Yes, There's Definitely A Hole in The Sky

Hole in The Sky

On the just completed Australia/New Zealand tour leg, Neil Young debuted a new song "There's A Hole In The Sky".

And anyone who's been paying attention to the weather lately knows that the extreme weather has now become the norm.

The message is unmistakable.

(There's a hole in the sky)

There's a hole in the sky

(There's a hole in the sky)

Don't forget it now

(There's a hole in the sky)

Hey pretty baby won't you take a ride with me
(I love the sun)

Make my engine run, be my destiny
(I love the sun)

Be my power, charge my battery.
(I love the sun)

(There is a hole in the sky)
There is a hole in the sky
(There is a hole in the sky)
Don't forget it now
(There is a hole in the sky)

Keep on working on the poisoned pipeline
(I love the sun)
Rake that money in and cross the border line
(I love the sun)
Keep on working you're running out of time
(I love the sun)

(There's a hole in the sky)
Don't forget it now
(There's a hole in the sky)
Don't forget it now
(There's a hole in the sky)

I'll never burn again that dying energy
(I love the sun)
'cause when I touch the sun it makes me free
(I love the sun)
I close the circle and fulfill my destiny
(I love the sun)

I love the sun
I love the sun

(There's a hole in the sky)

Don't you forget it now
Don't forget it now

(There is a hole in the sky)
Don't forget it now
(There's hole in the sky)
There's a hole in the sky
(There's a hole in the sky)

And just in case you are not familiar with the whole story behind The Great Hole In The Sky, here you go.

Geo-engineering is definitely not a good idea. Not convinced? See GeoEngineeringWatch.org.

And that's your Greendale news of the moment.

Doubter? Or Believer? You decide.

"It's all illusion anyway."

The Big Shift rolls onward. Consciousness is rising. Disclosure is near. Ascension continues.

No fear. Be the rain. Be the wheat. Just "be".

He has a line in there about crossing the border with a pipeline. So he knows what Canada is planning to do.
And I've never felt ashamed to be Canadian. Never, until now. The fact that Canada and Alberta have decided to exploit the oil sands in the high north is disgraceful to the planet Earth. It is the most near-sighted act I can think of, to destroy so much habitat, and so much future, just so we can delay the inevitable for a few more years.

Corporate greed rules our government and our country and our planet.

I believe the Ecuadorian predisdent who has renounced all oil production in his oil rich country. is the greatest human being this world has known.

Why can't Canada do such a thing? Don't touch the oil sands! Don't touch our land!

Oil is the life blood of the world economy so to imply that it should just stop is unrealistic and stupid.Until there is a viable alternative for the worlds energy needs this is the way it is and will be for at least 75 years in my opinion,as much as i don't like it,I understand the reality of whats going on in the world.

Actually,
The way it is is as long as there is money to be made off of oil, and as long as people like you care more about the 'economy' than the planet, then we will rape the planet and burn the blood, as you call it.

Just wait till the worlds oil reserves run out and then see how long for a viable alternative to appear.

EH, I never know just how to cope with your comments, but if you think that Canada enjoys some sort of exclusive status as the only country in the world to abstain from geo-engineering, then as usual you are sadly mistaken. As for your simplistic and erroneous view of Neil’s ethical behavior, I’ll leave you with my comment directed at another troll who shares your practice of limiting yourself to picking fruit off only the lowest branches:

“To call into question the consistency of someone who has taken a position to promote energy conservation as well as energy alternatives, and who has in fact actually done something about it, but who still engages in the status quo out of necessity, e.g. flying to a place to pursue his life work, is like saying that because the air is polluted that person should refuse to breath. If you must, think of it as losing the battle, but winning the war. It should be obvious, even to the trolls among us, that even in the best case scenario, like any transition, the transition to forms of energy that will protect both human life and the environment of necessity will involve a from-the-old-to-the-new period of time.”

Anon 10:52, I totally get what you’re saying, and didn’t take your comment to mean that you are a proponent of Big Oil. In fact, you said just the opposite. I agree that it is not possible to go from one day using oil, to the next day using something else, and acknowledge the possibility that we could be using oil for another 75 years, if for no other reason than I also acknowledge that a major driver of the oil paradigm is unbridled greed. I do not agree, however, that there are not viable alternatives. I just think that they are being held back by everything from patent office manipulations, to the out and out murder of innovators who didn't have the power to combat the "keepers" of the paradigm. Solar, wind (although not the present technology), geothermal, tidal, wave, electric (if generated by a different energy than what presently produces electricity and batteries) and even applications of industrial hemp and other bio fuels, are all viable alternatives with significant development already. One of the guys who was murdered a few years back developed a car that ran on water. His "mistake" was telling the Pentagon to shove it when they came calling.

