Neil Young's Dynamite Tracks #18: Busting out of Jail

From the irrepressible Scotsman on Dynamite Tracks #18: Busting out of Jail:

Bob Dylan said:

“Hearing Elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail.”

Bob’s words ring true. And whether the jail-break is instigated by Elvis Presley or Bob himself, busting out of jail is one of my favourite themes for music... and art in general.

Some music is about wallowing in despair, a comfort food of sorts. I prefer tracks that provoke positive action.

Sun Green is the classic, probably definitive Neil Young song about busting out of jail. A dynamite track not just in its performance, but in its very conception.

On one level, Greendale as a whole is basically the “guidebook to Neil Young”: and Sun Green is the bit where everything reaches boiling point. Obstacles within are demolished, and the spirit reaches its potential. A journey to freedom.

On a more down-to-Earth level, Greendale is about a bunch of very normal people—and a few abnormal ones—living their lives. And because Neil created them all, he’s in all of them.

He’s the curmudgeonly, world-wise Grandpa, but he’s also the ever-youthful Sun Green.

Remember how in the Wizard of Oz the real characters from Dorothy’s life on the farm appear in Oz, but they’re not quite the same? Parallel, but not identical? Greendale is like that:

In the character of Jed, we see an echo of Danny Whitten. And the track Carmichael tells a vivid story of a grief and mourning that is essentially the 2003 version of Tonight’s the Night.

…not identical, but parallel.

Greendale is not a political album, thank God… nor is it an environmental one. (The excellent final song kicks open the door to an environmental avenue).

It’s an album about living. And of course, there’s a lot of death in it, too. Death adds tension to Greendale, inspiring the survivors to live their lives more fully.

Remember, Remember the 5th of November: VOTE - Freedom vs Tyranny

"I'm Happy To Report In. Vote Your Conscience."
Neil Young in 2020

Obviously, -- at least so we would like to think -- everyone votes their "Conscience", as Neil Young urged in 2020.

That is voting their conscience for "Freedom" and voting against "Tyranny".

Or, maybe not ... a terrifying realization. Or,  even worse -- those who think they  are voting for "Freedom" but -- in reality -  they're mistakenly actually voting for "Tyranny".  Quite a state of affairs, eh?

As usual, Neil Young has quite a bit to say about Presidents and politics.

Who's Going To Stand Up and Save The Earth?

Many of us were introduced to Mr. Young back in 1970 with the song "Ohio" and the lyrics:

"Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio."

ohio-single-bill-of-rights

Richard Nixon: "Campaigner"
"I am a lonely visitor
I came too late to cause a stir
Though I campaigned all my life towards that goal
I hardly slept the night you wept
Our secret's safe and still well kept
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul
Even Richard Nixon has got Soul"

And Mr Young has not slowed down on the subject of Presidential politics since 1970.

Ronald Reagan

In the 1980's, there were the infamous "Reagan interviews" where -- depending on one's perspective -- either Neil Young was a Ronald Reagan supporter, detractor or undetermined.

From Boston Globe's 1990 Neil Young interview:

Young's been in hot water with certain elements of the press for what's been perceived as his support of Ronald Reagan. Imagine, Neil Young -- the man who wrote that wonderful antiwar, anti-Nixon anthem "Ohio," a longterm environmentalist and activist . . . supporting the most right-wing of presidents.

The neo-Reaganite tag affixed to him during the mid-'80s, Young insists -- quite vehemently -- was taken out of context, blown out of proportion. ''The Reagan-supporting era," sighs Young. "I don't think there is one president that's come down the line that hasn't done something good somewhere." Young says a "sleazeball journalist" nailed Reagan and then forced Young to his defense.

"Some people put down all presidents no matter what," says Young, "like once you get to be president you're a . . . idiot. So if you say anything good about any of them, they think you're supporting everything they do."

Freedom (1989) by Neil Young -
"The rock and roll coda of the Cold War"

In the late 1980's, Neil Young penned the song "Rockin' In The Free World"  lyrics:

"We got a thousand points of light
    For the homeless man
    We got a kinder, gentler,
    Machine gun hand"

The lyrics are a direct reference to President George Bush's (#41) campaign pledge to create a compassionate citizenry volunteering to help cope with society's ills. The "thousand points of light" symbolize the American citizen's spirit and a shining example of giving selflessly to care for one another's neighbor and brother. Along with "a kinder, gentler hand", Bush believed that each American could contribute to helping make the United States -- and the world -- a better place to live and work.

