Neil Young Announces 2014 Concert Dates

Neil Young has announced a four-night run at Carnegie Hall in New York City for January 6, 7, 9 and 10.

Tickets go on sale Monday (Nov. 4).

Pre-sale begins tomorrow Friday, Nov. 1 at 10 AM ET.

See official http://neilyoung.com for details and http://tix.concertmaps.com/neilyoung/.

Don't be denied.

As a side note, last time we posted pre-sale info, a few folks wrote in suggesting that we shouldn't announce this on TW. But here's our thinking on posting pre-sale info. Fan pre-sales have become somewhat of a joke. Every ticket scalper in the country has this info way in advance of the average fan. And the ticket brokers will be out in full force with their automated buying programs scooping up the tickets while we try and decipher those squiggly CAPTCHAs.

So we're just try to give Neil fans a heads up on this. The more legitimate Neil fans snagging tix means the fewer go on the market via scalpers. Which we think is a good thing.

Comment of the Moment: 2013 Bridge School Benefit Concerts

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Photo by John Green/Bay Area News Group
(Click photo to enlarge)

The wide range of reactions to this weekend's annual Bridge School Benefit Concerts continue to roll in.

The Comment of the Moment is on 2013 Bridge School Benefit Concerts by Dan1 in reference to the negative San Jose Mercury News review by Jim Harrington:
Yea the reviewer missed by a country mile, love how these days the masses can review the reviewer and so there's a bit more accountability than there was pre-internet.

Bridge School is a whole world in itself, they should make a video series of all the years and sell it to NetFlix ... so many incredible acts over so many years and then Neil and Pegi woven into the fabric of every one ... and then the kids, which is the real point, and their joy ... and the fact that the whole thing exists to help these courageous kids and families.

CSNY ... Stills' new song and overall spunk was really nice to see and the Young/Stills chemistry was palpable ... after reading some of the negative reviews of CSNY I was pleasantly surprised by their performance. I think the nitpicking about whether they practiced enough misses the point, its special to see these guys together after so many years, how many bands (if you can call these guys that) from the 60s are 100% intact? the sheer nostalgia of that is special. But more on nostalgia in a minute.

I personally love Singer w/out a Song ... not sure why all the negativity on it ... reunion or not? I'm betting against it ... clearly CSN wants it to happen and I'm guessing Neil is positively predisposed given these guys are his friends and they could benefit from such a tour. I keep thinking has Neil mellowed enough to stop innovating for a few months and go along with this? Then I think if they had a whole album of new material (instead of one song) or something else thematic (like LWW) then I think the set up would be perfect and it would happen ... but if not, I just cannot see Neil going out there and doing a nostalgia act especially some overhyped 40 year anniversary of '74 which itself was overhyped ... and if a Springfield reunion didn't work I struggle to see how this works ... this against the backdrop of the recent Horse reunion which was totally epic ...

I keep worrying we'll see a full Neil break for the first half of '14, we've ostensibly seen a break for almost the whole second half of '13 ... so, anything is better than nothing and I for one think within the realm of nostalgia acts these guys are impressive and its hard not to root for guys like Crosby and Stills despite my being pessimistic ...
Thanks Dan! Good points, as always. It is funny how some found CSNY under-rehearsed because if they had been all smooth andd polished then there would be complaints that they were too slick.

Someone actually commented on another thread that CSNY were much better in 1970?! Oh really? Like you say, name another band from the '60's still intact. OK, The Rolling Stones. Not bad company, we suppose.

As for a 2014 reunion? We shall see. Like so many things with Neil, the more we want a reunion, the less likely it'll be. So plan accordingly...

HIGHLIGHTS: 2013 Bridge School Benefit Concerts

"What Are Their Names"
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

The Bridge School Benefit - 10.26.13
(Click photo to enlarge)

Many, many highlights from this weekend's annual 2013 Bridge School Benefit Concerts in what will go down as another wonderfully memorable weekend.

For most, this was another triumphant weekend of great music and fun people coming together for a worthy benefit concert. Others -- as we'll come to later -- saw and heard things differently, naturally.

In the Neil department you could not have been disappointed this weekend whatsoever. You had Jack Johnson and Neil Young on "Out On The Weekend", My Morning Jacket and Neil Young on "Harvest Moon", Arcade Fire and Neil Young on "I Dreamed A Neil Young Song", Heart and Neil Young on "War Of Man", and Velvet Underground/Lou Reed tribute “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” with Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis, and My Morning Jacket. Plus the solo songs that opened each day and the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young headline reunion.

