cruise Ship Music Tours.  But who wants to be stuck on a boat with the Oak Ridge Boys, you know what I mean?  Plus, if I’m not feeling the vibe on night 5 out in middle of the Atlantic how am I going to bail?  Jump into a lifeboat with a trolling motor and hope for the best?

ICR: Eat a peach, indeed!  I hear ya.

Amtrak Train

NY: So I saw this ad in the latest AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons)  magazine offering a 10% discount on Amtrak travel for seniors and this whole vision just crystalized before my very eyes.  A train tour, through-out the United States, stopping at all the former great little small town depots where my fans can see me and the Chrome Hearts plug in, outdoors, in the sunshine with nary a care in the world.

Francesville Train Depot

And even if the depot is no longer there, there’s gotta be a electrical outlet somewhere where we can plug in, either at the local garage, five and dime, or town-square gazebo.  You ever been to Hamlet, North Carolina; Pretty Prairie, Kansas; Antioch, Illinois?

Hamlet, Pretty Prairie and Antioch Train Depots

ICR: I’ve been everywhere, man, I’ve been everywhere.  Have you thought about the logistics, like food for the crowds? (tapping pen on Steno pad)

NY: Everything will be organic and if needed, it’ll be trucked in by electric vehicles.  And the prices will be competitive, not like what you see at these indoor arenas charging $5 for a hot dog.  Ain’t that a crime?

ICR: Well the prices at the Neil Young Village on your last tour were…

NY: Can I interrupt? The one exception will be Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. I gotta’ have those.  My roadies got mad at me on the last tour, I think it was near Milwaukee, because I was scarfing a bag after our final number while the crowd was going wild and then I grabbed Hank William’s old guitar for the encore and I forgot to wipe my hands clean.  My guitar tech and roadies had a devil of a time getting that red powdery stuff off, you know what I mean?

ICR: (tapping pen on Steno notepad)  It’s all a bit much for me to take in. What I really want to know is…

NY: Can I interrupt, again?  I want this tour to really show my love for the fans, that’s why I’ll be encouraging fans to book a roomette on Amtrak so you can share the ride with me. All I ask is for everyone to be considerate of their hot water usage so we can all take a decent shower. We can hang out late at night after the gigs, play cards or board games while looking out the observation car windows.  I’ll have my guitar and I encourage others to bring theirs too.  And I’d really like somebody to bring an armonica.  You know, that glass instrument ol’ Ben Franklin designed.

ICR: I know a fella’ who…

NY: Oh, and let’s talk autographs. I’m known as an extremely private guy and I’ve been pretty stingy with autographs for the last decade or so, but folks, listen, just bring me your items: Posters, photos, instruments, tour programs, my books, your forearm. You bring it and I’ll gladly sign it.

ICR: You mean you’ll sign those 2 items I’ve been lugging around for the last ten years?

NY: Of course. Do you have them on you now?

ICR: No. (tapping pen on Steno notepad)

NY: Well that’s a d*mn shame.  Wait a minute.  That tapping noise you keep making has a very distinctive sound.  I need to capture it.  Kind of cross between Jim Keltner, Johny Barbata and Chad Cromwell, you know, a few great fella’s who’ve kept the beat for me on and off over the years.  You got a few minutes you can spare with me?

ICR: Sure.

NY: (yelling to the nearby cabin) Honey, bring the camcorder!  I want to record a song.  (Rushes out into the barn and returns with a trusty acoustic guitar).  I want to record another version of Heart of Gold right now, with you on the Steno notepad.  Are you in the musician’s union?

ICR: No, but I’m in two other unions.  Just list me as uncredited.

NY: Great.  Give me a minute to think of the tuning.  It might be in G.

