The 34+ minute version of "Like A Hurricane" at the Paleo Festival, Nyon, Switzerland on July 23, 2013 takes places during a torrential thunderstorm... and the band plays on. And on. And on.
There are quite a few epic songs in Neil Young's vast catalog, as we noted previously in 2018 when the performance first debuted in Hearse Theater.

But what makes "Like A Hurricane" often especially spectacular when played is not what happens just on stage but all around it simultaneously. As we have seen over the years, the song's performance sometimes seems to literally alter the weather to create the ultimate alternate state of reality transporting the audience to far away dimensions.
Playing with Crazy Horse on the Alchemy tour in 2013, we were at a racetrack or soccer field in Nyon Switzerland. Part way through the show, Steve Drymalski, my tour manager, came out on stage and whispered “There is a hellacious storm coming here in a few minutes! We might have to pull the plug.” We decided to play ‘Like a Hurricane’ and see what happened. It lasted 33 minutes I think. Enjoy this one of a kind performance, ‘A Force of Nature’ from ‘Alchemy.’ At the end we started right into Rockin’ in the Free World!
The complete ‘ALCHEMY’ film will be coming to the Hearse Theater in 2021.
July 24th nearly 6 o clock in the morning..comin back home by car after a long ride 430km from western switzerland, all clothes , all is wet, wet as can be after all that....
First all of it started in a very good mood, nice weather and a beautiful organized paleo festival , it was my first time there and i was overwhelmed by the people there, all continents were there , african musicians, asian people, food and art and music from all over the world.
The concert of neil young and the horse began at night at 23.00 pm and it started with an epic long version of love and only love, got over to powderfinger with 3 solo parts after another, moved over to the psychedelic pill and a tremendous burning thundering walk like a giant over to hole in the sky and then the acoustic part began with heart of gold. After that song, neil was not comfortable with the hank williams D28 , was not in tune ...the new larry who looks like andy warhol had to come out and tune hanks guitar on stage while neil was standing there grinning.
At blowin in the wind it happened a lyrics mistake and at comes a time he had a wrong chord but didn't matter^^ then he started with singer without a song and no woman with a guitar bag was seen on stage the first time he played that xD but as he started playin that a cold wind came around the scene and thunderbolts and then it began slightly to rain...neil saw that and played it til the end , stood up from the piano and then the wind came mighty and blew his black hat from his head away! Neil was surprised , saw that rain also from the roof comin down on stage and the flashings at heaven . He ordered the organ to get it down on stage and they began like a hurricane to play!
The thunderstorm now was more and more heavy and like the monsoon at australia the storm blew us nearly away we got wet all around and neil and the horse played the strongest, most brutal but also melodic and most emotional hurricane ever heard at concert!!! he sang nearly 6 verses of hurricane he played solo 100 times over hurricane, at the end of the song he started again from the beginning and all culminates into an extended excessive sound and thunder , that was so incredible to the whole scene all around !
The audience was so great and cheered to the boys on stage tremendously so they played on and on. Neil saw the wet audience gave hurricane a thunder ending and moved immediately over to rockin in the free world and the water of the monsoon came rollin down from the hill behind me and right beside me so i stood in a lake!
We cheered the horse and held the line like soldiers at a kamikaze mission and neil and the horse appreciated that much that they came at the end of rockin to the front of the stage and bowed to us neil prayed to us, after they decided to break down the concert because of the incredible storm and too much rain . I thought while he played hurricane, now it is the right moment to die , have no fear, neil and the horse are staying with you, leading you the way to the nirvana, while the stage bursts and break down on me.
i couldn't imagine such a concert in my hardest dreams and it took place reality! It was a spiritual moment feeling the power of nature the storm and the energy the horse played and filled the earth altogether with that enormous power and thunder . That was really magic! After the concert broke down i try to get to my car walking through rivers that the rain caused and found my car and could get out of that mud , drove many hundred kilometres through thunderstorm through switzerland to germany back in the prairies where all was dry but all things i had were almost wet and i was still alive-
Very, very cool wolle! We've had the privledge of some epic LAH ourselves, but never the total 3D experience. Maybe someday...

