PRE-SALE NOW: Pacific Northwest Concert Dates Added + Neil Young's Solo "Big 3M Theater Tour": Setlist Analysis

Neil Young's Solo "Big 3M Theater Tour" Setlists
Sugar Mountain | Chronological Grid

We started this post as a setlist analysis of Neil Young's Solo "Big 3M Theater Tour", but he just announced that Pacific Northwest concert dates have been added. PRE-SALE NOW: More below on that.

But 1st, setlist analysis and statistics for all of our Neil data nerds out there via our good buddy Tom on Sugar Mountain.

Over the course of just 6 concerts in Milwaukee, Madison, and Minneapolis (3M):

  • 120 songs
  • 51 unique songs
  • 3 New Songs:
    • (Green Is Blue)
    • (Olden Days)
    • (Truth Kills)
  • Running Dry (Requiem For The Rockets) - 1st concert performance - 2019-01-29
  • Alabama - 1st solo performance - 2019-01-31
  • F*!#in' Up - 1st acoustic performance - 2019-01-29
  • Like A Hurricane - 3rd acoustic performance - 2019-01-23

And last but not least, 6 "Thrasher"'s in a row! Every single night. Note "Thrasher" comment below on Night #4 in MPLS by Unknown Dad:
First time Long time as they say...

Saw 3 of the 4 shows this week...was great to have NY back locally after a 9 year drought. Brought my 12 year old son to the first and last shows. He is very passionate about R&R, and was great to share this with him.

Regarding Truth Kills, Neil introduced as a topical song...at end he commented as it was a story about kids, and how easily they can see the truth. Led to a good car chat on way home. Opening riff sort of in the vein of 'My My Hey Hey'...

Lyrics i can recall: - The Water Wars are coming...It;s gonna take more than a couple of storms to make life worth living as the planet warms - Don't want to be great again, first time was good enough - truth kills in a world of lies, so I'll be speaking up Etc.

- Don't be Denied was incredible.

- Neil had wrong harmonica for Thrasher which he realized too late. So he played a guitar instrumental instead. then after song he put the right harmonica in then redid the instrumental.

- My son wanted Cortez and he got it.

Comment of the Moment: Neil Young Solo: Madison, Wisconsin, January 24

The Comment of the Moment is from Neil Young Solo: Madison, Wisconsin, January 24 by terryfunku:
I attended both gigs (and the crowd was much more well-behaved in Madison). For the 23rd, I considered Harvest Moon an ode to Pegi, and on the 24th, I believe even more so that Razor Love was in that same vein. Razor Love alone made Madison worth the price of admission, as did Cortez the Killer and Thrasher the previous evening.

I recorded both nights from the balcony. I'm in the process of producing them now. It's rather tedious, turning an acoustic gig recording into an enjoyable listen that doesn't cause your head to explode from audience noise/applause (and even more so since I'm quite anal in my quest for a near-perfect listening experience).

In Milwaukee, I scolded any vocalizations near me, as my journey had cost me $240 this night/$205 for the next night, the art of getting my gear in, attending 3 prior shows over 12 years at a cost of about $700, etc. all in the hope of hearing an acoustic Cortez, Thrasher, or Ambulance Blues at some point. This pilgrimage was seemingly being rewarded and I wasn't about to have this climax stained by some dweebs who were comfortable pissing on their neighbors' enjoyment. My scoldings will hopefully be suppressed into the sonic ambience of the recording as I make my edits.

In Milwaukee, I shushed the guy-next-to-me's kid as I quickly distinguished the opening rhythm of Cortez (and began internally sublimating, having to release a few awe-struck sighs). Within a few seconds of that I also chastised the guy behind me who had been making off-rhythm percussive noises during a few of the prior songs, as well as other random hoots whenever he got an ear boner. As soon as he began talking, I turned and blurted out "Stahhp tawkin'!" In response, he softly whispers aloud, "That's the first thing I've said?" :P

And you know what? After that, it was the fuckin' final one as well. No local incursions for the rest of the evening.