Lots of the little magical delights that make the Bridge School Benefit Concerts so special. Like Arcade Fire introducing a new song inspired by a Neil Young dream. See @ 06:07:00 YouTube below for "I Dreamed A Neil Young Song":

“I had a dream … We’re playing the song at soundcheck and I remembered, I woke up and remembered everything. I was half asleep and I started playing it and wrote down the lyrics and listened back to my tape recorder and it was basically a Neil Young. So this song is called ‘I Dreamed A Neil Young Song’ and Neil’s gonna come sing it with us. So this song is by Neil Young in my head.”
(Other highlights to check out include Neil Young joining My Morning Jacket for “Harvest Moon” at 5:10:00 and CSNY’s reunion at 7:45:10.

And the concert reacted to the news of the passing of the hugely influential Lou Reed. In tribute to Reed, My Morning Jacket covered the Velvet Underground’s “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” with Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Jenny Lewis, and more.

As we indicated above, not all were sufficiently impressed.

In a review in San Jose Mercury News headlined "Bridge School Benefit disappoints at Shoreline" by Jim Harrington:
It was an eight-hour acoustic concert that felt much longer, with very few of the expected highlights translating to lasting memories. Indeed, it may have been the least memorable of the roughly two dozen Bridge concerts that I've attended.
...
One of the most troubling issues with the Bridge concerts is that there are just too many acts. That means short sets, usually around 20-30 minutes, and accompanying set changes that last nearly as long as the performances. It's a poor use of everybody's time, unless, of course, you dig watching stagehands setting up instruments.
...
Then came the hipster-approved portion of the night, as My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire and Queens of the Stone Age filled the next three slots on the bill. Regardless of the quality of the offering -- and Arcade Fire did deliver the set of the night -- it was still too much new music grouped together. In retrospect, organizers should've mixed it up a bit, and given Heart and Johnson later starts, so that the majority of the crowd didn't have to go so long without hearing a song that it recognized.
It is sad that a veteran music critic like Jim Harrington seems to miss the entire point of the exercise, i.e., it's a benefit concert to help disabled kids. An acoustic concert for the kids and their parents who are literally sitting on the stage. About celebrating the miracle school known as "The Bridge" and what Neil and Pegi Young have achieved. About all the school staff, volunteers, and supporters.

Bridge Kids, Parents and Neil Young

Critic Harrington approaches the review with a perspective of wanting to be impressed and entertained. Which is OK but misses the point and is like saying Woodstock really wasn't that great because of the crappy sound and weak lighting.

Besides all of the once in lifetime combinations cited at top, where else in mainstream music will you encounter the following scene mid-point of the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young set?

David Crosby introduces the song "What Are Their Names" by saying that "We're political." Next, Neil Young pulls up his hoodie and begins to stalk the stage (see top photo) -- all in clear reference to the whole Trayvon Martin saga.

Again, the weekend allows one to experience many, many hours of music, an incredible diversity of artists, and some one-off combinations that often work out splendid.

So don't be a doubter. Be a believer. Take a chance on love.

A Message To Bridge 2013 Attendees

Neil and Pegi Young

First, to everyone attending this weekend's Bridge School Benefit Concerts, have a wonderful time.

If you've attended before, than you know what to expect. If this is your first Bridge trip, then you have much to look forward to. So open your heart and let the magic of music and love flow.

If you've ever attended a Bridge School Benefit Concert, then you know what to expect. Lots of great music, lots of good friends and all for a wonderful cause.

Bridge School kids interview Neil Young

There are many, many things which strike us after attending the Bridge School Benefit shows over the past years. Yes, there are the friends and music. The Bridge Benefit Concerts are not really so much a Neil Young concert, but much more a celebration of a diverse range of bands of up and comers.

But then there are the kids.

We all say that it's all about the Bridge kids every year. Not the music but the cause. And you just can not come away from the weekend just totally in awe of the spirit and strength of these kids and their families. The struggles they face make our problems meaningless, although that don't make them go away.

"One Of These Days" - Bridge School Benefit Concert 2010

It really isn't possible to express how these concerts leave an impact on a whole another level, much of which traces directly to what Neil & Pegi have done with the Bridge School, the kids, the parents and the artists. At the end of the 2 day concert -- after some 16+ hours of music -- everyone is pretty much drained and spent by the time Neil & Pegi take their final bows. Much of the 15,000+ crowd has long gone, leaving a dense crowd of die-hard Neil fans down in the lower sections first dozen or so rows. And Neil & Pegi see who has remained and realize briefly that what they look out on are the extended family of the global Neil community. And for a moment they often are at a loss, just saying "Thank you, Thank you, Thank you". They feel our love and we feel theirs. And it is good.
And so we say to all of our dear friends, the kids, all of the artists, and Neil & Pegi, "Thank you".

