Geoff writes us:
These two kids - Nate & Karen - your tie-dyers, are about to get married so they asked me to make some photos of them today. Thus I was able to get this shot of the three of us for you.

Side note, they are not related to the tie-dye store we are in front of, but Joey the guy who owns it is the head who is in the Dead family and “died" for them in the 90s. And Nate learned from him, and Karen from him. “Jamin’ on Maui” is the sister store to "Jammin' on Haight"… you know where that neighborhood is I’m sure. But the funnier thing is the note on the store window.

Classic Maui style brah.

Also, if you recently ordered a shirt on the 2nd round of Thrasher's Wheat 20th Anniversary Shirts, here is the latest update. The order has been compiled and submitted to Geoff & his shirt folks out in Hawaii. Shirts have been ordered and die tying is commencing. It will take a few weeks to complete the printing and dying process. The shipment to TW HQ and then back out to you good folks. So hopefully we'll have these out to folks in August.

Neil Young & Promise Of The Real's Europe 2016 Concert Tour ended this weekend at a castle in Austria -- cut short by thunder and lightening -- a fitting conclusion for a tour supporting an album titled EARTH, which opens with... thunder and rain.

8 Weeks, 26 Shows, 17 Countries.

Neil Young is on the cover of the new issue of Uncut magazine, dated August 2016 and thanks to the good folks there, we have a few copies to giveaway in a contest. Details below.

Young is on the cover, and inside he discusses his time on the planet, his new live album Earth and his future. “I don’t guarantee anything,” he tells Uncut's Jaan Uhelszki in Malibu Canyon.

Meanwhile, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Promise Of The Real pass judgement on the current state of their capricious friend. “Where do I think Neil is at this point in his life?” says Lukas Nelson. “I think this is where the space ship is taking off in ‘After The Gold Rush’.”

“I’m the same as I was,” says Young. “I know what I want and I won’t accept less… I still do see the vista. I feel good. That’s my way of knowing that I can still continue. There’s no reason to not continue, because I can still see where I’m going. Can’t see it clearly, but I know it’s out there.”

Neil Young has discussed the future of Crazy Horse in an exclusive interview in the new issue of Uncut, out now and available in shops and digitally.

In the feature, the songwriter, who released a new live album Earth last week – read Uncut Magazine review here – explains that his oldest group are still a going concern.

“Crazy Horse is still out there,” he explains. “There still is a Crazy Horse. Billy [Talbot] is doing great. Playing with them? That’s in the future, we’re all lucky.”

Currently, Young is performing with Promise Of The Real. “They’re an unbelievable band,” he enthuses. “They go as far as I want to go. They don’t have to be taught anything. They already know it. They know the same things I know, they speak the same language. They are the real deal.”

Discussing ‘making peace’ with the tragic death of early Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten in 1972, Young denies that, for him, the loss is resolved.

“I don’t have to make peace with anything,” he says. “Danny’s unresolved. Such a great waste. Sad. But not resolved. Everybody has ghosts like that. It’s part of life. It’s ok. Just have to let them be. Some things you can’t change. You don’t want to try to change, but they’re everywhere. There’s no escaping them.”

Also in the extensive cover interview, Young discusses his live album Earth, the future of his music and the state of the planet, while old friends and collaborators including Stephen Stills and Graham Nash pass judgement on the current state of Young.

Comment of the Moment: Promise Of The Real & Crazy Horse - Never Say Never with Neil Young

The TW Comment of the Moment is from Neil Young & Promise Of The Real concert at July 20 - Germany, Leipzig, Völkerschlachtdenkmal Open Air by the intrepid Scotsman:
For me, any one of Neil's bands that doesn't feature Poncho Sampedro is going to be somewhere short of 100%. Kind of like seeing the Rolling Stones without both Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. It's the combination of the two that is exciting; the chemistry.

I think Neil needs that massive punchy rhythm sound; his own lead playing falls a little flat without it. It flies, but it doesn't soar. The chemistry between Neil and Poncho's guitars (and their personalities) is world-class, and quite unique. Magic. That's what people pay to witness.

