Comment of the Moment: Mick Jagger on Politics in Music

Mick Jagger
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Something a little different here.

Our Comment of the Moment is from thread "Neil Young Patron ZOOM Call Update: Archives Volume 4 Release + Moreby Knowledge Nomad:

There's a really good interview with Mick Jagger in the New York Times that was posted this week (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/11/magazine/mick-jagger-interview.html) Definitely worth a listen. But, for the purposes of Neil Young fans, there's a few times when he mentions that getting political in your songs is probably best dropping hints at and being tangential to your writing because the public doesn't want to hear it.

"Interviewer: I want to put the question in slightly different terms. There’s a movie performance of yours that I love, in “The Man From Elysian Fields.” You play a middle-aged man who runs an escort service. That performance has a lot of regret in it, and I assume that you wouldn’t have been able to give a performance like that earlier in your life. So, similarly, are there things that you can do in a song or did on the new album that make you think, Oh, I wasn’t capable of inhabiting that lyric earlier?

Mick: That’s a good question. It requires a lot of thought to give a good answer. I wouldn’t have written any of these songs when I was 30, honestly. And I’ve also gotten into this habit of doing songs that are about personal relationships and then I throw a verse about politics in there. That’s a trick that I’ve learned from other songwriters, because nobody wants to hear a whole song about politics or social comment. A blues song like “Rough and Twisted,” you talk about women and everything, but then you throw in stuff that’s obviously political: “The only club was called conspiracy.” “What they wanted was tyranny.” So you find yourself using these tricks."

And again:

"Interview: There are a handful of political lines sprinkled throughout the new record. You sing about scuttling billionaires “scrambling to their bolt-holes in the sky,” about dirty rat autocrats and rubber-stamping judges. I find it heartening to know that Mick Jagger sees the same problems as the rest of us. Can you tell me more about what you’re seeing when you look around the world?

Mick: It’s not the first time I’ve done songs with social comment. I like doing it, but in small doses. It’s pop music, you know. “Ringing Hollow” is completely social comment. But even then, I had two songs that were on the same subject, which is my love of America."

So, clearly Neil takes a different approach. As do many other great musicians both contemporary and historically. But, does Mick have a point? Certainly the formula that has worked for the Stones is to eschew much social commentary, and Mick, at least, is aware enough [how many rock stars have attended the London School of Economics and Political Science and read Kant?] that he most certainly could do more social commentary.

My own take is, which isn't particularly deep, there is indeed an audience for music with social commentary, but also that it's understandable that even those with a taste for social commentary in their music also like music that doesn't fit that description. I've got room in my collection for the Stones, Neil, Nina, Jesse Welles, Shinyribs, etc.
Thanks for the comment Knowledge Nomad. That's two CotM's in the past week, so congratulations. We very appreciate the thoughtful observations here on TW. Especially on one of our long running topics -- Politics in Music.

We watched the interview, as well and encourage others to as well.  Mick gets a bit into Bruce Springsteen and his audience.  Essentially, Mick says The Stones "don't lecture their audiences."

Good advice Mick. While we here @ TW may have lectured our audiences on occasion in the past, we feel that temptation has been squashed more recently -- for better or worse -- depending on your perspective.  That is, if you're picking up on what we're putting down.

For July 4, Neil Young Archives has posted USA 250 - LWW 2026  -- a revisited Living With War Volume #2. (Thanks Road Dawg!)

Neil writes on NYA:
"There are small changes within the songs. The mix is refocused on now. The choir is huge and has a band."

Neil Young - Living With War - Living With War 2026 (Official Video)

Released in 2006, Neil Young's album Living With War was a direct confrontation of the need for a call to action.

Once completed, Neil played the album for his label Reprise and than immediately gave a live interview to CNN. For many fans, this was Neil at his finest -- speaking truth to power.

Still "Living With War", v. 3.0 & "the most courageous album of 2006" by Neil Young

Living With War by Neil Young - 2006

And here we are still living with war in the 21st century.

