As we reported here back in March, (see  "RUST BUCKET" DVD Audio Issues: Neil Young Owns It and Steps Up) Neil Young is stepping up on the issue regarding the DVD audio on ‘Way Down in the Rust Bucket’.

As background, a TW reader commented back in February on the audio concerns on the DVD versus the CD, LP or hi-res files. The TW commenter -- Mr. Harm -- then followed up directly with NYA with a Letter to Editor to which Neil Young personally responds.

Neil Young's response is noteworthy in its transparency, honesty, accountability, and integrity. 

Shortly thereafter the discovery of flaws, came word on Members Page | T-C | NYA that replacement DVDs are shipping to everyone who ordered either the stand-alone DVD or the Deluxe Box Sets from the Greedy Hand Store, as well as to those who purchased the Deluxe Box sets from other retailers and signed up for the replacement DVDs. 

Now, according to NYA Members Page, the replacement DVDs are shipping this week.  All of these DVDs will ship from U.S. warehouse to  worldwide customers.

A Message From Neil Young: RISING WITH THE MOON

 

On Monday, we reported on Neil Young's Latest New Album Recording w/ Crazy Horse.

And the Neil news gets even better -- if that's even possible --  given "The Streak" he's been on over past 16 months or so.

Today Neil informs on A Message From Neil: RISING WITH THE MOON | T-C | NYA| that The Horse is  "definitely kickin’. Billy Ralph, Nils and I are enjoying these sessions. It’s been so long without" while in The Barn.

Neil writes:

The music lives. We have recorded nine new songs. Some are already to mix or add chorus vocals to, as we love to do. That is probably next. The moon is full. We are about to turn to mixing and post production of these songs. A few linger, saying they could be better played, but we have not listened back to anything. Listening opens the door to post-production and we are still rising with the moon. It’s too soon. Today we will play again.

Other details:

One song, ‘Welcome Back’, was played last night at sunset, with alpen glow bathing the barn. It is magic. Alpen glow is Daryl’s favorite time. One other song was recorded in Canada solo, but we still did it again and we will listen and decide which one makes the album. ‘Song of the Seasons’ is its name. Of the other seven new songs, today we will feel out which ones to play again. We talk it over, go with the songs that we know we felt heavily while they were going down. We have to review those. That means listening. Listening impacts your feelings for the song when you next play it, so we have to be careful what we listen to. But not quite yet. No listening yet. While the rising continues, we will feel out what we are about to do. We will know when to stop and listen.

I saw Elliot yesterday in the room with us, as clear as light. That was a great sign.

Neil goes on to highlight each crew member by name, their role and a personal thanks.

Again, quite reassuring and gratifying news and somewhat  of a relief for many. to hear that these 2020 themes will have a soundtrack by Neil & The Horse. 

But in the meantime -- as a reminder -- in March, we reported that Neil Young found that the pandemic brought "The focus, a gift". The focus was the gift, which has brought us an "avalanche of an embarrassment of riches" -- or as we characterized previously -- Expecting to Calculate Neil Young 2021: Numbers Add Up To Nothin' ... or "A Rusties Holy Grail".

Well, yes, as we discussed throughout 2020 everybody knows "Live Music Is Better", of course.

And again in our  Yes, Everybody Knows "Live Music Is Better" - Spring  2021 Edition. So we bring you today our Summer 2021 Edition of Everybody Knows "Live Music Is Better".

Last night we got together with a bunch of old buddies to catch Night #2 of the sold out Richard Thompson concert at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia.

 

Our buddy Alex "The DJ" -- who has seen Richard Thompson countless times over the decades  said that  RT's voice and guitar have never sounded better. Over 2 hours set with no break,  no intermission. Folks at both nights said last night was the  better. RT played lots of new stuff and lots of standards, like "Turning of the Tide" and "Vincent", of course. He took requests for obscurities and tried to play. Lots of crowd energy which he very appreciated. "Keep Your Distance" brought the house down.  No one was keeping their distance though. Much pent up joy released last night as we hugged all on our way out the door into a warm summer evening under a near full moon.

 

Let the music flow across all the lands in the summer of 2021!!