"Stringman", sometimes called "The Danger Bird" -- AKA "The Dove from Above" -- the flying keyboard used during Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane" has been used for decades on monstrous jams with Crazy Horse.
The following research on the flying keyboard -- a 1974 Crumar Univox Stringman Synthesizer -- that comes down from the ceiling was provided by TW reader Doug.
I went to the Neil Young + Promise of the Real concert at Murat Theater at Old National Centre, Indianapolis, Indiana on - Sept 19, 2019..one of the best set lists of all the Neil shows I have seen (first was 1976 Stills-Young Band at Colt Park in Hartford CT).
As always, I noticed the keyboard hanging above and was happy to see it come down for Like a Hurricane (too many times I have seen it hang there all night and no Like a Hurricane). Since then, I've been wondering about the origin/history of the lowering keyboard and its design.
I discovered a 2013 (4/17/13) Rolling Stone interview with Poncho Sampedro. He was asked "Tell me about recording Like a Hurricane. Neil wrote in his book that you guys got it on the very first take". His reply:
"Well, that's true in one sense. We tried it with two guitars. I think one day we tried it once at the end of a session, another day we tried it all day with two guitars, and the third day we tried it with two guitars. It was just...He was upset with it. I sat down at the keyboard. He had an organ and I started playing it a little. He said "Well, let's try it like that." So we played it like that one time, and at the end of that tape, you can hear it, Neil goes, "Yeah, that's how it goes I think. That's it." "
And within the same interview, Poncho was asked "What was it like to play Like a Hurricane in a torrential downpour?" His reply:
"Oh, that was so crazy. It was raining off and on, kind of sprinkling all day there. Then we started playing Hurricane and a torrential downpour came. I mean, literally the organ stopped working it got so wet. I had to play guitar on that song for the first time in history. All that gear took a hit. It almost looked like hail was falling. I was drenched, and I couldn't move because I was attached to the organ. Those guys go to take a step back and everyone was quickly covering all the amps. The monitor console got totally soaked. A lot of things stopped working. It was crazy, but it's not the first time that happened during that song. It's amazing."
I wrote a note to NYA that was answered by Neil. He says:
It's a 'Stringman' analog synth, pretty rare these days. Mine are all delicate and I have spares. Love, N
Finally, I've attached a couple of Hurricane pictures from the Murat show in Indy.

VIDEO - "The Unforgettable Concert": HORDE Festival 1997 Highlights
Neil Young and Crazy Horse's setlist at the World Music Theatre in Tinley Park (Chicago), Illinois on the HORDE Festival tour on August 3rd, 1997 has been called "The Unforgettable Concert".
The video above is a MTV News segment by Music Correspondent Kurt Loder on the HORDE Festival in 1997 featured Neil Young, Beck, Primus, Toad the Wet Sprocket and many other bands. It is known as the "The Unforgettable Concert" because by the time Neil Young and Crazy Horse completed an all time tour de force performance of "Like A Hurricane", a hurricane like storm had just blown through the amphitheater, leaving the audience in the pit up to their knees in water. and the band plays on.
Neil Young and Crazy Horse
World Music Theatre in Tinley Park (Chicago), Illinois on the HORDE Festival tour on August 3rd, 1997
The 1997 HORDE festival started on July 11th at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA and finished at the Suwannee Music Park in Jacksonville, FL on August 23rd. Only a handful of artists played all 28 days of the festival; Toad was one of those artists. Their set tended to run about 40 minutes and were typically filled with their chart hits. The show chronicled on this overview was played at the World Music Theater in Chicago on August 3rd.
We always love to hear a great Neil Young concert story.
So here's a story that we recall from years ago that folks who were there say it was a most incredible memory. Last year, Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot wrote about "The concert I won't forget: The night Neil Young rocked like a hurricane":
Fans who attend rock concerts expect the performers to give their all. But they usually don’t expect them to defy death. So when the editors of the Tribune's Sunday magazine asked me to weigh in on my most surprising moment as a concertgoer, there really was only one choice.
On a muggy midsummer day in 1997, Neil Young and Crazy Horse took the stage at what was then known as the World Music Theatre in Tinley Park. They were part of the H.O.R.D.E. festival on what had so far been a pleasant if hardly transcendent day of music. But as the scruffy quartet took the stage, things got ugly.
A storm was blowing in, a nasty one. A roof covered the stage and part of the audience, but it offered little protection. Lightning creased the sky, thunder crashed, wind howled, and rain whipped sideways through the amphitheater, soaking everyone --- including the band. The Jolly Roger flag on Ralph Molina’s drum kit ripped in the wind, conjuring visions of a sinking galleon. Young and the band plowed ahead anyway, but then the lights, public address system and amplifiers gave out. The concrete aisles sloping toward the stage resembled white-water rapids as rainwater gushed through the pavilion. Panic was in the air. You could feel it, and hundreds of people started to sprint toward the parking lot. I was tempted to join them. I’d never really felt fear at a rock concert before --- until that moment.
It was foregone conclusion that the concert was over. It had to be. Any musician with a lick of sense would’ve been in his dressing room by now drinking a beer and toweling off --- a far better option than death by electrocution.