It was a beautiful 2 night experience. My only regret is not having the money to catch the remaining 4 nights in Minnie. There are really only 3 songs remaining on my dream sheet now: Ambulance Blues, Give Me Strength, and White Line (acoustic).
Thanks terryfunku for the comment. No regrets. We get what can get, when we can.

And thanks for trying to keep "the peace". While some may feel that this atmosphere feeds into a "prima donna" complex -- from everything we know in publishing this blog -- being able to enjoy Neil acoustic in a majestic setting, undisturbed by neighbors, is paramount to the experience.

As we sometimes remind ...

Concert Review of the Moment: Neil Young Solo - Riverside Theater, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, January 23, 2019

Neil Young Solo Minneapolis Residency:
Night #1 - Pantages Theatre, (Minneapolis, Minnesota) January 26

SOLD OUT! Photo by Donald Leary via Facebook (Thanks HtH!)

Jamjet has left a new comment on your post on Neil Young's Solo "Big 3M Theater Tour" Begins Tonight: Riverside Theater, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, January 23 :
Milwaukee

Apologies Thrasher, I have been traveling

I was lucky enough to manage center front row seats with my wife.

For me, a Neil concert is always preempted with the anticipatory thought of: “Is Neil going to connect with us tonight?” “Will a 5 minute song morph into a 20 minute jam?”

You never know exactly what Neil you’re going to get. It is that journey of discovery which makes his shows so special.

Milwaukee confused me a tad. First, let me say it was, without a doubt, the best solo performance I’ve seen to date. There was something amiss. I don’t think it was a reaction to the crowd as a news article suggest. Yes he did comment on the crowd noise and the tuning of his guitar, although in between songs while he was praised by the audience. He didn’t appear to have a defined set list for the night. He wandered aimlessly from the guitar cluster to the multiple pianos, sometimes hesitating at each as if deciding which to play.

My confusion lies in the aborted songs. He started playing “One of these days” on the piano. As the news articles have posted, he stood up mid song from the piano and finished on the guitar. What I saw prior to him standing up was this, while playing he turned toward the crowd while seated as if to get up, I whispered to my wife “something’s up”. Immediately thereafter he stood up and walked over to his chair and picked up a guitar. No one knew whether he would remain with “one of these days” or not. He did.

When he aborted “Don’t Be Denied”-one of my favorites- and stuck out his hand, I didn’t see it as due to the crowd, maybe I was so damn immersed while listening to Neil that I didn’t hear the crowd. When he stuck out his hand, his hand was turned sideways not upright, as if putting your hand in front of your face to block a bright light. It appeared labored, hesitant and unsure, as if he couldn’t make up his mind. I just didn’t see it as a gesture of annoyance with the crowd but more as not feeling connected to that song.

Neil played one song on the electric, “Ohio.” It was grungy and thunderous. Probably the most passionate rendition I’ve ever witnessed.

I typically insist on purchasing a few extra tickets for friends in hopes they will have a near spiritual experience, as I do. This night would have made that happen.

We made the trek from Arizona and only wished we had committed to more of the big M shows.
Thanks Jamjet for the Milwaukee report and all of the details!

Sounds like you were pretty upclose to see all of those intimate details. "“Ohio.” It was grungy and thunderous. Probably the most passionate rendition I’ve ever witnessed."

nice

CONCERT REVIEW: Neil Young Stuns Furloughed Fed on Opening Night of 2019 Mini Solo Tour

"We had a great time in Milwaukee. Played some songs for the folks! It’s always great to get the first one behind you. What a crowd! - a real NYA experience."
Thank You Milwaukee! | NYA

Here's a review we received from our buddy John Kwit, North American Reporter for 4WaySite: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Archives on
Neil Young's Solo "Big 3M Theater Tour" at Riverside Theater, Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 23.

Thanks John.
enjoy!

Neil Young Stuns Furloughed Fed on Opening Night of 2019 Mini Solo Tour

Do you know how cold it is to stand outside next to an idling tour bus for 4 hours on a frigid Wisconsin afternoon in the hopes of directly asking Neil Young to humbly consider an in-person interview with a reporter not representing Rolling Stone magazine or The New York Times?