After all, isn't all about the "Ordinary People of RUST"?

"Crazy Horse recording is under way. The Horse is back in the barn now, shaking off the rust,"  says Neil Young on his archive page.

Neil continues:

"We are so happy to be back in the barn, a barn built to replace the 1850s barn that had collapsed in exactly the same place, high in the mountains of Colorado! It’s an exact replica of the original, built with Ponderosa pines by Ted Moews and his great crew of artisans. It is magic inside."

Mark Humphries is handling monitors and -- in a big surprise -- Technician legend Larry Cragg "The Welder",  is handling the guitars and amplifiers again.

Thematically, a post-pandemic album seems to be on the horizon.  

Says Neil Young: 

"These are new times, with new songs and feelings after what our world has been through and continues to face.

This music we are making for our souls. It’s like fresh water on a desert. Life is going on."

Last year, we observed Father's Day by pointing out the semi-interesting fact that Bob Dylan and Neil Young released new albums.

Although some have serious reservations, the song "Old Man" is -- ostensibly -- about a ranch hand at what would become known as "Broken Arrow".

Another possibility is that the song "Old Man" is really about Neil's own father, Scott Young being the real "old man" behind the song.

So with Father's Day at hand ... from a not so young man to our old man...

From his 1972 album Harvest, "Old Man" is definitely one of Mr Young's most enduring songs of all time with brilliant banjo and steel guitar. James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt provide backing vocals.

The song was inspired by the caretaker of the Northern California Broken Arrow Ranch -- with over 1,000+ acres of prime land with views of both San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean -- which Young purchased for $350,000 in 1970 when he was just 25 years old young.

The song has themes of loneliness and lost love: "Live alone in a paradise that makes me think of two" recalled with a certain pain "love lost/such a cost/give me things that don't get lost."

Yet Neil searches on for that oh-so elusive heart of gold:

"I need someone to love me the whole day through
Oh one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true."

In the film "Heart of Gold", Young introduces the song as follows:

About that time when I wrote (Heart of Gold), and I was touring, I had also -- just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time -- I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today.

And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avala and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, 'Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?'

And I said, 'Well, just lucky, Louie, just real lucky.' And he said, 'Well, that's the darndest thing I ever heard.'

And I wrote this song for him.

As we noted earlier this year, photographer Henry Diltz has taken many iconic photos of Neil Young, as well as, many other legendary musicians over the decades.

From Henry Diltz' blog on Morrison Hotel Gallery, here is the story about spending a day at Broken Arrow Ranch with Neil Young and the "Old Man".

"Old man look at my life..."

"Neil Young bought a ranch in Northern California which he named "Broken Arrow Ranch". I went up there a few times with Gary Burden in 1971 and stayed a couple days taking pictures. Gary was my art director/ partner and still works with Neil. We used to walk around the ranch in the morning, smoking a fatty and checking things out around the property.

The Ranch came with a foreman named Louis Avila who had been there for years. This particular morning we stopped by the foreman's bungalow and he and Neil had a talk on the porch. This was in 1971, a year before his album Harvest came out and as the story goes, this is the "Old Man" that Neil sings about.

We later went on to look in a barn where Neil had some guitars. He pulled out a little old Martin guitar, sat on a hay bale, and played a tune. How great it was to be a fly on the wall and document everything that happened. Lots of those pictures got used in Neil Young Songbooks in the 70's."

We first published these original words by Rev. Martin Niemoller here on Thrasher's Wheat on September 27, 2011 -- about a decade ago. And we insert the profound words of Rev. Martin Niemoller into our postings from time to time. 

And it's been over 75 years since the quote originated during a very dark time in history.  A history that we repeat again, where many remain silent and afraid to speak their truths.

So how much longer will this continue all of you communists, jews, trade unionists, and catholics out there? [NOTE: Before going insane here, those are the exact groups originally cited by Rev. Niemoller in 1945.]  

Again, how's that identity politics thing working out for you these days, eh?

Because, remember, like Rev. Niemoller, we will NEVER forget those who stood with us and those who did not. Trust us.

Because, "The role of the artist is to make [r]evolution irresistible."
