Neil Young's Missing Recordings | NYU
Back in May, we received a note from Jake Z. inquiring about whether there was a list of the songs that Neil Young has put on the Archives but were not released on CD.
Jake was asking because he would like to put together a playlist for his listening pleasure. So we shared back the invaluable research which long time rustie Robert Broadfoot -- who hails from Germany -- produced as a PDF document that Thrasher's Wheat has been honored to serve as host when we first published the most comprehensive listing of Neil Young’s unreleased material: The Unofficial Archive - Neil Young's Unreleased Songs.
So Jake cross referenced The Unofficial Archive - Neil Young's Unreleased Songs with the Neil Young Archives and produced the playlist located at PLAYLIST: Neil Young's Unreleased Songs on NYA.
Now back to Robert and an update on Neil Young's "Missing Recordings":
NEIL'S MISSING RECORDINGS
So exactly what recordings are there on the Archives – outtakes, demos, and other odds and sods – which have not already made it onto a Neil album? And what is actually “missing” on NYA? Which recordings exist on official releases but have not yet made it into the Archives? Many of course are just shorter single edits that are probably not essential to have on NYA. But there is a lot of other stuff which it would be great to see Neil adding some day.
I was a little confused too, so I have done a rewrite of my original “Missing” document to focus on exactly those questions. It comes to 52 pages in total (!) but I hope the hyperlinks will help you to find your way around.[DOWNLOAD DETAILS BELOW]
I hope you find it useful.
Please let me know of any errors or omissions. I am pretty sure there are quite a few but I have done my best! Already working on the next version!
Best

Michael1984 here - I bought the CD boxed set, even though he had promised a Blu-Ray physical release after the first volume of Archives. My question is "Why Does Neil Young Need Patrons" for his website for the Archives releases??? He's got my $$$ from the sale of the CD version, which following the Volume 1 Archives has NO VISUAL component. There;s footage of the 1976 Europe tour...So, I bought the physical product and he now wants my money to sign up? And if I had the $$$ I wouldn't care but I don't want to subscribe to a website. They change and evolve and they don't offer what coud have been easily made available on Blu-Ray.
NY soled off 50% of his publishing...how much more does he need to bleed the fans like me who just want a physical copy and not sign up for a website which will change over time??? Why does he think that people like me want to hear/see his music on a computer screen?
Please respond if you feel that same way, b/c I am pissed off that I am trying to support my favorite record store (which is out of business on 7/31) and I want his music in a physical release. The file cabinet f the box is a joke, why would anyone care about a poster of folders???? Why didn't he do a real book with the Archives 2 box. He released the 1st version as a limited edition of 3000...does he have a fucking clue who buys this stuff.
For instance: The BEatles released thier Mono LP box (initially) in a run of 10, 000. But when that sold out in a matter of hours, they saw what the public wanted. So they released THE SAME VERSION to all the people who couldn't get that initial release. NY re-releases Archives 2 but decides to short-change the punters who paid for the smaller box (I hated how big the original was....I still can't file it with my regular CD's/LP's) by giving them a stupid poster of a file cabinet, instead of making the booklet better.
Also, BTW there' 1 PHOTO OF CRAZY HORSE in their 1975 prime in this version od the box. It seems to me that NY thinks of them oas a backing band although, he always says "I'm just a member of Crazy Horse". Well on the Art Direction side, the full band I featured in 1 (ONE) photo as a band. Maybe there's more photos of the band, but not on my edition.
Write me back if you agree or if you feel I'm not a sychophant as so many are or if you agree. Either way, I want to see who just accepts what thier favorite artists do, or the people like me who call them out.
I'm all ears!
M1984
Dan, I appreciate your wit and participation. We have a lot to enjoy as Hard Core Neil Young fans. Ain’t it great!? Thanks to all who helped foster this!

