NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES TIMELINE CONCERT OF THE MOMENT: w/ Crazy Horse at Bonnaroo Festival, TN - June 15, 2003

A new Timeline Concert of the Moment is now streaming on Neil Young Archives.  (Thanks the Road Dawg!)

The latest Timeline Concert is Neil Young and Crazy Horse at Bonnaroo Festival, TN on June 15, 2003.

Bonnaroo Journal from Knoxville News: "Neil Young and Crazy Horse hit the stage at 9:42 p.m. and opened with a 18 minute version of "Love to Burn." Crazy Horse - guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, drummer Ralph Molina and Bassist Billy Talbot created a beautiful explosion of sound."

The New York Times said:

"Despite the revolving jam sessions, this was a crowd with a long attention span, and the festival's best stretches were when bands just held their own for long chunks of time. Neil Young, on Friday, performed with his three-decade-old band, Crazy Horse, under a custardy full moon. For three hours he played expanded versions, some of them 29 minutes long, of his best songs"Love to Burn," "Cortez the Killer," "Cinnamon Girl" and others. He was the only soloist, breaking to solo at length several times per song. Playing in his ragged, stuttering phrases, he made strings of notes crumble into noise, then recohere toward graceful endings. (The festival's excellent concert sound made his guitar tone feel a mile thick.) It was extraordinary, the ideal of a gnarled yet sophisticated technique."

Comment of the Moment: "Second Song" Album by Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts

"Second Song" Album
by Neil Young & Chrome Hearts

Reaction to Neil Young's initial releases of  2 songs from the upcoming album "Second Song" with The Chrome Hearts has been nearly universally praised by fans and the music press thus far.

"Second Song" Video
Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts

Here is a Comment of the Moment on the upcoming album "Second Song" by Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts by Abner:
I have a few thoughts going back to the first time I heard the song.

Nostalgia is maybe not quite right as it constantly intersects with the present. The song places the nostalgic in a deeply problematic relationship to the present, although this is not always literal.

If it was just harkening back to the sunny mornings and saving dimes the song is very different and probably not worth all that much. But beyond this problematic relationship to the present is that the present is placing everything in jeopardy.

There is the immediate fact, within the lyrics, that what we need and want will no longer even be possible. This reality then strips us of our dignity as we are the ones who have destroyed the possibility of a future for both ourselves and everything else.

To me, the center of the song are the lyrics: "but we won't remember them, cause we're the ones who didn't care." If one is really paying attention these lines hit like brass knuckles while there is painful irony with the beauty of the song. The same spirit could provide a bonfire for an electric nightmare of another song.

Second Song is beyond a warning, it is a collision with our reckless actions.
Thanks for the comment Abner. Intrigued by your take on Second Song as "beyond a warning". The tone here on "Second Song" is a bit more subtle than we've heard from Neil in recent years where he's been  borderline sledgehammer (see  "Talkin' To The Trees" album and "Big Change", for example.)

NEW SONG VIDEO: Neil Young's "Casting Me Away From You"

"Casting Me Away From You"
by Neil Young & Chrome Hearts
via Neil Young Archives.

The 2nd song -- "Casting Me Away From You" -- from the upcoming release by Neil Young & Chrome Hearts "Second Song" album is now posted on  Neil Young Archives.

The song "Casting Me Away From You"  was written over 60 years ago when Neil was in Winnipeg,

Similar to the 1st  song released -- "Second Song"  -- from the upcoming release by Neil Young & Chrome Hearts "Second Song"  album, the video is from Broken Arrow ranch.  The footage was shot in the back of a jeep by David Meyers, who filmed "Journey Through the Past" around 1972.

The video features Neil with his dog Timer, driving a Jeep on newly paved ranch roads, while Carrie Snodgress rides along side on horseback.

Comment of the Moment: "Second Song" by Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts

"Second Song" Video
Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts

Reaction to Neil Young's release of a video for "Second Song," from his upcoming album with The Chrome Hearts has been nearly universally praised by fans and the music press thus far.

For so many, the nostalgia of the Broken Arrow Ranch in Northern California is viscerally breathtaking. The video shot by Rick Rosas (AKA Rick "The Bass Player") on a drive into the ranch is simultaneously uplifting yet heartbreaking.

With that background, Neil's understated song melody, instrumentation and lyrics combine to bring some to smile, some to cry and everyone to wonder ... thrashers included.

Which brings us to a very special Comment of the Moment by Dan Swan.

