Comment of the Moment: Freedom of Speech & Thrasher's Wheat

Freedom (1989) by Neil Young -
"The rock and roll coda of the Cold War"

Our Comment of the Moment involves Neil Young's announcement that his Love Earth Tour of Europe will kickoff with a free benefit concert in Ukraine, "Freedom of Speech" and Thrasher's Wheat's comments policy.

As background, some rather heated discussions here on Thrasher's Wheat lately regarding Neil Young's free benefit concert in Ukraine and his wife Daryl Hannah declaring "SLAVA UKRAINE" while presenting an Oscar at the Academy Awards Ceremony on March 2, 2025.

While comments here ranged from "Go Neil!" to "Stupid idea", the battle raged on an open page.

On to our Comment of the Moment on Neil Young's Love Earth Tour of Europe Kickoff in UKRAINE + Freedom of Speech by Dionys (and our response below):
All comparisons are limping somehow, but still I won’t give up on this: „free speech“ may be paramount on this blog and it’s a worthy thing to defend it, like pacifism by the way.

However, there are many situations where “free speech” is not helpful, but harming other people, mostly people who for reasons of self-defense demand unlimited speech to be limited. To demand that victims have just to make use of their right to “free speech” when “free speech” is used as a weapon against them, is blue-eyed and cynical at worst.
(With regards to this also read beyond the famous first paragraphs of Kant’s Essay on “What is Enlightenment?”)

Nobody in a fully seated theatre just can yell out “Fire!” and claiming afterwards to just have exercised his or her right to “free speech”. You do not want to have emergengy room staff discuss your treatment by exchanging various opinions about how to react to the emergency. Ergo: Under existential threats “free speech” is not helpful.

It is agreed, a democracy is based on the free exchange of information and opinion. That’s the position of the 18th century (Kant, French and American Revolutions). The 18th century could neither foresee the modern mass society and their mass media nor the highly accelerating digital technology of the recent decades. It’s questionable to insist on absolute 18th century principles if the framework under which these principles have been developed doesn’t exist anymore and a new framework ist needed. Traffic rules for horse drawn wagons being applied to todays traffic, you get the picture. As the examples above show, also in former times “free speech” never was unlimited, not even in the US. So while the American constitution and its amendmends served their purpose very well for two and a half centuries, it’s about time to rethink a few givens that are not givens any more.

The current behaviour of American corporate media is one issue. Unlike in the past they do not play their paramount role: living, exercising and defending “free speech” (Just look up the pages on NYA relating to that).

Secondly, the undermining of the checks and balance system, the pride of true American patriots, has been so effective that none of the three main institutions remains undamaged, and in the case of the executive and the legislative branch at present they even became dysfunctional.

The other issue comes into focus if you are not sitting behind your (American) garden fence. Recently the vice-president of the not so United States in a statement regarding his reading of “free speech” in Germany met with the representatives of the ultra-right party “Alternative für Deutschland” (AfD) and snubbing all other political parties. He and also the current South African executive governor of the US claimed that there is no real “free speech” in Germany, basically touting lines of the AfD. Needless to say that the AfD follows an agenda which would curtail any “free speech” in Germany. (We have been there before, thanks a lot.) Thanks by the way to wise Americans after 1945 who helped design our constitution, we have been fine with laws who forbid hate speech, racist speech and Nazi language in public. These under our jurisdiction are not covered by “free speech” but fall under instigation of “racial hatred”, a federal crime for which you might get canned or heavily fined for example.

It is obvious that American digital moguls dislike regulation of their activities: with the German and EU majority and their digital legislation projects something like “X” will have to spend a lot of money sanitizing their digital outhouse and will be challenged on many of their deliberately spread falsehoods serving their political and economical agenda. Something that apparently is totally in order under American protection of so-called free speech. No thanks, again. Which brings us to the key problem. In an unique alliance between the current protection racket that figures as the US government’s top level and the magnificent seven digital giants time and again you could see and not just from the outside that their “free speech” ist not yours, Snow White, because you don’t have the money nor the bandwidth to create separate “realities”. So Beanstalk-Jack, if you want to discuss with a cannibal whether he’ll have you for breakfast or maybe not, good luck to you (and your hyper morals).

