NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES TIMELINE CONCERT OF THE MOMENT: w/ Crazy Horse at Bonnaroo Festival, TN - June 15, 2003

A new Timeline Concert of the Moment is now streaming on Neil Young Archives.  (Thanks the Road Dawg!)

The latest Timeline Concert is Neil Young and Crazy Horse at Bonnaroo Festival, TN on June 15, 2003.

Bonnaroo Journal from Knoxville News: "Neil Young and Crazy Horse hit the stage at 9:42 p.m. and opened with a 18 minute version of "Love to Burn." Crazy Horse - guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, drummer Ralph Molina and Bassist Billy Talbot created a beautiful explosion of sound."

The New York Times said:

"Despite the revolving jam sessions, this was a crowd with a long attention span, and the festival's best stretches were when bands just held their own for long chunks of time. Neil Young, on Friday, performed with his three-decade-old band, Crazy Horse, under a custardy full moon. For three hours he played expanded versions, some of them 29 minutes long, of his best songs"Love to Burn," "Cortez the Killer," "Cinnamon Girl" and others. He was the only soloist, breaking to solo at length several times per song. Playing in his ragged, stuttering phrases, he made strings of notes crumble into noise, then recohere toward graceful endings. (The festival's excellent concert sound made his guitar tone feel a mile thick.) It was extraordinary, the ideal of a gnarled yet sophisticated technique."

Neil Young Patron ZOOM Call Update: Archives Volume 4 Release + More

Neil Young on Patron ZOOM - July 8, 2026
image via Rusted Moon

Here is an update from Neil Young's Patron call earlier today. Many thanks to everyone for reports via TW comments.

by Robert Broadfoot

Asked about a release of the LWW remix currently rolled out on NYA the man himself during a video call for patrons declined any intention to go beyond the NYA and release a tangible version.

Questions by the patrons included "Canary", "Homefires", "Electric Judy", also recordings of the 1993 European Tour with Booker T. & the MGs were mentioned. Neil Young described how he ended up with songs on his new album that originated in the 60's.

There were a lot of prominent grains, rusties and zumans online who are more apt to summarize what had been said than me, so who's gonna stand up?
Developing ... check back.

Neil Young Archives Volume 4 is "almost completed": What Will It Contain?

Earlier this week, the good folks over at Neil Young Archives made note on the front page of Times-Contrarian of the 30th anniversary of Thrasher's Wheat.

And if that wasn't enough, over on Rusted Moon, TW news made the  Quote of the week: Update on NYA Vol. 4. (Thanks Ralf!)

via Times-Contrarian | Neil Young Archives

In 2024, Neil Young announced that he has "begun assembly" of NYA Volume #4 by The Volume Dealers. Per announcement, "Original performances" will be the basis for cut selection. The Bluenotes "10 Men Working" will be an unheard original song on V#4.  Volume #4 will be the "second last" of the series. Back in 2022, Neil had talked of Volume #4 as being the final volume.

Earlier this year, we posted on the question of what will Neil Young Archives Vol. 4 contain with an article from Neil Young Unreleased - NYU by Robert Broadfoot.

Neil Young Archives Migration from Amazon to DigitalOcean Platform Completed

Neil Young @ Farm Aid 40
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota - Sept. 20, 2025
(Click photo to enlarge)

Neil Young has announced that his Archives (NYA) have completed platform migration from Amazon to DigitalOcean per a statement.

In 2025, Neil Young announced that he would withdraw his music from Amazon due to big corporations "selling out America", as well as, Jeff Bezos' support of the Trump administration.  In January, a statement on Neil Young Archives, called for a boycott of Amazon.

The now-completed migration was considered technically demanding and costly internally. The migration team was led by archivist Phil Baker, together with DigitalOcean's engineers, who developed a new infrastructure for cloud storage, databases, and servers. As part of the move, the entire streaming workflow was also modernized to improve performance and scalability. A key component of the new architecture is a "hot storage" layer. This temporarily caches frequently requested audio content. Frequently streamed tracks can thus be delivered more quickly without constantly accessing long-term storage. For platform members, this translates to shorter loading times, more stable streams, and fewer interruptions during peak usage.

By making the migration away from Amazon to DigitalOcean's platform, Neil Young believes that the switch is part of a larger movement away from the dominance of a few technology companies and toward independent digital services and stronger local structures.

Full statement on Neil Young Archives (NYA).