Do you know what it’s like to sit with your head against the wall in the very back row of the beautiful Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a furloughed, unpaid Federal employee wondering why I spent money a few months ago on a Neil Young Archives subscription & opening night solo tour ticket when bills are now sitting unpaid?

Have you ever felt like leaving a Neil Young concert early, or in my case, right after I took my seat, when you see the stage layout is the same as you’ve seen so many times before (2 baby grand pianos, an uptight piano, a pipe organ, a banjo, 1 electric guitar & a ring of acoustics)? I swear if he opened with From Hank to Hendrix I would have immediately gotten out of my seat, driven an hour and a half home and went to bed without batting an eyelash.

Luckily, a surprise opening acoustic guitarist, Benjamin Booker, got my undivided attention. Hopefully news of his smooth vocals and simple yet dexterous picking will spread.

And Neil? Oh yes he didn’t open with From Hank to Hendrix. In fact I’m oh so glad I stayed for the entire evening. If my poor memory is correct, most of the 18 or 19 songs he played were not repeats from the time I saw him solo at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre just a short time ago. I’ll let the data analysts fill in the set list, instrument used, running time, etc. One of his obscure yet fascinating songs that I got to hear live for the first time shares your name. (No, it’s not Dolf’s Wheat.)

What I will share without spoiling the surprise for anyone attending the Madison or Minneapolis gigs is that the vast majority of the set was Neil on acoustic guitar, in fine voice, with or without harmonica. The only people I felt sorry for were the roadies who loaded the pump organ & upright piano on & off the stage without seeing a note of use.

In summary: A great night for a furloughed Fed & everyone else in attendance. Highly, highly recommended viewing.

Regards,
John Kwit

Thanks again so much for sending John!

We have many fond memories of meeting up in Chicago last summer. So glad the night worked out. We were kind of worried about where your review was going?!

Great that you got that Dolf’s Wheat song!!! One of our favorites of all time. ;) Now back to work!

Midnight Shine Covers Neil Young's "Heart of Gold"

While many may argue that the world really doesn't need yet another cover of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold", we beg to differ.

We say that the world really DOES need another cover of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold". Actually many, many more would be a thing of beauty.

Watch this cover and maybe you'll understand.

If you don't, you have a heart of stone. Please take our advice.

"It's these expressions I never give"

This cover is by the Canadian band Midnight Shine. From video clip:
In the fall of 2018, a production crew of three traveled to an isolated Cree community in Northern Ontario with 14 cases of gear and one ambitious plan: shooting two music videos in five days with Midnight Shine frontman Adrian Sutherland. Getting the job done in only four, they used the remaining time on the ground to shoot this awesome little video for HEART OF GOLD.

It came together spontaneously, magically, and with a little help from some little (and big) friends... Shot and directed by Cliff Hokanson, produced by RoseAnna Schick, Adrian Sutherland as executive producer, with video crew Jesse Davidson and Geeshig Sutherland. Edited by Bethany Fontaine, colouring and effects by Tony Wytinck. Shot on location in Attawapiskat First Nation. Thank you to everyone in the video, Judy Sutherland, The Moose Takeout, and the Rez Dogs, too.

ABOUT THE SONG: The lead single from Midnight Shine’s third album HIGH ROAD (released February 2018) is an exceptional cover of HEART OF GOLD, bringing a timely new sound to a timeless classic. This version is distinctly different, yet honours the heart and soul of the original.

“Quite a fascinating version of Neil’s song. Love the First Nations’ feel of it. Very cool...” -- John Einarson, Neil Young Biographer & Music Historian

"In a bold choice, the band pays tribute to one of Canada’s greatest songwriters and folk music’s greatest innovators, Neil Young. Their cover of his 1972 hit “Heart Of Gold” is stunning and not only links the group to the folk roots of rock and roll but also highlights the group’s Indigenous heritage through the vocal styling and with the final verse being translated into Mushkegowuk Cree. The track is not only a definite highlight among High Road, but also holds up to the original..." -- Gerrod Harris, Canadianbeats.ca

"Putting a fresh spin on a classic is a tough task, but James Bay-area Indigenous roots-rockers Midnight Shine manages to do just that. The familiar strummed guitar intro is accompanied by wailing Indigenous vocals that grab your attention instantly... Adrian Sutherland delivers a heartfelt and convincing vocal performance, and a section of the tune is sung in his Cree language. We reckon Neil would approve." -- Kerry Doole, FYI Music News

More on Neil Young's immortal, classic song "Heart of Gold" -- it's global impact, enduring legacy and heavy consequence.