It all started for us back in 2006 -- and nothing has been the same since -- when an obscure blog link popped up over in the right sidebar here on Thrasher's Wheat.

According to the blog Last Left Turn Before Hooterville, a new Neil Young album was being recorded. The blog, written by a member of a 100-voice choir, said the album would contain the lyrics:
"Let's impeach the President for lyin'!".
Once completed, Neil Young played the album for his label Reprise and then immediately gave a live interview to CNN. For many fans, this was Neil at his finest -- speaking truth to power.

war-neil-interview.jpg

Neil Young's album "Living With War" would go on to become music's "Fahrenheit 9/11" film equivalent. And the rest is history, as some say.

"If nothing else, Living With War was the most courageous album of 2006."

(Complete TW coverage of the Living With War controversary at Neil Young News: 04/01/2006 - 05/01/2006 and Neil Young News: 05/01/2006 - 06/01/2006.)

In 2022, as the war drums started beating for War in Ukraine ("Living With War", v. 2.0), Neil Young penned an editorial on  Neil Young Archives: VIEWPOINT: The Apotheosis of War.

“The Apotheosis of War”

In a followup, Neil Young writes "Streets are the Stage for Change" and asks:

"THE RUSSIAN PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP FOR HUMANITY and let the whole world know who they really are."

With military madness continuing to kill our countries, what's the average citizen of the world to do?

Obviously, we're Still Living With War -- both in our minds and hearts -- because it's all just deja vu, all over again and again and again ...

As Neil Young has stated: "History is a cruel judge of overconfidence."

Neil Young Signs "PEACE"

More "Shock And Awe" was coming our way.

deja-vu-film-poster-sm.jpg
"CSNY DEJA VU" Film Poster - 2008

Part performance, part documentary and commentary, the film CSNY Déjà Vu is a call to peace and remains relevant today. Because if we ignore the lessons of history, we do so at our peril and increase the likelihood of repeating the same mistakes.

From album "Living With War", the title track's lyrics continue their prescient revelations on today's times. so, carry on.

[Try to remember peace (visualize) ]

"I join the multitudes
I raise my hand in peace
I never bow to the laws of the thought police
I take a holy vow
To never kill again
To never kill again

I'm living with war in my heart
I'm living with war in my heart and my mind
I'm living with war right now"

Despite what the critics wrote negatively about the album -- if nothing else -- Living With War was the most courageous album of 2006.

And so here we are in 2026 with "Living With War", v. 3.0.  We are in a loop and we are not learning our histories and repeating the same mistakes.  Break the cycle. Make peace cool again. Now.

And we'll probably do this again in 2032 ("Living With War", v. 4.0) ... if only ... at the least, for our "Families".

peace

ps- apparently, Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts have been in the studio, with "8 songs recorded".  A "Living With War", v. 3.0 maybe?  Well, we shall see and hear eventually.  Hopefully the new songs provoke another generation to support peace. We are dreamin' people ...

pss - Note that LWW is now the default playback song of the day on NYA. thanks Jake!

NEW VIDEO: "as time explodes" by Neil Young

"as time explodes"
via NeilYoungArchives.com

Neil Young has released a new video titled "as time explodes", via NeilYoungArchives.com.

The  video's soundtrack is the Greendale anthem song "Be the Rain" with images of the Trump administration, tech billionaires and "No Kings Rally".

image via "as time explodes" video @ NeilYoungArchives.com

A banner in the video carries the message: "THE 1% RUINS THE WORLD".

Recall that just last month, Neil Young announced plans to withdraw his music from Amazon.com. The reaction here was quite prolific against the backdrop of October's "No Kings Rally".

Also, recall that Neil Young said at the 2025 Farm Aid Press Conference that "We need a 'Conscience Tax' on billionaires".

Neil Young vs. Amazon: Neil Young To Withdraw Music from Amazon.com

Neil Young vs. Amazon
image via Rusted Moon

Neil Young has announced that he will withdraw his music catalog from Amazon Music.