That said, POTR have a sound very different to Crazy Horse, as is evidenced on Earth. And that's why they succeed: they play by a different set of rules. Trying to out-Crazy Horse Crazy Horse can only lead to disappointment. If anything, the three-guitar combination of POTR seems a little forced; at any one time, one of the guitars is almost always redundant. 'More' is not equal to 'better'.

Worth noting too that Neil's most exciting bands have rarely been the most versatile. Crazy Horse, The Blue Notes, Lost Dogs, International Harvesters etc all had a particular niche of music they specialised in. Whereas the jack-of-all-trades bands like "Friends and Relatives" and the Trans Band were fairly dull, to be quite honest. The spark wasn't there. Self-imposed restrictions have almost always made Neil's music more powerful.

Nowadays the weak link in Crazy Horse tends to be Ralph. He's still good, but he's less reliable than he once was. Whereas Poncho still has it nailed. He's still razor sharp. Billy is unpredictable as always, which is part of what makes him great. There's a thrill to seeing Crazy Horse that isn't there with any other band. They walk a tightrope.

I think we will see another collobaration with members of CH within the next couple of years. Regardless, their legacy is established. You only have to put on a random bootleg from 1991 or 1996 to hear just how world-class they really were. Everything else sounds like mickey mouse in comparison, really. And the wonderful thing about music is that it retains it's power. The version of Like A Hurricane from L.A 1991 still gives me chills every time I hear it. Put on a bootleg from Old Princeton Landing and it might as well be happening now. Age hasn't diluted it at all. How wonderful.

CONFIRMED NEW DATES: Neil Young + POTR - Telluride, Colorado, 9/30 & 10/1

Earlier this year we posted on a potential Neil Young + Promise Of The Real concert in Telluride, Colorado this Fall (Bringing Neil Young to A Town in Colorado: Telluride Town Council Holds Hearing on Concert ).

Apparently, bringing Neil to a relatively small town in the high altitude ski area of the Rockies necessitated the Telluride Town Council to hold hearings.

Now comes word that an approval has been received and dates are confirmed for 9/30 & 10/1.

These concerts are warm ups for the big Desert Trip Festival in October when Neil Young + Promise Of The Real will open for Paul McCartney.

Take The "E" Train with Neil Young's EARTH Album

Neil Young's new album EARTH will soon be riding the rails on New York City's subway.

From July 15 - 31, the "S" shuttle train will have an eco-centric installation called the Earth Train. The train is wrapped in various Earth images—trees, water, clouds, etc.—and filled with facts that Young wants to share with riders.

Between Noon and 3 p.m. Friday, TIDAL members that stop by the "S" train platform at Grand Central can pick up a complementary round-trip MetroCard. All attendees will also receive a 3-month membership voucher courtesy of TIDAL and Young.

From Amsterdam, Netherlands comments by ORL-Fixation:
Here goes fellow Wheaties, the videos I shot from this legendary show. I tried to enjoy myself as much as possible, thus the lack of footage of the epic guitar workouts. Also please pardon some of the shakeyness (people doing beer/bathroom runs), and the moments of shoddy zooming and focus from my rusting old man of digital camera. I filmed Don't Be Denied for my father who I owe my Neil love to. Won't forget getting stoned and listening to Time Fades Away with him for the first time; wish he coulda been there for this show.

Some things I'd like to add:

Neil is a goddamn force of nature. I really left inspired. I took my roommate to the show; she was only slightly familiar with Neil / his catalog, and Mother Earth brought her to tears (which had been welling up from the beginning of the acoustic set). About the rest of the show, her words: "I was mesmerized" "I could not stop looking at his eyes. So intense."

For me, hearing Words, Hold Back the Tears, and Don't Be Denied were all dreams come true. Change Your Mind was delicious icing as was the extra love given to Ragged Glory with both Love To Burn and Love & Only Love being played.