In 2008, the song "Lookin' for a Leader" with lyrics:

"And maybe it's a woman
Or a black man after all"

Referencing Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the official music video was prefaced by: "Every American President has left an impact on his country and the World. This musical history lesson from Neil Young takes a look at the past, present and future of US leadership."

Which brings us to 2016 and Donald Trump & Neil Young...

Donald Trump & Neil Young - 2014

And so began our long running coverage of these two men and their apparent love/hate relationship.

Neil Young's Open Letter To President Trump

‘The Visitor’
by Neil Young + Promise of the Real

In 2017, Neil Young announced his latest new album titled ‘The Visitor’ -- and sharing the 1st preview track of the song “Already Great”.  The song “Already Great” is the response to those complaining about America and the need for it to be "great again".

Also, see:

In 2020, Neil Young was still "Lookin' for a Leader", because "The Times" were a changin'.

JOE BIDEN IS THE GREATEST - Aug 8, 2023

In October 2024, Neil Young endorsed VP Kamala Harris for President, per a statement on Neil Young Archives. Young wrote: "Cast your vote for a beautiful future for your family."

So. From the "tin soldiers and Nixon" in 1970 to "loving" the current Vice President in 2024, Neil has covered the spectrum -- both as a Canadian and a U.S. citizen.

Not that music can change the world or anything like that afterall.

Because one person's perspective on freedom of speech is another's right to dissent.

Sigh. We have all been here before. Sometimes you have to lose to know how to win ... maybe.

Lastly, we bring to you one of the most viral posts in Thrasher's Wheat history: George & John, Donald & Neil + Bob: Sooner or Later, It All Gets REAL ... As in Now.

GEORGE Magazine - 1997; U.S. Citizen Neil Young - 2020

This one has it all rolled into one ... if you dare.  Why? Because the future proves the past.

Alchemy ... Past, Present, Future. We're all on a journey through the past while time fades away.

More on politics and music and  The Politics of Music or the Music of Politics?

Regardless of the results of the 5th of November, remember empathy and try to focus on our common humanity rather than our often trivial differences. And remember peace, of course.

To be honest and transparent here, we're no longer just "Lookin' For A Leader", mainly because "We're The Ones We've Been Waiting For".

"We're The Ones
We've Been Waiting For"

About Those Times We Went to Farm Aid Concerts ...

About that time that we went to a Farm Aid concert...

It happened back in 2016 during Neil Young's set @ Farm Aid 2016 in Bristow, Virginia, between the songs "Human Highway" and "Harvest Moon".

Neil Young begins his commentary on the state of the family farmer. Our  seatmate -- TW's Tour Manager "Hounds That Howell" -- then hoisted a F*CK Mon$anto shirt, which caught Neil's eye.

So, Neil Young stops the concert and points out the shirts we were wearing

We flipped off Neil and his band Promise of the REAL -- to which they in return flipped us all off back.

Quite a joyous little moment in our  Farm Aid concert going.

Then, at last year's Farm Aid concert we had the story of About That Time We Went To Farm Aid and A Bob Dylan & The HeartBreakers Concert Broke Out ...

While most of our amazing day at the Farm Aid 2023 Concert  was spent enjoying the music, food and people, a considerable amount of time went into speculating on the evening's "Special Guest" -- after Neil Young and before Willie Nelson's final slot.

And then -- without any introduction whatsoever -- a band slowly emerged from the side stage, slowly one by one. We turned to our seatmate Jim and The FarmAidians surrounding us and simultaneously inaudibly exclaimed with looks of disbelief --"DYLAN?!"

About That Time We Went To Farm Aid and A Bob Dylan & The HeartBreakers Concert Broke Out ...

So, about that time we went to Farm Aid and a Bob Dylan & The HeartBreakers concert broke out ...

While most of our amazing day at the Farm Aid 2023 Concert  was spent enjoying the music, food and people, a considerable amount of time went into speculating on the evening's "Special Guest" -- after Neil Young and before Willie Nelson's final slot.