A special interest place like this blog dedicated to Neil Young, an artist who by his art stringently has sided with what we on both sides of the Atlantic used to call a set of common western values, will have to deal with the fact, that those falsely claiming adherence to these values in order to establish a social-darwinist, authoritarian society are misusing free speech and need to be reigned in. The other options are playing the martyr or being overlooked because of irrelevance.

If George Washington and all those other founding fathers would have been fundamentalists, there never would have been a United States. Luckily these guys were up to their time. So to translate the quote into the 21st century: If we let the freedom of speech be used by the dumb they may silence us, to have us led like sheep to the slaughter.
Just a reminder: a constitution written in stone can’t breathe and it’s not for the living.

A sincere appreciation here Dionys for the time and effort on a subject and human right of utmost importance to all humans on EARTH: The right to free speech.

We could riff on this subject for weeks ...  and we have in the past (see here, here & here.)  We'll also note that the TW comments policy is clearly defined on each comment post prior to composition and publish.  This current TW comments policy has been in place for well over a decade after years of refinement.

So, to our friend we've never seen -- Dionys, a longtime TW reader, supporter and valued commenter, a few thoughts on why Freedom of Speech is paramount here at TW. While we would prefer to focus on the coming re-launch of TW, this allows us the opportunity to try out a few upcoming features.  Bear with us we work out the bugs.

Dionys, you have argued that while free speech is a valuable principle, it is not absolute and can be harmful in certain contexts.

While the risk of unrestricted free speech being weaponized against vulnerable groups is real in the Digital Age, the need for regulation is a more dangerous threat. And no, an unchanging constitution, doesn't stifle progress because of its steadfastness to core values.

A number of counter arguments to consider: The examples of yelling "Fire!" in a theater or emergency room debates are strawmen—free speech has never been absolute. Legal systems, including the U.S. (e.g., Schenck v. United States, 1919), already recognize limits where speech incites imminent harm or violence. The issue isn’t free speech itself but enforcement of existing boundaries, not the creation of new, vague restrictions.

18th-Century Principles Remain Relevant: The core idea of free speech—empowering individuals to challenge power and exchange ideas—transcends its historical origins. Modern mass media and digital technology amplify its reach, not its obsolescence. Adapting traffic rules doesn’t mean abandoning the road; it means refining how we navigate it. Similarly, free speech can evolve without being discarded.

Media and Governance Failures Aren’t Free Speech’s Fault: Corporate media bias and governmental dysfunction reflect failures of execution, not the principle of free expression. Blaming free speech for these issues is like blaming a hammer for a poorly built house—it's the wielders, not the tool. Strengthening accountability (e.g., antitrust laws, transparency) addresses these without curtailing rights.

Risk of Authoritarian Overreach: Dionys warns of free speech enabling authoritarians, yet history shows censorship often empowers them more. Who decides what’s “misused”? Germany’s hate speech laws work because of its context and democratic guardrails; elsewhere, similar rules have silenced dissent (e.g., Turkey, China). Restricting speech to stop “dumb” misuse risks handing authoritarians a playbook.

Free speech remains a cornerstone of human progress and dignity.

It’s the mechanism by which marginalized voices—once slaves, women, workers—toppled oppressive systems, not just in the 18th century but today (e.g., #MeToo, BLM). Digital platforms, for all their flaws, have democratized expression, giving individuals unprecedented power to challenge narratives—like this very blog honoring Neil Young’s defiance through art.

It fosters resilience: societies that grapple with uncomfortable ideas (even falsehoods) develop stronger intellectual immune systems than those shielded by censors. The U.S. Constitution’s adaptability—amended 27 times—proves it can breathe, balancing freedom with responsibility.

Free speech isn’t a relic; it’s a living tool, imperfect but essential, ensuring that neither the powerful nor the “dumb” can monopolize truth

To abandon it risks not just irrelevance, but surrender to the very forces feared.

Comment of the Moment: Neil Young's Love Earth Tour of Europe Kickoff in UKRAINE + Freedom of Speech

"SLAVA UKRAINE"

 (Click photo to enlarge)

Last week, Neil Young announced that his Love Earth Tour of Europe would kickoff with a free benefit concert in Ukraine.

