Album Review: Neil Young - "Americana" - Premier Guitar

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
(Click photo to enlarge)

An album review of "Americana" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse from Premier Guitar by Charles Saufley:
Complain all you want that Neil Young—easily one of the 10 greatest songwriters of the rock ’n’ roll era—hasn’t written a classic album in years. But to define late-model Young via the recorded output of the last decade is to ignore guitar and vocal performances as incendiary, confrontational, and irreverent as ever. On Americana, Young frees himself from the constraints of original material, focusing instead on the textures and raw, adrenal possibilities of his greatest band, Crazy Horse, and a fistful of American folk standards. Like so much that Young does, the concept borders on the perverse, which is precisely why it’s such a kick in the ass.

Those looking for technical sorcery and smooth production need not read further. This is Neil and the Horse at their crustiest. But it’s more than Neil’s production nihilism and antipathy toward slickness that makes this record remarkable. Young and Co. approach and reinterpret these songs with arrangements that are often revelations. Take the schoolhouse classic, “Oh Susannah,” which becomes a funky and chugging minor-key stomp rivaling the barbarism of Neil’s old ’66 Sunset Strip, fuzz-punk compatriots The Seeds. The miner tragedy, “Clementine,” is pervaded with darkness and desperation that conjures images of the protagonist as a grimy mechanic mourning the drowning of his love—“Down by the River” revisited, perhaps? Meanwhile, the classic Carolina murder ballad of Tom Dula (aka “Tom Dooley”)—blunted in the popular imagination by the Kingston Trio’s polite banjo version—is rendered tragic, brutal, and menacing on the back of Young’s wailing Deluxe and the zombie march rhythms of Crazy Horse.

Blogcritics Book Review: Neil Young FAQ: Everything Left to Know About the Iconic and Mercurial Rocker

Neil Young FAQ:
Everything Left to Know About the Iconic and Mercurial Rocker

by Glen Boyd
(To win a free copy, see contest details below)

Here's an excerpt of a book review of Neil Young FAQ: Everything Left to Know About the Iconic and Mercurial Rocker by Glen Boyd on Blogcritics Books by Gordon Hauptfleisch:
This balancing act between the arcane and the more eminent entries is by design. Sensibly, Boyd's intention in creating a reference that "takes the reader through [Young's] recorded work album by album," is to offer up the "sort of facts known by few of the most devoted fans and serves as an introduction for the initiated Neil-phyte." The latter may appreciate NYFAQ as a kind of Neil Young 101 survey course, piecing together from the embarrassment of riches a portrait of Young as a man and artist. But Boyd, a Seattle writer and music journalist who is currently music editor at Blogcritics Magazine, did not set out to write a definitive biography, and this is certainly not a hagiographic work: more referential than reverential, Boyd's evaluations cast a critical and incisive eye to the events and episodes the casual fan may be hazy on, whether it's Farm Aid, the "Ditch Trilogy," Shakey's shaky and wavering political perspectives, or the "Southern Man" kerfuffle and the damage done.

Just a reminder on the contest to win a free copy of the new book Neil Young FAQ: Everything Left to Know About the Iconic and Mercurial Rocker.

God Save The Neil Young Fans (& Thrasher's Wheat)

"God Save The Queen"
Art by Gary Burden and Jenice Heo

As we have observed before, after running Thrasher's Wheat for over 15 years and almost a lifetime of listening to Neil Young's music, there are two things which we have found to be nearly universally constant:

1) Neil Young never ceases to surprise, amaze, and confound us, and
2) Neil Young fans never cease to surprise, amaze, and confound us.

Just weeks ago -- before anyone had heard even a single note -- folks were taking shots at "Americana" for all sorts of reasons which led us to post The Judgement Not To Pre-Judge "Americana". (And once again, pre-judging the upcoming book "Waging Heavy Peace", as well.)

And so what do Neil fans make of the most recent release of "God Save The Queen" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse? Well, judging from the comments, it's great or sucks and everything in between.

So what to make of all this? We turn to this comment by Greg M. on fans' reaction to "God Save The Queen":
"How could people get so unkind?"

Boy, am I ever glad Neil never listened to his detractors -- or his admirers -- when putting out his music over all these years. Perish the thought of his own musings.