Dear Michael1984 and TW readers,
And I thought I was the saddest fan for the lack of a NYA2 Blu ray. I got a Blu ray surround system just for NYA 1. Somehow I got over it. Maybe it’s the world burning up that’s got my priorities sorted. The glaciers are melting rapidly yet we still have our consumerist concerns. The low annual cost of NYA membership is eclipsed by the joy it delivers. This high res on-line source has made owning the physical product obselete? For a small price, a computer with speakers can deliver pretty good quality sound from the NYA on-line. There's a lot to look at, listen to, & enjoy on NYA. Movies, concert films, "new" live shows on the timeline(!) I chose to not buy the Return to Greendale box or the ATGR Reissue, or the CSNY 51st set.
I like being a member of NYA. And this stuff doesn’t just create itself. It takes money to develop the web site, roll out new releases, pay for massive IT. Neil earned the money by definition. If his Art wasn’t so bloody fascinating and enjoyable, I’d practically be a free man today! Neil Young's Art is like a Black Hole that has caught hold of us and it’s unrelenting pull continues to draw us in. What if it shreds us? What if we fall down a worm hole? It’s questions like these I ponder late at night.
The song Barefoot Floors alone is worth $20/year. Complain as we may that it wasn’t on NYA 1 or 2, it’s a revelation that this nugget of a song got squirreled away for all these years. Neil Young confounds his fans! That is part of why he is worthwhile to follow for several decades or more. I know I got my money's worth from Neil.
Ever just rock out to Rust Bucket and ask yourself how in the hell you made it through the last 30 years without that recording? Somehow we did, and now it is blowing my mind, delivered by a mythical guitar-slinging, Santa Claus-like Entity, Neil, during the times of covid. I personally favor it over Weld quite a bit. Some find it almost too intense (I hear Weld that way). I love the laid back feel and the upbeat power of it. What a great gig by Crazy Horse and member Neil!
There are problems with Rust Bucket. Why oh why could we not get the full recording of Cowgirl in high resolution?! Was somebody smoking really good weed?! What happened there?! Why couldn’t the boys do a perfect chorus background vocal every time?! Life ain’t perfect. Nothing is. Only nature, before man's greedy hand brought ruin.
Life is absurd sometimes. That is why I love The Big Lebowski, and the fold out archives file cabinet poster. I am impressed with it. Neil "OWNS" the virtual throwback digital file cabinet with audio in high res. I will slap that poster on the wall of my micro home some day and think of you, and smile. Just another 100,000 Miles away from the days that used to be. I can’t curse Neil for the way he delivered his Art. He has no slave / robot warehouse like Bezos. No fleet of delivery vehicles.
There is an African tribe that weaves gorgeous, intricate tapestries. In each work they weave a defect into it. As if to say, in man’s world, nothing is perfect.
I hope in some way to have eased your weary mind, friend. May your journey be unburdened. I’ve got to go log in now and listen to Barefoot Floors and look around for a new hidden nugget of ear candy that Uncle Neil has dropped into his domain.
I recently read an amusing piece here on the Epic TW that mentioned a Barenaked Ladies (Canadian) guitarist who visited Neil’s Broken Arrow ranch and described it as a Wizards Castle meets Rock and Roll Willy Wonka, or similar words. We are all enjoying the fruits of Neil's labor. I am SO GLAD he laid down tracks in all those places, like Broken Arrow Ranch. I’m so thankful our Hero hunkered down in the basement in Canada all those long lonely winter days and nights so long ago and “woodshedded” on his axe, learned all that technique, mastered it, obsessed on it. And then he delivered, for over 60 years. OMG! Thanks Neil! Long Live Neil Young! Alan in Seattle
50 reasons why Neil matters; at the beginning of Rock of Ages by Def Leppard , it says “ It’s better to burn out than fade away...”

