NEIL YOUNG WITH CRAZY HORSE ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND TOUR

There have been a few whispers lately…the words ‘Neil Young’ and ‘Crazy Horse’, have been coupled tantalisingly with the word ‘tour’. In the know fans have seen news about shows overseas and waited with growing anticipation for the official word.

So it is with no small amount of delight that The Frontier Touring Company and A Day On The Green confirm the return of Neil Young with Crazy Horse for a series of arena and A Day On The Green winery shows in March 2013. With one show only in each location, the tour is one of Neil Young’s most extensive yet with shows in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hunter Valley, Surf Coast Geelong, Wellington and Auckland.

The tour will be Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s first headline tour since 2003’s critically acclaimed Greendale shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Crazy Horse, comprised of Billy Talbot (bass), Ralph Molina (drums) and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro (guitar), was recently described by Neil Young in his autobiography as “a vehicle to cosmic areas that I am unable to traverse with others."

The March 2013 shows promise to showcase both new material from their recently released album ‘Psychedelic Pill’ (out now through Warner) and the classic hits that helped make Neil Young a household name. Without a doubt the critical acclaim surrounding the tour dates so far illustrates just how Neil Young continues to pull massive crowds five decades into his impressive career.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s October Hollywood Bowl concert; “The made-for-each other singer and band seamlessly meld old and new amid a relentless, outstanding torrent of beautiful noise” while the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted “this tour serves as a reminder of how [Neil] became the Godfather of Grunge, and going on 67, he will still out-grunge anyone who gets in his path.”

The LA Times’ glowing review painted vivid pictures, including that of Neil Young “hunched over his Gibson electric guitar – known affectionately as “Old Black” – strangling notes out of its neck while standing in front of a Fender amp as big as the Ritz.”

Don’t miss out on seeing Neil Young with Crazy Horse live in concert this March 2013.

Critically acclaimed 'Greendale' where was that then? To my recollection it wasn't 'acclaimed' as it was Neil we let him off with his heavy handed concept album. Not quite a stinker but close. He toured with that and played it all the the way through much like 'tonights the night' except 'TTN' contained songs out of Neil's top draw inspired the deaths of Bruce Berry & Danny Whitten - open up your tired eyes.

I think the Greendale shows (note, shows, not necessarily album) were received well by the critics, weren't they?

Anyway, this is excellent news. I've seen him 4 times this year and was going back home to Australia for a holiday to visit family/friends in Perth and Brisbane. These dates coincide perfectly with my planned schedule, so I am beyond happy.

And fairly reasonably priced. At AU$150 and AU$100 price levels (plus fees) ... that is really cheap when you consider Australian shows are usually 2-3 times the price of US shows. It is basically in the ballpark of being equivalent to $50 ticket prices in the USA.

This is incedible. I'd love to visit the land down under. Nice indeed.

I remember a buddy of mine showing me a terrible review of the greendale show and using it as his excuse not to go. I went and it is still me favorite tour.

The tour legs of a centipede! Allright! Won't be heading there but am happy that the fans down under will get a chance to see Neil in his present Rockin' the Horse incarnation.

Doc, you out there? Hope you got the news.

As Neil seems to be back in Crazy Horse mode, this would be a great time to release the Toast sessions, the unreleased pre-Are You Passionate? recordings we were first teased with years ago. Goin' Home was recorded during the Toast sessions, as was the unreleased Gateway to Love. I'm realistic enough to know that the next Archives box set is probably far enough in the future that if we started saving up now, we *might* have enough to comfortably afford it, but going by the timeline that's been established so far, we would be due for another Archives album by some point next year...

Nothing wrong with Greendale, by the way. I don't think Neil really needs us to "let him off". He'll do what the hell he pleases anyway. We just have the choice of meeting it with either a positive or a negative mindset. If you insist on being negative about Neil's new material, then it's going to be a depressing time to be a Neil Young fan, because one thing's for sure: he's not doing the old stuff again.

Hot tip. Putting 2 & 2 together. Most requested artist at Bluesfest is Neil Young (recent article in Gold Coast Bulletin). NY & Crazy Horse just announced a tour of Australia & NZ, ending in NZ just before Bluesfest. Just received an email from Bluesfest that there will be a big announcement on 11/11. Coincidence or not.

Fucking stoked with this news!!!

Alot of artists leave out Australia but Neil was last here in 2009 solo and rocked the Big Day Out Festival which was the first time I saw him.

That performance won him countless fans, many young people like myself who are huge Neil Young fans

Neil Young Crazy Horse, fuck yeah!!!

Not being negative just being honest with my views. Don't want old stuff, I know he does what he wants that's all dandy. This forum is the place to express our views in a polite & honest way?

Everyone speak about the Toast sessions.Strangely in Waging Heavy peace Neil writes instead about the SWA sessions and seems to complain, because the album doesn't represent completely the sessions. English is not my first language, so maybe my interpretation is not correct or Neil isn't enough clear. This is the quote:That was the David' last album...There was more recorded there than what we used.We missed something"
This is strange for the following reasons:
1) SWA is a very long album. 2)The December sessions(6-17 December 1993).Only Gone To Heaven and Gone To Hell seem unreleased songs.3) February 1994 sessions. On Shakey, David Briggs said that Neil didn't have songs ready for the sessions and he had to write something in studio(one song for week)...
My interpretation is that Neil is speaking about the longer, original, unedited versions. The SWA songs were instead probably massively edited by David Briggs.

I think Greendale is one of my all time favourite NY albums and I hope he does something that good again someday. I love Americana and PPill a lot but compared to the brilliance of the lyrics and melodies and playing on Greendale they almost seem like quickie throwaways. On the new albums the guys are having a lot of fun, but on Greendale they were serious. I could listen to that album a hundred more times and still hear something new every time.

I must say I'm so surprised by all the love that Greendale gets here, it's one of my least favourite NY albums. It was voted very favourably in a poll here a year or two ago, and I remember being shocked by the results, I thought it would come out near the bottom.

It's interesting you mentioned melodies, Johan, because other than Bandit, what strikes me most about the album is the lack of melodies. That and the lacklustre playing (IMO) and the, well, corny lyrics. Anyway, I'm glad others enjoy it, I just wish I could understand what's so great about it. Maybe I will someday.

Btw, I just read somewhere else that Life is Neil's least successful album commercially. Surprised by that too, if it's true. Certainly not his best, but wouldn't have thought it sold so poorly.

Have a great day, everyone!

Len

I come back to NYC for the first time after two and a half years, and miss the Horse in Madison Square Garden by three weeks. I'm going to visit New Zealand for the first time in my life in March, and will miss the concert in Auckland by a week. The way this is going, Neil will play in my living room while I'm gone...

Awesome that the Horse are coming here - will try and catch either the Sydney or Brisbane shows.