We never would have gotten the brilliance of his artistic vision, or the glimpses of the world as seen through his eyes he has so often shared with us. Thrasher's Wheat has never, ever, been a place where people have not been allowed to voice their opinions one way or the other, but it has also always been, first and foremost, and unapologetically, a Neil Young appreciation site. And yet, the people who come here to appreciate and acknowledge Neil’s output, in all its variations, are too often put into the position of defending what doesn't need defending- Neil’s decisions to do whatever the hell he wants, in whatever the hell way he wants, for his own reasons.

We “get it”, and lament the fact that so many don’t.

And for all his efforts, Thrasher is too often put into the unfair position of refereeing bouts of snarkiness from people who seem to derive some sort of weird pleasure out of coming to a Neil Young appreciation site to trash Neil Young. People who in their wildest dreams could never approach the passion and commitment underlying A Fork In The Road, the poignancy of a Prairie Wind after a brush with death, the experimentation and righteous indignation of the Geffen years, or any other in their eyes ill-conceived effort on Neil’s part. And then those of us who do appreciate these things are denigrated as mindless worshipers, who have cravenly elevated Neil to God status, or who don’t respect the fact that this or that thing is simply not any given Neil fans cup of tea.

We sometimes go a little overboard ourselves in trying to make sense of all the negativity. We have to sit idly by while people casually beat the drum of repeating for the umpteenth time the shallowness of the idiot reviewers who seem unable to survey Neil’s career without the obligatory mention of his “career turns”, as if Neil plots these out of a sense of perversity, rather than as fidelity to muse and unvarnished honesty. We have to listen to the drone of disrespect for Are You Passionate, Trans, and now Americana, etc. ad nauseum, because they don’t “sound” the way the arbiters of how Neil should sound think they should. The golfer, Jack Nicklaus, said it all- “It’s amazing what people think you “should” do.” No, Neil must conform to his critics views, otherwise he is diminishing his talents, and depriving the world of another On The Beach or Zuma.

I tried mightily to keep my mouth shut here, and probably should have, but I guess I’m just as flawed as anyone else, and unable to rest in some of the most sublime words Neil ever uttered: “So all you critics sit alone, you’re no better than me for what you’ve shown. With your stomach pump, and your hook and ladder dreams. We could get together for some scenes.”

Oh, and “Walk On”.

A Friend Of Yours
Greg

Thanks Greg. That really helps put all of this in context. So who would've ever thought running a Neil blog would be such a challenge???

We await the release of the remaining "Americana" tracks with bated breath...

VIDEO DEBUT: "God Save The Queen" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

UPDATE: See more reaction and discussion @ God Save The Neil Young Fans (& Thrasher's Wheat).

Here's the video debut of "God Save The Queen" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse from Americana.

From the Liner Notes for Americana by Neil Young & Crazy Horse:

God Save The Queen

Written in the 18th century with possible melodic roots in the 17th century, this anthem has been sung throughout the British Commonwealth and may have been sung in North America before the American Revolution and Declaration of Independence in 1776, which rejected British sovereignty. The Americana arrangement draws from the original melody and changes some melody and lyrics in the folk process, also adding lyrics of the same melody taken from “My Country ’Tis Of Thee”, in recognition of the war of Independence and America’s transition to freedom.

TONEAudio Review: Americana by Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Here's another early review of the upcoming Americana by Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

From TONEAudio MAGAZINE by Bob Gendron:
Neil Young’s electric guitar jabs, retreats, and then stabs again, frayed-wire distortion coating the clusters of notes, the intensity evoking images of a fire-eyed preacher determined to spur his congregation to sit up and take notice. There’s talk of killing a big red rooster, proclaiming “hallelujah,” and celebrating with a communal gathering. Young’s longtime Crazy Horse mates stomp and clatter, giving the traditional tune a unified drive that turns it into an Indian war dance, the refrains doubling as dead-man’s curves as the insatiable momentum tumbles forward.

No, the children’s song ordinarily known as “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain”—named “Jesus’ Chariot” here in tribute to its Negro spiritual and salvation-based origins—has never sounded quite like this. It’s one of eleven folk songs Young and his inimitable backing band reinterpret and upend on the impossible-to-ignore Americana, a thematic album exuding immediate relevance and forceful contemplation.

