CONCERT REPORT: Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts @ Philadelphia, PA - September 24, 2026
(Click photo to enlarge)
About last night…I went to Philadelphia last night to see 93-year-old Willie Nelson and 80-year-old Neil Young. Thanks for driving, Randy Schechter. Thanks for bringing snacks, Lance.I’ve seen Willie Nelson and Neil Young in concert multiple times. I’ve seen Willie about 10 times, and I’ve seen Neil about 35 times. Willie’s sets don’t vary that much, but he always sounds good. Neil’s set can vary a lot depending on the band and the tour.We didn’t get to the venue until almost 7, and we didn’t rush inside, so we didn’t hear all of the opening act, Ty Myers. What we heard sounded good. He did a 30-minute set. I’ll have to check him out a bit more. If he was invited to open for Willie and Neil, then he must be pretty good.Willie Nelson and the family band hit the stage at 8:01. The opening song was a prerecorded song and video montage, Living in the Promiseland. It’s a cover song that Willie made a video for several years ago. The song is about caring for the poor and helping immigrants, and the video features a lot of poor people in black & white photos standing in lines and in soup kitchens. Clearly a political message. At 8:06, the curtain pictured in the photo dropped and Willie Nelson and his band were there. His band included Mickey Raphael, who may well be the best harmonica player ever. I am always so impressed with Mickey’s playing. He’s never shrill. His melodies are delicate. He never overplays, in fact, he always leaves me wishing he had played a bit more. He really understands Willie’s style of phrasing, and Mickey jumps in with just right note of emphasis at just the right moment.Willie is still wringing sweet notes out his battered guitar, Trigger. He sang lead vocals, but it’s obvious that he doesn’t have the same vocal strength as in the past. He’d sing a verse, and then look a little winded, and then Micah or Lukas would pick up the vocals. He beams with pride as he listens to his sons play. The band included Willie’s sons Micah Nelson (also known as Particle Kid) on guitar and vocals and Lukas Nelson on guitar and vocals. He had Billy English and Kevin Smith on drums and bass. Micah and Lukas can both sound like Willie when needed but also have their own playing styles and vocal styles. They played a tight set, rolling quickly from one song to another. They also played fairly fast, which may also explain why Willie seemed winded at the end of some verses. At 93 years old, I am amazed that he can still play and sing and sound great, and that he even wants to tour at all. At one show a few years ago, Willie told us that he plans to play until he dies, and that he might die right on stage, but hopefully for all of us there, it wouldn’t be that night! I’m glad it wasn’t last night either. I’m not sure if this is the last Willie Nelson concert I’ll ever see. I would go again, primarily because of Mickey Raphael and Micah and Lukas. Willie has clearly peaked, but man, what a career and what a legacy. I own about 15 of Willie’s records, which sounds like a lot until you realize he has released more than 100 records.Micah introduced his song, “Die When I’m High (Halfway to Heaven) as “Here’s a Wilie Nelson song I wrote.” He said that Willie once said, “I’m so high, if I die, I’ll be halfway to heaven.” Micah said, “You have to write that song right now.” Willie said, “Why don’t you write it?” So, Micah did. It’s a really good song, and quite funny.Willie called Neil out to sing and play on “Are There Any More Real Cowboys”. It’s Neil’s song. Willie sang the second verse, and they all sang on the chorus. It was nice.Willie’s set was a little more than an hour. We were sitting in the last row of the pavilion. Luckily, it didn’t rain. But it was pretty chilly. I am glad I wore long underwear, and I had a winter jacket and hat. Willie played in a winter jacket. Did I mention it was cold? And being in the last row of the pavilion, it was also windy! Summer’s over. I’m ready for indoor shows. The set break was exactly 30 minutes.Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts hit the stage. Spooner Oldman on organ, Corey McCormick and Anthony LoGerfo on bass and drums, both from Lukas Nelson’s band Promise of the Real. Micah Nelson was on guitar and vocals, and Lukas Nelson was on piano for a few songs.Neil sounded really good vocally. The sound for the first few Willie songs seemed a little too low, but they worked that out during his set, and the sound for Neil was really good. I could hear all of the instruments clearly. He hit some crowd favorites, and I’ll admit, even though I’ve heard them a lot, “Comes a Time”, “Old Man” and “Heart of Gold” still stand as strong songs, and the crowd knew every word. “Harvest Moon” was lovely. And “After the Gold Rush” hit the mark too. His newest record includes some songs written in the mid-sixties for a record that never got released, so as Neil said, “It’s basically a new song.” That was “Casting Me Away from You.” “Earth Girl” is also off of Neil’s newest record. Acoustic Neil is aways nice, but the real fun begins when he straps on an electric guitar.
Powderfinger was as good a version as I’ve ever heard. I thought I would miss his old band, Crazy Horse, but I didn’t. I was happy to hear “Roll Another Number (For the Road), but I would have preferred to hear “Tonight’s the Night” from that record. Neil played for about an hour and 10 minutes. I would have happily listened for an hour more. And I am still not tired of hearing “Rockin’ in the Free World” because it’s a great song. Neil’s tour t-shirt says, “Keep Freedom Free.” I didn’t buy one (because I really do not need any more concert t-shirts, especially black ones.) But I love and live the sentiment. Keep Freedom Free!
Overall, a nice show. I would have happily not had Ty Myers on the bill and have had Willie and Neil play longer sets. But I also realize that expecting longer sets from 80-year-old and 93-year-old musicians is probably not reasonable, so I’ll take what we got. What did come through was the joy Willie and Neil get from playing. I’ve never seen a bad or disappointing show from either of them. They spread real joy through their music. I’m really happy both of them are willing to still tour and give us a taste of the power of their music.
I just realized as I went to post this that I never took a photo of Willie on stage. I love Willie & his band, I love, Mickey Raphael. I own 30 something Willie albums. I have seen him live.
But I must object to Mickey Raphael being called the greatest harmonica player ever.
He is awesome, incredibly talented, and does fit perfectly with Willie, even on the reggae album Countryman, which is a spectacular album.
But he is nowhere near the skill & harmonica mastery the 4 kings of the harp have reached.
He is a “country western” harmonica player. He has searing licks, impressive mastery of the instrument.
But Mickey is not on the same lofty level as Sonny Boy Williams, Little Walter, Paul Butterfield, & Charlie Musselwhite. All 4 of these harp players edge out Mickey.
Partly this is because all 4 of these kings of harmonica play Chicago Blues style.
The Germans invented the harmonica, tuned it to a train whistle, and unleashed it on the world.
But it took Black American Blues men to show the world how good a harmonica can sound. Some of their white fans picked up the blues harp and had the lungs to aspire to the level of the black American harmonica players.
Paul Butterfield & Charlie Musselwhite were the 2 white kings of the harp, but they had to start out hoping to be Prince.
I could listen to Mickey all day and live every minute of it. He has true power & even fury in his incredible playing style.
But he was not in Muddy’s band. And as incredible as he is, until we hear him play Chicago Blues, we just can’t really say “greatest ever.”
You could say “greatest living harmonica player” but Charlie Musselwhite is still here, still making albums” with Tom Waits, the Blind Boys of Alabama, & whatever else comes up.
Let’s just say “We love Mickey” and call him truly spectacular, incredibly passionate, absolutely incredible harp players. He sounds better today than he did 40 years ago.
We love Mickey. He kicks ass in the harmonica, like no living man can (because Charlie doesn’t play Country Western Harmonica.
Have a listen to Paul Butterfield making train sounds in this performance with The Band from The Last Waltz:

I was not born knowing what the most powerful harmonica sound was. My Dad played it for me on his harmonica & I heard it. Little Walter, Sonny Boy, Lil Walter, Paul, & Charlie. The 4 Kings. Thanks Dad (he is still kicking ass in the blues harp at age 87).
My Dad is not quite as good as Mickey now that his senior years have tried to slow him down.
Have a great day! There is room for 5 greats on the harmonica. Let’s give it up for Mickey!
Willie had good sense to keep Mickey & his sister Bobbie nearby.
Much Love, your rustie grain brother Alan in Seattle
PS - We all look forward to the Farm Aid report! Thank you!
“Could listen all day and LOVE every minute of it….. “
But we can say that “Mickey is the Greatest Country Western Harmonica player who ever lived.” He transcended the boring cowboy campfire harmonica sound & brought SEARING POWER to country western harmonica.
Thanks Mickey! Keep it up!

It’s early, I am drinking the greatest drug in the world, coffee…
I went off about Mickey, clearly. You Did Not say he was the best ever. Sorry! Where is that delete button again? 😁
I have a passion for harmonica skill & power. Understatement! Country western harmonica is by definition more understated than blues. Mickey bright more power, soul, & skill to country harmonica than the world had ever seen.

Now let’s see, what is the 2nd greatest drug in the world? There is no accounting for taste, as my late friend used to say. Roll Another #. yrgbais
PS- Excellent review!
Apologies for multiple posts, I do like to answer myself, it seems. The critics were right!
Watch this video of Paul Butterfield playing live with The Band on the epic song Mystery Train.

His name is Sonny Boy Williamson (but there were 2). He was the 2nd blues harp player with that name. He wrote the song One Way Out that the Allman Brothers were known for. He also did “Bring It On Home.” Sonny Boy was Howlin’ Wolf’s brother in law, married the Wolf’s sister. He taught Howlin Wolf how to play harmonica.
Howlin’ Wolf is my favorite Blues Artist

Thanks for the comments Brother Alan.
Yeah, Mickey is becoming an institution like Willie and Neil.
Suppose if you just keep plugging along forever, it eventually happens.
Btw, careful with that coffee!
Thanks so much for a truly outstanding review of the show. It helps for those of us not able to attend!
If I could see the delete button you all would have been maybe blessed with only 1 comment from me! Apologies for any nice folks I have irritated.

The SHOW!!!!! yrgbais
Oh right! The topic!
I watched it, & I loved it.
I liked Neil’s set with the Chrome Hearts. What a great band! Neil gave us a little bit of everything in the set & in his whole career!
Thanks for the Art, Neil. Thanks for the music! Thanks for NYA.com! It’s the other coolest place on the internet for those of us who still remember the Hippie Dream, hair on your head or not!
Neil Young, a national treasure. We are lucky to have him as a citizen in the cursed USA. He brings us light even in darkness.
All Kings die. We will flush the toilet soon. Our 2 party system in the USA is a joke. Oligarchy! (See 2015 Dem primary when the DNC screwed Bernie & us.). The DNC literally elected Trump by nominating the less popular Hillary. Bernie would have wiped out the shithead. National Health Care for ALL, even immigrants!
I digress. It’s so easy! Apologies
The show: It was emotionally moving for me. I love Willie, & he is a national treasure who bucked tradition & had not 1 but 2 highly talented musician sons! They can sing, play, write. That reminds me of their Uncle Neil (& of course, their Dad!).
Lukas & Micah DO have the ability to sing just like Dad. They also both have their own powerful & inspiring, unique artistic identities.
And they can support him live with all the skill & love we see. Willie Nelson’s sons give me hope for the future of rock & roll & country rock & Cosmic Country (& whatever you would like to call it!)
Gram Parsons would be proud.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Micah & he spoke fondly of this blog & said TW helps the band keep up with stuff, a finger on the pulse of Neil Young fan base.
Agreed, a great review!
Continued: (Re : folks who post on TW):
Loudmouths like me and the rest of you good people post on the blog. Again I will say it is surprising that only 5% of Thrasher’s Wheat readers do post any thoughts or words.
Thank you to all who comment and participate.
And to all this who don’t or do, this blog stays afloat with help from you. Please consider donating money directly to Thrashers Wheat to buy bandwidth & keep up with expenses.
Thrasher earns NO MONEY for giving us this blog to enjoy! He pays for a lot of stuff out of his own pocket.
See Pay Pal button on right side of Thrasher’s Wheat home page.
The epic Thrasher’s Wheat T-shirts
do not actually turn a profit. He did not do that for money. None of this is for money! No Ads. And Free Speech as well! Maybe the ONLY place for free speech?
So please think of donating to help pay for the blog.
Thrasher never asked me to fundraise for Thrasher’s Wheat or tell you to donate. And he admitted the shirts turned no profit the first time around. In fact, he had to pay up for the difference! I was shocked! How un- American he is! How truly wonderful that is!
Thank you Thrasher!
Part of my reason for bugging you to donate is I am usually broke myself. Is it partly guilt that makes me ask you to donate. Probably so!
I had to take half a year off work to have 2 hand surgeries. I got to see what retirement would feel like! I love it!
That 6 months may be the only retirement I ever get to enjoy! I was relieved to find out I am not a workaholic. You don’t want to have too many vices!
Have a very good day!