"Special Guest" @ 10:04

One of the 1st guesses we heard early in the day was Bob Dylan, which we quickly dismissed as totally impossible. We also heard Our Sisters suggest The Dirty Knobs (Tom Petty's The HeartBreakers band), although we really weren't quite tuned into that one at the time. But both "speculations" turned out to be pretty spot on.

While we had been betting on Stephen Stills -- given the slot after Neil and Stills & Young performing earlier in the year at  ‘Light Up the Blues’  and Willie Nelson's 90th Birthday Tribute -- our buddy Jim was saying Eddie Vedder and/or Pearl Jam was the leading rumor.

Neil Young

When Neil Young's set consisted of playing only four songs and a truncated time slot, we began to realize someone big was going to happen.

All day long, the music never really stopped as acts were swiftly moved on and off the stage with very brief set changes.  But after Neil's set, the lights went down, the video screens went off and the chattering of speculation began to rise. Ushers who had been pretty cool all day with cameras and folks dancing in the aisles, suddenly began to challenge everyone for tickets and their assigned seats.

As the roadies went about their work preparing, we began to closely look at the equipment for clues.  The guitars, keyboard and drums were all scrutinized for a hint.   Then a stool was brought center stage.  Someone elderly, maybe?

As we would soon learn, the lyrics are prophetic:

"Because something is happening here
But you don't know what it is
Do you, Mister Jones?"

The drama and tension continued to ratchet up even higher as the set change went into 15 minutes and stage screen images of scenic farm landscapes were replaced by a stark, black-and-white photo of a windmill.

Dylan & The Heartbreakers

And then -- without any introduction whatsoever -- a band slowly emerged from the side stage, slowly one by one. We turned to our seatmate Jim and The FarmAidians surrounding us and simultaneously inaudibly exclaimed with looks of disbelief --"DYLAN?!"

Dylan played electric guitar for one of the very few times in roughly 20 years* [see comments below] for the three song set:

  • Maggie’s Farm (First Play since 2009)

  • Positively Fourth Street (First Play since 2013)

  • Ballad Of A Thin Man (First Play Since 2019)

It wasn't until after the brief 3 song set concluded did we learn that this was Tom Petty's band The HeartBreakers that Dylan had as his backup.  With Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, and Steve Ferrone we had just witnessed Dylan & The HeartBreakers.

Dylan sang better than anytime we've ever heard him -- which is what just about what everyone said who never saw early Dylan. He clearly enunciated the lyrics and seemed to enjoy his little solo jams with The HeartBreakers.

Dylan never uttered a word to the crowd and once the 3 songs were completed, he simply walked off the stage.

In the end, it was we -- the audience -- that was Mr. Jones. Something was happening there, but we didn't know what it was.

Looking back now, it was all somewhat logical.

Afterall, Bob Dylan's comments about family farmers being in danger of losing their farms through mortgage debt at Live Aid in 1985 inspired the very first Farm Aid concert And at that very first Farm Aid concert in 1985, Bob Dylan with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, was the first time they played together.

The day was already shaping up to be one of our all time best Farm Aid concerts ever what with Bob Weir, Lukas Nelson, Margo Price, Dave Matthews, Neil, and Willie along with so many other incredible artists. Certainly right up there near the top of lifetime concert experiences.

Obviously, we were not the only one's stunned and surprised by Bob Dylan's appearance.

From Behind the Scenes of Bob Dylan's Farm Aid Surprise | Bassist Lance Morrison explains how the shocking Dylan-Heartbreakers reunion came to be | Flagging Down the Double E’s by Ray Padgett:

Fans were just going nuts. And the secrecy— my sense is there was no rumor even among the attendees. Often with these thing, word leaks out. Someone spots a name on a dressing room door or something. It really seems to have been a shock.

Lance Morrison: Our flight from Indianapolis back into New York, there was a young guy who was in the control truck where they had the sound and the lights and everything like that. When the lights went down, they had no idea what was about to happen.

The actual Farm Aid crew didn’t know?

Lance Morrison: They had no idea. He even asked me, “Who made the decision to turn off all the screens?" Because I guess all the other acts had the screens behind them with the videos going, this big production. And I said, I just think that was Bob being like, "We don't need any of that kind of stuff."

Also I don't think Bob felt like he needed an introduction or anything like that. We just went on without introduction, didn't really speak between songs, and left. When I see videos of it, it definitely sets itself apart from the other acts, just that sparseness.