The photo above of Neil and Pegi Young at the conclusion of the Bridge School Benefit Concerts last month says more than we could ever put into words. Jill "Sweet Sweet Smile" Gottlieb-Seagraves's photo of Pegi & Neil captures in an instant much of the love and warmth that permeates the weekend's festivities. As many of you know, spending a few days out in Northern California with good friends and good music is a therapeutically soothing experience that -- for us -- lasts long after we finally return back home to our regular lives. Seeing all of the performers interact with the Bridge kids and watching their heartfelt reactions is truly gratifying and soul enriching.
As Eddie Vedder said at the Bridge concerts : "The kids are the teachers. We are the students."

Sadly, we will not be out at the Shoreline for this year's festivities. We'll miss everyone and hope to be back out again next year.

So everyone have a truly beautiful uplifting weekend. We love you all.

Comment of the Moment: Caught You Knockin' At My Cellar Door Release

Yesterday, we brought you the news of the upcoming release of Neil Young "Live at the Cellar Door" on December 10th .

Oddly -- or maybe not -- this new release of old material from the Archives Performance Series did not sit well with some.

For some, any new or old Neil is better than no Neil at all.

Which brings us to the Comment of the Moment by the ever interpid and prolific Anonymous:
As an elected representative of Neil's fans in their mid-20s (we all think completely alike), I must say this release does little to excite me. In fact, my gut instinct is to ILLEGALLY download this, seeing as I saved up for the blu-ray archives specifically for extra planned downloads such as this.

Normally, I would never even think of doing that. But it shows a lack of respect for the fans in my opinion to promise so much and deliver so little, and that naturally makes me reluctant to part with any more money. "Once bitten, twice shy" is the expression, I think. I don't feel bad about saying all this, because I know many others feel the same.

Personally, I would LOVE to hear the Bluenotes live album, the 76 Crazy horse tour, the Eldorado tour, an OPL show (if any were taped). I would also love to see Weld and RNS on blu-ray. And a 1993 Booker T show! ...And the film of The Dublin show in 1995 with Pearl jam!

And on and on....!

Unfortunately these releases are so unbelievably slow by modern standards that by the time even half of those are released, Neil will be 90 years old (a.k.a dead), and so will most of the fans. There will be nobody left to listen. So learn something from the modern artists who are thriving right now, Neil, and speed things up a bit!
OK, fine. We respect your opinion. And we could sing a Rolling Stones song about not getting what you want, but what you need.

But we'll let some other folks respond. Like SD who said:
Can you name some of the modern artists who are releasing their back catalogues of unreleased albums and live performances and Archives at such a rapid rate?

Can you provide some examples to substantiate your argument?

Neil Young fans have been extremely fortunate in the wealth of material, much of it in incredible quality, over the years that has been released. To think otherwise because you didn't get something you wanted is ridiculous. Very few artists have released this volume of material over their careers.
And of course, folks always bring up what Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, etc are doing with their legacy material.

Sure, it would be terrific to have everything available now -- Oceanside/Countryside, Homegrown, Carnegie Hall, Dorothy Chandler, Toast, etc. But that doesn't seem to be The Shakey Roadmap does it?

So what exactly is the Archives Performance Series release plan? Well, given that Cellar Door release is #2.5, there may not really be a master plan?

If you're keeping score at home, here's where things stand:

00 Sugar Mountain '68
01 Riverboat '69
02 Fillmore East 3/70
02.5 Cellar Door late 70
03 Massey Hall '71

09 A Treasure '84-85
12 Dreamin' Man '92

So, who;s going to be knockin' at the Cellar Door?

NEW RELEASE: Neil Young "Live at the Cellar Door" on December 10th

Neil Young "Live at the Cellar Door"

As we reported this summer, Neil Young's next release will be Live At The Cellar Door.

Live At The Cellar Door was recorded in Washington D.C. during a six-show stand between November 30th and December 2nd, 1970. This will be release 2.5 in the Archives Performance Series and released on on December 10th.

Probably of most interest to fans will be the solo piano version of "Cinnamon Girl".