Regarding PotR, it's obvious they've breathed new life into Neil's performances. THANK YOU. The boys are so joyful, humble, and clearly appreciative of the crowd, they play together really beautifully and with such comfort, they nailed all the harmonies and backing vocals (that Powderfinger everyone - come on!) and I'm all about their bassist Corey. To be nit picky, though, when they tread the footsteps of some of the giants before them, I couldn't help but feel a tad underwhelmed: On Out On The Weekend I sorely missed Ben Keith's pedal steel despite Lukas/Micah's best efforts to add in his Ben's pastoral texture, and on Revolution Blues, Anthony's drumming just didn't pack the punch that Levon delivered. (Corey was dank as Danko though.)

That said, nothing is nicer than seeing Neil smiling so genuinely at the conclusion of song after song. You can see he is reaping great pleasure from bringing the boys under his wing. I also think they were phenomenal when Neil would take took off sonic-ly, wailing on Old Black; the Real were not by any means left in the dust, and they not only kept in step, but even added new dimensions to the jams. My sense is that they will all just keep getting better and better as a group.

Final thoughts: I haven't heard Monsanto Years, but I've read up on the different ways fans have received it. The lyricism may not be Neil-level poetry, but it's clear that the album's topic/themes has reignited a fire in Neil. When he proclaimed "I Won't Quit!" during Seeds I was genuinely jolted. He was a man possessed, frightening and with bloodlust in his eyes. That was my take home feeling. No matter his age: He. Will. Not. Quit. No matter the adversity. It doesn't get more inspiring to me, folks.

Keep on rockin FOR the free world...

The most recent concert of Neil Young + Promise of the Real in Amsterdam on July 9, 2016 , seems to be a high water mark of not only the tour thus far, but possibly of Neil's entire 42 year career.

It was without doubt an epic night in Amsterdam by all accounts. 26 songs. 15 different albums represented. 3.5 hours. 2 song encore. and so on.

This was the longest concert of the current Rebel Content tour and apparently the longest Neil Young concert in his career. "Don't Be Denied" and "Change Your Mind" were played for the first time on the European Tour. The total number of different songs of the Tour now up to 57 per Sugar Mountain's Chronological Grid. Also, two song encore: "Like An Inca" & "Here We Are In The Years".

That’s how it felt to be at the Amsterdam show of Neil Young and POTR. It was a phenomenal performance, with many surprises, a tremendous atmosphere, fabulous bandwork, and an amazing setlist. Three and a half hours of craftmanship, powerhouse rock and marvelous ventures into the deep catalogue left the audience in awe, exhausted, and immensely thankful.

The venue, Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome, was about sold-out; there was a brisk trade in left-over tickets on the internet. The pitch was full, and almost all seats in the theatre were filled. The crowd was a fairly mixed lot – I’ve seen tweets mentioning a deluge of 60-olds, but the people in my range of observation were mostly mid or late 40-ish, not just wheelchair hippies or the curious youngsters coming to have a dinosaur experience, but knowledgeable fans. The dress code was as you would expect: extremely unfashionable. Few lumberjack shirt though. The sound in the venue was amazingly good, very clear and warm.


After the silly farce of the sowing girls, Neil started with his standard set of acoustic biggies. The first notes of After the Gold Rush were electric. It surprised me how much feeling NY still can put into these songs, which he has played hundreds of times. I never understood NY’s urge to repeat these worn-out songs. But they were not stale: they rang soulful and true. Proof of the vibe NY succeeds in putting into his old songs. Even Heart of Gold, never a favourite, sounded great. The first surprise came early: #4 in his setlist was Razor Love, a vulnerable song of great beauty (only played once before in the Netherlands).

Compared to some other tours in the past, NY kept his solo acoustic set short. A pity, maybe, but it shows how eager he is to bring out his band, to show its versatility, and delve into the extensive song catalogue. Indeed, Promise of the Real can almost do anything; they’re like wax in the master’s hands. He trained them, trimmed them, and let them shine.