(And that’s how the Steno notepad version got on the 40 record Heart of Gold Box Set)

The End

John Kwit

Micah Nelson on How He Got Neil Young Back on the Road | Rolling Stone

Micah Nelson Awaits:
DangerBird Descends for "The Hurricane"
August 10th - Richmond, VA
 (Click photo to enlarge)

"Neil’s in the zone, he’s riding the wave and he wants to keep riding it. So yeah, look out for us."  ~~ Micah Nelson

RS: The Chrome Hearts formed just a few months later. What was the spark that led to that?

Micah:  I knew how bummed out Neil was. He wasn’t feeling like making music. He was really sick. He was trying to get over that, and just get his energy back. And then he was really bummed out about what happened, and how it all went down. And that just kind of drained him a lot, and doused this flame.

I was like, “Is Neil fading away? This is unacceptable.” So I’d call him a lot and check in on him and remind him how he’s not old. I was like, “Do whatever you got to do, man. Take your time. I get it. Recharge. The tank has got to fill back up, and that can take time, but whenever you want to do the thing again, just call me up and I’m ready to go.”

I kept that idea going and reminding him that he didn’t play for four years, and he felt the rust. And then it took a few years once he started again to really, really get back in the groove.

He started with the solo [Coastal] tour, which was great. I think coming out from that hiatus and doing the Crazy Horse tour, we might not have lasted as long as we did even this time. He had to rebuild his energy.

I said to him, “Cory [McCormick] and Anthony [LoGerfo] from the Real, they’re down. I’ve talked to them.” And my brother [Lukas] … when that band went on their hiatus, he had written a letter to Neil just saying, “Hey, just because I’m not playing with these guys anymore, don’t feel weird about taking them out. They’re down to play with you, and they’re ready to go. So whenever you want to do it, don’t even hesitate.”
...

RS: The Chrome Hearts tour got off to a really strong start in Europe. Fans were buzzing from the first show in Switzerland.

Micah: Yeah, the audiences really brought a lot of positive supportive energy, and it kind of took us by surprise. We were really energized by the people, and that helped. The Europe tour was challenging in a lot of ways, travel wise and routing and buses breaking down. But the shows were super energizing and the audiences … just cheering at places you’re not even expecting them to. Those kind of things, they really light the way.

RS: The set list was full of surprises. I never thought I’d hear “Be the Rain” or “Sun Green Again,” let alone “Looking Forward” and “Name of Love” from the CSNY reunion albums.
Micah: That’s the other cool thing about the Chrome Hearts that I think keeps Neil energized. He knows he can do anything. Whatever era of Neil or whatever deep cuts, we can learn stuff pretty quick and deliver something. And especially because we have Spooner, it’s like we can do the Harvest Moon stuff in a way that really feels like the albums, and we can go delicate and we can get loud and ragged and do everything in between.
...

RS: A lot of fans followed the tour around. Did you see the same faces on the rail most every night?

Micah: Oh yeah. You start to recognize all the Rusties that are at every show. Some of them were in their twenties. It wasn’t just a bunch of old dudes in flannel shirts. We love those guys, of course, they’re fantastic. But especially in Europe, you had such a mix of different types of people, different age groups, and they’d be at every show.

...

RS: Do you think Neil will play in the States again next year? Overseas?

Micah: It’s really hard to say. We’ve talked about Japan. We’ve talked about we could do Europe again, and do places that we didn’t even hit last time, all new places. Same with the States. We’ve talked about a Gulf of Mexico tour. That would be fun. We didn’t really hit that region last time. There’s a lot of fans down there.

RS: Do you think Crazy Horse is ever going to play again or is Ralph just not up for it?

Micah: It’s hard to say. I didn’t realize how unhealthy he was when we were on tour. I know that drums are probably the least forgiving instrument when you’re getting older to keep up a certain level of power behind your playing. So I don’t know how much of it was that, and how much of it was just the fact that he was not well. But he’s a tough dude. I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back and was healthy and feeling like he could do it again. I can’t really say for sure. It’s really up to those guys and up to Neil.

RS: I really hope another Chrome Hearts tour happens next year. This one was really special.

Micah: My feeling is, barring disaster … Neil’s in the zone, he’s riding the wave and he wants to keep riding it. So yeah, look out for us.