@ Michael1984 : I appreciate your frustration and your passion, but unfortunately we are living during a unique period in time. The world is a completely different place than it was just fifteen years ago, due to the acceleration of technology, specifically for the delivery system of music. That system has gone through several different iterations during that time, and its had to keep up. Like Alan; I too bought a BluRay player specifically for Archives Volume One, and like you; I was disappointed that it wasn’t continued with Volume Two. Unfortunate as that may be, Neil has simply moved with the times. Let’s not forget that Neil was one of the only people fighting for High Resolution Sound Quality, when everyone else was content with crappy MP3’s. He never backed off, and now even the mega corporation Amazon has relented. Obviously Neil wasn’t the only person fighting for quality, but he was one of the giants who saved music from being devalued.
I grew up with physical media and still enjoy the tactile experience, but the world is being destroyed by an ever growing population. We are literally being consumed by our own waste, and if we don’t change we’re doomed. We have come to an impasse with our behavior on this wonderful planet, and something’s going to have to give. I’m guilty of hanging on to the idea of physical media, but I’m a dinosaur and will die soon. The future belongs to the young and the world is catering to them now. There is only one constant in life, and that is change. You either change with it or get left behind.
The reality of maintaining a website as complex as NYA makes it extremely expensive, so Neil requires a subscription fee to support it. The more you pay, the more access you get. That’s reality with most everything in our world. If you want a better sound system you spend more money, and if you want to eat healthier food, you have to spend more money. It’s just the way the world works. It shouldn’t be this way but these are the choices being made. So until we as a species decide otherwise, this is how it works. I know it’s a difficult pill to swallow, and frankly I wish the situation was different…. but it’s not.
You are certainly free to speak your mind here and share your frustration with what you feel is wrong, and there are many of us who feel the same, but reality is telling us to get with the program or get off at the next station. I wish you well.
Peace 🙏
@ Dan - thanks for on topic comment.! :)
and, btw, after spending hours pursuing 52 pages of history, please try and drop us an update.
we haven't managed to wade too deep as of yet.
likewise, anyone with summaries and comment on Robert's work, please drop us a line.
Also, as mentioned previously, if you are expecting a reply email, check your SPAM folder. Nearly all of our emails are marked as SPAM, unfortunately. Even after marking our mail as NOT SPAM, some mail services -- especially gmail -- continue to mark as SPAM.
also, we advise only to search on SPAM folders by sender. otherwise, you'll be exposing your mind to the most toxic subjects out there, which we highly do NOT recommend.
@ Michael1984 - well.
and we've been accused of launching diatribes?!
maybe this is just karmic payback or something? or maybe you're just trolling us all here w/ this harsh rhetoric?
that said, it seems some of our regulars here @ TW have addressed a few of your concerns.
We have seen this behavior before and called it out as false equivalences. so we won't bother again here.
but we'll say again, if you really have a major beef - and you really seem to -- then write a letter on NYA. Have you tried that yet b4 coming here to vent your frustrations?
as you should very well know, NY takes criticisms at face value and personally responds.
but only to those who don't cop some major attitude.
try writing something genuinely sincere from the heart.
you may just surprise yourself someday. pls report back here.
we're all ears!
@ Alan in Seattle & Dan - your responses and passion back to Michael1984 is most appreciated -- as always.
both your tone and logic are impeccable and admirable.
Peace to you both and all of our TW readers & supporters 🙏
Thanks Dan. Well spoken. And I say this in jest, (it may have not much to do with what you said), But if M1984 is like many of us, he cannot get off the bus! We have been kidnapped by a crafty shape shifter. The exits are hard to find, and frankly, quite unattractive. I want to stay on Neil’s magic bus until the last stop, baby! Not everyone is hooked. Dan, I agreed with everything you said. I need to downsize big time, and I have a large High Res music collection that changes my mind about it. Somehow I don’t need to buy EVERY NY release from here on out. I CAN enjoy it at NYA. The world is changing, and almost nobody is flying off in a space shop. Space is not habitable for the humans anyway. No one here gets out alive.