The track-listing for Live At The Cellar Door is as follows:

Side One:

Tell Me Why
Only Love Can Break Your Heart
After The Gold Rush
Expecting To Fly
Bad Fog Of Loneliness
Old Man
Birds

Side Two:

Don't Let It Bring You Down
See The Sky About To Rain
Cinnamon Girl
I Am A Child
Down By The River
Flying On The Ground Is Wrong

Note that "See the Sky About to Rain" on Archives Vol. 1 Disc 6 is an edit of Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 shows.

It seems there's been a change in thinking on the release. From a Oct. 2009 interview with Guitar World magazine:

Guitar World: So how many Archives sets are we looking at?

Neil Young: Maybe four, maybe five. It depends on how much cutting and paring down we do, and how much we get into using BD-Live, which is a really remarkable thing. It's tremendous. It's remarkable because we really only saw that aspect of it for the first time six or seven months ago....One thing that we figured out is that we're going to be able to do progressive download updates. So for instance, around 1970 I played a show at the Cellar Door club in Washington, D.C. That show was taped, but we don't have enough great takes to release it as its own disk.

Instead, I'll probably make the songs available as downloadable updates to Archives. We'll drop them onto the timeline one at a time... One thing I'll tell you about the next volume of Archives is that Time Fades Away II is in there. And it's interesting because the whole thing has a different drummer than what was on that album. I switched drummers halfway through the tour- Kenny Buttrey was in there for the first half, and Johnny Barbata came in for the second. It's a completely different thing, with completely different songs. So that's interesting. There's lots of stuff like that that I'm working on right now for the second volume.
From Steve Hoffman Forums:
All the 6 shows(30th November,1,2 Dec.1970) were recorded by Henry Lewy for a planned double album combined with the electric songs at the Fillmore East. The Cellar Door were 8-track recordings. It's likely that some multitracks from these concerts still survive . Most of the original reels from these shows were shown at The Visit To The Archives(2000, Neil.Young.com). Some of the master logs are also listed in the Archives Book. The Neil Young Archives have all the 2 tracks from these shows. Sugar Mountain by Tom Hambleton takes his information from the Ghost on The Road(Pete Long), which sources are provided by Joel Bernstein. Neil promised the release of this record in Waging Heavy Peace, so this is really a great news.
Obviously, there's a lot going on with "The Cellar Door".

"The Cellar" was a Winnipeg club that Neil Young & The Squires once played.

The song "The Needle and the Damage Done" has the lyrics "knocking on my cellar door" line.

A very young Nils Lofgren talked his way backstage and introduced himself to Neil Young at Cellar Door club in Washington, D.C.

I caught ya knockin' at my cellar door...

FLASHBACK: Bridge School Benefit Memory: R.E.M. & Neil Young on "Country Feedback" - 1998

With the Bridge School Benefit concerts coming up this weekend, here's a favorite memory -- R.E.M. & Neil Young on "Country Feedback" from Bridge School Benefit in 1998.

This performance is -- without a doubt -- one of R.E.M's finest of one their most loved songs.

Which -- naturally -- would also make this one of our favorite tracks on the Bridge School Concert 25th Anniversary package set.

Also, one of our all time favorite Bridge moments occurs at about ~1:10. Watch it and feel the sheer awe of Michael Stipe as he takes in the moment.

Magic.

Breathless.

Neil Young's acoustic lead on the song is just so simply stunning in his most achingly acoustic, hauntingly-beautiful-spook-in-the-muse transcendence.

The DVD playing through the ol' hi-fi stereo at "11" is well... in the parlance of our times... just freakin' awesome.

Also, don't you just love the smile from Peter Buck. Then the way Neil gives Pete a nice quick hug right at the end. And how about Neil's beard from back then? Grizzly. :)

Bridge School Concert 25th Anniversary package set.

More on 25th Anniversary 2011 Bridge School Benefit Concert.

ps - "Ambulance Blues" the same night wasn't bad either.

Inspiration: The Session Sound of Neil Young's "Harvest" Album

Something interesting here where a group of musician's tries to re-create a particluar album session sound.

From Zippah Recording Studios | Tuesday Night Recording Club – Sep. 18, 2013 Inspiration: Neil Young’s “Harvest” Album A Blog by Record Producer Brian Charles:
Besides having to find top-notch players, a big part of recreating these sounds is also about trying to recreate situations. Reading interviews with engineer Elliot Mazer, I learned that the drums, steel, bass were all recorded live (together) along with Neil’s lead vocal and acoustic guitar.