Here is an update from Neil Young's Patron call earlier today. Many thanks to Greying Rider for his excellent reports via TW comments.

Hello Everybody,

Notes from the Patron call:

--------

Neil looks fantastic.

Says it’s the largest group of Patrons ever. May offend some people and get that number down!

Phil Baker reads questions. Zeke, Frank Gironda and John O are also not he call.

Will Neil play in USA in 2026?

Some possibilities. Focused on making new album because he’s got new songs.

New outtakes in the works?

Yes in the work all the time. Neil calls himself a giant outtake. Working on them all the time.
There will a list on the NYA music page with all the outakes and links to find them.

Does he have any ideas to mobilize and galvanize the collective musicians to stand against the Trump?

No ideas. Every American should use their conscience to stand up for beliefs and not be intimidated.

Are there plans for another benefit show in 2026?

Probably.

Neil are you writing new songs?

6 news songs right now.

Please tell us about your new songs.

Reads a verse of a new song. Sound like decent lyrics.

What does he think of the atmos mixes?

Go to Apple for these. Neil likes the original mixes and what he did in the first place. What the Archives are about. Niko’s atmos mixes are great and Vol 4 is full of them.

Asked to say a few words about Judy Greenberg

Neil says she was a wonderful person and a great supporter of his music. Life is sometimes a rough ride but she had to go. Zeke chips in to say she was the first subscriber. Neil says she was a one in a million. She loved music and will always be around.

Archives Volume 4 release date?

No release date. But there is a lot more information and then he (quickly!) reels off a list. [This is what I got. Please add anything I missed or got wrong in the comments.]

  • ’87 Crazy Horse with Blue Notes
  • Freedom sessions’
  • Raggedly Glorious (3 sessions)
  • Deep in the Valley of Hearts. New album
  • Natural Beauty
  • Philadelphia
  • Booker T & MGs
  • Sleeps with Angels film with Briggs
  • Mirrorball film
  • Year of the Horse with cool version of Sedan Delivery
  • Amazing Trocadero from ’97 with CH
  • 97-99 Silver and Gold
  • Catalyst
  • Ocean Way
  • Live album from the WiIltern (Joh Hanlon not listed to yet).
  • Greendale. Return and Vicar Street. Vicar street video

Ever recoded a song singing a song in another language?

Not that I know of.

How is Canary getting on?

Last 50 pages. Final edits. Getting ready to do art (watercolor painting). End of this year. Maybe 2027. Working on it since 2017. Sci fi. Quite a story.

What in pipeline that most excited about?

All the same to Neil. Like the new songs. One called ”The Second Song”. Woke up with the melody in his head. Thinks must have existed already and so wrote new lyrics to it.

Any chance we will get a Neil Young biopic film?

Says he hopes not! Does not know how you can do that while still alive. Got some people he knows working on something but does not want to get involved. Wants to make a record.

Will independent venues make a recovery like vinyl?

Has a go at Amazon.

How is the train set?

Fantastic. One of his greatest endeavors. Art of creating things form real things.

How determine set lists for every show to show?

He does it by feel. Write down the setlist before the show and then deviate from it.

Zeke mentions that Chrome Hearts can play anything he pulls out of the hat.

Question about if he will organize a show to mobilize musicians.

Neil’s not going to organize, he follows the muse. Other people can do this better.

How does it feel to be 80?

Feels good. Thought he’d be scared until he was 80. What the heck? Who cares? A lot of things don’t matter that used to matter. Likes to stay physical. Walked 3 miles at 8,500 feet yesterday in his new shoes to not slide around on the ice.

How are Ralph and Billy?

Happy, healthy and well. Poncho too. Spoke to him last week. Played them the Trocadero disc. They loved the ‘new’ old stuff.

Trocadero has 7/8 songs that Neil hardly ever played with CH: Razor Love, Big Time.

How decide if play a song acoustic or electric?

Depends on how he feels. Some more fun acoustic and some electric. Admits not a good answer, he just makes things up on the go.

How has the Greenland free access gone?

Reaction has been good.

How feel about old classic songs?

If tired of it, then don’t play it. No rules. It’s like the wind, just comes and goes. Bob doesn’t plan what he plays. He plays what he feels like playing. Follows the muse to play how he wants, even if not recognizable.

What’s on the new live album?

First song to be released is Silver Eagle. And then Big Crime. Incredible version of Cortez from Bergen. Best version ever in his opinion because it came out different when he sang it. Stopped each verse a line early and let the verses sync into a big hodge podge. Tells a whole story from a new view.