As you may recall, Dan has been on a sabbatical -- so to speak  -- from Thrasher's Wheat for awhile.  Often a thoughtful commenter, his words here have been missed.  His return -- for us -- is like the swallows of Capistrano.

Here is the TW Comment of the Moment on VIDEO: "Second Song" | Neil Young Archives by Dan:
I have been away for a really long time here. The reasons are multilayered and difficult to summarize here. But I couldn’t possibly not post about this new song from Neil.

My first reaction was an unmistakable feeling of comfort and reassurance. I fell under the spell of a road trip out to Neil’s ranch. Now; I don’t typically like music videos, but I make an exception in this case, because it truly serves the song. But as usual with Neil, the lyrics are really the focus here.

Neil has always had this tendency to write lyrics that feel more like a stream of consciousness, rather than a specific thing. In this case it plays to the strength of the musical tone of this song.

What it created here for me was a sense of nostalgia and purpose. Combining both without contradicting either one. Yet at the end of the song there’s a message that may seem contradictory. I’m not sure how else to explain it really. It may well be the point of the song to be unresolved in the end. Or perhaps just an open question left for each person to ponder.

All I know for sure is this Second Song affected me in a most profound way. I was drawn into that world, and it touched my spirit in an unexpected way. I felt his presence within the song. It wasn’t just him singing it, he was literally inside of it. And I was privileged enough to be invited in on his journey.

I was transported out of my current situation and spent just over eleven minutes somewhere I wish I could take up permanent residence. A place where perfect is a myth, and possibilities are infinite.

The word masterpiece has become a cliche. But if such a thing is still possible….this would be it.

Peace to All 🙏
Hey Dan, great to hear from you.

Especially for this new song from Neil.  You're right, the video of the drive into Broken Arrow ranch so captures the essence. The vibe. The whole feel of ranch world.

Rick Rosas film comes from the past.

Into the present.

Taking us to future.
Alchemy baby.

Welcome back Dan.

The title track of Neil Young's upcoming album with The Chrome Hearts, "Second Song," now has an official music video release.

The video is shot by Rick Rosas (AKA Rick "The Bass Player") on a drive into the Broken Arrow Ranch in Northern California.  It's unclear when the film was was shot, but the best estimate is sometime around 1990 when Rick was driving into record at the ranch studio.

"Second Song" album will be released on September 18, 2026.

Neil Young Patron ZOOM Call Update: Archives Volume 4 Release + More

Neil Young on Patron ZOOM - July 8, 2026
image via Rusted Moon

Here is an update from Neil Young's Patron call earlier today. Many thanks to everyone for reports via TW comments.

by Robert Broadfoot

Asked about a release of the LWW remix currently rolled out on NYA the man himself during a video call for patrons declined any intention to go beyond the NYA and release a tangible version.

Questions by the patrons included "Canary", "Homefires", "Electric Judy", also recordings of the 1993 European Tour with Booker T. & the MGs were mentioned. Neil Young described how he ended up with songs on his new album that originated in the 60's.

There were a lot of prominent grains, rusties and zumans online who are more apt to summarize what had been said than me, so who's gonna stand up?
Developing ... check back.

UPDATE: See excellent summary in comments below by Greying Rider.

Comment of the Moment: "Corduroy Plants": Concert Film of Neil Young's 2025 Tour w/ the Chrome Hearts

"Be The Rain"
Neil Young  & The Chrome Hearts

Last week, Neil Young posted a new concert film of the 2025 LOVE EARTH Tour w/ the Chrome Hearts titled "Corduroy Plants".

Our Comment of the Moment on the post "Corduroy Plants": Concert Film of Neil Young's 2025 Tour w/ the Chrome Hearts by Knowledge Nomad:
Just finished watching Cordoroy Plants.

First, I love the title and the fact that Neil is willing to poke fun at himself. That self-effacing characteristic is very endearing and very much lacking among most "famous" people.

Enjoyed the film overall. The reediness of his voice is something that does make me cringe at times, but the musicianship is fantastic.

I think Daryl's artistic hand in splicing in footage during Be the Rain, Vampire Blues, Like a Hurricane and Cortez is quite well done. She's showing us things many would rather look away from -- the environmental consequences of our economic system, the cruelty and barbarism of past and contemporary regimes both in the US and other countries, the corruption and plunder by the oligarchic class, and the linkages between all of them. It's a heady stew.