This is incredibly challenging on so many levels…for instance, the drums (being the loudest instrument in the room) will certainly also be picked up in the acoustic guitar mic, which is the softest sound in the room. This is also the case for the vocal mic. Apparently Neil was sitting about five feet from the drums…so Neil’s mics were definitely going to also be considered part of the drum sound. An inexperienced engineer might often move the acoustic guitar/vocal setup as far away from the drums as possible in the room in effort to minimize the spillage into the mics, but This is usually worse…although the level of the drums spillage is lower in the acoustic/vocal mics, the dimensions of the room become evident in the sound…the listener actually hears more room pollution, which achieves the opposite result. It’s better to minimize the detect ability of the space, and use as few mics as possible.

We set Aaron up about five feet from the drums, with a gobo (divider) placed between him and the kit. This helped to reduce reflections as well as direct spillage into the vocal and acoustic guitar mics. Aaron’s guitar a 1976 Martin D-28 (Neil used a Martin D-45) was mic’d with an AKG C-414 microphone in hypercardioid pattern. Originally, Mazer used a Neumann KM 86 (which we didn’t have). My engineer Annie and I matched up the frequency response charts with some different mics and found similarities between the KM86 and the AKG (when in hypercardioid) with a very slight boost at 3khz which we did with console EQ.

On the drums we used four microphones…kick, snare, hi-hat and a single overhead. To replicate the signature kick drum sound I used a 60′s Rogers 20″ kick drum with no front head and heavily muffled it with a folded up bath towel, and a sandbag to keep it in place. I had planned on using a pillow with duct tape to hold it in place like Kenny Buttrey, but I failed on procuring that particular piece of equipment by the time ttracking-600he players showed up (it’s always something).

Pearl Jam's "Lightning Bolt" Dedicated to Neil Young.

Per liner notes, the new Pearl Jam album "Lightning Bolt" is dedicated to Neil Young.

The image above is from the CD booklet.

The photo appears to be from when Pearl Jam was joined by Neil Young on 'Rockin' in the Free World" Encore Last Night in Toronto in 2011.

The image above seems to be a fan generated meme.

Also, in the short film by Danny Clinch for "Lightning Bolt", check out Eddie Vedder's passenger's (Danny Clinch) t-shirt at the end of the video.

(Thanks Astrolee & Kathy !)

Pearl Jam on Neil Young's Muse - NPR

A lengthy interview with all the members of Pearl Jam on their new album Lightning Bolt on Pearl Jam In Conversation With Judd Apatow : NPR.

The entire interview is worthwhile, but one segment in particular must be checked out at ~37:30 when the interviewer starts discussing obtaining permission for use of a Neil Young song in a film.

Pearl Jam band members go on at length at their experience with Neil Young and his Muse.

Eddie Vedder says: "He's getting closer and closer to the core."

Neil Young To Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada: "[Your] Head is Stuck in the Tar Sands"

Official Neil Young website

Last week, Neil Young posted a message on his official website Shakey's Garage asking the question "How hard should I try?"

Now -- it would seem - that Neil has his answer... very hard.

Neil Young has posted another message this weekend and this one is addressed towards the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper:
Harper's Head Stuck in the Tar Sands

I was amazed to find that Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada, my home country, has his head stuck in the tar sands of Alberta and has forgotten about his responsibilities to Canadians. Trans Canada, a company he backs, is actively pursuing the goal of crossing the United States with the Keystone Pipeline, a money maker for a chosen few that will cause incredible environmental damage. If it goes through it will be the shame of Canada, an environmental disaster that could have been stopped by responsibility and wisdom. It will not benefit America with energy or new jobs. The oil is for China and the world market, not the USA. With only 35 permanent jobs the added US employment is so small as to not even count.

In light of the United Nations concluding that Climate Change is definitely a result of man's activities, I think it's a good idea to learn as much as I can about it.

One thing I did was visit http://www.keystonetruth.com/ to learn about the Keystone Pipeline and its direct relationship to Climate change. It's very informative. If you are on the edge and might want to know more, then it's a great place to go.

Neil Young
10/5/13
So. If one visits http://www.keystonetruth.com/, one will find "The Truth" -- something it seems often in short supply these days. But you decide for yourself what is "The Truth".

If we had to guess, this may go down easier than Neil Young's last trip into the Tar Sands, which wasn't too pretty.

But that's what happen when Truth gets spoken to Power. Strange things happen when worlds collide.
