Neil Young Announces New Album: 'Second Song'

Neil Young has announced another new studio album titled 'Second Song' and recorded with the Chrome Hearts. 

On Times Contrarian | Neil Young Archives, Neil writes that the album, with eight total songs, contains three written in 1963, which have remained unreleased. Neil explains the creative process beginning several months ago when he spent several days composing new lyrics and melodies in the early morning hours. In early March, the recording sessions began under a full moon at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studios in Malibu.  

During the two days of recording with the Chrome Hearts, they recorded five new songs.  A search of the archives discovered previously unreleased early material. 

The final mixing and mastering were completed in April under a full moon. In another statement on NYA titled "Moon To Moon,", Neil writes that the new music is a "special gift" that he "really feels".

Recording 'Second Song', my next studio album for Reprise records, was a lifetime experience. First, the music was breathing. Every song of the seven released on this album is straight form the heart.

Second, we tried to do something we have never done: record digital and analog masters at the same time.

We did this so we could show the difference we know and believe in, my friends and I. Analog was the beginning, and it never sounded better. Hi res digital is a clear second best. We are finishing the two versions and will release them both. The Digital hi res master and the Analog Vinyl. You can hear the difference, instantly. They are both beautiful if the song is. One is as deep as life. One is the highest quality counterfeit copy. If you are interested in the sound you can disappear into and lose yourself… over repeated listenings, Analog.

I made records like that in the beginning. I miss the quality people today hardly ever get a chance at hearing. Music is infinitely deep. Museum quality sound is analogue.

Try comparing these if you get a chance. For true analog playback, there can be no digital components in the player or amplifier or speakers. I do hope you enjoy the music no matter how you listen. We made it for all of us.

IN THE STUDIO: Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts Recording New Album

Neil Young is recording another album in the studio, this time with his latest new band The Chrome Hearts. 

Per producer and sound engineer John Hanlon's Instagram  (via Rusted Moon Rusted Moon), Neil Young is at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studio in Malibu. From photo caption, the recording is analog 16 track direct to vinyl.

Shangri-La Studio is where Neil Young recorded his last studio album "World Record" with Crazy Horse in 2022. The last full moon was on November 15th, so presumably the recording was around that time.  Rick Ruben does not seem to appear in the photo so presumably Neil and Hanlon produced the album.

Neil Young wrote that the songs “were so sad at the time that I couldn’t put it out. I just skipped it and went on to do another album in its place.” (The reason for said sadness, again to quote Neil from that same post: “The music of Toast is about a relationship. There is a time in many relationships that go bad, a time long before the break up, where it dawns on one of the people, maybe both, that it’s over. This was that time.”)

Comment of the Moment: Every Neil Young Studio Album, Ranked | UPROXX

This past weekend, we posted an overview titled "Every Neil Young Studio Album, Ranked" | UPROXX by Steven Hyden.

The UPROXX overview provided a very in depth look at Neil Young's career with a focus on studio album -- with a few exceptions* -- and it seemed most appreciated Hyden's efforts to attempt some type of "Big Picture" of Neil Young's wild career.

So, here is our Comment of the Moment on "Every Neil Young Studio Album, Ranked" | UPROXX by Dan:

I’m of the opinion that attempting to rank or categorize art (be it music, writing, painting, dance, compositions, etc, etc), is ultimately an exercise in futility. 

Concerning an artist as prolific as Neil Young, with his extensive body of work, everyone will obviously have their personal favorites, yet personal taste shouldn’t be equated into the overall value of such a vast output. Nor should numbers of unit’s sold, or a ‘Rolling Stone Magazines’ 500 greatest albums of all time list. A body of work this vast contains way too many variables to condense into a simple list.

There are different eras where Neil’s focus is represented clearly, and others where the results were more of a mixed bag of different textures. Neither one should carry more, or less weight when evaluating the whole. Each one has value. To dissect a fifty plus year career requires the ability to first accept the whole, and then begin to dig deeper into the individual works. Each one carries with it the times in which it was created.

There are internal and external elements that need to be considered before one can claim an understanding of the finished product. At the time the artist begins their work on a particular project there are things occurring within their personal lives. And in some cases those things may also be affected by historical events happening outside their personal lives. The health and well-being of the artist. Their relationships with family and friends. The current trends and fashions happening in their respective fields should also be considered. There are so many different aspects of creating works of art, and these outside elements can play a big part in the finished results. So they must be considered when assessing their individual worth, and how each relates to the whole.

As a body of work, I believe that Neil Young has created something truly extraordinary for future generations. Not only for them to enjoy, but also to learn a great lesson from. He’s an exemplary example of an artist who fearlessly follows his own heart, and refuses to be dictated by anyone else’s opinions or ideas of what he should, or shouldn’t do with his gift. He has always trusted and protected it from being infiltrated by outside forces, and this is one reason he has sustained such a long career. This may be his greatest lesson for future generations…. Stay true to yourself, first and foremost. Always trust your heart and follow the muse wherever it leads you.