Status of Tape Sessions log from Volume 3?

John says on his desk. Got a list last week.

When is Coastal coming to NYA?

Frank Girona says its on the way but Neil jokes that business gets crossed with art.

Law suit x Chrome Hearts?

Frank says worked out an arrangement but can’t comment otherwise. Neil will continue using the name.

Spoken to Stephen recently?

Yes, spoke last week. Keeps in touch with these guys.

-----------

That's all I got. It's good to share.

Peace. Toby

Now that the Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts' Love Earth Concert Tour Leg #1 has concluded in Europe, it's a good time to look back as we look forward to Leg #2 in North America.

 (Click photo to enlarge)

Via Sugar Mountain,  we can see that the recently completed Europe Leg #1 of Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts' Love Earth tour drew relatively deeply from the albums After The Gold Rush, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Harvest and Ragged Glory with 3 songs each.

Interestingly, the setlists varied with 27 songs drawn from across 16 different albums ranging from 1969's  Crazy Horse's Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere to CSNY's Looking Forward.

The core setlist songs played at each of the 13 Europe tour concerts were: Be The Rain, Cinnamon Girl, F*!#in', Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black), The Needle And The Damage Done, Harvest Moon, Sun Green, & Name Of Love.

The concerts with the most songs played was July 7 - Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland and July 11 - Hyde Park, London, England  with a total of 18 songs.  The concert with the fewest songs played was  June 26th - Dublin, Ireland - Malahaide Castle with a total of only 14 songs.

There were zero concert performance debuts or unreleased song performances, unlike NEIL YOUNG 2023 COASTAL TOUR. And -- surprisingly --  no songs played from the newest album Talkin' To The Trees.

Neil Young Answers The Question: "What is a Thrasher?"

THRASHER
via Neil Young Archives | T-C | LTE
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Now that the 1st Leg of Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts' 2025 love earth WORLD Tour is complete, Neil is back to answering letters on NYA.

In particular, Neil answers the immortal question: "What is a Thrasher?" (thanks Road Dawg!)

And more importantly, Neil promises to add the song Thrasher to the setlists for the  upcoming North American Leg #2.  Obviously, the song resonates deeply with the proprietors of this blog.

Which reminds of the time that The NYA Team announced a major discovery back in 2019 of the original lyrics for Neil Young's song "Thrasher".

Original "Thrasher" Lyrics

Apparently, the original "Thrasher" lyrics were "hiding behind hay bales"?!

(More on the nine page original lyric manuscripts for Neil Young's epic, immortal and legendary song "Thrasher" which reveal several telling lyric changes made during the evolution from writing to 1st performance. )

A Question on Neil Young's Product "Quality"

Neil Young's COASTAL film soundtrack
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Discussions of the COASTAL soundtrack have raised questions on Neil Young's product "quality".

As background,  Neil Young's COASTAL film soundtrack vinyl & CD product have been withdrawn from sale on Greedy Hand due to errors in the album’s production and mastering process. In addition, after a series of glitches, the soundtrack is now streaming on NYA.

A comment by Old Black on a message received when ordering  COASTAL soundtrack:
"I regret to inform you that Neil Young has discovered an audio glitch on the cd and has therefore requested that we put an immediate halt to all shipments, and also issue an immediate recall on any stock that remains at retail."
The latest episode comes after various past struggles with quality, such as the Rust Bucket DVD issue or  BBC 1971 DVD reissue,  But as The Flying Scotzman points out, is this really production and mastering issues or simply poor quality control allowing bad product to go to production?

Other fans have in turn pointed out that’s unfair, as not all these issues are equal. Why? Because while most were errors in quality control, others were deliberate creative decisions.

The Rust Bucket dvd re-think, for example, was a separate issue to some of the recent QC issues. The mix was not a mistake, as such, but an intended effect by Neil — and one with good thinking behind it.

(To clarify, the first Rust Bucket dvd featured an remastered version of John Hanlon’s flagship master mix for the CD version. The fairly aggressive remaster for the dvd involved John’s mix being made narrower, louder, and given a treble and bass boost. This was an attempt, perhaps only partially successful, to more thrillingly simulate the excitement of the authentic live sound. The second edition dvd restored John’s unedited mix.)