Given the lack of introduction, did people in the crowd figure it out right away what was happening?

Lance Morrison: The people up close realized that it was Bob and there was a big reaction, then it kept going back into the audience. It took a while for people a little further back to catch on.

But I mean, to be honest, at that point once we hit the stage, I am so focused on Bob it's hard to know exactly what else is going on.

From Cult Following by Ewan Gleadow:

"As far as iconic imagery of the legendary songwriter goes, there is no greater sight than a cowboy hat-wearing guitarist morphing the instrumental layover into a wild, Prince covering While My Guitar Gently Wheeps-like shot to the system as Dylan hits risible elongations of words.

It works, though.

That is the beauty of late-stage Dylan.

His reverence and even fear of putting a foot wrong guides him through dangerous patch after dangerous patch, and playing with the words no doubt keeps it fresh.

Does it keep it perfect and tightly wound?

Not exactly, and this Farm Aid 2023 appearance, while for all the right reasons, hears Dylan not quite hang with the all-time performances of his lengthy career. Still, the shock of this trio of songs and the appearance itself does some much-needed heavy lifting."

From The Reporter by BROOK STAAS:

"Bob Dylan’s unexpected appearance was nothing short of magical.

As he strummed the first chords, attendees flew out of their seats, utterly awestruck by the iconic musician’s presence. With every note, he proved that age is but a number, delivering a truly captivating performance. The applause that followed was deafening, with countless hands coming together in heartfelt admiration.

In essence, Farm Aid 2023 transcended the definition of a festival; it was a resonating movement with an age-old message: stand by our farmers, promote sustainable practices, and cherish the soil under our feet."

David Crosby and The Damage Done (or Not...)

Classic Rocker Mouths Off At Fan, Gets Dragged For His Trouble | Daily Wire

David Crosby -- yet again -- finds himself in serious blowback over some ill considered remarks. (Thanks Richie C.!)

The short story is that a Croz fan (DJBSackett @DjbSackett·

DJBSackett
@DjbSackett·
Hi @thedavidcrosby hope you are keeping well. Did a picture of you…. Thanks for the music

The fallout has not been kind to David Crosby.

So, the following is an attempt not to re-hash ad infinitum the never ending controversies of CSN & Neil Young , but to simply share something that we were unaware of completely.

Check this clip from 1967 Monterey Pop Festival of The Byrds.

The Byrds - "He Was a Friend of Mine" (Live at 1967 Monterey Pop Festival)

In the above clip, David Crosby makes a very brief statement about the John F. Kennedy assassination and then plays the Byrds song "He Was a Friend of Mine".

David Crosby: “They’re shooting this for television.

I’m sure they’re going to edit this out. I want to say it anyway, even though they will edit it out. When President Kennedy was killed, he was not killed by one man. He was shot from a number of different directions, by different guns.

The story has been suppressed, witnesses have been killed, and this is your country, ladies and gentlemen.”

"He Was A Friend Of Mine"

He was a friend of mine, he was a friend of mine
His killing had no purpose, no reason or rhyme
He was a friend of mine

He was in Dallas town, he was in Dallas town
From a sixth floor window a gunner shot him down
He was in Dallas town

He never knew my name, he never knew my name
Though I never met him I knew him just the same
Oh he was a friend of mine

Leader of a nation for such a precious time
He was a friend of mine

David Crosby: “Thank you. As I say, they will censor it I’m sure. They can’t afford to have things like that on the air. It’d blow their image.”

Due to Crosby’s controversial statement about the JFK assassination,  the Byrds'  Monterey performance was cut from television and film coverage of the festival.  It was this incident and similar circumstances which led to Crosby leaving the Byrds and eventually forming CSN.

But... history has proven that Crosby was right back in 1967 about the JFK assassination, as we know now.

It was -- as Bob Dylan put it recently -- a "Murder Most Foul".

Bob Dylan & Neil Young's 1975 Malibu Jams w/ Crazy Horse

Neil Young and Bob Dylan
Entertainment Tonight on 4-1-86

The never ending saga of Bob Dylan and Neil Young has always been a fascinating tale for us -- as well as -- many of our fellow travelers out there.

Today's guest post by Scott Bunn over on Recliner Notes, analyzes Dylan's song "Shelter from the Storm" and discusses the intersection between the Bob and Neil in Malibu during the 1975 Zuma album sessions.