"Like A Hurricane" Neil Young & Crazy Horse Photo by GenevaLunch News
I just finished watching the video of Like a Hurricane and what really struck me was the feeling. The band, the audience, the moment. It was authentic, and you just can't fake authentic. It can only be achieved with talent, passion, and chemistry, and this performance had all three. It's becoming clear to me that Promise of the Real have talent and passion, but now it feels like the chemistry is kicking in big time. Not only are they listening, but now they're completely inside it. It feels like it's coming from the heart and not the head, and that is where Neil is always at when he's playing.
Chemistry is when music transcends technique and becomes emotion, and that's what I hear in this band. Neil Young has found kindred spirits in these young men, and it has energized him in a profound way. Two and a half to three hour shows happen when there is magic present, and that magic comes from chemistry within a band that lives inside the music it plays, and that is what I felt as I watched this performance.
For me, the number of different songs they play, or the set list is irrelevant. Music is all about that perfect feeling where time just slips away.
Thanks Dan! yes, the feeling comes through from thousands of miles away on a little YT video, indeed.

Bryan Ferry has been covering Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane" for decades.
Ferry is covering Young's "Hurricane" while out on his current tour. Here's a recent version at Theatre St-Denis in Montreal, Canada on April ~4, 2017.
A nice sax solo is featured in this version at about ~3:45.

A Neil Young Concert Memory: The Hurricane on the Hill
Everyone has their favorite Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert memories.
It's been said that Neil Young has the ability to influence the weather. Now whether that is true can be debated. But it is a fact that there have been some wild weather events while Neil has played "Like A Hurricane".
For example, the Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert at A Day On The Green, The Hill Winery, Geelong, Australia on March 16, 2013 (see above for a 90 second taste. Unfortunately some bad audio but the video is pretty crazy).
As a comment by Holly M. demonstrates, you just had to be there:
It was brilliant to see.
All night it was light on/off drizzling rain and nothing more. Immediately 'Hurricane' started the wild winds and torrential rain also started and continued through the whole song. When the song finished so did the wild weather. I was sitting about 10 rows from the front and was overwhelmed by the whole experience.
When the song and wild weather finished my mate turned to me and said 'That's the best special effects I've ever seen live'. Of course, he was definitely correct.
Neil Young with Crazy Horse - 4 shows is not enough but the last was unforgettable. Hurricane On The Hill at the Hill Winery in Geelong, VIC.
When they started Like A Hurricane I was so elated as I've never seen it live. But when the heavens opened and Poncho's organ was getting blown over the edge of the stage like a child's swing with torrential rain pouring down and Poncho giving up and then when the tarpaulin on the roof overflowed right onto Neil and the sheets of water came in they started to shut the song down. I was bitterly disappointed. Then what ? Neil saw all the equipment was still working, he shook off a lightning strike, eyed god squarely, and said "Go on I dare you, electrocute me it's your choice".
God chose to let Neil and Crazy Horse complete the song.I have never experienced anything drive so much emotional energy through my body.Stage, performers and equipment flooded. 66 year old guys should take more care !