The country-rock songs of the second part of the set fit POTR as a glove. A great surprise was Hold Back the Tears, which I never heard before live, and indeed has been seldom played. It’s pure country music, and the Promise did it well (but oh, how much Ben Keith’s pedal steel is missed here; Lukas Nelson’s attempt to imitate its sound was extremely well done, but remained an imitation). Following that were some of the standards of this tour, Human Highway, Someday (!), a memorable Words, and great renderings of Winterlong and Alabama. POTR is giving those songs a bit of a jumpy bite. By the way, it seems to me that Micah Nelson is closest to this kind of repertoire. I had the feeling – for what it’s worth – that the other members were looking forward to get to rockier shores.

Love to Burn opened the Old Black set and was one of the highlights of the evening. I was never extremely fond of the song, like many songs of Ragged Glory that tend to sluggishness, but this version came with a vengeance. POTR gave it much more swing. Lukas Nelson’s part was remarkable: with his quasi-soloing, partly in Q&A with NY, he gave the song a funky syncopation that turned this guitar sludge into a dance party. Unfortunately this did not happen with other Ragged Glory classics – Mansion on the Hill and Love and Only Love, which sounded slightly uninspired and may better be left to Crazy Horse. POTR demonstrated that they can do straight stadium rock too, with great versions of the Crazy Horse evergreens Rockin’ in the Free World and Powderfinger.

Fascinating were rarities from Sleeps with Angels: Change your Mind and a beautiful Western Hero. Out of darker days came Don’t be Denied and Revolution Blues. What to say. It was a privilege to hear them both in this concert. Don’t be Denied was soaring, as it should. Revolution Blues was an absolute pinnacle. What a prodigious interpretation of one of NY’s greatest songs.


The encores were not entirely successful to my taste, perhaps because of their adventurousness (what a silly criticism, but maybe you get the meaning). Like an Inca was another great find from the deep catalogue but had too little variation and pungency as a closer, and NY tried to sound angry, but his voice was strained and shrill. Here We Are in the Years came as an immense surprise, and it is courageous to have it at the end of the show, but its subtlety makes the song fit better in the early part of the show.

Let’s not nitpick. This was a great great concert, adventurous, masterly and rewarding. As has been remarked before: Neil Young’s voice shows only little wear from age. His many mistakes are forgiven; they are part of his attitude. He is not a crowd pleaser. He does not reach out to you but draws you into his amazing musical world.


Neil Young in 2016 is about Promise of the Real: they are his backbone, his two feet, his home, as much as Crazy Horse was, but differently: while Crazy Horse offered a basis of concrete, hard-boiled rock, the Promise is a rubber base, moveable and spongy but offering better stability during earthquakes. POTR are a supple team that is able to follow most of NY’s many stylistic turns in his oeuvre. Hagiographic or star-centred rock journalism always suggests that Neil Young makes his bands, that he is the domineering figure. That is only partly true: he is heavily influenced by his musicians, and listens carefully to them.

Although the Nelson brothers are in the limelight of press attention, the band actually centres around the rhythm section, Anthony LoGerfo on drums and Corey McCormick on bass. Together they can produce a steamroller cadence, a bouncy-ball pulse that gives NY’s music a new twist, very masculine too but funky and agile. This was in evidence in great renderings of Alabama, Seed Justice, Love to Burn and Revolution Blues, and many others. LoGerfo has a nice roll that brings swing to NY’s sound, much more than the chopping style of Ralph Molina. Corey McCormick remains for me the pumping heart of this band (no wonder NY keeps him close during the concert; they seem to have the most rapport), and the essential figure that brings the necessary funkiness to NY’s rock, which over the last 25 years tended to bog down a bit. Add to this the conga’s of Tato Melgar: they bring some smoothness and support the bounciness of the LoGerfo and McCormick.


The evolution of Lukas Nelson over the last year has been the most remarkable. A great artist in his own right, his role is the most difficult: his talent, and his ambition, who knows, had to be domesticated. As others have remarked here: the less notes he plays, the better he fits the music. Sometimes he did not play at all, at times he just added some sparse notes. Interestingly NY gave him much room, and did not indulge in endless soloing of his own. I must confess that at times I missed Frank Sampedro’s guitar groundwork. Besides, I do not like Lukas Nelson’s guitar sound, and his blues style does not fit all songs, to my taste. Micah Nelson brings a bit of irony and madness, which always has been part of NY, but was a bit neglected or heavy-set in the CH ambiance. It crucially adds a new dimension.