This week, Neil Young's wife Daryl Hannah declared "SLAVA UKRAINE" while presenting an Oscar at the Academy Awards Ceremony on March 2, 2025.

Naturally -- of course -- this provoked both support and outrage amongst the Neil Young fans communities.  See for yourself ... or not.

Which brings us to our Comment of the Moment on Neil Young's Love Earth Tour of Europe Kickoff in UKRAINE by a longtime Thrasher's Wheat reader, supporter and commenter Dionys:
As long as self-taught simpletons and conspirationists are defining history and present events on this blog I am outta here. You may call this "free speech", I call this unrestrained and purposeful political diarrhea.
Sorry for you feel this way Dionys.  As you're well aware, freedom of speech is paramount here at TW.  And we still have trouble understanding Neil fans who don't universally support free speech.  Paradoxically perprlexing.

'If the freedom of speech is taken away then
dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.'
~~ George Washington

Like we said in our comment on this subject: so you go away on sabbatical for a few weeks and come back here and go... maybe time to take another sabbatical?!

But seriously. Does it get anymore serious than love and war?

LOVE AND WAR
by Neil Young

"When I sing about love and war
I don't really know what I'm saying"

(more on LOVE AND WAR: An Open Letter to Neil Young)

The Ukraine free benefit concert seems to be a classic 60s/70s Neil move. Zoom in on the issue of our times and inject self. that's our man

From Kent State & Vietnam, American Dream and Central American rebels, Living with War and Iraq/Gulf war #2, Neil never sat on sidelines. Right or wrong Neil stood and delivered ans was counted and heard.

This is what we do here @ TW. A "safe place" to discuss difficult subjects. Normally, folks are pretty chill on their disagreements.

Like Knowledge Nomad observed in comments, folks such these are rarely to be found on the Internet. We'd like to push back a bit here to say that @ TW, disagreeable debates certainly have a less, violent and vulgar tone. Although we have rec'd a wave of Neil death threats in comments this week. Highly disturbing.

But we carry on for all of our rustie grain friends.

So, as Graham Nash sings in "Chicago":

(We can change) Yes, we can change the world
(Rearrange) Rearrange the world (It's dying)
If you believe in justice (It's dying)
And if you believe in freedom (It's dying)
Let a man live his own life (It's dying)
Rules and regulations, who needs them?
Open up the door

So, express theyself, freedom of speech über alles, etc. Use it or lose it. Say something, submit something. Don't be a sheep, as George Washington warned.  #WT1sWBW4

Remember, Remember the 5th of November: VOTE - Freedom vs Tyranny

"I'm Happy To Report In. Vote Your Conscience."
Neil Young in 2020

Obviously, -- at least so we would like to think -- everyone votes their "Conscience", as Neil Young urged in 2020.

That is voting their conscience for "Freedom" and voting against "Tyranny".

Or, maybe not ... a terrifying realization. Or,  even worse -- those who think they  are voting for "Freedom" but -- in reality -  they're mistakenly actually voting for "Tyranny".  Quite a state of affairs, eh?

As usual, Neil Young has quite a bit to say about Presidents and politics.

Who's Going To Stand Up and Save The Earth?

Many of us were introduced to Mr. Young back in 1970 with the song "Ohio" and the lyrics:

"Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio."

ohio-single-bill-of-rights

Richard Nixon: "Campaigner"
"I am a lonely visitor
I came too late to cause a stir
Though I campaigned all my life towards that goal
I hardly slept the night you wept
Our secret's safe and still well kept
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul
Even Richard Nixon has got Soul"

And Mr Young has not slowed down on the subject of Presidential politics since 1970.

Ronald Reagan

In the 1980's, there were the infamous "Reagan interviews" where -- depending on one's perspective -- either Neil Young was a Ronald Reagan supporter, detractor or undetermined.

From Boston Globe's 1990 Neil Young interview:

Young's been in hot water with certain elements of the press for what's been perceived as his support of Ronald Reagan. Imagine, Neil Young -- the man who wrote that wonderful antiwar, anti-Nixon anthem "Ohio," a longterm environmentalist and activist . . . supporting the most right-wing of presidents.