Never shy about making bold political or civil statements, Young brilliantly borrows songs from the U.S.’ historical fabric and tosses them as live grenades that explode on impact, broaching the staple concepts—freedom, liberty, justice, equality, rights, conflicts, privacy, the common good—on which America prides itself. He and Crazy Horse invoke these broad subjects without advocating one party or another; Americana owes some of its political and cultural potency to its impartiality.

The Judgement Not To Pre-Judge "Waging Heavy Peace"

In yet another case of deja vu all over again, it seems that there's a rush to judgement on "Waging Heavy Peace", Neil Yong's upcoming autobiography.

Just weeks ago -- before anyone had even heard a single note -- folks were taking shots at "Americana" for all sorts of reasons which led us to The Judgement Not To Pre-Judge "Americana".

Admittedly, we're finding this debate about a 3-5 page excerpt to be well... perplexing, but not so surprising.

As BIGCHIEF commented: "I think it's a little premature to judge a 416 page book by a 2 1/2 page snippet ... I mean, that's not unlike dropping a needle on a LP for three seconds and saying "this thing sucks"".

So here's a comment of the moment from Waging Heavy Peace: Excerpt, Patti Smith Will Interview Neil Young:
I haven't read the excerpt, and may not. I'll probably wait for the book.

As for "no one's comments", he's certainly entitled to them, and is very eloquent in stating them. If the book is terribly written, I'm not surprised; Neil is a songwriter and musician, and from what I've gleaned from following him for 40-odd years, has never passed himself off as a writer of prose.

Also, sometimes in interviews he can come off sounding a little...simplistic. I by no means mean he is simple, some people just speak simply. If my observation is true, who cares? I don't buy his records in the hope of reading, or watching, or listening to, an interview. It's all about the music.

The problem with artists of Neil's stature is, sometimes we have exceedingly high opinions and expectations of their every move, defending them at every turn. I guess I'm what you'd call a Neil "fanatic", yet I am unafraid to admit that he's made some shitty records; hell, in all these years the law of averages practically dictates that he would, as has Dylan, and many others. Who cares?

I think the book will be fascinating, whether it's badly written or not. But, goddamn people, quit being so snarky (whether you think "no one" is an asshole or not) in defending the as-yet unread book by a rock star. There are many bigger fish to fry if you want to get riled up (current events, anyone?). Fuck me (and, given the comments by some of you, I'm sure you'll toss that back to me, with a different meaning).

Peace out.

Peace out, indeed.

As for us? We can't wait to hear what Patti Smith has to say on all of this when she discusses at the Book Expo event next month.

More on the what seems to be the appropriately titled book "Waging Heavy Peace".

NEW VIDEO: "Clementine" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Here's the new video for "Clementine" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse from the upcoming Americana .

From the Liner Notes for Americana by Neil Young & Crazy Horse:
Clementine

This American folk ballad is believed to be based on “Down By The River Liv’d a Maiden” by H.S. Thompson 1863. However, it is usually credited to Percy Montrose, 1884 or Barker Bradford from about the same period. The Americana arrangement extends the folk process, using many of the original words and a new melody. The song tells the story of either a bereaved lover recalling his lost sweetheart, or a father missing his lost daughter. In both cases the daughter has drowned in an accident. The song is now famous as an American children’s song. The verse about Clementine’s sister has been omitted from most children’s versions. This verse has different meanings depending on whether the point of view of the singer is taken as the lover or the father.

And, for a completely different video of the song, check this version of "Clementine".

You may want to catch this one really quick while it stays up.

Note that the video is marked as "REJECTED" at the end. However, in order to avoid another Treasure debacle, we made sure that Archives Guy has Ok'd this.

The archival footage seems to come from a slower, simpler time in Americana when families participated in fun activities and daring pastimes.

ps - moms, please don't try this at home.

Review and Contest - Neil Young FAQ: Everything Left to Know About the Iconic and Mercurial Rocker

Neil Young FAQ:
Everything Left to Know About the Iconic and Mercurial Rocker

by Glen Boyd
(To win a free copy, see contest details below)

One of the challenges of reviewing books on Neil Young is figuring out whether they are truly ground breaking into new territory versus being just simply another re-hash.

It would seem that for even those Neil Young fans who've read everything from Jimmy McDonough's deeply flawed but rather definitive Shakey: A Neil Young Biography to Long May You Run: The Illustrated History of Neil Young will find something new and eye catching in Neil Young FAQ.