When we look back on the history of art in all its forms, it has always been those who refuse to settle; pushing the boundaries of their craft. These are the artists we recall with the most admiration. The artists who are driven by their natural instincts to do the work. Not for monetary gain or public adoration, but because it must be done, because they are compelled to do it.

That is how I categorize Neil Young’s overall output, and the highest of qualities in which it exhibits for those willing to listen with an open heart and mind.

The UPROXX review wasn't just another run of the mill catalog rundown. Again, not that anyone really needs another album review list, but this article makes a very sincere effort to capture both BIG NY and little NY albums. We found Hyden's review to be actually quite personalized. Kind of thought the Harvest review pretty much summed up the classic view on Neil ... as a romantic.

As we mentioned in the comments, one of the most enlightening observations was how Neil's 1980s albums don't seem so strange at all when compared to some of his post 2000 work. Afterall, look at how history has re-evaluated TRANS. TRANS has gone from the bottom of the barrel to the middle of the pack, thanks to FITR (which we love, of course.)

For us, we look at Neil Young's discography as fitting into 3 rust buckets:

1. Essential
2. Interesting
3. Non-Essential

And if it really is all one song, then the song remains the same -- only it keeps getting longer and longer and louder and louder ... or something ...

Sometimes you can trust the ranking, polling and voting and sometimes ... 

From Every Neil Young Studio Album, Ranked | UPROXX by Steven Hyden,  a very in depth look at Neil Young's career with a focus on studio album -- with a few exceptions. (Thanks Mike "Road Dawg"!)

The review begins with the following  Neil Young quote:

“I know that the sacrifice of success breeds longevity.

That’s an axiom. Being willing to give up success in the short run ensures a long run.”

We were not familiar with the quote and went hunting around for it and located in a SPIN interview when Neil Young was named 1993 Artist of the Year:

[continued] "If you’re really doing what you want to do. I think that works. I don’t know.

I won’t know for 20 years.” He broke off laughing.

Well, 30 years on from the quote, do we really know yet?  Maybe it will take another 30 years to fully comprehend the vast legacy Neil Young continues to churn out like wake from a yacht.

And so it is that the rather daunting task to ever attempt to rank or categorize or compartmentalize Neil Young's body of work given it's sprawling range, idiosyncrasies, style/genre hopping eras -- to name just a few pitfalls.

Starting with Living With War (2006) at  #42, UPROXX's Hyden valiantly trundles down the broken roads and across the superhighways attempting to explain the weirdness of the 1980's Geffen years with the even more bewildering and exhilarating post-2000 releases.

The Essentials: "Sleeps With Angels" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse | Old Grey Cat

Here's a look back at a very essential album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Sleeps With Angels (1994).

In particular, this review looks at the album as recorded chronologically -- as opposed to the actual album sequencing -- and makes some very interesting observations.

Over on Old Grey Cat, a re-review from  "The Essentials":

An album’s sequencing is an important factor – it’s somewhat akin to putting together a puzzle without a picture to work from. 

If the songs had been laid out in the order they were recorded, well, it would have been a great album. But by sequencing it the way that they did, Neil and Briggs upped it to a greater realm. I should add, I suppose, that Neil did little to promote the album after its release – no interviews or tours. Instead, he let the music speak for itself. One result, I think, is that it’s become somewhat overlooked in the pantheon that is his oeuvre. To those who’ve never heard it, I say play it today; and for the initiated, give it another listen. It’s a powerful piece. 

As I said way back when, it ranks with his best ever.

Comment of the Moment: 'Sleeps With Angels" Film Now Playing on #3 | Neil Young Archives

Much, much excitement in the Rust community over the latest NYA Subscriber News and the premiere of a work in progress documentary of the making of the album Sleeps With Angels by Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

Primarily, the enthusiasm centers around watching the late David Briggs -- Neil Young's long time associate and Producer -- collaborate in the studio. Our Comment of the Moment in on the post 'Sleeps With Angels" Film Now Playing on #3 | Neil Young Archives by David R.:

Nice to see.

Pity all the music seems to be the same as the final studio versions. Great to see Neil with short hair and at one point even no sideburns. Cool to see him on the flute and playing distorted harmonica. Made me wonder if the characters in Trans Am are the start of the sort of thinking that led to Greendale.

I loved this record at the time and listening back I am still astonished by how good it is. Personally I think it might be Neil's best. I never thought about how different the sound is to Ragged Glory though it is true it is on a different planet. There is something of David Lynch to it, it would work as a soundtrack to one of his films, and I recall alongside grunge that was a major cinematic line art followed in the early 90s. Listening again I can feel Neil really tapping into that here and it is notable and logical that he then followed it with Dead Man.

I know a lot has been said about how Neil might have lost part of his muse when he lost Briggs, though sadly that is also clear listening again. Ever since Neil I feel has relied too much and too often on the just plug in and play approach that was first tested ironically here with Piece of Crap. Sleeps with Angels is very much so a studio record and feels and sounds like the product of one of those long experimental spells in the studio that started with The Beatles in the 60s and maybe ended with Radiohead at the millennium. The timing for Neil was perfect too, it was late enough after the 80s to not go over the top with studio sounds, drum machines, synths etc, and still early enough to have the enormous music industry support that allowed bands to really indulge themselves making a record.