Like the themes associated with M1984’s name, some things are hard to transcend. Neil’s music would be a difficult thing to dismiss, for guys like us. I might as well turn celibate and devote my life to vanilla. It ain’t gonna happen. But we can all stay on the fan bus. It’s only our minds that must change (since everything else is already changing). Have I spun a confusing web while under the influence of coffee? Mission accomplished. Have a great day all you Neil Young fans! My what great taste in music you have! Alan in Seattle
(“… flying off in a space ship…”) - as in After the Gold Rush. Good luck to the Billionaires in their rockets.
I Want to Walk Like a Giant and fix our broken planet, break the fossil fuel suicide which inevitably follows man’s greed and stupidity. I so wish it were true what that vile moron said about “Global Warming is a Hoax.” Not so, not so. Too much time spent in the tent, with the strange Elephant of Enlightenment, indeed.
Thrasher! You make me smile. I was laughing out loud as I wrote my reply to Michael last night, amused at my own reaction to his words. Thank you for the kind feedback and staying in message. I veer off. I blame Neil Young (for giving me a reason to smile at it all!). 😂. Alan in Seattle
@ Thrashers : Thanks for the kind words….. It seems to have become the norm to substitute anger for reason these days, even though it defeats any chance of a productive dialogue. Another example of the effects of social media and its ability to divide and conquer. I’m not completely sure whether Michael1984 is here just to disparage, but I’m no expert on the subject, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.
@ Alan : You are certainly on a roll my friend. I completely agree with your thoughts and congratulate you on your positivity and passion. The remarkably esoteric genius of the NY ‘bus of many colors’ is always a joyful ride. One never really knows what pleasures await us up around the next bend, but it’s sure to stir up the pot, and move us in a different direction. Neil’s universe is a place of knowledge, wisdom, and musical adventure, filling in the spaces unavailable anywhere else on earth. We are blessed to be alive with him as he journeys through the future to amaze and baffle with a masters touch.
Peace 🙏
Geez, the guy made a complaint about how he's not a super fan of how Neil is doing things these days, and you basically say "the icebergs are melting, stop your complaining". Seems a bit harsh and hyperbolic to me.
I think it's still okay to be critical of something without getting a guilt trip about not caring about Mother Earth, or being called a dinosaur for not stepping in line with our modern times. The same "modern times" that blows chunks, btw.
I think the guy brings up some legitimate gripes, he shouldn't be treated like a scourge of society's woes because of it.
@ Richie C. - you're right, fair points.
yes, no disagreement that M1984 does have legitimate beefs which have been explored here and on NYA, in particular vinyl pricing.
we have to agree that some of these physical product pricing and marketing decisions make absolutely ZERO sense and seem to have no relation to supply and demand.
seriously, how does one explain how NYA#2 is a coveted black market/underground product.
yet we see the Deluxe Greendale box set now selling for less than what we paid mere months ago.
in NY's defense, no Elliot around. But even so, music business has changed so radically that no one really knows other than to take various guesses.
as for treating M1984 "like a scourge of society's woes", yeah, we can be harsh.
afterall, the fact that NY cashed out means he should just give it away? Maybe that wasn't what M1984 meant exactly, but kind of came across that way.
frankly, we just don't have time or patience for LA-LA land thinking.
and we do apologize from time to time.
so M1984, drop by again sometime. maybe calmly write a letter to NYA?
M1984 said, "NY soled off 50% of his publishing" No, Neil Young Souled off.... He spent countless hours developing his artistry to become the Godfather of Grunge, and a whole lot more. You couldn't fit the Blu ray box on your shelf? And it pisses you off? And now you're mad that the Blu ray is not for sale? Well, which is worse? Not being able to fit it in perfectly? Or not having NYA2 for sale on Blu ray? What if you can buy Neil Young Archives 2 Blu ray box after the pandemic subsides? What then? Buy the big box? Did you know that Neil Young's 1st Grammy went to a guy named Gary Burden, Neil's longtime album cover artist, who designed the Blu ray box? Later, Neil's 1st real grammy was for a song called Angry World.