The neo-Reaganite tag affixed to him during the mid-'80s, Young insists -- quite vehemently -- was taken out of context, blown out of proportion. ''The Reagan-supporting era," sighs Young. "I don't think there is one president that's come down the line that hasn't done something good somewhere." Young says a "sleazeball journalist" nailed Reagan and then forced Young to his defense.

"Some people put down all presidents no matter what," says Young, "like once you get to be president you're a . . . idiot. So if you say anything good about any of them, they think you're supporting everything they do."

Freedom (1989) by Neil Young -
"The rock and roll coda of the Cold War"

In the late 1980's, Neil Young penned the song "Rockin' In The Free World"  lyrics:

"We got a thousand points of light
    For the homeless man
    We got a kinder, gentler,
    Machine gun hand"

The lyrics are a direct reference to President George Bush's (#41) campaign pledge to create a compassionate citizenry volunteering to help cope with society's ills. The "thousand points of light" symbolize the American citizen's spirit and a shining example of giving selflessly to care for one another's neighbor and brother. Along with "a kinder, gentler hand", Bush believed that each American could contribute to helping make the United States -- and the world -- a better place to live and work.

In 2008, the song "Lookin' for a Leader" with lyrics:

"And maybe it's a woman
Or a black man after all"

Referencing Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the official music video was prefaced by: "Every American President has left an impact on his country and the World. This musical history lesson from Neil Young takes a look at the past, present and future of US leadership."

Which brings us to 2016 and Donald Trump & Neil Young...

Donald Trump & Neil Young - 2014

And so began our long running coverage of these two men and their apparent love/hate relationship.

Neil Young's Open Letter To President Trump

‘The Visitor’
by Neil Young + Promise of the Real

In 2017, Neil Young announced his latest new album titled ‘The Visitor’ -- and sharing the 1st preview track of the song “Already Great”.  The song “Already Great” is the response to those complaining about America and the need for it to be "great again".

Also, see:

In 2020, Neil Young was still "Lookin' for a Leader", because "The Times" were a changin'.

JOE BIDEN IS THE GREATEST - Aug 8, 2023

In October 2024, Neil Young endorsed VP Kamala Harris for President, per a statement on Neil Young Archives. Young wrote: "Cast your vote for a beautiful future for your family."

So. From the "tin soldiers and Nixon" in 1970 to "loving" the current Vice President in 2024, Neil has covered the spectrum -- both as a Canadian and a U.S. citizen.

Not that music can change the world or anything like that afterall.

Because one person's perspective on freedom of speech is another's right to dissent.

Sigh. We have all been here before. Sometimes you have to lose to know how to win ... maybe.

Lastly, we bring to you one of the most viral posts in Thrasher's Wheat history: George & John, Donald & Neil + Bob: Sooner or Later, It All Gets REAL ... As in Now.

GEORGE Magazine - 1997; U.S. Citizen Neil Young - 2020

This one has it all rolled into one ... if you dare.  Why? Because the future proves the past.

Alchemy ... Past, Present, Future. We're all on a journey through the past while time fades away.

More on politics and music and  The Politics of Music or the Music of Politics?

Regardless of the results of the 5th of November, remember empathy and try to focus on our common humanity rather than our often trivial differences. And remember peace, of course.

To be honest and transparent here, we're no longer just "Lookin' For A Leader", mainly because "We're The Ones We've Been Waiting For".

"We're The Ones
We've Been Waiting For"

David Crosby and The Damage Done (or Not...)

Classic Rocker Mouths Off At Fan, Gets Dragged For His Trouble | Daily Wire
(Click photo to enlarge)

David Crosby -- yet again -- finds himself in serious blowback over some ill considered remarks. (Thanks Richie C.!)

The short story is that a Croz fan (DJBSackett @DjbSackett·

DJBSackett
@DjbSackett·
Hi @thedavidcrosby hope you are keeping well. Did a picture of you…. Thanks for the music

The fallout has not been kind to David Crosby.

So, the following is an attempt not to re-hash ad infinitum the never ending controversies of CSN & Neil Young , but to simply share something that we were unaware of completely.