I guess that is it, Neil has always blown with the wind of his own muse, though back then there was also an entire industry and experienced team that in this prime of his life blew behind him too.

The late David Briggs was Neil Young's producer on several key albums including Tonight's The Night, Zuma and Ragged Glory. Briggs' influence on the recording process has been lauded as a major contributing factor to Neil Young's recording success bringing a unique "discipline" to the process.

In a recent interview with Neil Young he discusses recording the album Colorado with Crazy Horse and on bringing real quality to streaming audio -- whether we want it or not.

Neil Young: “We started off doing something that we’d never done before, just to see what would happen,” Young says. He’d played some solo shows in the months leading up to the session and rediscovered a concept even more satisfying than first takes: no first takes at all.

“Every time you do a song, it’s an opportunity to define it and what it means and how it feels,” he says. “So if you feel it while you’re doing the song [live], you’re fucked, you’ve already done the song. It’s only going to happen once like that, when you get that feeling. And so I had that feeling on a couple of the songs, that I’d done the song. I didn’t want to do it again.”

“It’s really hard to chase something once the singer’s done,” Lofgren says. “Why do it? So it was quite challenging. When Neil plays live, he’s got great time, but he wasn’t playing to a click track. Ralphie and Billy were great at learning the track and weaving in with the groove.”

There are jams and there are half-baked ideas. There are indelible melodies and eco-anthems and echoes of the Memories. There is a rhythm track made from Lofgren’s tap dancing shoes run through an octave divider (“Eternity”). There is Ralph Molina's and Billy Talbot’s otherworldly sense of space on perhaps the most exquisitely fragile Crazy Horse jam of all time (“Milky Way”), the type of creation Young wants listeners to experience in the same fidelity as the band did.

Over the years, we have regarded reviews from Alan's Album Archives to be indispensable for in-depth analysis of classic or neglected albums.

We are highlighting this review because Alan's Album Archives has compiled probably the most extensive collection of Neil Young album critical analysis anywhere. So here's an interesting look at COLORADO by Neil Young & Crazy Horse on Alan's Album Archives:

Neil sounds happier than I would have expected him to given the sad events of a year that saw him move in with a new love and lose the mother of many of his children (which does sound like a Machiavellian pact).

Rather than the guilt of ‘Storytone’ though Neil feels free to write his new wife love songs quite openly for the first real time and as a result there’s a sense of contentment and domesticity that we haven’t heard since 1978’s ‘Comes A Time’. In the middle of this turbulent record made in a hugely turbulent era personally and politically Neil can sing of rainbows and love with an innocence seventy-four-year-olds don’t normally have. Neil pays Darryl her own tributes in the way he once did with wives Pegi, Carrie and Susan, with the line to sum up her take-no-prisoners righteous soul ‘She walked like she knew where she was going’ to match the stability-and-brooms of ‘Harvest Moon’, the lust and confusion of ‘A Man Needs A Maid’ and the awed love songs of ‘Neil Young’ respectively.

Darryl brings light to a world of darkness, a rainbow of colours to an Earth that seems to exist in black-and-white and hope to a life that thought it was over and done already. Darryl is painted here time and again as a fierce fighter who knows her own mind but brings Neil a peace and tranquillity he hasn’t felt for a long time and a fairytale as she waited all those years to be with him without being disappointed in him. This album is very much her album in the same way that ‘Neil Young’ was for Susan, ‘Harvest’ was for Carrie and ‘Comes A Time’ was for Pegi, but naturally for such a known eco-warrior who knows her politics, it’s a record that’s concerned with the outer world as well as the inner world.

One of the big announcements made during the press junket for ‘Colorado’ was that, after fifty years of being a dual citizen, Neil is now officially an American. This is, if he doesn’t mind me saying so, a weird time to do just that. The official line is that Neil ‘got tired of not having a say’ in American politics and fed up of lambasting critics who wondered why he cared so much about Trump if he was Canadian. It is, I fear, a sign of the times. Nobody questioned Neil’s right to write about whomever the hell he wanted when Nixon was in the White House and even as recently as 2008 George Bush Jnr was fair game; it’s only now the Trumpies are in the house that people are as likely to check stranger’s citizenship rights and birth certificate before they check out your record collection. It seems odd, too, that Neil of all people should stoop to caring what the public thought of him just two years after gleefully kicking off ‘The Visitor’ with the line ‘I’m Canadian by the way…’ The politics of what’s happening to the world runs through the veins of ‘Colorado’ in more ways than just the title, even if it’s softer than the Trump pot-shots of the last couple of CDs. For starters, Trump doesn’t get a specific mention this time around though that’s clearly who Neil is aiming at with his tales of biased television reports and angry unthinking supporters.