The Making of ‘Heart of Gold Volume 1’ – A Neil Young Tribute Album Supporting The Bridge School

‘Heart of Gold Volume 1
A Neil Young Tribute Album Supporting The Bridge School

‘Heart Of Gold Volume 1’, a compilation of Neil Young covers performed by artists including Fiona Apple, Brandi Carlile, The Doobie Brothers, Eddie Vedder, Mumford & Sons, and more, will raise funds for The Bridge School .  The Bridge School helps children with severe speech and physical impairments through assistive technology.

Cinema Music Group (CMG) a Los Angeles-based production house founded by longtime friends and collaborators Dave Resnik and Niko Bolas, produced the benefit album. Each artist on the album personally chose the song they covered, and nearly every track was recorded in just one or two takes, giving the record an intimate, live feel. The tribute benefit album has already raised $100,000 for The Bridge School, with Volume 1 out now, and Volumes 2 and 3 on the way.

From HARLTON EMPIRE:

Kat Harlton: How did the idea for ‘Heart of Gold Volume 1’ come about, and what inspired you to make it a benefit project for The Bridge School?

CMG: We were recording an album with Chris Pierce in 2022. He’s such an incredible songwriter. We knew we wanted to record more with him and we started looking at cover ideas. Niko’s worked with Neil for a long time and their friendship goes back 30+ years! So, we ended up speaking with Neil and got his blessing to record a few covers but the idea only ended up growing from there and after a few more conversations we booked a studio session in 2023 and invited Chris Pierce, Sharon Van Etten and Draco Rosa along. We reached out to Brandi Carlile too and she said yes but her schedule was really busy. We tracked 3 songs in one day! The session was great success and we just kept going. Brandi recorded “Philadelphia” about 15 months later! The Bridge School is such a huge part of Neil’s legacy. The old benefit concerts were so memorable, it was such an exciting thing to be part of. It only felt natural for us to turn the Heart Of Gold project into a benefit record to benefit The Bridge School.

Kat: Neil Young is such a revered and complex artist—what was it like securing his blessing for this project, and how did that influence how you approached the covers?

CMG: It meant everything, we definitely couldn’t have done it without him. His songwriting is so good, His songs are some of the best ever written. We wanted to approach recording the record with as much care and respect for the original songs as possible and we believed the best way to do that was by letting the artists pick the songs they wanted to cover. By doing that it meant that they were able to pick and play the songs that they really connected with. We wanted to make a heartfelt record and this approach made it easier to record and capture all the emotive performances.

Kat: With artists like Fiona Apple, Brandi Carlile, Eddie Vedder, and The Doobie Brothers involved, how did you go about curating such a diverse and legendary lineup?

CMG: Similar to how the concerts were put together… The concerts had this family feel to them where everyone knew everyone. We wanted to keep that family feel so we reached out to people who we knew. Sometimes we were able to reach out directly to the artist and sometimes we reached out to the producer, or a manager or even the guitar tech! The whole project happened via word or mouth. We ran with the whole six degrees of separation… “who do we know who knows ___?”. We were really surprised by how many people wanted to be involved. It was amazing to have so many artists wanting to use their talents and music to do something good.

Kat: You chose to record most songs live in just one or two takes—why was it important to you to keep the process raw and immediate, and how did that affect the final sound?

CMG: We used Neil’s “1 take” approach to tracking. It’s really difficult to capture the emotion in a session if it’s all been recorded in parts and sections. It’s best to do full takes, that’s when the magic happens! You feel the energy between the musicians. The drummer is playing with the bassist and they’re feeding off of that… the guitar digs in a little harder and the vocalist is feeling it too because they’re all in the same room together! You can’t get that with a computer. It’s not squeaky clean but the magic is found in all those subtle mistakes and nuances. If you listen to any of Neil’s records you can hear him use that process too. It has such a vibe to it. It feels much more intimate.

