For July 4, Neil Young Archives has posted USA 250 - LWW 2026  -- a revisited Living With War Volume #2. (Thanks Road Dawg!)

Neil writes on NYA:
"There are small changes within the songs. The mix is refocused on now. The choir is huge and has a band."

Released in 2006, Neil Young's album Living With War was a direct confrontation of the need for a call to action.

Once completed, Neil played the album for his label Reprise and than immediately gave a live interview to CNN. For many fans, this was Neil at his finest -- speaking truth to power.

"Ohio" Revisited: Is Song by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young An Anthem For Our Times?

Crosby Stills Nash & Young
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Earlier this year in January -- after the tragic events in Minneapolis, Minnesota, we ran a post titled "Ohio" Revisited: Is Song by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young An Anthem For Our Times? from Rock 'n' Roll with Me  by Ellen from Endwell.

So is the song "Ohio" "an anthem for our times?". While the jury may still be out, our readers here were somewhat divided on the answer. Regardless, the CSN&Y song "Ohio" is a powerful song still resonating 56 years later.

Thrasher's Wheat has been observing the anniversary of this event for decades now, sadly.

We can only continue to ask the pertinent question: "How many more?"

Still "Living With War", v. 3.0 & "the most courageous album of 2006" by Neil Young

Living With War by Neil Young - 2006

And here we are still living with war in the 21st century.

It all started for us back in 2006 -- and nothing has been the same since -- when an obscure blog link popped up over in the right sidebar here on Thrasher's Wheat.

According to the blog Last Left Turn Before Hooterville, a new Neil Young album was being recorded. The blog, written by a member of a 100-voice choir, said the album would contain the lyrics:
"Let's impeach the President for lyin'!".
Once completed, Neil Young played the album for his label Reprise and then immediately gave a live interview to CNN. For many fans, this was Neil at his finest -- speaking truth to power.

    war-neil-interview.jpg
    Neil Rocks on CNN

Neil Young's album "Living With War" would go on to become music's "Fahrenheit 9/11" film equivalent. And the rest is history, as some say.

"If nothing else, Living With War was the most courageous album of 2006."

(Complete TW coverage of the Living With War controversary at Neil Young News: 04/01/2006 - 05/01/2006 and Neil Young News: 05/01/2006 - 06/01/2006.)

In 2022, as the war drums started beating for War in Ukraine ("Living With War", v. 2.0), Neil Young penned an editorial on  Neil Young Archives: VIEWPOINT: The Apotheosis of War.

    “The Apotheosis of War”
    by Vasily Vereshchagin
    (Click photo to enlarge)

In a followup, Neil Young writes "Streets are the Stage for Change" and asks:

"THE RUSSIAN PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP FOR HUMANITY and let the whole world know who they really are."

With military madness continuing to kill our countries, what's the average citizen of the world to do?

Obviously, we're Still Living With War -- both in our minds and hearts -- because it's all just deja vu, all over again and again and again ...

As Neil Young has stated: "History is a cruel judge of overconfidence."

    Neil Young Signs "PEACE"

More "Shock And Awe" was coming our way.

    deja-vu-film-poster-sm.jpg
"CSNY DEJA VU" Film Poster - 2008

Part performance, part documentary and commentary, the film CSNY Déjà Vu is a call to peace and remains relevant today. Because if we ignore the lessons of history, we do so at our peril and increase the likelihood of repeating the same mistakes.

From album "Living With War", the title track's lyrics continue their prescient revelations on today's times. so, carry on.

[Try to remember peace (visualize) ]

    "I join the multitudes
I raise my hand in peace
I never bow to the laws of the thought police
    I take a holy vow
    To never kill again
    To never kill again

I'm living with war in my heart
I'm living with war in my heart and my mind
I'm living with war right now"

Despite what the critics wrote negatively about the album -- if nothing else -- Living With War was the most courageous album of 2006.

More at Commentary on Politics of CSNY Freedom of Speech Tour.  (Ah, those were the days.  If you think you're stressed today, you should've been here back in 2006. or is just deja vu all over yet again!?)

And so here we are in 2026 with "Living With War", v. 3.0.  We are in a loop and we are not learning our histories and repeating the same mistakes.  Break the cycle. Make peace cool again. Now.

And we'll probably do this again in 2032 ("Living With War", v. 4.0) ... if only ... at the least, for our "Families".

    peace

ps- apparently, Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts have been in the studio, with "8 songs recorded".  A "Living With War", v. 3.0 maybe?  Well, we shall see and hear eventually.  Hopefully the new songs provoke another generation to support peace. We are dreamin' people ...

pss - Note that LWW is now the default playback song of the day on NYA. thanks Jake!

Comment of the Moment: Joel Bernstein Interview & The Laurel Canyon Scene

Our Comment of the Moment is from "Joel Bernstein Interview | The Bob Lefsetz's Podcast" by Greying Rider:
Thank you so much for this.

I've always loved Joel's work and to hear him talk about his life is wonderful. There is something about the way he (like Nils and Cameron) was accepted at such a young age by Joni, Elliot, Neil, Graham and the whole Laurel Canyon scene that I struggle to get my head around. But it points to how kind, constructive and hard working all these people were.

It is sometimes easy to assume people got into the scene by just being in the right place at the right time, though the way Joel talks about how much time he spent on learning Joni's songs and mastering photography shows how you need to have a driving passion.

