Billy Talbot:
“We got into this magical space together. And the rock & roll gods were with us the whole time.”“Poncho brought so much to the table, and we really miss him.
He’ll always be a part of Crazy Horse. But when he was in the group, we weren’t doing many ‘Heart of Gold’-style [acoustic] songs. With Nils in there with us, we can do that. Neil can get on the pump organ or piano, we can play along, and that spirit comes out where we’re like, ‘We can do this too.'”

Nils Lofgren: “The idea of using a producer means turning over control.
That’s not something in Neil’s nature. He used Rick as a guide. It was never like, ‘You’ve got to do it this way.’ That’s just not going to work with Neil, and Rick knows that. But he would sometimes say things like, ‘Why don’t you try that one on acoustic guitar?’ or ‘Try going down a different road on this one.’
Billy Talbot: “Rick is a real music fan.
He likes authentic things, things that happen naturally. He was really good for us.”

Young has floated the idea in the past that Micah Nelson might sub in for Lofgren on a Crazy Horse tour.
Nils Lofgren: “I’ve seen Promise of the Real play with Neil, and they’re fabulous.
But look, I just made this great record. I think it’s the best of the last three with Neil and Crazy Horse. It bums me out talking about being replaced for a tour.”
Talbot says that he’s heard nothing about future Crazy Horse shows, with or without Lofgren.
Billy Talbot: “I’d like to play some of these new songs, and some of the old ones.
But we really miss Poncho, and now Nils is going to be busy. Micah’s name has been mentioned. I wouldn’t be surprised if it worked.
It would be great if we could make an album with him before we did shows, though.”

Micah Nelson has the perfect energy to match with Crazy Horse. He’s a fearless musical explorer who has the ability to shift gears without any effort. Just his keyboard work on Noise and Flowers illustrates his musical prowess, not to mention his ability to create amazing textures on the guitar. But I definitely agree that he should record an album with the band first.

yes, seems plausible. May take a little while for that to sink in and gel.
Micah really does seem to be able to genre jump very smoothly. So no doubt he could do it musically speaking.
But will there still be spook? Or a new spookiness maybe?

Crazy Horse doing "Heart of Gold-style songs"? Uhhhh yeah, that's why I've always preferred Crazy Horse, they don't do "Heart of Gold-style" songs. Neil can do that with other folks. I need Crazy Horse to BURN.

Billy mentions in the article “We did ‘I Believe In You’ [on 1970’s After the Gold Rush],” says Talbot. “That’s a really good one, and it shows that side of Neil.”
And also: Hold Back the Tears, Look Out for My Love, the whole of Sleeps With Angels.
When the Horse does "Heart of Gold", its with a real disquieting edge.
Look Out for My Love - if that had been recorded with the Gone with Wind Orchestra, it wouldn't have worked, but when the Horse's first "Too Bad" gatecrashes that acoustic opening you are walking the hills in the gloom, you are searching and waiting in the frost.
So here's hoping tomorrow we get all facets of the Horse coming to town.

I discovered that Rick Rubin was guest on BBC Radio's Desert Islands Discs a few weeks ago. This is a very long running UK radio show where the guest chooses 8 tracks to take if they were marooned on a desert island. The show is a gentle interview interspaced with these tracks and why they are important. Rick had a Neil track - the above mentioned I Believe in You.
It's available at https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001dd83 (you may need a BBC login to play). The Neil related section starts at 22:45, where Rick describes an almost spiritual experience listening to this song.
Hambone in the UK
The Horse is a little more versatile than folks think. Toast and SWA show as much, among others. Hell, I would add Colorado to that class of Horse records—moody, sometimes mellow, but still making plenty of noise. High spook factor. Three years later, I still haven’t quite gotten over the sheer superb gumption of “You might say I’m an old white guy”, but there is more to the album than that one eye-opening moment.
And of course, line-up changes will affect the sound, transition from Pancho to Nils, etc. Neil, unfortunately, doesn’t have as many choices as he used to when it comes to playing with familiar musicians. It’s blessing Billy, Nils, and Ralph are still rocking. Or even Heart of Gold-ing.
Can’t overstate that I’m excited for new music. My Greedy Hand order shipped yesterday, but I may end up sneaking a listen on streaming in the interim. I’ve been listening to some Colorado and Barn cuts lately. It helps raise the right spirit. But World Record is no doubt its own creature. Love Earth struck me like a bolt out of the blue (or is it out of the green?), a song I never knew I needed but has been hugely refreshing in the best way. I’m keeping an open mind heading toward the album. It promises to be different, if little else.
Crazy Horse is plenty versatile, I never said they weren't, Sleeps With Angels is a top 10 all time Neil album in my eyes. Though I would never compare the music on SWA to Heart of Gold. Totally different styles.
I just prefer hard core Horse to mellow Horse, and I always will.
Richie, I didn’t mean to misrepresent/misconstrue your point. “Burn” means different things to different people in this context. Nothing negative or combative intended.