Excitement continues to build in anticipation of the long awaited postponed   “Love Earth Tour”: Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse concerts. (Tour Dates  - UPDATED)

"Informed speculation" aside, here are some details straight from the Horse's mouth -- so to speak.

 "BROKEN CIRCLE"

From Letters to the Editor | Neil Young  Archives, Neil writes to maybe expect a setlist of "Ragged Glory" because "they like playing whole albums now after EKTIN @ Roxy". (thanks Mike "RoadDawg"!)

In another batch of letters on Letters to the Editor | Neil Young  Archives, Neil writes that drummer Ralph Molina wants to play "Words".  Also, confirmation of no Nils Lofgren on this tour (because of conflicting Bruce Springsteen tour) with Micah Nelson as "Poncho".

1998 INTERVIEW: Jim Jarmusch on Film "Year Of The Horse" w/ Neil Young and Crazy Horse

jim jarmusch
 Jim Jarmusch and Neil Young

Director Jim Jarmusch’s intimate documentary about Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Year Of The Horse spanned the band’s 28-year history, incorporating footage from tours in 1976, '86 and their most recent '96 jaunt around America and Europe.

"A Tale of 4 Guys Who Like To Rock"
"Year Of The Horse" by Jim Jarmusch

The Akron, Ohio-born Jarmusch, one of the pioneers of the American independent film boom, is best known for his idiosyncratic movies Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law and Mystery Train. Music is a big element in all his films, and Jarmusch has cast rock music personalities in his movies like Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Tom Waits.

The director's relationship with Young began when the rocker did the score for his last film, Dead Man, while Neil's own label, Vapor, released the soundtrack album. Jarmusch also directed the video for the song “Big Time” from the Neil Young and Crazy Horse record “Broken Arrow.”

Year Of The Horse is about the band, Neil Young and Crazy Horse--which includes longtime cohorts drummer/vocalist Ralph Molina, bassist/vocalist Billy Talbot and guitarist/vocalist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro.

Former Neil Young and Crazy Horse producer/arranger Jack Nitzsche is represented in some still photos in the collection as well as a Crazy Horse founding member, Danny Whitten.

The live performances, along with the interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, were filmed in Europe and the US during the '96 tour, with some archival stuff from both the ’76 and ’86 treks. Most of the performances were photographed in 16mm, but a large percentage was captured on Super-8 film by L.A. Johnson and Jarmusch.

But mostly we used Super-8 because we love the way it looks—the raw beauty of the material somehow corresponds to the particular quality of the Horse’s music.”

In 1998 Harvey Kubernik interviewed director Jim Jarmusch in Los Angeles. Portions were later published in Kubernik's 2006 book Hollywood Shack Job: Rock Music in Film and on Your Screen

Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Q: How did your relationship with Neil Young formally begin?

Jim Jarmusch: Neil and the band liked the results of the video I did for the song, “Big Time,” which was shot entirely on Super-8 film in and around Half Moon Bay, California. Neil particularly liked the rough look of the Super-8. He called me up a little while later and said, “Listen, we should do a longer film that looks and feels like the ‘Big Time’ video!” Neil liked the way we were such a small, portable little crew.

Q: What are you most proud or happy with after viewing and living with this movie?

A: I love the contradiction of Super-8 film on a big screen with music that is recorded on 40-track digital Dolby... the combination of high- tech sound with a real low-tech image. And somehow that contradiction is very appropriate to this band, because they have this huge transcendent sound that comes out of old amps and a very raw kind of playing approach to the music. And somehow that raw beauty and bigness and smallness together... I don’t know how to explain it, but I think we captured that contradiction on film.

Year Of The Horse makes it clear that the band's music comes from the whole band. Neil Young is certainly their navigator, leading them into the soaring territory of their songs, but Ralph, Poncho and Billy are anything but sidemen. Together they create a singular sound that--in the same way John Coltrane kept jazz alive and evolving with his group’s ‘sheets of sounds’--keeps rock & roll alive through its emotional connection to the musicians who are playing it. I wanted to shoot Super-8 and then we covered the concerts that we shot in the house with 16mm.