Often, one makes one's own luck in life.
Thanks so much for the Comment of the Moment Greying Rider!

Glad you enjoyed the  "Joel Bernstein Interview".  Talk about being in the right place, at the right time?!  It does seem that the whole 60's Laurel Canyon scene really was like traveling into another dimension.

More on the legendary 1960's Laurel Canyon scene ...

"Ohio" Revisited: Is Song by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young An Anthem For Our Times? | Rock 'n' Roll with Me

    Crosby Stills Nash & Young
     (Click photo to enlarge)

The following Substack "Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Revisited  |  Rock 'n' Roll with Me  by Ellen from Endwell asks the question if the song is "An anthem for our times?".  (Thanks John K.!)

Spoiler alert -- yes & no.

"Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Revisited

    by Ellen from Endwell

Given the popularity of my post on the song “For What It’s Worth (Stop, Hey What’s That Sound)” by Buffalo Springfield, which is now close to 4,000 views and rising (available here), I have to conclude that people are desperately searching for a way to make meaning out of what’s happening around the world and in their own countries.

In particular, I suspect that people are trying to figure out some way to respond to what they feel are steps in an egregiously wrong direction—perhaps even illegal, immoral, unethical, or tyrannical—by those in charge of running things, without risking themselves, their family, friends, and communities, or their way of life in doing so.

My post on the song “Ohio” is now starting to get the same attention—a song written and put out by Crosby Stills Nash & Young in the immediate aftermath of the Kent State Massacre in 1970, which was soon thereafter followed by the Jackson State Killings.

If you’ve been around as long as I have, you’ve been feeling a strong sense of deja vu for a while now. We have been here before. We have been through something eerily similar to this. That’s why I’m sharing the “Ohio” post below, so you can see why I’m saying that.

I do believe in my heart, mind, and soul that, as Martin Luther King declared in his remarkably inspiring sermons and talks using the title of a famous gospel song as his key message, “We Shall Overcome.”

As Dr. King explained, we shall overcome not simply because we wish to do so. We shall overcome because “somehow the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice” and because “truth crushed to earth will rise again.”1 If you need inspiration in these difficult times, here it is:

And here it is in the song whose title he cited, “We Shall Overcome,” sung by the glorious Joan Baez. (You can find the other two iconic versions, one by gospel legend Mahalia Jackson and the other by the famous folk singer-activist Pete Seeger, here and here.)

Herewith, without further ado, my previous post on the tragic events provoking the creation of the song “Ohio” by Crosby Stills Nash & Young.

This is a fantastic song in so many ways. Thank you, Neil Young and CSNY.

REVIEWS: First Impressions: Live at Fillmore East, 1969 by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

    Live at Fillmore East, 1969
by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
     (Click photo to enlarge)

    From The Old Grey Cat:

Live at Fillmore East, 1969 captures the magic. The first half is acoustic, the second electric, while the sound—overseen by Stills, Young and John Hanlon—is pristine. Everything I’ve read indicates that it hails from the late show on the 20th. If the Neil Young setlist site Sugar Mountain is accurate, then, a few songs were left out and the set order tweaked—similar to what Young did with his archival Young Shakespeare a few years back. Between-song patter is also excised.

Doesn’t much matter. What’s here is phenomenal. While Young waits backstage, Crosby, Stills and Nash weave ethereal wonders during the initial stretch of songs, with the opening “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” giving way to a cover of the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” while Crosby’s “Guinnevere” is absolutely stunning thanks to Nash’s genteel harmonies, while Nash’s “Our House”—which he’d record for Deja Vu—will leave you singing along. Neil saunters to stage center for “On the Way Home,” which rightly receives a round of applause at the start. “I’ve Loved Her So Long,” a highlight from his solo debut LP, is a stripped-down delight that’s buttressed by the addition of Nash’s harmonies.

The electric section is as fine, if a tad more ragged, with Crosby singing his heart out on “Long Time Gone,” and the band sailing into the sky on “Wooden Ships.” The highlight, however, is a riveting 16-minute “Down by the River” that floods the brain with dopamine.

    From Davy's Flicks:

As always, thanks for the reviews OGC & Davy!

54 Years Later: "Ohio", Kent State, Student Protests & The Tin Soldiers March On | #MayTheFOURBeWithYou

School Shootings ... "How many more?"

53 years ago, on May 4, 1970 at ~12:25 PM, a school shooting took place on the campus of Kent State University, Ohio.

Remember those days when students were brave enough to march in the streets and end a war?

Now that today's college students have been safely muzzled by crippling loan debt and "woke" education, there is little need for authority to teach students a lesson similar to that educational day of May 4, 1970. It's been 50 years since shots rang out across a college campus, leaving four dead in Ohio and the lives of so many of that generation changed forever by the day's events.

And so, the tin soldiers march on and on... in Vietnam. Balkans. Iraq. El Salvador. Afghanistan. Libya. Syria. Yemen. Ukraine. Sudan. Palestine.

Nixon coming. Reagan coming. Bush coming. Obama coming. Trump coming. Biden coming. etc

So we here at Thrasher's Wheat look forward, as we look back to that fateful day at Kent State. In the meantime, rest assured that the mainstream media will ignore this anniversary of real news, while busy fabricating the latest fake news.