Richie Cruz, nobody tried to hurt M1984's feelings. He called out for like-minded Neil Young-ian accolytes with gripes and only came up with several die hard fans of the man's Art. Neil can't run a business? At least he can write songs. And sing. And play. Acoustic. Electric. Shit, he hung out with Roy Orbison once and reminded him of all those great Roy Orbison songs he forgot. Van Gogh didn't do it better. He had to cut his ear off and die penniless.
Did it bug you that I brought up the Restless Consumer? Is it not more significant that future generations will be in a fight to survive? Monsanto has been spraying their poison on the food supply, propped up by faulty research, FDA compromise, and conformist brain-washing and one of the few public figures who stood up and called Bullshit is Neil Young. Thanks Neil! I have my framed Monsanto Years poster in on the wall. Thank you for trying to get the word out while the slumbering masses ignored the Real Science.
Nobody is getting picked on here at TW. But Thrasher has compassion, and some fans who will speak their Truth.
I am going to see Promise of the Real in November, first time without Neil being their front man. I hope to see Neil Young play live for the 19th time. Nothing is guaranteed. I am grateful I started paying attention in the late 1980's when I was a young Environmentalist. Thank you Thrasher for weathering random criticism and graciously remaining dedicated to the cause. Thrasher changed Neil Young's mind about the internet. That alone is quite an accomplishment. Alan in Seattle

I have to get involved in this, becuase I kind of indirectly started it off, and I hate to see people getting overheated!
Michael1984 is entitled - of course - to his opinion as long as he voices it respectfully, which maybe he didn’t quite. But when we respond, we should do so respectfully and objectively, exactly the way Neil always does. Trolling should have no place. Michael is also entitled to some feedback on his questions. So let’s focus on the facts not the emotions.
1. Neil never promised Blu-ray for Volume 2, nor did he promise any “visual component”. So Michael, you may be disappointed but you have not been misled. Blu-ray certainly has not realised its potential since the hype of the era when Vol. 1 came out, so Neil can be forgiven for not considering it essential. Having said that, it may come back with Vol. 3, but then you’ll have to grit your teeth and buy the big box even if it is too big for your bookshelf!
2. People clearly do indeed want to hear/see Neil’s music “on a computer screen”. It’s OK if you don’t, but there’s no point in trying to convince everybody else that they are wrong. I personally don’t really need Blu-ray but I’m not knocking you or anyone else who does.
3. Neil does not “need” Patrons, though maybe be needs Members. He invited people to support his online Archives project, but he is not obliging anyone to do anything, and is certainly not “bleeding” them. Perhaps you object to having to pay anything at all to see certain parts of the NYA site, but I think you will be pretty much alone on that. Whether Neil could personally afford to give us everything totally for free in perpetuity is totally irrelevant as long as what he does offer us is fair value for money, which it (almost always!) is.
4. Neil certainly wants us to support our local record stores and even publishes a list of them on NYA. OK, maybe he could do even more, but he frequently says he does not expect or even especially want us to buy from the NYA/Greedy Hand store.
5. Why doesn’t Neil do a real book with Vol. 2? Actually he did. And he also made it available (separately) to people who only bought the much cheaper CD version. So you can still just go and buy it.
6. You are perfectly right to be unhappy about the handling of the Vol. 2 Limited Edition release, Neil is too, but it appears you wanted the CD version anyway so that it will fit better on your shelf. If you want a better “booklet”, see #5. You can’t win ‘em all.
7. “1 photo of Crazy Horse” in the box? Maybe in the CD set, I don’t know. But the book has lots. Again see #5. I don’t think it’s fair to expect to get the book as well for the price of the cheaper CD set on its own. That’s why it’s cheaper.
8. Cool down. Neil loves you and wants you to be happy. Tell him if you aren’t. He’ll take your complaints seriously. There aren’t many rock stars who would.