Check this clip from 1967 Monterey Pop Festival of The Byrds.

The Byrds - "He Was a Friend of Mine" (Live at 1967 Monterey Pop Festival)

In the above clip, David Crosby makes a very brief statement about the John F. Kennedy assassination and then plays the Byrds song "He Was a Friend of Mine".

David Crosby: “They’re shooting this for television.

I’m sure they’re going to edit this out. I want to say it anyway, even though they will edit it out. When President Kennedy was killed, he was not killed by one man. He was shot from a number of different directions, by different guns.

The story has been suppressed, witnesses have been killed, and this is your country, ladies and gentlemen.”

"He Was A Friend Of Mine"

He was a friend of mine, he was a friend of mine
His killing had no purpose, no reason or rhyme
He was a friend of mine

He was in Dallas town, he was in Dallas town
From a sixth floor window a gunner shot him down
He was in Dallas town

He never knew my name, he never knew my name
Though I never met him I knew him just the same
Oh he was a friend of mine

Leader of a nation for such a precious time
He was a friend of mine

David Crosby: “Thank you. As I say, they will censor it I’m sure. They can’t afford to have things like that on the air. It’d blow their image.”

Due to Crosby’s controversial statement about the JFK assassination,  the Byrds'  Monterey performance was cut from television and film coverage of the festival.  It was this incident and similar circumstances which led to Crosby leaving the Byrds and eventually forming CSN.

But... history has proven that Crosby was right back in 1967 about the JFK assassination, as we know now.

It was -- as Bob Dylan put it recently -- a "Murder Most Foul".

VIEWPOINT: President Of The World

Over the years, Neil Young has been hosting various viewpoints on Times-Contrarian | NYA. The following VIEWPOINT was submitted by Adam Rauch via The Line. VIEWPOINT opinions published here on Thrasher's Wheat do not necessarily imply endorsement.  You know the drill ... Think for Yourself, Question Authority, Make Up Your Own Mind.

President Of The World

via The Line

By Adam Rauch
Feb 28

In December, Neil Young was a guest on the Howard Stern Show. In one of their discussions behind the meaning of his new song ‘Lookin' for a Leader 2020’, Neil proclaimed something to the effect of ‘we don’t need a President of the United States, but rather a President Of The World.’ That really resonated with me.

After watching what is going on in Russia and Ukraine with all that devastation, I truly believe that we DO need a President Of The World to lead a path for all of humanity. The examples set by that leader would HAVE TO resonate across all cultures, races, genders, orientations and backgrounds to eradicate the archaic way we have become separated from each other as humans across continents, in communities, towns and homes alike.

This President Of The World would first have to try to eradicate misguided ANGER. That would be the first step. Whether that be with mindful mediation or yoga or some form of positive energy release, we need to expunge all that ANGER from people across the globe.

The weird thing about ANGER is that it if people took a moment to really sit with it, they would likely discover they aren’t angry at the thing they are taking it out on. You remember the time you screamed at the person who cut you off on the highway or at your kid when they were overly needy?  It isn’t about them. It is about us! The job we hate doing or the life circumstances that we find ourselves in.

For all those school board meetings that end in shouting fights about mask mandates. It isn’t really about the masks people are screaming about.  The mask is just an avenue for all that ANGER and frustration to manifest.

I know it may sound Pollyanna to say Why Can’t We All Just Get Along? But honestly, Why Can’t We All Just Get Along? As I write this, people are getting their lives ruined in Ukraine for disputes over imaginary lines set by people hundreds of years ago - who mind you no one on this Earth has never met before. If we lived forever, I would understand a little more, but we don’t. And if we keep up this pace, we will destroy the entire planet just to say an imaginary line belongs on our side instead of yours.

That is why we need a President Of The World. Someone who talks the talks and walks the walk.  Someone who isn’t getting kickbacks behind-the-scenes while publicly fighting against corporate greed. Not someone who is fighting for women’s rights, all while being a #metoo predator behind closed doors.

We need a real leader to show people how to deal with ANGER and GET ALONG. So let’s nominate a President Of The World to get things started in a better direction. Life would be so much better if we didn’t fight all the time.