It is easy to understand Neil Young’s love for this band.

They rejuvenate him and urge him to revisit and explore the wide expansion of his own music. A courageous thing to do at 70. This demonstration of musical mastery left the audience completely knocked out.

What a great performance, one of the best I’ve heard and witnessed.

Epic night in Amsterdam. 26 songs, three and a half hours, the longest concert of the current tour and the longest Neil Young concert in 42 year career. "Don't Be Denied" and "Change Your Mind" first time on the European Tour. The total number of different songs of the Tour now up to 57 per Sugar Mountain's Chronological Grid. Also, two song encore: "Like An Inca" & "Here We Are In The Years".

I normally don't do this but Neil Young is playing his balls off here. Wowzers times 10!!!

Yes, It's Still An Angry World So Where Do We Go Now Neil Young?

We posted this way back in 2013 and it still seems appropriate in light of recent developments -- sadly.

The photo is the marquee at the Charles Theater in Baltimore, MD in December 2012 when the Neil Young film Journeys was playing. Another film being featured is titled "Where Do We Go Now". (Thanks Stacey B.!)

The original 2013 posting was made in response to fans reaction to the cancellation of the Crazy Horse tour dues to Poncho's hand injury. To say we were apalled by the insensitivity of some our fellow fans is an understatement. As both Billy Talbot & Ralph Molina have written, Crazy Horse is a team, a unit, a band of brothers.

So, when asking "Where Do We Go Now?", consider that when Poncho injures his hand, it's almost like Neil has injured his own hand. He can't play a Crazy Horse show without the whole team.

Likewise today. We're all on the big human planet team and we'd all better get along or we all go down together.

We are not helpless. Remember, Fear Not! We'll Always Have Paris. Forever. Actually, there is nothing to fear. It's just Winterlong ... It's all an illusion. (Yeah, yeah, it's all just one big giant conspiracy right, Thrasher? Well, maybe it really is so.) So wake up while you still can and turn off the TeeVee. Find the cost of freedom -- it's expensive but worth it.

What we saw back in 2013 left us shaking our heads in our little microcosm rustie world -- which is merely a reflection of that larger angry world. But if we can deal with our anger at the local level, then there's a chance for the big world wide web of life.

But even more disturbing for us is the amount of near rage and hatred that some are expressing in various forums over a concert cancellation. We say this because if only this outrage and energy could be channeled into some truly consequential matters like say war, environment or poverty to name a few.

Seriously. Do folks who have acted like they have experienced a massive injustice take the same approach with their local elected officials whenever they feel wronged? Let's hope so. So channel all that rage towards something useful where you can actually make a difference. All change is local. Don't get all swept up in this global cataclysm seemingly unraveling before your eyes. It's always darkest before the dawn -- and we're almost to a glorious sun rise.

It's an "Angry World", indeed.

"They [ Promise Of The Real] have no fear. They're much better players than I am. Lukas is like a gunslinger, and Micah is very ethereal and spaced. So they're completely different, and I'm somewhere in between.

“Razor Love” was added to five-song solo acoustic set. Debuted in 1984 and released in 2000 on Silver & Gold. Young last played “Razor Love” 13 years ago on May 23, 2003 in Antwerpen, Belgium per Sugar Mountain. “Razor Love” has been performed in concert 61 times. The first live performance was 1984-06-18, Late Show, Country Club, Reseda, California, USA. (Thanks Sugar Mountain!)

Neil Young's Archives Volume #2: A High-Res Website

It's been a very, very long time since we posted an update on Neil Young's Archives -- over 2 years ago, in fact.

Back in March 2014, in response, to questions about whether NYA#2 might be a PONO release, Archives Guy said in a comment here on TW:
Not to distract from the subject of this post, but in answering the NYA V2 questions...