This production owes as much to her as Neil.
Thanks for the comment Knowledge Nomad. You're right about how Neil's video/films have been taken to another level over the recent years due to his creative collaborations with his wife Daryl.
In particular, we find that the camera work by Adam "CK" Vollick to be stupendous, especially on the 14 minute "Cortez the Killer." In addition, note the additional lyrics variation on the famous lost verse.

"Corduroy Plants*"

Other noteworthy items include:
  • 13:30 Name of Love (from CSNY's American Dream) newly arranged
  • 28:30 New verse in Long Walk Home (from Life, 1987) "From Canada to old Ukraine"
  • 31:40 New: Silver Eagle
(Thanks Harrison!)

"Corduroy Plants": Concert Film of Neil Young's 2025 Tour w/ the Chrome Hearts

"Corduroy Plants*"

"Corduroy Plants*," a concert film of Neil Young's 2025 Tour w/ the Chrome Hearts has been posted to Neil Young Archives. (*Not a typo.  On opening track "Daddy Went Walking", Neil mis-sings "Corduroy Plants" instead of "Corduroy Pants".)

The film -- directed by Daryl Hannah -- contains eleven of the album  "As Time Explodes" thirteen tracks and is approximately 68 minutes.

"Corduroy Plants"

 (Click photo to enlarge)

A highlight of the film is a 14 minute "Cortez the Killer," recorded in Norway with footage of various current and historical events.

Per Rolling Stone by Andy Greene:
"If most artists of Young’s stature had created a concert film and released it for free to the fans, there would have been some sort of promotional campaign along with social media posts. But Young stopped using most social media platforms due to their connections to the Trump administration, rarely grants interviews, and didn’t even send out a press release.

It was left for fans to discover for themselves on the Neil Young Archives."
And discover we did.

Neil Young Archives Volume 4 is "almost completed": What Will It Contain?

Earlier this week, the good folks over at Neil Young Archives made note on the front page of Times-Contrarian of the 30th anniversary of Thrasher's Wheat.

And if that wasn't enough, over on Rusted Moon, TW news made the  Quote of the week: Update on NYA Vol. 4. (Thanks Ralf!)

In 2024, Neil Young announced that he has "begun assembly" of NYA Volume #4 by The Volume Dealers. Per announcement, "Original performances" will be the basis for cut selection. The Bluenotes "10 Men Working" will be an unheard original song on V#4.  Volume #4 will be the "second last" of the series. Back in 2022, Neil had talked of Volume #4 as being the final volume.

Earlier this year, we posted on the question of what will Neil Young Archives Vol. 4 contain with an article from Neil Young Unreleased - NYU by Robert Broadfoot.

Neil Young Announces New Album: 'Second Song'

RECORDING and LISTENING
Times Contrarian | Neil Young Archives
(Click photo to enlarge)

Neil Young has announced another new studio album titled 'Second Song' and recorded with the Chrome Hearts.

On Times Contrarian | Neil Young Archives, Neil writes that the album, with eight total songs, contains three written in 1963, which have remained unreleased. Neil explains the creative process beginning several months ago when he spent several days composing new lyrics and melodies in the early morning hours. In early March, the recording sessions began under a full moon at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studios in Malibu.

During the two days of recording with the Chrome Hearts, they recorded five new songs.  A search of the archives discovered previously unreleased early material.

The final mixing and mastering were completed in April under a full moon. In another statement on NYA titled "Moon To Moon,", Neil writes that the new music is a "special gift" that he "really feels".
RECORDING and LISTENING

4-21-26
Recording 'Second Song', my next studio album for Reprise records, was a lifetime experience. First, the music was breathing. Every song of the seven released on this album is straight form the heart.
Second, we tried to do something we have never done: record digital and analog masters at the same time.
We did this so we could show the difference we know and believe in, my friends and I. Analog was the beginning, and it never sounded better. Hi res digital is a clear second best. We are finishing the two versions and will release them both. The Digital hi res master and the Analog Vinyl. You can hear the difference, instantly. They are both beautiful if the song is. One is as deep as life. One is the highest quality counterfeit copy. If you are interested in the sound you can disappear into and lose yourself… over repeated listenings, Analog.

I made records like that in the beginning. I miss the quality people today hardly ever get a chance at hearing. Music is infinitely deep. Museum quality sound is analogue.

Try comparing these if you get a chance. For true analog playback, there can be no digital components in the player or amplifier or speakers. I do hope you enjoy the music no matter how you listen. We made it for all of us.