The just published Neil Young FAQ: Everything Left to Know About the Iconic and Mercurial Rocker by Glen Boyd manages that challenge by taking much of what we know about Neil Young and his music and packaging it into a compelling and indispensable reference book for your rock & roll library.

The first impression one gets from leafing through the pages is the breadth and depth of the FAQ's format with 385 pages covering Young's long, storied career. The FAQ covers five decades with accurate research, photos (many never before published) from the 1960s to the present, with concert posters, memorabilia and other assorted intriguing oddities and one-offs.

In the interest of full disclosure here, we must state upfront that we provided research assistance and wrote the book's Foreword. When author (and fellow music blogger) Glen Boyd asked us to help out on this book we admit that we were a bit hesitant. Not that we thought a Neil Young FAQ was a bad idea or anything. It was just thinking about the daunting task of trying to catalog the virtually uncategorizable Neil Young. But author Boyd has done just that -- categorized the uncategorizable .

As author Boyd posted recently, "After a two-year journey of blood, sweat, tears, and more all-nighters writing furiously until the sun came up than I care to remember, my first full-length book as a music journalist was finally released this week."

The book is organized into 42 chapters covering various segments of Neil's career, such as "Like An Ocean Fish Who Swam Upstream: Chrome Dreams, American Stars And Bars, The Ducks, Decade, And Comes A Time" and "More To The Picture Than Meets The Eye: Human Highway, Rust Never Sleeps, And The Punk Rock Connection." In mixing a variety of approaches, such as reviews, lists, and anecdotes, The Neil Young FAQ keeps the reader turning the pages in anticipation of where we'll go next -- whether the ditch or the middle of the road -- much like Young's quixotic career itself.

The Neil Young FAQ is an up to date and definitive guide to the music and covers every song and album, as well as, unreleased legendary recordings such as Homegrown, Chrome Dreams, Toast, Oceanside, Countryside and Meadow Dusk.

In an interview with author Glen Boyd, he says that the effort took nearly two years together and adds:

"I'm a huge fan of his, going way way back. I know an awful lot about him and I'm very aware of his entire history. Once you actually start writing something like this though and you start researching it, there's so much that you find out you didn't know.

The most remarkable thing about Young is that he remains relevant and vital well into his fifth decade of making music."

The Neil Young FAQ has quite a few memorable items that even some of his die-hard fans may not be aware of. For example, because of pressing problems with the album 'Comes A Time', Young purchased the entire production run of 200,000 copies and shot bullet holes through them. He did not want the album released until the problems with the recording were corrected.

In addition to pulling together so many disparate threads of Young's career, Boyd manages to breath new life into well known criticisms like Young's genre hopping 1980's period. He writes:
Of all the genre-hopping wackiness that Neil Young became somewhat infamous for during the eighties though, there are certainly any number of examples one could point towards as being less sincere, more misguided efforts than Trans (Everybody’s Rocking, anyone?).

But Trans alone remains the most visible reminder from that strangest of periods in Neil Young’s long career. Fairly or otherwise, the album that marked Neil Young’s brief flirtation with a Kraftwerk influenced, synthesized brand of rock continues to be a flashpoint in the so-called “eighties debate” even now.

Even so, the album performed much better on the Billboard charts at the time than you might expect, peaking at a rather respectful #19. The fact that this happened despite a lack of any real support, either at radio or from the record company (even though the album represented his Geffen Records debut), has to be considered somewhat remarkable in retrospect today.

The fact is, the techno-pop flavored sounds of Neil Young’s then newly synthesized music would have fit right in with MTV’s playlist at the time – heavy on videos from British syntho-pop acts like Soft Cell and Duran Duran as it was.

These types of observations are woven throughout the FAQ which provides context for the more casual fan, yet sufficient analysis for a diehard rustie to find some new life breathed into a familiar topic.

In terms of minor criticism, we would have liked to have seen more use of color images but that's likely due to publishing economics. And some may not have that keen an interest in rare record covers and labels while many Neil vinyl junkies will likely revel in the detail.

Nevertheless, the book will certainly hold a lot of surprises and revelations for the more casual fan. After watching Boyd’s vision to comprehensively document Young’s forty-plus-year career come together -— all the while juggling all of the other challenges that come with following this rock-’n’-roll scene on a daily basis -— the Neil Young FAQ will hopefully be an essential reference book in your own music library. And just maybe it will provide some clues to unlocking the mysteries of Young’s vast canon of work over some five decades and counting.