At this time we are still planning on physical release for NYA V2 and yes it will be available on Pono, too in full 24/192 sound quality. I'm happy to report that we are in full on production of NYA V2 right now. Maybe I'm biased, but I think V2 might be the best one. A plethora of previously unreleased tracks.

Dunno if anyone noticed it yet, but there are some new Artist Signature Series Pono players up on the Kickstarter page today.
The previous update on the Archives was 4 years earlier in 2010 as part of the NYA Special Release Series.

Now comes the latest on the oh-so elusive Neil Young's Archives Volume #2 from Rolling Stone by Patrick Doyle:
After he wraps his current tour in October, Young will continue work on Archives II, the follow-up to 2009's Archives, which collected unreleased material up to 1972. Young says the project will include Dume, an album of songs from the Zuma era, and Hitchhiker, an acoustic LP from the mid-Seventies. The major holdup has been developing technology for presenting the ambitious project: "We're gonna have a website that's, like, 60 years of music in chronological order, with links so you can look at my archives and play the music off the high-res source at the same time." So what's it like to reflect on all he's accomplished over the years? "I don't," he says. "I need to take a break and go to the bathroom."
From a Neil Young interview in UNCUT:
“I’m putting a website out, probably just before Christmas,” he told us. “It’ll be my entire archives on a website. You can listen to music, and you’ll see where albums are that are penciled in, not finished. From throughout a 40 or 50-year span, you’ll see unfinished records behind you, in front of you, right now, way in the future.”
And there you have it.

So Dume?! Not too much known about that album. The song "Hitchhiker" was eventually released on Le Noise back in 2010.

Then there's always the legendary Homegrown unreleased Neil Young Album.

Neil Young has added new lyrics to the song "Rockin In The Free World" during his current tour of Europe with Promise of the Real.

In the above video from the Antwerp, Belgium concert on June 24, 2016 , the new lyrics can be heard at ~3:30. (Thanks Hounds That Howell for heads up! These new lyrics can also be heard 2 years ago at the Colmar, France concert on 08.08.2014.)

A rather harsh update for a song already dripping with irony, sarcasm and venom for what the modern world has wrought.

Over the years, we've written quite extensively how Neil Young's song “Rockin’ in the Free World” has been used and abused for a variety of purposes. In an in-depth look at the irony and aftermath of RITFW from The Umpteenth Times by Kevin Egan:
To borrow a phrase from the mathematicians, people seem to enjoy things broken down to it’s lowest common denominator. In the case of “Rockin’ in the Free World,” Young experiences what Springsteen has with “Born in the USA,” which is an audience clueless to the ideas expressed in his song.

The masses only seem to recall the chorus to this song, when the chorus is only a summing up of what the verses had articulated with more specific concepts and detailed images. It’s quite possible that Young may have been inspired by Springsteen (Springsteen’s song was written years before Young’s) when he created his own “anti-anthem,” a song in which a chorus is sung ironically, juxtaposed against gloomy, hopeless lyrics.

Though some may argue differently, this is far from an elitist tactic, particularly since both Young and Springsteen sing their verses quite clearly and include the lyrics to the songs on their albums. The information is there for the listener to absorb if they are interested. Unfortunately, in both these cases, many people still don’t get the joke and they ultimately and sadly become part of the joke. They sing proudly and patriotically to these “anti-anthems” that point out the hardships and inequalities of a system and government that has failed their people. It is only to those who have been listening attentively that the irony of these pieces comes across clearly enough.

Tomorrow, 240 year ago -- July the 4th, 1776 -- the thirteen American colonies declared independence from Great Britain and announced they would no longer be a part of the British Empire.

Written by Thomas Jefferson, the American Declaration of Independence is now seen as a universal human rights statement:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

And on January 1st of this year, we wrote about Freedom in a New Year, which has been viewed -- in hindsight -- as somewhat prophetic for the events that would soon unfold.

Neil Young's album Freedom -- which was released in 1989 just as the Berlin Wall fell -- has been called "the rock and roll coda of the Cold War".

