Comment of the Moment: Neil Young Solo: Madison, Wisconsin, January 24

The Comment of the Moment is from Neil Young Solo: Madison, Wisconsin, January 24 by terryfunku:
I attended both gigs (and the crowd was much more well-behaved in Madison). For the 23rd, I considered Harvest Moon an ode to Pegi, and on the 24th, I believe even more so that Razor Love was in that same vein. Razor Love alone made Madison worth the price of admission, as did Cortez the Killer and Thrasher the previous evening.

I recorded both nights from the balcony. I'm in the process of producing them now. It's rather tedious, turning an acoustic gig recording into an enjoyable listen that doesn't cause your head to explode from audience noise/applause (and even more so since I'm quite anal in my quest for a near-perfect listening experience).

In Milwaukee, I scolded any vocalizations near me, as my journey had cost me $240 this night/$205 for the next night, the art of getting my gear in, attending 3 prior shows over 12 years at a cost of about $700, etc. all in the hope of hearing an acoustic Cortez, Thrasher, or Ambulance Blues at some point. This pilgrimage was seemingly being rewarded and I wasn't about to have this climax stained by some dweebs who were comfortable pissing on their neighbors' enjoyment. My scoldings will hopefully be suppressed into the sonic ambience of the recording as I make my edits.

In Milwaukee, I shushed the guy-next-to-me's kid as I quickly distinguished the opening rhythm of Cortez (and began internally sublimating, having to release a few awe-struck sighs). Within a few seconds of that I also chastised the guy behind me who had been making off-rhythm percussive noises during a few of the prior songs, as well as other random hoots whenever he got an ear boner. As soon as he began talking, I turned and blurted out "Stahhp tawkin'!" In response, he softly whispers aloud, "That's the first thing I've said?" :P

And you know what? After that, it was the fuckin' final one as well. No local incursions for the rest of the evening.

It was a beautiful 2 night experience. My only regret is not having the money to catch the remaining 4 nights in Minnie. There are really only 3 songs remaining on my dream sheet now: Ambulance Blues, Give Me Strength, and White Line (acoustic).
Thanks terryfunku for the comment. No regrets. We get what can get, when we can.

And thanks for trying to keep "the peace". While some may feel that this atmosphere feeds into a "prima donna" complex -- from everything we know in publishing this blog -- being able to enjoy Neil acoustic in a majestic setting, undisturbed by neighbors, is paramount to the experience.

As we sometimes remind ...

...... is pirate recording Neil's shows allowed ?
... i myself do not know, but I assume from your comment re: "the art of getting my gear in" that it is not.
..... does Neil set aside a section for tapers like the Dead did ? Those sections were not set up just for the convenience of the tape heads, they also enabled the rest of us to enjoy the show w/o being told to "Stahhp tawkin'!"
........ now I for one, wholeheartedly agree w/Thrashers regular posting of the 'when NY is playing, you STFU' card. And i would most likely make that sentiment well known to any drunk sitting nearby hollering "freebird' or talking w/his GF on the phone & phkng with everyone around me's 'once in a lifetime' sonic experience.
..... but to go off on someone for interfering w/ your pristine, illegal 'tape session', then coming on an internet forum bragging about it (no matter how many shows you've seen/taped or how much you spent doin' it) seems rather gauche.
.... of course, given the last half of your thread name, that likely does not bother you a bit.
..... maybe ya oughta enjoy the actual experience & give yourself to the moment (ie: in the hope of hearing an acoustic Cortez, Thrasher, or Ambulance Blues at some point)... w/less concern for stealing what the Shakey One gives order to edit/relive later, eh
.......... it's all one song anyway.

Thanks Mark.

Actually, we waffled a bit on whether to highlight this a "Comment of the Moment".

But, Neil clearly aborted "Olden Days" on Night #3 b/c of the "woo woo"s from the crowd. Maybe not noticeable on the stream, but Neil was clearly irked and then went on to get quite fired up about it.

He ended up not playing Ohio for the 1st tie on these acoustic shows, so a real loss for that audience.

So, like with everything, there's a fine line here somewhere. a very fine line.

At 1/31/2019 05:02:00 PM, Blogger Unknown said... could tell Neil was annoyed on the live stream. The way he mockingly rose up and mimicked the woo-ing was something I had never seen. The opening guitar work of the next song (DBTR) was very angry.

Yes, the WOO! was quite loud in the theater, and it came right after Neil sang about losing friends but still having them in his heart. Since it was a new song, I imagine those lyrics are especially important to him.
I'm not sure what will happen tonight. Northrop Auditorium is the biggest venue he'll be playing (close to 3000 seats), so there is an increased chance of more out of place crowd noise.

@mark - Neil does not encourage taping to the extent some artists do (like taper sections/soundboard patches), but he also has not objected to the recording and trading of his shows. The main torrent sharing site, Dime a Dozen, is pretty strict about respecting artist wishes and has never received a request from Neil's camp to have his shows banned (though Crosby, Stills, Nash and Richie Furay all have done so). And the recordings are a godsend for those of us who can't follow him around the country, so thank you tapers!