Neil Young Plays Robin Hood Foundation

In a surprise appearance on Monday night, Neil Young performed "Heart of Gold" at a benefit event for the Robin Hood Foundation in New York City .

The event, one of the largest single fundraisers in the U.S., benefits nonprofits providing job training, shelter, meals, education and health care in New York’s five boroughs.

From Scene Last Night: Blankfein, Soros, Neil Young, Rihanna - Bloomberg by Amanda Gordon:
The Robin Hood Foundation put George Soros, Steve Cohen, Lloyd Blankfein, Stanley Tucci and about 3,800 other guests on a virtual train ride last night at its annual gala.

The subway-themed event at Manhattan’s sprawling Javits Center featured gigantic projection screens showing New Yorkers going through the turnstiles and waiting on benches for trains.

The price of admission was $3,000. The total raised last night was $57.4 million, including $13 million pledged on electronic devices to Robin Hood and $19 million pledged on the same devices to a new initiative with the X Prize Foundation, which will offer prizes to find solutions to poverty in New York City and beyond.
...

Neil Young, a surprise performer, came on just as guests dug into grilled cheese and gazpacho. His first song was “Heart of Gold.” After chocolate cake and coffee, Rihanna kicked off with “Only Girl” and kept the crowd bobbing along with “Run This Town” and “Live Your Life.”

Just weeks ago, we featured as our Photo of the Moment: Neil Young and Donald "Duck" Dunn. Donald "Duck" Dunn was on bass with Booker T & The MG's as Neil Young's band at Finsbury Park, London in 1993.

Sadly, Donald "Duck" Dunn has moved on to the great gig in the sky.

Steve Cropper, Dunn's friend and bandmate, announced the bassist's passing on his Facebook page:
"Today I lost my best friend, the World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live. Duck Dunn died in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club."

The MGs were the house band for Stax Records, and Dunn can be heard on songs such as Otis Redding's "Respect" and Sam and Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'."

Here's the 2 Minute History of Donald "Duck" Dunn with several clips including Neil Young.

In addition to touring with Neil Young in 1993, Booker T & The MG's with Donald "Duck" Dunn is featured on the 2002 Neil Young album ‘Are You Passionate?’.

Comment of the Moment: Some Thoughts on Americana Songs

With two songs from Americana by Neil Young & Crazy Horse out now ("Oh Susannah" and "Jesus' Chariot" (She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain), the opinions are starting to roll in.

From a comment on Some Thoughts on New Video "Oh Susannah" by D. I. Kertis:
Judging from that video footage, Neil is not romanticizing the past here--which, you know, does fit with the whole concept he mentioned about highlighting the similarities between America's problems when these songs were first played and the ones we're facing now. I have to admit that the smoking kid makes me squirm a bit, but it's definitely best not whitewashed over.

Musically, I have only good things to say about the songs I've heard so far from 'Americana', though I'm actually even more interested to hear Neil and the Horse's takes on 'Gallows Pole', 'This Land is Your Land', and 'Tom Dula'. After hearing 'Jesus' Chariot', I suspect 'Clementine' should be interesting as well, and 'God Save the Queen', especially after all the (in my opinion) unwarranted brouhaha about its appearance on the track list.

I've actually gotten to be more and more interested in folk music as time goes on. When I say folk music, I don't just mean the American, either. I think it has a lot to do with the notion of it having been created by people in a pre-mass media age, trying to amuse themselves. So they had to be more creative themselves, because they couldn't just access other people's art and entertainment so easily like we can today.

If you listen to folk songs not just from America but from European history as well, they have their unique conventions and forms, signs that they were originated by every day people, not "artists" in the sense that we often think of them today. My fascination is also partly because this is music of the people: commonly owned art. Many of the songs on 'Americana' we all take for granted the right to perform again and again, to come up with our own variations/evolutions of per the folk process. It is lovely to think there is art and music that a whole community (the whole human community, really) can own and have creative domain over, that we can share and each take our own angle on.

Folk music, at some level, seems to represent such a free spirit of art and creativity, and can be incredibly culturally and historically rich. Because these were often songs written by or from the perspectives of everyday people, they tend still to resonate with the common man even today.