The album contains the song "Rockin' In The Free World" and is one of Young's most popular, important and prophetic songs of his vast catalog.

The song has become an iconic anthem and it's status continues to rise as more and more artists cover the song. Young's lyrics are considered to be an indictment of the politics of the 1980's. In today's post-9/11 world, the lyrics seem prophetic and even more meaningful than when originally written on the eve of the '90's as the Berlin Wall fell.

Twenty years on, the song "Rockin' In The Free World" has become an encore finale for bands around the world, as well as, a coda for the days that used to be.

So. Freedom ... Is It All Really Just An Illusion Now?

Neil Young's new album with Crazy Horse has definitely struck a chord which is resonating not only across Americana but the Old World as well.

The songs on Americana reinterpret traditional folk songs in such a way as to breath new life and meaning into them to such an extent as to be almost unrecognizable to those who learned the songs in their childhood. And that makes some uncomfortable to go where they haven't been before.

For example, in the traditional song “Oh Susannah”, the music is a family focal point to provide relief from the grim times of the Great Depression. Those who fail to draw the line between yesterday and today's global meltdown are missing the major message of Americana . The "Even Greater Depression" of the early 21st century is the story of our lifetime. To miss this point is to fail incredibly.

Even the artwork of Shepard Fairey and Day at the Gallery where the images project populist ideals of the common man against the brutality of the state sponsored repression and economic bondage.

For Neil Young's “God Save the Queen,” the British anthem that was repurposed for “America (My Country, ’Tis of Thee)”; this version moves from British fealty to “Confound their politics/Frustrate their empty tricks” to a final chorus of “Let freedom ring.”

Addressing the American Newspaper Publishers Association at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City on April 27, 1961, U.S. President John F. Kennedy said at the peak of the Cold War's Cuban Missile Crisis:
"The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it."

That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know."

And that is why our press was protected by the First Amendment-- the only business in America specifically protected by the Constitution -- not primarily to amuse and entertain, not to emphasize the trivial and the sentimental, not to simply "give the public what it wants" -- but to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to state our dangers and our opportunities, to indicate our crises and our choices, to lead, mold, educate and sometimes even anger public opinion."

Yet the song "Rockin' In The Free World" is often misunderstood and attacked on false interpretations and misplaced understandings. Witness some of the near violent comments that have been left on this blog over the years in reaction to some of our previous postings on the song's lyrical analysis (see comments here and here.)

There are those who have argued that "Rockin' in the Free World" espouses anti-freedom ideals, to which we have taken serious issue with in the past.

As always, we live in dangerous times where those who stand for freedom are often accused of treason and worse. Such times are now and the struggle for freedom -- even among those who feel they are actually free -- is more paramount than ever. The right to live and speak freely is an inalienably human right that can never be assumed nor taken for granted.

So, what does it all mean? A comment on Freedom in a New Year:
You need only understand the true context of George Bush’s “thousand points of light” reference. It has nothing to do with a call to civic and charitable involvement. Rather, it is a reference to Illuminism, an encoded esoteric call to arms signaling to all the wreckers throughout the world that the time has come to declare out in the open (in George Bush’s own words), a “New World Order”.

In the United States more and more recognize the disconnect between government and the needs of most Americans. They see how crony capitalist policies lead to the largest wealth divide we have known with increasing poverty, joblessness, underemployment and insecurity. At the same time the Congress, Treasury and Federal Reserve funnel trillions of dollars to the big banks, but demand cuts for programs that would create jobs, fund state and local government, build the infrastructure, provide basic necessities and protect the environment. This is the first generation of Americans who see that their children are likely to be worse off than they are.

So. The American Dream. How could something so good, go bad, so fast?

Say what you will about Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young's 1988 album American Dream, but it did contain some quite lacerating and scathing commentary on the state of the American Dream.

The video is clearly an indictment of the rampant corruption of the U.S. President Ronald Reagan's administration and the Iran-Contra coverup scandal where high ranking government officials secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, which had been specifically prohibited by Congress (The Boland Amendment).

And here we are 23 years later. My how things have changed for that American Dream...