Folks may recall back in 2022 when Neil Young had his music catalog removed from Spotify.

In a statement on Neil Young Archives, Neil Young announced that his music will soon no longer be available on the platform. In the message, published on October 8, 2025, he urged people to stop shopping at Amazon and its US supermarket chain Whole Foods:
"FORGET AMAZON AND WHOLE FOODS.
Stop buying from big corporations."
Instead, people should "buy local" and "buy direct." Consumers should support their community and visit local businesses. The goal is to "Take America Back" by doing the right thing and supporting local businesses.

Neil goes on to criticize big corporations for "selling out America" accusing corporations of crippling the US government, endangering people's incomes, undermining personal safety, and jeopardizing families' healthcare.

Neil Young specifically mentions Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who supports the Trump administration. He argues that America is at the beginning of an "age of corporate control." Everyone must therefore give up something to save the country. Therefore, Neil Young concludes:
"Soon, my music will no longer be available there."
Neil Young has had a long and tangled relationship with digital music vendors such as Amazon. Much of the struggle is detailed in the book "To Feel the Music" by Neil Young and Phil Baker.

Heading out to where the pavement turns to sand ...

"It was then I knew I'd had enough Burned my credit card for fuel Headed out to where the pavement turns to sand With a one-way ticket to the land of truth And my suitcase in my hand How I lost my friends I still don't understand"
Thrasher by Neil Young
image via GROK

Hey hey, Thrashers here with a PSA ... standby ...

Our last break here at Thrasher's Wheat was in 2021 due to an "unplanned/forced sabbatical".  Prior to that, we went off the grid and "on the beach" back in 2016. So this will only be our 3rd break in almost 30 years of blogging?!

Twist and shout. Fork in the Road and all of that, you know.

So this all seems like a good time to get away somewhere nice and warm; somewhere where the pavement turns to sand.  And -- more importantly  -- work on our tans, unplug from the sea of madness, and declutter our minds and souls.

As humbled as we might be by running what is now the 2nd longest continuously running website dedicated to a single topic on the Internet [i.e., Original Influencer #2], it is our long relationship with our soulmate and the unconditional love that matters the most.

And thank you everyone so much for your support of independent media.

So as we consciously co-create awareness of our separate realities, we'll see everyone on the other side of the Big Shift. C'mon, break on through to the other side ... break on through ... break on through ...

(Incidentally, this resonated with us. Insert standard disclaimer here.)

In the meantime, all of you oh-so wonderful rustie grains and friends out there,  seek only the wheat. No chaff. Please promise.  Because the winnowing is the hardest part. [NOTE: wheat = truth; chaff = false; winnowing = disCERNment ]

Like a smoke ring day when the wind blows,
we won't be back till later on, if we do come back at all ...
But you know us, and we'll miss you now ...

peace & love,
thrasher and thrashette

ps - And an early Happy Valentine's Day to our Heart of Gold, Thrashette. I love you!

Once Again, Neil Young Takes A "Stand For Peace"

"Stand For Peace" by Neil Young
(Frame from Official Music Video)

UPDATED

Neil Young released an official music video on Thanksgiving Day titled "Stand For Peace".

"Stand For Peace" is an instrumental of the American national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner" on electric guitar, similar to Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. The video is directed by Young's wife Daryl Hannah.

jimi-hendrix-woodstock-1969-crop.jpg

Before moving into some background onto background on Neil Young's longtime position on war and peace, a comment earlier by Dan:
@ The Metamorphic Rocker : You are not alone in your thinking. The words you have written are logical, and well thought out. [See comment here by Meta Rocker] I just wanted you to know that I understand your position completely, and support your views wholeheartedly.

If we could all somehow just get past the ’Us Against Them’ mentality, and see each other as the same species, then perhaps we could make this world a better place. Until then we are sadly doomed to repeat history time and time again.