LOVE
Neil

Comment of the Moment: Seeing Neil Young 50 Years Ago

"Across The Water"
Hearse Theatre | Neil Young Archives
(Click photo to enlarge)

Hey there!

Thanks for everyone returning after much mischief and hilarity here at Thrasher's Wheat yesterday.

Admittedly, ARC Day/April Fool's day is made for these times of absurdity, irrelevance and general chaos.  But we gotta just have fun and laugh at least one day a year, you know what we mean, right?

Which brings us yet again to another Comment of the Moment on seeing Neil Young 50 years ago by Ron:
Haha, well done John Kwit and Thrasher. Made me laugh, which is welcome these days. [ed.: Amen!)

It's now the 2nd April, which is the 50th anniversary of my first Neil show at the great but long gone Glasgow Apollo. Nice to see Neil commemorating this and the London Hammersmith shows on NYA and by showing Across The Water all week in the Hearse Theatre.

I had hoped to mark this milestone by seeing Neil again in Glasgow this summer, but sadly it's not to be. I can always eat a peach instead I guess. To be honest I was more surprised when the tour was announced than when it was cancelled. Just hope they are all healthy and well.

Never would have thought 50 years ago I would still be enjoying Neil's music today, and be able to watch and listen to performances from that tour, and even the final encore from the Glasgow show itself. Hard to believe really.

So tonight I will be having a glass or two of wine to celebrate and watching and listening to Across The Water and Odeon Budokan. Oh and I will have to watch the film of Neil busking The Old Laughing Lady outside Glasgow Central station as well - mustn't forget that!
Thanks for the memories Ron!  What a long strange trip we've been on.

"Too Far Gone"
Neil Young - 1976

We had our 50th anniversary of our first Neil show back in 2024 so we know that feeling well of being too far gone.

Back to April 1st.

April Fool jokes are a long running rustie tradition going back to the '90's by playing ARC at full blast -- with the windows open -- on repeat for 24 hours.

Ever since, rusties have traditionally tried to raise the stakes with gags and jokes. TW also has a long tradition of ARC inspired April foolery over the years. On some years, literally breaking the Internet. (sorry -- not sorry)

For example, here are a few April 1 highlights from the TW Archives:

At the bottom of these posts, we often clearly indicate Happy Arc Day -- shorthand for "Don't Get Fooled Again". Even Archives Guy has commented in the past on some of our more clever attempts.

Even Neil gets in on the annual fun.  See Neil's tweet in 2019.

Anyways, all in good fun. Traditionally we avoid the internet on 4/1 and are always using our disCERNment the other 364 days of the year.

The fakery and chaff reach new heights practically daily.

TW does it's part in trying to prepare folks for The Big Shift -- separating the wheat from the chaff... or truth from lies ... or real from fake -- as best we can. At least our detractors can't say we didn't try...

But hey?!

Afterall, Lukas Nelson sings "Turn Off The News" and his brother Micah sings "Everything Is Bullshit".  Even Willie sings
"Everything Is Bullshit".

He started having thoughts
All kinds of ideas
Grew himself a little ego
Invented a new language
But then he built a tower
Designed a system of power
You know I read it in the paper
He made a tiny computer
That fits inside your hand
Communicate across the planet
Look back into the cosmos

"Everything Is Bullshit" lyrics by Micah Nelson

So "Speak The Truth" where ever you are, when ever you can, while you can.

Freedom of Speech. no harm, no foul. sticks & stones, OK?!
peace

Happy ARC Day!

Neil Young on NYA: "I'm so happy with my new album!"

Some good news from Neil Young on his recent recording sessions at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studios.

Recall that earlier this month we learned that Neil Young & Chrome Hearts had been in the studio with "8 songs recorded".

Now in a response to a letter from Wendy, Neil seems quite pleased.

"I'm so happy with my new album!

I honestly can't remember ever feeling so good about what we recorded. Everything happened so naturally… Chrome Hearts were totally in the groove. Songs! I'm really looking forward to sharing it with you all as soon as possible.

Songs…"
Nice to see the change in Neil's mood. Also, recall that in early March, Neil wrote:
"Politics today is sad and depressing for me. I can’t do it anymore."
And in other Neil Young news of late, the tracklist for the album "As Time Explodes" by Neil Young w/Chrome Hearts  has been revealed for this year's Record Store Day on April 18.

Lastly, still no word on re-scheduling the cancelled 2026 Europe Tour dates. Although we're hearing that something big might be announced in early April.  Stay tuned. :)