But despite being an intentional production choice, the first Rust Bucket does in hindsight feel like a pivotal project — a turning point of sorts:

It was around this time Niko Bolas took over from John Hanlon. (This is perhaps relevant, or perhaps merely coincidence. Niko has certainly done great work with Neil before, even if his preference for drums over guitars is perhaps less suited to Neil’s electric work than Briggs’ and Hanlon’s guitar-centric approach.)

As Scotsman concludes: "And is it asking too much to expect Neil’s record company to play a role in actually checking the product works as intended (and meets even a minimal-viable standard of quality) before putting it on sale?". No, not at all.

Neil Young: Coastal
Directed by Daryl Hannah

Quality issues aside, the concert film COASTAL was a joy to experience in theaters with friends and new acquaintances. So one can only hope this all resolves swiftly so that the wonderful soundtrack can be properly experienced and enjoyed.

Lastly, we can only add that Neil Young's product quantity has been staggering over the recent years.  Definitely not an excuse, but it's not surprising when one declares "open the vaults" that there are faults.

To quote Neil himself: "Quality: Whether You Want It or Not".

Film Review of the Moment: Neil Young: Coastal

Neil Young: Coastal
Directed by Daryl Hannah
 (Click photo to enlarge)

The Neil Young film Coastal, directed by Daryl Hannah, held screenings last week and was warmly welcomed.

Waves of Sadness.

I don't know why. From the start. Not constant, but some quite extreme.

I was surprised to see the theater about 2/3's full, here in Burbank. That was nice. A nice geriatric audience, and I was one of them, now, a long time gone from the Tonight's the Night shows, which were my first. When I went to Mountaintop, there were only about 10 in the theater at the Landmark Nuart on Santa Monica in West LA.

The theaters seem to play every movie at deafening sound levels these days, but this was quite subdued, and could have used a boost. It was a lot of concert footage, and it deserved more realistic concert venue volume, at least for the music. I could hear nearby concession wrappers rustling even during the music. (I ran into the 16-plex manager on the way out, and asked about the volume choice, and she said the volume is pre-set by the film distributors for airing, so Shakey Pictures' choice?)

Maybe it was the black and white, too, that contributed to the sadness feeling. But the movie was in the bus, out and directly to soundcheck or the start of the performance at a few venues, some concert segments from the few different venues, then immediately back to the bus, and driving again, and talking with the bus driver. Repeat. The movie seemed just as much conversation with the bus driver as was anything else. Very laid back. Nice Neil dry humor, throughout. And I enjoyed the film, don't get me wrong, but I missed the bits of real joy.

During Mountaintop, with Crazy Horse, there was so much emotion, and much of it anger and frustration, some so intense that I was surprised they were letting us see it. But when it gelled, finally, and that scene of them listening to the play back and Neil lit up with that massive joy and happiness, and a 500 watt smile...... I missed seeing joy like that in Coastal. Neil seemed so isolated from the rest of the world. His special pocket of isolation. On the bus and off the bus. on the bus, off the bus. Looking out the bus window. Escorted every step. Maybe the aging ("I don't recognise myself"), the pace for the solo shows.......

Mostly I was enveloped with sadness for most of the documentary. I don't really know why. I loved the few bits of Micah animation. I would have just as soon seen Coastal at home, with my own control of the sound system for the music parts. Like the last decades' releases, I enjoy them and keep up with a favorite artist that has been a large part of my personal soundtrack since 1970, but don't really know what to make of the sadness that this film bathed me in. Neil already did so much that was so very special to me, and so many. He already did that. I don't mind that the most special songs he will do have already been done. My life was enriched by them as they happened. Now, I love to check in, and see what he is doing, even if it brings me sadness, for whatever reason. Neil playing "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" on the bus might have been my personal favorite part.

That is some bus.

Thanks so much for the review Aer!  Great to hear from you.

Know what you mean about the sadness and subduedness. The film was definitely for Neil fans.  A very intimate exploration of the solo side of Neil. Mainly, rare songs performed live that most are unfamiliar with. Prime of Life, for example. So sublime. Sub-title could have been "Secrets of a Tour Bus Driver".

Also, good points on MountaintopCoastal is like the antithesis of  Mountaintop.  All of the crew tension and technical stress of Mountaintop is offset in Coastal by the whole mellow vibe and camaraderie of the artist and his fellow travelers. Its almost like Daryl wanted Coastal to be the opposite film of Mountaintop.

Coastal and Mountaintop will be a great double feature someday.

The theater was more than half full at the American Film Institute (AFI) Screen #2 and ended with applause.  Many stayed afterwards hanging out and chatting about film.
