Bob Dylan & Neil Young's 1975 Malibu Jams w/ Crazy Horse
Entertainment Tonight on 4-1-86
The never ending saga of Bob Dylan and Neil Young has always been a fascinating tale for us -- as well as -- many of our fellow travelers out there.
Today's guest post by Scott Bunn over on Recliner Notes, analyzes Dylan's song "Shelter from the Storm" and discusses the intersection between the Bob and Neil in Malibu during the 1975 Zuma album sessions.
While Young was recording the album Zuma with the reformed Crazy Horse in June 1975, Malibu Dylan wandered into the recording sessions that were happening at the Zuma Beach house belonging to producer David Briggs. McDonough writes about this encounter:
“Dylan, who lived around the corner from Briggs, shuffled in and joined the Zuma session, first on piano, then guitar.
‘He didn’t talk, just nodded,” said [Crazy Horse guitar player Frank ‘Poncho’ Sampedro]. ‘He was dressed in Sears clothes—I didn’t know it was Bob Dylan’…The action-packed lineup fizzled when the Horse inevitably fell apart. ‘We did a bunch of his songs, never got one right all the way through,’ said Poncho.
‘Neil told me later Dylan said, ‘Your band has a good beat, but they can’t play,’ and Neil replied, ‘Yeah, but think about it, Bob—you could play with them.’”
McDonough writes that Sampedro recalled Dylan leading Neil and Crazy Horse on a group of songs from Blood on the Tracks.
Now that really would be something if Neil ever locates any recordings of those sessions?! Also, a great Jimmy McDonough quote on Crazy Horse playing w/ Bob. priceless.

Sorry all, folks.
I know this is out of theme, but I've ordered Barn through uk greedy hand on october 15, and the cd is still not arrived !!!!!!
I have the HD download, yes, but I want a physical media which I've paid for.
I've received so far few general answers by NY store and warner bros, apparently escalating to uk store. Nothing happened so far and I can't even get a refund.
Can you prop this and help me out?
thanks Roberto
So sorry for your problem with The Greedy Hand. I’ve had issues with the Blue Ray of Barn and they’ve been extremely fast, not only in response but it action as well. Although my problem isn’t resolved yet, they’ve been quick to respond. I’m certain this is due to the fact that I live here in the US. I know Neil has responded to several letters on NYA about working hard to resolve the problems with the UK Greedy Hand store. I got my fingers crossed for my friend. Hopefully you’ll have it soon.
Peace 🙏
I stopped dealing with NYA and Warner bros. Still love the music but what's with all the Bullshit at corporate level to big to fail.
Roberto
Be patient man
I've order Barn vynil and cd + Young Shakespeare and hitchhiker on vynil.
Got all of them on wenesday
@ Roberto - now that's a bummer. No BARN?!
In the parlance of our times: This aggression will not stand,
But seriously, hopefully followup comments will help out and BARN arrives soon. It is a necessary album. Not essential but nothing wrong with necessary.
@ Dan - thanks for lending a helping hand.
@ Unknown - understand the sentiment. Its unfortunate. Not the sentiment, but what seems to be utter disregard for customers.
@ Pat2963 - patience is good ... until it runs out...
On October 20, 2021 I pre-ordered (!) Barn de Luxe and ordered alos a copy of Tuscaloosa and Muddy Track from the US Greedy Hand store. My understanding was that the two other items would be shipped with the Barn de luxe package after the Barn release date December 10, 2021. The UPS tracking service reported that my package arrived at L.A. airport on December 16, 2021. The UPS then lost track of procedures. I received the Barn package today (January 17, 2022) a copy #4811 or so. I do understand that domestic orders are delivered faster and that my order maybe got jammed up in the Christmas avalanche at LAX USPS service, also there might have been pandemic delays. However,I do not understand why I did not get the two other items which I had to pay for the minute I ordered.
Thanks for encouraging and supporting. I knew this is a great Community!
Still no answer today from the incorporated, wtf!
I got Barn at my local record store. ... And there were no issues what so ever.
If you can't get the numbered de luxe edition at your record store and you want to avoid paying that Brexit import duty, that is to say: custom fees for a record manufactured in Germany (EU) but delivered through a store in the UK, you are probably a tad too picky. But I am, I don't do business with brexiteers, not like my in other respects most trusted favourite record store.
Recent reports about trainloads of goods being looted in the L.A. area makes me re-think my strategy though. If the people of Los Angeles can't even get free Covid test kits because of the supply chain problem, I maybe shouldn't order things from there at all.
Life's issues are complicated.
It's me again, though not to report that BARN is arrived.
What is puzzling me the most is that the US shop has already escalated twice to the UK store, or at least this is what I have in my mail.
Escalators aside, I'll wait till w/e and then my CC holder will receive my refund request.
If someone from the Warner Bros highest floor is reading, then he/she'll know already.
Anyway, based on the HD flac BARN is a great album
Roberto
That’s the way to do it