Just think what could be achieved if we devoted a race-to-the-moon effort in industry and academia, backed by government initiatives, to begin a gradual withdrawal from oil. There are emerging technologies being developed outside the US that are virtual free energy devices that the US will not allow into the country. Tesla technology is being rediscovered and developed again. It is accepted across nearly every line that Tesla developed free energy, but that just prior to keeling over and expiring out of sheer mortification at the thought of foregoing the profits, his financial backers pulled the plug, relegating Tesla to feeding pigeons in Central Park, while Edison's bastardized- and profitable- technology advanced unabated.

I think it’s a crucial distinction to make that even in a hypothetical best case scenario (which I am dubious of, to say the least), geo-engineering was instigated by the fact that the sun has become unstable, and is emitting a dangerous excess of energy. As to why that is happening, that is a whole other discussion, but the reality is that while any activity by the human race can be either harmful or helpful, it will only ever be an effect and not a cause. The point here in this discussion is that the activity is enormously harmful.

However, I like the odds that technology has to ameliorate many of our problems (not overnight), but this assumes that we will have a viable world in which to see these changes take place. For many reasons I think the world will survive and make it through, despite the dire state of affairs we face, e.g. the madness of proponents of nuclear to build anew even in the face of Fukushima, but this means that as a world we must begin the good faith process of pushing the envelope in ushering in the next paradigm(s). People will say that the ability to move away from oil/coal/nuclear is pie in the sky, but a lot of others will say no, it's not. Fortunately, many times in the course of history a small minority of visionaries has provided seeds of change. This is where I choose to hang my hat at this time in history. I certainly could be wrong, but consider the alternative of doing nothing. The sun will continue to increase its heat, and denial, geo-engineering, bogus theories and destruction of the environment will continue to provide no solution. Human race, it’s time to “change your mind.”

Good post Greg i appreciate a intelligent conversation on important issues.I just don't think most people realize how dependent the world is on oil, from manufacturing to infrastructure.Hydrogen is probably the most realistic viable source as things stand now,as well as natural gas.A real solution will come from the private sector and not from government.Ironically it takes oil to manufacture solar panels, wind turbines, and everything else for that matter.I haven't heard anywhere that the sun is unstable, its been heating the earth for billions of years and I personally would like it to be a bit warmer than colder!

I think perhaps the Lincvolt project helps Neil feel less guilty about his massive use of jet fuel and gasoline driving around in those big V-8's.

Oil is a wonderful gift from Mother Earth - the most organic fuel we have. And Neil Young/Thrasher/me/anyone reading this will continue to use it daily in various forms.

So cut the crap.

I think it would be easier to accept "opposing views" and have a serious, intellectual debate on the topic if there were a single serious, intellectual person (ie: scientist) that agreed with your position. Until you can constructively add to a scientific discussion by pointing to some peer reviewed studies that back up what you are saying, then I think the rest of us will have to assume that your information is coming straight from the mouths of either big oil, coal, etc. (not serious) or right wing media (not intellectual).

@ Mr H - yes, it's a challenge dealing with the "hypocrisy".

What's troubling is those accusing of hypocrisy feel that all they need to do is lazily label someone a "hypocrite" and think they've made their case, refusing to do the heavy lifting.

It actually demonstrates that those who label others as a "hypocrite" are indeed the "hypocrite" themselves, sadly.

"Oil is a wonderful gift from Mother Earth - the most organic fuel we have. And Neil Young/Thrasher/me/anyone reading this will continue to use it daily in various forms."

So oil is the most organic fuel we have? Hmmm... More organic than the sun, the ambient temperatures just below the earths surface to create geothermal heating and cooling, the wind, waves, tides, plants growing in the ground? It doesn't appear to me that oil is more organic than any of these, but I'll tell you how oil is different. It's bad for human health, and bad for the environment.

We'll all continue to use oil because it's what we have to use right now, due in no small part to the indifference of the sociopaths who care more about profits than human health or being good custodians of the earth, such that they are holding us back from being able to use something else.

We have to use oil for the time being in the absence of alternatives, so either love it, or stop living. Love it, even though you know there is something better. Don't advocate for something different, just accept what is. If you do advocate for something different, you're a hypocrite. Logical? Uh, no. It doesn't take an environmentalist to point out the facts to support the viability of alternatives, or to point out the destructiveness of oil/coal/nuclear. It also doesn't take an environmentalist to recognize someone who just doesn't care, and who labels those who do as hypocrites.