Who would you nominate if you could?

©2021 ONE LINE AGENCY.  ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
...

Thank you for submitting your VIEWPOINT here Adam.

So, folks. "Who would you nominate if you could?"

REMINDER: All TW EMail Notification Subscribers: This Diatribe's For You

We've Been Fighting for Freedom of Speech Online for 25 + Years

In our most recent explosive diatribe here at TW, we explained how the latest  abusive insult by Big Tech Giants will impact our email subscribers.

(Incidentally, we're not sure we really understand how some rusties seem to be puzzled by our outrage over the persecution of the operators of this blog for practicing the right to freedom of speech, but that is another matter for another day, because as you know, Rev. Martin Niemoller was right.)

Also, please note again that as part of the ongoing freedom of speech clampdown, if you are expecting a reply email, check your SPAM folder.  Nearly all of our emails are marked as SPAM, unfortunately.  Even after marking our mail as NOT SPAM, some mail services -- especially gmail -- continue to mark as SPAM.

ATTENTION All TW EMail Notification Subscribers: This Note's For You

or

"Facebook is Toast" Say Neil Young

or

Mark Zuckerberg (CEO FACEBOOK): Liar? Idiot? Or Both?

This alert is being issued for awareness to all of our email notification subscribers.

In yet another blow us against our rights to freedom of speech, on approximately July 1, our daily Thrasher's Wheat Neil Young News email notification subscriptions will cease to operate, very sadly.

It took us a very longtime to build our email notification mailing list and it troubles us greatly that yet another TW communications channel is being shutdown in a long running pattern of suppression, discrimination and censorship against this platform and similar independent media voices.

This is when the aimless blades of sciences have slashed the wheaty gates a bit too cruelly ...

Hey Big Tech Giant Brownshirts, we the people, do NOT trust you.

You guys have blocked us, shadow banned us, de-monetized us, de-platformed us, memory-holed us, and harassed/trolled us relentlessly.

But all of your puny, petty and tired efforts have failed thus far -- we're still standing after 25 years. Stronger and more committed than ever in this battle.

So enough.

"YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature,
 and YOU WILL ATONE!!!"

Eyes Wide Shut, Mouth Closed

"They" (TPTB) have tried to take us down by canceling our advertising partnerships, or blocking our ability to run Google Ads, or hacking our Twitter account, or filing fraudulent transactions on our PayPal account, or disrupting the ISP service of our partner WBKM.org and Thrasher's Wheat Radio, or screwing around with our Amazon partner links, or jerking us around about Willie for a Nobel, capping our LIKES below 30K and unsub'g folks automatically, throttled our once robust reader comments eco-system suspending the Gigs for the Gulf page based on false copyright infringement claims, trying to make exposing environmental crimes a crime, disrupting freedom of speech and assembly, or humiliating and mocking our efforts when we try and stand up, algorithmic censorship to lower our rank off of Top 10 Search results or gaslighting us with "fake Neil news", sending in all sorts of trolls and spammers to disrupt the Neil community, or making exposing a war crime a war crime or blasting us with near Stuxnet-like levels of crippling attacks on our servers, dropped from Google News as a legitimate (non-fake) news source, blocked folks from dropping blog comments, directed TW private email comms into SPAM folders, and on & on...

Also, please note that as part of the ongoing clampdown, if you are expecting a reply email to check your SPAM folder as nearly all of our emails are marked as SPAM, unfortunately.

Also, please note that the RSS Feed @  Subscribe to Thrasher's Wheat Neil Young News RSS Feed should still continue to operate.

And we we will never forget those who stood with us and those who did not. Trust us.Because when the that day of full truth, disclosure and reconcilation comes, it will be clearly apparent to all that "The Big Shift" (#BigShift) has arrived.

And not to put too fine a point on all of this, we were canceled long before cancel culture took hold of the collective psyche.  May they reap what they have sown.

"First they came for Thrasher's Wheat,
and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Neil Young fan.

Then they came for
David Icke, & Aaron Swartz (#AaronDidntKillHimselfEither),
and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a white male conspiracy theorist or a cyber warrior crusading for justice & freedom.