And -- yes -- it really is all about The Kids, The Children of Destiny.

Neil Young's Film "Journey Through the Past" Coming to NYA Hearse Theater

Neil Young's Film "Journey Through the Past" is coming to NYA Hearse Theater per a recent posting on Times-Contrarian | NYA.

The 1973 film -- presciently referred to as "Early Neil Young as Reality TV" -- has long been an underground cult classic for fans with it's quite weird trippiness and stream of consciousness incomprehensibility.

As Neil Young writes on Times-Contrarian | NYA:

"I was not trying to impress anyone with my film making prowess and I succeeded."

Art Inspired by Neil Young Album | David Lunney, Chrome Dreams Pallas Projects + Studios, Dublin, 5 April 2018 – 14 April 2018

Chrome Dreams by David Lunney

Can "chrome dreams" become real?

Read about how integral the frame is for the painting, photograph and sculpture of artist David Lunney, and why he's taking inspiration from a bootleg Neil Young album.

From David Lunney, Chrome Dreams | Pallas Projects + Studios, Dublin, 5 April 2018 – 14 April 2018 in CIRCA Art Magazine (CIRCA is an online magazine publishing reviews, essays and projects around the theory and practice of contemporary art in Ireland) by Aidan Kelly Murphy:
Chrome Dreams is the name given to a semi-fictional Neil Young album from 1977 that was finished but, according to lore, never released.

Young shelved it as he shifted direction and released another album. In the intervening decades this collection of songs has taken on mythological qualities far exceeding the individual merits of the songs; exiting the realm of truth into urban myth, new additional layers to the story have kept on developing. Some have said that an acetate version of the album was bootlegged and even included a booklet, others have dismissed these physical manifestations of the album as baseless rumours. Others still assert that Chrome Dreams is merely the name incorrectly attributed to a collection of recordings that were not released, but that these songs were later re-recorded in different styles and included on subsequent albums. Young himself played off the stories by releasing Chrome Dreams II in 2007. The clearest explanation he has given of Chrome Dreams is as follows:

“What Chrome Dreams really was, was a sketch that Briggs drew of a grille and front of a ’55 Chrysler, and if you turned it on its end, it was this beautiful chick…I called it Chrome Dreams.
In essence Chrome Dreams is either a snapshot in time of something, a distinctive view that can later be replicated, albeit with a different take or viewpoint, or simply a fantasy state of mind that never existed. It is also the name that David Lunney has chosen for the opening show of Pallas Projects + Studios’ new series of short shows under the banner of ‘Artist-Initiated Projects’. Lunney plays on the mythology and the conflicting views of what Chrome Dreams is, reappropriating it for his latest body of work, which itself is an alternative view of the landscapes of the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. On a base level there are parallels with the reflective nature of the grille described by Young and the apparatuses Lunney uses to create his work. His practice, one which he himself describes as “undertaking [a number] of protracted art processes”, sees the artist create devices which he then brings to the Dublin and Wicklow mountains to photograph the landscape. These images are later rendered in paint or edited as photographs. The creation of these devices, which include mounts for cameras, is a protracted process in itself, with Lunney constructing each bespoke device from scratch in his studio.

Chrome Dreams by David Lunney

Chrome Dreams begins with a sculpture which is based around a sheet of ArtGlass™. This completely clear glass acts an invisible platform for a variety of reflective elements. This portable sculpture was brought to a forest in Ballyedmonduff (Dublin Mountains) where it was photographed in a variety of positions. Two of these photographs have been rendered as drawings. These strange and complex drawings are always the goal of this process; in a sense of reverse-engineering the imagery from the initial sculpture.
