I have seen Neil Young play live 15 times or so and I was astounded by his performance at Farm Aid 2013. The man answers JM's compliment about him being maybe the best songwriter of our generation by playing cover tunes, first a tip of the hat to Dylan, then Gordon Lightfoot, a few more that I was unfamiliar with, and then Phil Ochs. Between songs, he gives the middle finger to Monsanto and Big Oil and lays out the case for getting off our asses and saving the world from climate change. And he goes on to share with the crowd that, in a chat backstage before showtime with Pete Seeger, they discussed the suicide of Phil Ochs and Neil tried to encourage PS that he couldn't have done more to stop Ochs. Then Neil discusses Kurt Cobain and reveals that Kurt tried to reach out to Neil several or more days before he "blew his head off" which left Neil with a deep pain he has never discussed publicly. And it was all LIFE-affirming. He even verbally squished some idiot who shouted "Lets get on with it!" and went on to play an intricate Phil Ochs song. Wow. Incredible. Thank you Neil Young! Need to point out that Neil is my favorite artist of all time.
However, I thought the Farm Aid shows main object was to support local farmers struggling and bring awareness around the importance of eating/growing organic.

I just finished watching Neil's show and he was going on and on about biofuels (yes I know that is a big deal to him with lincvolt etc).
What he never seems to say anything about is the fact that the diversion of agricultural land from food production to producing energy crops has pushed up food prices in Europe and exacerbated global hunger.

A recent research shows how the amount of food crops consumed as fuel by G8 countries annually could have fed more than 441 million people for a year.

And what about the fact that you need to grow crops in the same rate as you harvest it for it to be carbon neutral?
Also the conversion of land into agricultural use will mean a massive release of CO2.

We know petroleum is not the future! But neither is the biofuel.
What seemed to be a good idea some years ago is turning out to be a costly, greenhouse gas-releasing, hunger- and land grabs-causing disaster.

In my opinion it's pretty strange talking so highly about this thing on a benefit show for local farming in America. Please do some more research Neil!

Hybrids with batteries charged on hydrogen or high-pressure air is a much more interesting point of view regarding solving the climate changes.

Regards, environmental engineer Norway

They are showing the Webcast again during a 24 hour period. Dave Matthews is on right now (8:15 am edt), so you can plan accordingly. Seems like they will play it three times in total, and we can catch Neil's set again tonight right after Breaking Bad.

Hopefully they have the same segway from Neil to Willie that they had last night. Carlene Carter did an astounding version of Troublesome Waters, with her guitar and Mickey Raphael on harmonica. Do not miss this; one of the greatest of The Carter Family songs, and written by her grandmother and grandfather, it's a towering tribute to music and family.

Just watched Neil's show on Youtube. Couple of surprising covers:

Early Morning Rain (Lightfoot), Since I Met You Baby (Ivory Joe Hunter), Reason to Believe on pumporgan (Hardin) & Changes (Ochs).

Always nice to hear Neil but for some reason I rarely love his Farm Aid shows. They're never as good as his 'regular' shows.

The above covers could have been transposed to a higher key. Neil's voice sounds more intimate and emotional when he sings in a higher key.

Overall the show features a bit too much campfire music (I never liked Heart of Gold for that reason).

First of all, can we maybe retire the phrase "campfire music" when making comments and comparisons about music. It's become meaningless and a bit trite through overuse; what Mr. Harvey used to call "a hamburger word" back in HS English class. And I guarantee that what Neil Young played Saturday night was in no possible way, shape or form anything that you can objectively call "campfire music", at least not when he plays it.

Neil's entire set at this year's Farm Aid was all a covers set. That's right--everything he played was a cover. Think about it: what are the two Neil Young songs that everyone knows, (most) everyone loves, everyone plays a version of. My God, Heart of Gold just might be the single most covered song in the past twenty or thirty years, and maybe in the history of music (at least if you exclude Beatles songs). How many times have you been somewhere--the grocery store or any other store, the post office, the dentist office--and heard those familiar chords? It's in our collective cultural DNA.

And Neil played both songs exactly like you hear them in your head. There was virtually no change in either version, they were right in the middle of his set, and it was the only time on stage when he wasn't challenging or confronting his audience and fans. Does anyone out there think that was just a coincidence? That it was really "...I don't know what I'm gonna do next" that made him suddenly decide to do those two songs, and only those two songs? Especially after John Mellencamp's intro..and then hear Neil's intro for Willie. He's saying it's not just about me, it's about all of us, it's about the music that we made and will continue to make.

The songs he chose to do were all connected; the fun is trying to figure out just how. Hardin and Ochs; Ivory Joe and Sonny James; Gordon Lightfoot. I absolutely loved his version of Early Morning Rain; we were mesmerized watching it. Why did he choose to start his set with this song?

The entire day at Farm Aid had an underlying theme celebrating the music that came before and that still is 100% today and tomorrow. Amos Lee did an incredible version of A Change Is Gonna Come; fifty years later this song just continues to grow and grow. Willie did more covers than I can ever remember, and not just the ones that are part of his regular set. Texas Flood was a wonder to behold, and a wonder to watch. Lukas honoring his dad and Stevie Ray, while looking at times like a young Kris Kristofferson. And the circle is truly unbroken. Good Hearted Woman plays, and it looks like Willie might still see a bit of Waylon right up there with him.

Carlene's performance of Troublesome Waters so gently epic. Every Carter and Cash family member tells their own story through this song, and also the story for each one of us. Glad to see you looking so great and sounding so wonderful, Sweety! Just keep staying Stronger, avoid the "special diet" and Keep On The Sunny Side whenever times get rough.

If Poncho's hand was okay, then Neil's performance would have been something else. For my money, he figured out something that was new and different, then just went for it. Even the audience was really into it, and was calling out their own requests for Neil to cover...the one who yelled out "Come on, let's go" must be a major Richie Valens fan :)