Especially in songs with universally applicable ideals or messages, there is a great potential for music (or art of any kind) to bring people together, bring about sharing, cooperation, potentially sparking even more creativity and art.

Thanks D. I.! Yes, music & art bringing people together is something we need more of right now.

Song Video Premiere: "Jesus' Chariot" (She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain) by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Here's the new video of "Jesus' Chariot" from the upcoming Americana by Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

From the Liner Notes for Americana by Neil Young & Crazy Horse:
Jesus’ Chariot (She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain)

Written in the 1800s based on an old Negro spiritual, this song refers to the second coming of Jesus and “she” is the chariot Jesus is coming on. Some interpret this as the end of the world. Others have said that “she” refers to union organizer Mary Harris “Mother” Jones going to promote formation of labor unions in the Appalachian coal mining camps. The Americana arrangement continues the folk process with a new melody, a new title and a combination of lyric sources.

Per Song Premiere: Neil Young Sets 'Americana' On Fire : All Songs Considered Blog : NPR:
This song, as with all the songs on the record, have been paired up with archival footage. This footage is from an early scene in D.W. Griffith's controversial 1915 film Birth of a Nation, in which the Southern Cameron family hosts a farewell ball for soldiers fighting for the Confederacy.

Set for a June 5th release, you can now pre-Order "Americana" on Amazon.com (Thanks! You'll be helping to support us here at Thrasher's Wheat.)

VIDEO: "Mansion On The Hill" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Neil Young in "Mansion On The Hill" video

Probably one of our favorite songs on the 1990 Ragged Glory album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse is "Mansion On The Hill".

This is the official video for the song and is a clever mix of performance and concept. What more could you ask for? Neil in a white collar preacher's outfit?! Now that is just whacky.

And, the song features a choir, so you if you're leery of the upcoming Americana, you can maybe get a better feel for Neil Young & Crazy Horse music arranged with this concept.

Is It Really All Just A "Hippie Dream"?

'Waging Heavy Peace' by Neil Young
(Click photo to enlarge)

"Hippie Dream" reads the note stuck in Neil Young's hat on the cover of his upcoming book 'Waging Heavy Peace' and set for release on October 2, 2012.

The photo for the book cover looks to be from the same photography session that put Neil Young On the Cover of the Rolling Stone.

And this also seems to be the same photo session as was the same used for 2005 NBC's Saturday Night Live.

From a comment on BOOK COVER: 'Waging Heavy Peace' by Neil Young by Arthur:
The first thing I notice about the cover is that Neil's eyes are shaded out from the hat brim. He looks like a journalist from the '40's. Makes me think of the image of Lady Justice who's eyes are blindfolded. Probably a metaphor there if you think about it.

The song "Hippie Dream" was pretty much about Crosby, but could be a metaphor again about a generation taking the "High Road" instead of a more balanced "Human Highway".

Bottom line is, Neil is Scott Young's son. And he has a lot of Rassy in him too. But I think he's go a lot more of Scott's DNA in him than anything. Hell, he even LOOKS like Scott these days!

Aside from that, the cover of "Americana" uses mid-'70's images of Crazy Horse and not the current "mature" look of the members. But Neil does that a lot with what he puts out. Hey, it's still Neil. And his career is all one....career.

All we have to do is turn the page when he offers a new chapter.

Thanks Arthur!

Artist Shepard Fairey Paints Neil Young's New Songs

"Clementine”
by Shepard Fairey
(Click photo to enlarge)

According to the other NYTimes.com, artist Shepard Fairey is making a painting of each song for Neil Young's new album “Americana.”
What Mr. Fairey didn’t expect was the intensity of Mr. Young’s involvement.

For all the tracks, the artist submitted several digital mockups inspired by the narrative (none based on an identifiable original source, he emphasized). Then Mr. Young picked his favorites. Mr. Fairey said he was also surprised to learn that “God Save the Queen” is not just a Sex Pistols song but an old British anthem and the source of the melody for “My Country ’Tis of Thee.” His finished painting depicts the Queen and Betsy Ross sewing a combination of British and American flags; its text reads “God save the land of liberty”— a phrase with both a dual origin and a double meaning.

“Neil and I talked about that,” Mr. Fairey said. “They left England, and basically made the same mistakes. In some respect it all blends together.”

As for the paintings themselves?