@ Rasselss53 : Very well stated and succinct information. Thanks for your input here, and I hope Michael1985 has a chance to read it, digest it, and work through his issues with Neil. As you mentioned; a letter to Neil on NYA would be a great opportunity for him to see how open Neil is to criticism and suggestions. Real answers are only available there, and Neil is fearless in responding to anyone with a problem.
Peace 🙏
Well stated. Thanks. If this is a brawl, then we are a bunch of real gentlemen. Peace prevails on TW.
@ Rasselas53 - many, many thanks here for helping to diffuse the tension.
your reply is what one might hope for coming from the host of this blog.
but as we battle ongoing exhaustion over various themes that just keep recycling like a really bad movie, we are forced to take shortcuts.
certain folks know that when we encounter criticism containing words such as "sycophant" or "hypocrite", it really does become tiresome.
we think most of the regulars know that we didn't keep this going for 25 years if we were running a sycophantically hypocritical blog. this would have shutdown long ago.
totally get it that.
in fact, we are 100% anti-sycophantically hypocritical behavior. so there.
And the primary reason this blog continues to flourish is b/c folks recognize now that the MSM is oozing the slime of sycophantically hypocritical whores. the classics have been the recent busts of "politicians" & "journalists" parading around on camera doing hygiene theater then ripping off their masks as soon as they think the cameras stop rolling.
but we know that the cameras and recordings never stop.
we have it all. everything.
and they are freakin' scared.
it is game over.
totally
I’d like to think that the Good Guys win in the End. That remains to be seen. In this fight, there is no scoreboard. Earth as host to human, plant, & animal is under challenge as never before during the 6 prior extinction events. Levels of CO2 have risen at unprecedented speed. It may not seem to be an Emergency to many people, perhaps especially to “Republicans” but rest assured: It IS. If the Democrats cared much about solving the problem, they would not be allowing various Tar Sands oil pipelines from Canada to operate in our country, moving the most polluting form of Oil to the Gulf, to be shipped overseas for refinement. It is utter insanity to allow this Reckless and Dangerous plunder to be tapped for energy consumption.
We Neil Young-ians enjoy the Underdog Fight that is required for us to stand up as the Children of Destiny. But these are desperate times. Mother Earth has withstood nearly as much as she can take, at least in terms of maintaining populations of humans, flora, and fauna are concerned. Earth will continue on.
What is living here other than cockroaches is hard to know. Species are going extinct at a rapid pace as Bill Gates helps the world spray his Roundup on the crops. I say “his” because he has been pushing Roundup for many years and requiring 3rd world countries to use it in their farming if they are to “benefit” from the “Helping Hand of the Gates Foundation.
Bill Gates also owns a majority of farmland in the US at this present moment. Is he a Sociopath? Is he a large scale serial killer? (Cereal killer… this food contains Roundup). He has a seed bank vault for the Fat Cats hidden away from the world. Meanwhile he is actively destroying the ability of plants to create seeds as they always had in Nature. He is not trying to feed the world. He is trying to have control over the food supply, and / or to eliminate ate the food supply. What a Big Helper he is. And people think he’s a Hero.
I marched against Monsanto for years. Only recently has the media of the world started addressing the massive scientific fraud that claimed Roundup was not carcinogenic. The tide is turning. Unfortunately it is already in everyone’s bodies. It is prevalent in the entire food supply, in huge quantities. Alan in Seattle
@ Alan in Seattle - as always, we love your passion.
regarding the politics, 2 sides of the same coin.
regarding the Monsanto/GMO business, this is why we so passionately support Willie & Farm Aid.

Thank you Thrasher! One we go down the rabbit hole, it’s hard to unsee that stuff. The DNC rigging their own Primary in 2016 against Bernie, pushing the unpopular Hillary…. Gave us Trump. To read the DNC emails is nauseating. And Assange is stuck in Balmarsh prison for revealing the Truth. Hillary wanted to take him out with a drone in the Ecuador Embassy. Yay for “Democracy.”