If the human race could finally understand just how much better off ‘everyone’ would be if we were able to consolidate our efforts together, then there would be no one going hungry, or homeless. Or die because they can’t afford health insurance. Everyone could be free to express themselves without judgment, or persecution. Instead of ‘don’t tread on me’ we could embrace ‘don’t tread on anyone’. Then maybe life on earth wouldn’t be so damn dangerous.

We are one of the only species on earth that hunts itself….for their own gain.

Greed kills, and as Dylan once sang…. Money doesn’t talk, it swears.

But sadly, here we are in 2023 and we're still living with war.

Living With War by Neil Young - 2006

If there was ever an artist to which the label "anti-war" sticks, it would be Neil Young.

Over 50 years since "Ohio" and Kent State, the tin soldiers are still marching onwards toward war.  Except this time, not just some random regional conflict to keep the War Machine primed, but full on discussion and encouragement to get a full blown World War #3 going.

Military madness, indeed.

In 2022, as the war drums started beating in Ukraine, Neil Young penned an editorial on  Neil Young Archives: VIEWPOINT: The Apotheosis of War.

Obviously, we're Still Living With War -- both in our minds and hearts -- because it's all just deja vu, all over again and again and again ...

In a 2008 article on Who Got Iraq Right? by Greg Mitchell and Tom Engelhardt, they include Neil Young and his album Living With War as an alternative voice for:
"... exposing the criminal nature of, and the many costs of, the Iraq war that have emerged from an "alternative" universe that includes former war correspondents, reporters for small newspapers or news services, comedians, aging rock 'n rollers, and bloggers, among others. "
As Neil Young has stated: "History is a cruel judge of overconfidence."

Neil Young Signs "PEACE"

So more "Shock And Awe" coming everyone's way again?

Once completing the album Living With War in 2007, Neil Young played the album for his label Reprise and than immediately gave a live interview to CNN. For many fans, this was Neil at his finest -- speaking truth to power.

So did "Living With War" become the rock equivalent to the film "Fahrenheit 9/11"? For critics, it seemed to be the case.

Despite what the critics wrote negatively about the album -- if nothing else -- Living With War was the most courageous album of 2006.

In 2016, Neil Young released the album "Peace Trail".

Even though when Neil Young sings about peace and love and war he admits that he doesn't "really know what I'm saying" and while "Just singing a song won't change the world", it certainly has proven to be a good starting point at least.

Pete Townshend and Neil Young

Pete Townshend shared some interesting thoughts about Neil Young in an interview in 2022 with Rolling Stone Magazine by Andy Greene as pondered by Otis Gibbs.  (Thanks Bob G.!)

Otis quotes from  Rolling Stone article:

Pete Townshend: "If you go on YouTube, you’re likely to hear Neil Young at the Bridge School wailing away with his old Gretsch with a voice like an old lady.

What we don’t know is that he’s written some of the most beautiful songs that have ever been written, and also some of the most rocking. That’s true of Joni as well."

Marcus Mumford: Advice from Neil Young Influenced Debut Solo Album | NME

Neil Young and Marcus Mumford
(Click photo to enlarge)

Over the decades, we here at TW have extensively documented Neil Young's vast influence on other musicians (see 50+ Reasons Why Neil Young's Music Matters).

Here is Marcus Mumford on how advice from Neil Young influenced his debut solo album  where  "He told me the importance of recorded music".

From NME interview by Tom Skinner:

Marcus Mumford: “Neil Young sat me down about 10 years ago and told me the importance of recorded music and that I should pay more attention to the way in which we record because I was always [like], ‘Ah, it’s just an advert for a live show.’

He was like, ‘No man, these things last.'”

I felt like on this record, I listened to that [advice]. I paid closer attention to the way it sounded than anything I’d ever done before.”

David Crosby and The Damage Done (or Not...)

Classic Rocker Mouths Off At Fan, Gets Dragged For His Trouble | Daily Wire

David Crosby -- yet again -- finds himself in serious blowback over some ill considered remarks. (Thanks Richie C.!)