According to NYTimes.com, they will put up for sale, may be used in music videos for the album or for stage design for ***the tour***.

Here's a look at some other work by Shepard Fairey ...

NEW PREVIEW: Neil Young Journeys Film

A new preview of Neil Young's Journeys film is now available.

Directed by Jonathan Demme, Journeys captures Neil Young's 2011 solo tour to Toronto's Massey Hall. Concert footage of the Massey Hall performances is interspersed with scenes from a road trip through Ontario. Driving a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young visits the rural town of Omemee, where he spent a key part of his formative years, and reminisces about his former neighbors. As he drives past the dramatically changed landscape, Young fondly embraces his memories of the past.

No Depression Review: "Americana" by Neil Young and Crazy Horse

An early preview review of "Americana" by Neil Young and Crazy Horse from No Depression | Americana and Roots Music by Nancy Dunham:
If a listener doesn't tune into the words on some of the songs, it'd be easy to mistake them for modern-day rock anthems. That's especially true on the album's opening track "Oh Susanna," which is awash in electric guitars and throbbing drums plus Young's unmistakeable voices, which still have the strength and nuances they held a few decades ago.

...

My view is that anyone who can make songs such as "She'll be Coming 'Round the Mountain" cool again and introduce classic songs to a new generation is a genius, in my view.

The Scream and Neil Young

Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”
Sold @ $119.9 million
(Click photo to enlarge)

Just in case you haven't been following the art auction world lately, the painting “The Scream” by Edvard Munch’s just sold for $119.9 million.

So Petter Olsen, now that you've sold “The Scream”, what are you going to do?

From NYPOST.com:
Some guys have all the luck.

After selling Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” for a whopping $119.9 million, the painting’s ex-owner, Petter Olsen, came face to face with one of his all-time idols. After the gavel dropped at the Sotheby’s auction Wednesday night, the billionaire Norwegian businessman headed to dinner with his old friend, New York art dealer Edward Tyler Nahem, at Café Boulud.

When Olsen entered, he spotted his personal hero, rock ’n’ roll legend Neil Young.

The two then spent “15 minutes in conversation, as the room looked on in amazement,” a spy said, adding that even though Olsen had just made a fortune, he looked happier to have met Young. Olsen was apparently a Young fan going back to his student days at Stanford University in the 1970s. Among those at the dinner for eight were Olsen’s girlfriend, his three daughters and Nahem, sources said.

And what does one eat after pocketing so much money? On the menu, spies said, were white asparagus with hen’s eggs, foie gras, peekytoe crab, spring lamb (or halibut), molten Valrhona chocolate cake and, to wash it all down, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Olsen has said he sold off “The Scream” to fund a new Munch museum he’s planning to open in Norway.

No word on what Neil was wearing or eating or who he was with or other oh-so irrelevant gossipy details.

capsized in excess...

Kent State Ohio Massacre Coverup Continues

Terry Norman - FBI informant/provocateur
70 Seconds Before Kent State Shootings
May 4, 1970 @ 12:24 PM

Kent State Truth Tribunal

So what really happened at Kent State, Ohio 42 years ago today?

Based on last week's U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation report, we still might never know. Or will we someday learn the awful truth of that tragic day that left 4 dead in Ohio?

It seems that the key to the truth lies with Terry Norman.

In recently discovered film of the Kent State Shooting in 1970 (1:07.40 thru 1:08), FBI informant provocateur Terry Norman (photo at top) is the young man in the light colored sports jacket. Earlier that day Norman's mentor, Detective Tom Kelly from the Kent Police had attempted to have Norman's gun approved for carrying on campus during the demonstrations, but that approval never came so it's KEY that the video clearly shows Norman handing over his gun to Detective Kelly.

From forensic evidence expert Stuart Allen's analyses of the Kent State Tape in 2010, we learned that Norman shot that weapon at the May 4th demonstration as he was attacked & beat-up by students who saw his gun. (More on Terry Norman ~ Does Terry Norman Hold the Key to Kent State?.)

Watching these Kent State videos without sound, Norman's gun hand-off coupled with the post-Kent State Tape analysis, we now understand the importance of this interaction caught on video & at many other sources.

Norman's pistol 'created the sound of sniper fire.'