While Young was recording the album Zuma with the reformed Crazy Horse in June 1975, Malibu Dylan wandered into the recording sessions that were happening at the Zuma Beach house belonging to producer David Briggs. McDonough writes about this encounter:

“Dylan, who lived around the corner from Briggs, shuffled in and joined the Zuma session, first on piano, then guitar.

‘He didn’t talk, just nodded,” said [Crazy Horse guitar player Frank ‘Poncho’ Sampedro]. ‘He was dressed in Sears clothes—I didn’t know it was Bob Dylan’…The action-packed lineup fizzled when the Horse inevitably fell apart. ‘We did a bunch of his songs, never got one right all the way through,’ said Poncho.

‘Neil told me later Dylan said, ‘Your band has a good beat, but they can’t play,’ and Neil replied, ‘Yeah, but think about it, Bob—you could play with them.’

McDonough writes that Sampedro recalled Dylan leading Neil and Crazy Horse on a group of songs from Blood on the Tracks.

Now that really would be something if Neil ever locates any recordings of those sessions?! Also, a great Jimmy McDonough quote on Crazy Horse playing w/ Bob. priceless.

Last year, we observed Father's Day by pointing out the semi-interesting fact that Bob Dylan and Neil Young released new albums.

Neil Young & Bob Dylan
(A Look Back At The Musical intersections of Bob & Neil)

Although some have serious reservations, the song "Old Man" is -- ostensibly -- about a ranch hand at what would become known as "Broken Arrow".

The "Old Man" Louis Avala & Neil Young
1970 Dutch documentary film by Wim Van der Linden

Another possibility is that the song "Old Man" is really about Neil's own father, Scott Young being the real "old man" behind the song.

So with Father's Day at hand ... from a not so young man to our old man...

The "Old Man" Louis Avala
YouTube - Neil Young - Old Man - Live at Massey Hall

From his 1972 album Harvest, "Old Man" is definitely one of Mr Young's most enduring songs of all time with brilliant banjo and steel guitar. James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt provide backing vocals.

The song was inspired by the caretaker of the Northern California Broken Arrow Ranch -- with over 1,000+ acres of prime land with views of both San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean -- which Young purchased for $350,000 in 1970 when he was just 25 years old young.

The song has themes of loneliness and lost love: "Live alone in a paradise that makes me think of two" recalled with a certain pain "love lost/such a cost/give me things that don't get lost."

Yet Neil searches on for that oh-so elusive heart of gold:

"I need someone to love me the whole day through
Oh one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true."

neil-young-heart-of-gold-film-still.jpg
"Neil Young: Heart of Gold" Film

In the film "Heart of Gold", Young introduces the song as follows:
About that time when I wrote (Heart of Gold), and I was touring, I had also -- just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time -- I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today.

And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avala and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, 'Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?'

And I said, 'Well, just lucky, Louie, just real lucky.' And he said, 'Well, that's the darndest thing I ever heard.'

And I wrote this song for him.

Neil Young at Broken Arrow Ranch - 1971

As we noted earlier this year, photographer Henry Diltz has taken many iconic photos of Neil Young, as well as, many other legendary musicians over the decades.

From Henry Diltz' blog on Morrison Hotel Gallery, here is the story about spending a day at Broken Arrow Ranch with Neil Young and the "Old Man".
"Old man look at my life..."

"Neil Young bought a ranch in Northern California which he named "Broken Arrow Ranch". I went up there a few times with Gary Burden in 1971 and stayed a couple days taking pictures. Gary was my art director/ partner and still works with Neil. We used to walk around the ranch in the morning, smoking a fatty and checking things out around the property.

The Ranch came with a foreman named Louis Avila who had been there for years. This particular morning we stopped by the foreman's bungalow and he and Neil had a talk on the porch. This was in 1971, a year before his album Harvest came out and as the story goes, this is the "Old Man" that Neil sings about.

We later went on to look in a barn where Neil had some guitars. He pulled out a little old Martin guitar, sat on a hay bale, and played a tune. How great it was to be a fly on the wall and document everything that happened. Lots of those pictures got used in Neil Young Songbooks in the 70's."

--Henry Diltz

Also, watch & listen to why Neil Young will never sing "Old Man" with a band again.