Maybe we should re-frame the discussion. The earth is under attack, such that there are real questions as to how it is going to sustain itself. If moving away from things that damage it further, or limit its ability to recover and support life, is not the thing to do, then what is? I'm waiting for an answer. Unless, of course, we're back to the notion that the earth is not in danger. Really, I'm all ears.

I love oil.
I love trees.
I love the Earth.
I love Neil Young's music.

I love the fact that God placed all of the above mentioned things here in this world.

Carbon dioxide is not bad - it is what we exhale.

Oil is not bad - it is organic and has facilitated countless improvements to the modern human condition.

It seems like whenever the leftists in our society put the word 'big' in front of an industry, they are attempting to portray that industry as evil, money grubbing, etc.

Big Oil/Big Pharmaceuticals

But when Big Government is called out in that manner, it's a right wing nut job voicing their opinion.

Does Big Government ever get enough tax money? Does Big Government ever get too big with too much regulation?

Neil contributes more in one tour to carbon emissions than I ever will in a lifetime - not that I think carbon emissions are bad - they are natural.

Seems like "climate change" has replaced God for leftists. They don't have a spiritual sense of purpose (grand stereotype) so they latch onto whatever the cause of the moment is - Occupy Wall Street anyone??

Wake up leftists - oil was put here for our use and it will continue to be used into the future...

Human beings cannot alter the weather - sorry to be burst your religious bubble of Al Gore paranoia.

The University of East Anglia and their e-mail scandal proved to me that so-called scientists have been manipulating their data for years to get their intended results.

Sorry.

"...oil was put here for our use..."

"Human beings cannot alter the weather..."

Anon 1:05, just to be clear, I have a few questions for you.

Oil is not the only thing that God put here. We also have the sun, wind, geothermal temperatures, waves, tides, and plant. What is your objection to using these forms of energy?

Oil extraction and use causes damage to human, plant and animal life, as well as damage to the environment, e.g. toxicity, exhaust, acid rain, oil spills, volatile organic compounds, and waste oil. None of the alternatives mentioned above are harmful in these ways. For that matter, none of these alternatives have the potential to foul the water and air like Fukushima. Are you for damaging and harmful outcomes?

What is your objection to the gradual replacement of oil if it is possible that most of our way of life could be sustained by alternatives. Of course this is debatable, but just assume the hypothetical, there's no space to argue whether or not alternatives could replace everything oil provides. What if the alternatives could replace oil?

I agree that the greenhouse effect is a fraud, and also agree that human activity is not the original cause of warming, but are you seriously proposing that human beings cannot alter the weather in damaging ways, and worsen the effect of the cause? You obviously have not listened to the video in this post. You obviously either don't know about geo-engineering, or are choosing to ignore it to bolster your argument.

I have other questions, but I'd be interested to know your answers to these ones.

Of course Canada is selling out because the U.S. wants our oil, doesn't even really need to be mentioned.

I don't really care what you care about the most, but the 'economy' should never be used as an excuse for anything. Who cares about jobs! And money! That's all anyone ever says. We can lose jobs and create new ones. The kind of change I'm talking about would require a full on change in how we think about the world. Look what we've created in 100 years, and people/governments are too scared to push the abort button. Shit I mean in 2 generations we could change so much. (but we won't cause we just can't deal with short term economic consequences.
We live on planet Earth, which will rebound in millennia despite how poorly we treat it. That however doesn't mean that we won't have destroyed.

Hey I burn gas too, and so does Neil, but I understand how the destruction of nature can inspire so many songs from him. It's about inspiration, and Neil writes about things that "make" him write. You gotta keep the angst.
Anyway blah blah blah.

Greg you make some great points. I'm in favor of all forms of energy except nuclear. The problem with so-called green technology is that the demand and the cost effectiveness just isn't there yet. If it were, then companies like Solyndra wouldn't go bankrupt despite being given half a billion dollars in taxpayer subsidies.

Ethanol mixed with gasoline has been a disaster. Whose idea was that? Government.

I work hard for my money as I'm sure most of us on here do as well. So it's beyond disheartening to see this administration or any other just piss our money away on things like Solyndra - not to mention about a thousand other wasteful items.

Oil is a wonderful thing. Period. Yes it has potentially dangerous consequences in terms of accidents and spills, etc. But all of life is a risk and a potential accident at all times all around the world.

Earth has been around for billions of years. Human beings have been around for maybe 200,000 years - maybe.

That's a blink of an eye compared to the Earth's age and yet somehow certain "scientists" believe they understand the climate cycles?

Paleeese.