The short story is that a Croz fan (DJBSackett @DjbSackett·

DJBSackett
@DjbSackett·
Hi @thedavidcrosby hope you are keeping well. Did a picture of you…. Thanks for the music

The fallout has not been kind to David Crosby.

So, the following is an attempt not to re-hash ad infinitum the never ending controversies of CSN & Neil Young , but to simply share something that we were unaware of completely.

Check this clip from 1967 Monterey Pop Festival of The Byrds.

The Byrds - "He Was a Friend of Mine" (Live at 1967 Monterey Pop Festival)

In the above clip, David Crosby makes a very brief statement about the John F. Kennedy assassination and then plays the Byrds song "He Was a Friend of Mine".

David Crosby: “They’re shooting this for television.

I’m sure they’re going to edit this out. I want to say it anyway, even though they will edit it out. When President Kennedy was killed, he was not killed by one man. He was shot from a number of different directions, by different guns.

The story has been suppressed, witnesses have been killed, and this is your country, ladies and gentlemen.”

"He Was A Friend Of Mine"

He was a friend of mine, he was a friend of mine
His killing had no purpose, no reason or rhyme
He was a friend of mine

He was in Dallas town, he was in Dallas town
From a sixth floor window a gunner shot him down
He was in Dallas town

He never knew my name, he never knew my name
Though I never met him I knew him just the same
Oh he was a friend of mine

Leader of a nation for such a precious time
He was a friend of mine

David Crosby: “Thank you. As I say, they will censor it I’m sure. They can’t afford to have things like that on the air. It’d blow their image.”

Due to Crosby’s controversial statement about the JFK assassination,  the Byrds'  Monterey performance was cut from television and film coverage of the festival.  It was this incident and similar circumstances which led to Crosby leaving the Byrds and eventually forming CSN.

But... history has proven that Crosby was right back in 1967 about the JFK assassination, as we know now.

It was -- as Bob Dylan put it recently -- a "Murder Most Foul".

"Live Music Is Better": The Great Guitars @ The Birchmere — 5/3/22

 The Great Guitars:
John Jorgenson, Martin Taylor & Frank Vignola
The Birchmere, Alexandria, Virginia - May 3, 2022
(photos by thrashette - Click photo to enlarge)

As you know, last year, we had a rather life changing event occur where we can truly say that "The Music Saved Our Lives" -- both seriously and literally.

And -- as we discussed throughout 2020 & 2021 ... everybody knows "Live Music Is Better", of course. (Or, another example, "Live Music Is Better" - Mid-Summer 2021 Edition #2 Son Volt @ The Birchmere — 3/2/22 or  -- most recently --  Cowboy Junkies @ The Birchmere — 4/10/22).

John Jorgenson, Martin Taylor & Frank Vignola

Earlier this week ( 5/3/22), we caught The Great Guitars: John Jorgenson, Martin Taylor & Frank Vignola at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia and it was well, great -- just as advertised.  Great not just because we  were simply enjoying live music with our new friends but because we got something we always consider  a treat ... a call out by the artists onstage.

The short story is that thrashette is long time fan of The Great Guitarist Martin Taylor.  When  thrashette called out Martin's name at the beginning of the show, Martin looked out and asked who was that?,  thrashette identified herself, and, well, it then became almost a personal concert for our dear  thrashette sitting at the front table seat directly at Martin's knees.

Martin Taylor

Hence, the "album cover" pose from stage photo for thrashette above!

And who did you hear this week?

Rare R@D "Live Music Is Better" Bumper Sticker

(via TW Archives)

So we're just glad, fortunate and blessed to be able to go a few miles down the road to a splendid music venue that respects both the artists and the audiences  and enjoy live music with our dear friends.

So let the music continue to flow unrestricted and freely to all across the lands in the summer of 2022!!!

After all, isn't it all about the "Ordinary People of RUST"?