In response to the DOJ whitewash report Congressman Dennis Kucinich issued a statement:
“The letter also failed to indicate any efforts to reconcile the evidence in the recording with any prior statements about the incident made by FBI paid informant, Terry Norman, who was on campus that day and was known to have brandished a gun that might have created the sounds caught in the recording.

“While I appreciate the response from the Justice Department, ultimately, they fail to examine key questions and discrepancies. It is well known that an FBI informant, Terry Norman, was on the campus. That FBI informant was carrying a gun. Eye witnesses testified that they saw Mr. Norman brandish that weapon. Two experts in forensic audio, who have previously testified in court regarding audio forensics, found gunshots in their analysis of the audio recording.

Did an FBI informant discharge a firearm at Kent State?

Did an FBI informant precipitate the shootings?"

Why is understanding the Kent State Ohio Massacre critical?

To understand the events of May 4, 1970 at Kent State and the four dead in Ohio, is to understand much of what has happened in our history before, during and after.

In the intervening 41 years, there have been a wide range of commissions, studies, research and theories of what actually led to twenty-eight Ohio National Guardsmen shooting into a crowd of anti-war protesters at Kent State University which left four college students dead on the ground.

kent state
Photo by Kent State photojournalism student John Filo

"History never exactly repeats itself.

But its currents are never far from the present. As today’s protesters and police employ bolder tactics, the Kent State and Jackson State anniversaries should remind us that deadly mistakes can and do happen. It is the government’s responsibility to wield proportionate force, not to over-arm police and place them in a position where they could panic with deadly results."

~~ Steven Rosenfeld, Will a Militarized Police Force Facing Occupy Wall Street Lead to Another Kent State Massacre? | Civil Liberties | AlterNet

Despite many official denials, there have always been persistent theories that the National Guard was actually provoked into the shootings by a belief that they were being fired upon themselves and therefore were acting in self defense.

What follows is a brief recap for those less familiar with the The Kent State Massacre, followed by the latest developments.

The spring of 1970 was a time of significant unrest on college campuses protesting the Vietnam war and President Richard Nixon's announcement of a new American invasion of Cambodia, provoking an escalation in anti-war protests. The anti-war protest movement culminated with the Kent State Massacre which resulted in hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closing throughout the United States due to a student strike of four million students. The official President's Commission on Campus Unrest concluded that "the indiscriminate firing of rifles into a crowd of students and the deaths that followed were unnecessary, unwarranted, and inexcusable."

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Minneapolis, MN 1970
"They were about to walk out on stage and were spending a moment warming up."

Immediately after the Kent State shooting on May 4, 1970, Neil Young composed the song "Ohio" after looking at photos appearing in Life magazine and then taking a walk in the woods. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young went to the studio and recorded the song which was released to radio stations shortly after the killings.

A rather significant article in today's The Cleveland (Ohio) Plain Dealer "Neil Young's 'Ohio' evokes strong images of May 4, 1970 shootings at Kent State" by Mark Dawidziak:
It was more than just another protest song.

Ohio was a cry of anguish, penned by Neil Young after seeing pictures taken at Kent State University on May 4, 1970.

But 40 years after members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on college students, Young's "Ohio" remains the most evocative pop-culture response to a defining moment in American history.

"This is an event that now is in every history book," said Carole A. Barbato, a Kent State University professor of communication studies who team-teaches a course on May 4. "Wherever you live, even though your environment obviously shapes how you perceive things, you're probably as aware of the shootings at Kent State as those of us in Northeast Ohio. And even though this still would be in the history books, the pop culture certainly does perpetuate that. "Ohio" was entering the pop-culture consciousness within three weeks of the shootings.

"It was the quickest and best reaction to Kent State, with Neil Young acting as 50 percent songwriter and 50 percent journalist," said David Bianculli, a pop-culture historian who teaches at Rowan University and regularly contributes to NPR's "Fresh Air."

"I'll tell you what that song meant," said Bianculli, author of the recently published "Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." "After the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, you felt kind of helpless as a young person. It seemed that when someone had your voice, that voice was silenced, usually by violence.

"Then you have Kent State, and college kids are actually fired upon. And when you just might start to be thinking, you don't dare have a voice or there is no voice, from the radio comes this voice of solidarity and outrage. It wasn't just a pop song."

...
"After 1970, that doesn't happen again. It didn't need to happen again, mostly because it didn't need to happen there. And that's what Neil Young's song spoke to."

Thanks Ken D.