Then they came for Oprah Winfrey & Beyonce,
and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a black female social justice warrior.

Then they came for Neil Young,
and I didn’t speak up, because I was Donald Trump voter.

Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."
MODIFIED ~~ Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1945

We first published these original words by Rev. Martin Niemoller here on Thrasher's Wheat on September 27, 2011 -- about a decade ago. And we insert the profound words of Rev. Martin Niemoller into our postings from time to time

And it's been over 75 years since the quote originated during a very dark time in history.  A history that we repeat again, where many remain silent and afraid to speak their truths.

So how much longer will this continue all of you communists, jews, trade unionists, and catholics out there? [NOTE: Before going insane here, those are the exact groups originally cited by Rev. Niemoller in 1945.]

Again, how's that identity politics thing working out for you these days, eh?

Because, remember, like Rev. Niemoller, we will NEVER forget those who stood with us and those who did not. Trust us.

Because, "The role of the artist is to make [r]evolution irresistible."

peace & love,

"RUST BUCKET" DVD Audio Issues: Neil Young Owns It and Steps Up - UPDATED

RUST BUCKET DVD AUDIO? | T-C | NYA

Neil Young is stepping up on the issue regarding the DVD audio on ‘Way Down in the Rust Bucket’. (Thanks Harm & Road Dawg!)

As background, a TW reader commented back in February on the audio concerns on the DVD versus the CD, LP or hi-res files. The TW commenter -- Mr. Harm -- then followed up directly with NYA with a Letter to Editor to which Neil Young personally responds.

Neil Young's response is noteworthy in its transparency, honesty, accountability, and integrity.

From RUST BUCKET DVD AUDIO? | T-C | NYA:

Hi Neil,
First of all, my compliments on the sound of Way Down in the Rust Bucket, the Hi-Res sounds awesome and of course it's a killer show, ragged but right!
However, the sound differs greatly from the video that's in the Hearse Theatre and the DVD, which seems to have a much narrower stereo image and more low end compared to the CD and Hi-Res. When the videos were previewed weekly last year they did have the wider stereo image. What happened?
Best regards,
Harm (from the Netherlands).

Dear Harm
I know what happen
ed.

I thought you were listening on NYA to the live production sound of the RUST BUCKET at Catalyst - ie camera mics and PA leakage - a very exciting and rough sound. Then we (J Hanlon) mixed the master multi-track for the record that many folks love. When we tried the record mix for the DVD, I thought it was too smooth and not live enough like the NYA presentation was. At that point we did some customized mastering to the record mix to make it sound more like the live camera audio I thought you were hearing on NYA. That was my BIG mistake. On NYA, you were actually hearing the real J Hanlon master mixes we did for the album, except at a lower resolution.

This whole thing was my error. I own it. I was working alone at the time and did not have a full audio team to advise me. One of them would have pointed out to me that the mixes people loved on NYA were the record masters at a lower resolution (because we needed lower res to stream easily). - NOT the camera audio I thought you were hearing on NYA. My bad.

So, I agree with you! The sound on the DVD is not as good as it should be or could have been.

If you write us back and give us an address and a pic of your DVD we will send you a new free version with the NYA sound you love on it. We are making a special edition of Rust Bucket with that great audio track for folks like you who heard it here and loved it. It will be ready well within a month.

The original DVDs we had made for NYA are here now, but they have the problem. Crunch. That’s NYA eating them!!!! DANG

It actually makes me quite happy that you have that love for the original sound of J Hanlon’s mix!. It gives us faith! Thanks for caring! Write us back and give us an address and a pic. We will send you the quality you deserve.

We are now investigating the Return to Greendale DVDs.

love
be well
Neil

Thanks Harm & Neil!

As we mentioned above, Neil's ownership here is inspiring.

Neil  Steps Up and Owns It

To step up -- man up -- own the problem and the solution is the definition of leadership. Not to veer too far here, but why are we finding leadership in a musician?!

While we're not looking for a Leader (b/c #WT1sWBW4), we can only wish that others in positions of leadership and authority would also fully own their mistakes and take personal steps to address. The lack of full, personal accountability in our societies is what is really, truly deplorable.