Ralph Molina Discussing Danny Whitten

Q: One of your film’s strong points is the fusion of archival 1976 and 1986 materials shot in 16mm and the utilization of photos blended with the 1996 tours you and the crew captured.

A: Neil had 16mm film material from 1976, and the ’86 footage was “stolen” from Bernard Shakey’s film, done by Neil himself, “Muddy Track.” The 1986 was high-8 video that Neil, and I guess (arranger/ producer) David Briggs shot.

We went that way partly because the small cameras allowed us to easily shoot by ourselves, without a crew.

But mostly we used Super-8 because we love the way it looks—the raw beauty of the material somehow corresponds to the particular quality of the Horse’s music.”

Q: What did you notice about the '76 and '86 footage? I would imagine even then the camera was mostly on Neil.

A: I tried to keep the crews that shot our 16mm from doing that. Neil is the lead singer, the lead guitar player and the songwriter, the front man of the group.

Crazy Horse tend to be overshadowed by, not by his own design but that’s just the way it is. And one aspect of Year Of The Horse was to make those guys known as people a little bit, so we understand them as a band, and not just as Neil Young’s backup, side musicians.

I began to realize they were a four-piece band when I started shooting “Big Time.” I’ve always been a big fan of Neil, particularly with Crazy Horse on album like Tonight’s The Night or On The Beach. I like the more dark, rock ‘n’ roll side of Neil. I think he’s a great songwriter but Harvest Moon isn’t Ragged Glory for me, ya know.

I’m a rock ‘n’ roller, so I never liked Crosby, Stills and Nash, for example. It’s too sweet and light, and doesn’t speak to me. I don’t respond to that stuff. So, I was always a fan of the Horse. And I started realizing that sound comes from these guys and if you were to replace any of the them you wouldn’t have that sound anymore.

Q: Were Neil Young and Crazy Horse members cooperative interview subjects?

A: We were treated as part of their gang! We were in the same hotels and given the room list. We were able to hang out with them anytime we wanted—with or without a camera. We were very polite— we didn’t barge in. They were really gracious. At one show in England, there were 60,000 people there. Neil’s guys allowed myself and L.A. Johnson on stage and let us film with total access. We’re not supposed to get in Neil’s eyeline, because he gives 110% when he’s on stage. He’s there to make music, not to make a movie. You get a slightly different show when they play in small clubs, which they love to do before they go out on tour. Those shows are amazing.

Q: Were you always a Neil Young fan?

A: I’ve been a big fan since I was a kid. I first heard the song “Broken Arrow” by Buffalo Springfield, which was very visual and dreamlike to me. I didn’t know what the lyrics meant, so I invented my own scenario. After that, the next big thing that went right into me was the first Crazy Horse record, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. So, I’ve been a big fan all along, but had never seen Neil live until the late ’80s. The good stuff always held up. That’s why we listen to Bach.

I was listening constantly to Neil and Crazy Horse while I was writing the script for Dead Man, then again during the shooting, which involved a great deal of travel. Crazy Horse even performed in Sedona, Arizona during the shooting period, and a large number of our crew attended the show.

I wrote Dead Man in a little house in the Catskills with Neil’s music playing on a boombox.

Q: What did you learn about Crazy Horse's music, and Neil Young as a writer/guitarist?

A: He’s a real poet, but not in an extravagant way. I mean, he uses very common language, but it becomes poetic in the economy. Things are not over-explained. And what really kind of blew my mind was, after I hung out with Neil at his ranch, I realized certain lyrics that were very abstract to me I then saw, or had some insight into what, literally, they were all about.

Q: Tell me about the pre-production process.

A: Filming is like going out and collecting material. It’s like taking some guys and going out to a rock quarry and you bring back a big chunk of marble. And then you look at it. Say you wanted to have a sculpture of a horse and you bring back the model which you think is the right size and shape, but then while you’re looking at it, it tells you it should be a deer. Or a cow. You have to let the material tell you what it wants to be. That’s the way I like to work. There’s certainly the “Hitchcock School,” where you storyboard everything. Hitchcock said himself that filming was incredibly boring because it was just trying to translate this stuff on paper onto the screen. But I like to be open to the things you can’t control. I like to be open and bring something else ’cause... Neil is a master of this. Often the best things you do are by accident or by mistake or by things you didn’t plan properly. Things out of your control.

Q: Were you impressed by the availability of film and video from earlier tours that you were allowed to utilize in Year Of The Horse?

A: Well, it kind of threw me for a loop when I realized all that 1976 footage is a feature-length film. I keep tellin’ Neil, “Man, you gotta make that into a feature length film. Then you’ll have ‘Muddy Track’ from ’86, ‘Year Of The Horse’ from ’96 and this other film from ’76.”

Q: What did you observe about the growth of Crazy Horse and their relationship with Neil over the years?

A: They’ve become more pure and more loose at the same time. They are more open to letting something take them away into the sky without knowing the destination necessarily. I think they’re more courageous in that way. And yet their music is wilder. It’s less refined, less careful. Like, there’s Neil playing that solo from ’76 in “Like A Hurricane” that is a breathtakingly beautiful guitar solo, but it’s very clean in a way. It’s a different kind of purity. But then you cut to how far he’s gone to like this real wild way-out-there stuff. He’s not afraid to go into dark terrain and bring all that experience with him. They are warriors and they’ve been in more battles and are more violent than ever. But they are also stronger. I agree with Neil’s dad in the film when he says: “Their music just seems to get better and better.”

(Writer, Neil's Dad)

Q: It was also interesting to learn about the other members of Crazy Horse. The candid interview segments really educated a lot of people to a band that has played together for decades.

A: They are not used to it. It’s like people have always gone by them to get to Neil. And on one level they probably like that because they are not thrown into the melee all the time. On another level, they deserve, and know they deserve, respect for their contributions to this “world’s greatest garage band,” or whatever you want to call them.

Q: It’s not often we get to see and hear musicians run down their individual histories around the age of 50 as they are sort of being introduced to an audience for the first time.

A: They’ve seen it all. These guys have had people die around them. Tragic things. They’ve lived through really wild drug experiences and they all survived. Not all of them, but these four.

It’s like, when I worked on Dead Man, I spent a lot of time with native people in the States and Canada. One old guy was saying, “In our culture, to be old is like getting to go to the top of the mountain and looking out.” That’s a value all the young people respect... a guy who has been able to look out up there. Because in native culture, it’s very cool to be old, you know. Their view is from a higher place. That’s very valuable to those of us who are catching up to that, who are just starting out our climb up the mountain.”

Neil Young's Original Harvest Album Cover Photo? + TW Shoutout

Neil Young's Original Harvest Photo?

Last year, we featured a few interviews by musician Otis Gibbs -- “The best unknown songwriter in music today” -- who also happens to be a big Neil Young fan amongst other notorieties. (Thanks Jim!)

In his latest video podcast, Otis Gibbs tells the story of the great photographer, Henry Diltz, who claims Neil Young's Harvest album was meant to have a different cover. Interesting speculation here on what might have been.

Here is an image that the above interview references by photographer Henry Diltz from "The Barn" and the Harvest album sessions (see "Old man look at my life..." - Photos of Neil Young and His Inspiration by Henry Diltz )

The Unused Harvest Album Cover Photo???

If a photo was used instead on the Harvest album cover, the whole "loner hippie cowboy" image of Neil Young would have certainly had a different impact. Certainly, Neil on a haybale was not the image that the record label wanted to establish.

Lastly, check out comments around ~3:00 about our website Thrasher's Wheat as a "Neil Young rabbit hole."  Thanks for props Otis!

Also, check out an interview with Kenny Vaughan on why Neil Young is intentionally out of tune.
