MORE CANCELS: Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse “Love Earth Tour” Leg #2 & Beyond

Sting Replaces Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse as Headliner @
Beyond Bourbon & Beyond 2024 Festival
(Click photo to enlarge)

As if the news of cancellation of all remaining dates of Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse “Love Earth Tour” Leg #2 wasn't bad enough ... it gets worse.

Now we have the announcement that Sting has replaced Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse as the headliner for the Beyond Bourbon & Beyond 2024 Festival due to   “Covid consequences.”

So not only has the Canada Leg #2 canceled, along with 2 Texas dates and Chicago date but Ohana Festival and Hollywood Bowl dates are canceled, as well, per Sugar Mountain.

So that leaves the big question on Farm Aid 2024, Saratoga Springs.

Normally by this time of year, Farm Aid has announced venue, artists, ticket sales, etc.  But here we are in mid July and nothing officially from Farm Aid whatsoever.

Neil Young Archives has provided very limited info on what is happening.  Although Neil continues to answer letters as recently as yesterday July 15.

So, “Covid consequences.” Really?!

Well, very, very hopefully,  no damage done by the needle ...

NEW DATE: Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse - Ohana Festival, Dana Point, California, 2024-09-28

 Love Earth Tour
Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse

A new Neil Young concert date has been announced for Ohana Festival, Dana Point, California on Sept 28, presumably w/ Crazy Horse.

The Ohana Festival will headline Pearl Jam the day before and after the Neil gig.

Per comment by GDTRFB71:

[Eddie] Vedder traditionally plays solo or with his side band Earthlings at Ohana, but performed with Pearl Jam for the first time at a series of shows there in 2021.

Vedder has also guested on numerous occasions with Ohana artists such as Liz Phair, Johnny Marr and the Killers, so it wouldn’t be a major surprise if Young and Pearl Jam team up in some form that weekend.

Comment of the Moment: Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse* 2024 Love Earth Concert Tour

Crazy Horse w/ Micah Nelson
(replacing Nils Lofgren)
image via Rusted Moon

For the turnstiles ... yet again.

Whenever Neil Young goes on tour, there always seems to be a hitch somewhere along the line for the fans. (See "I said solo...they said acoustic")

"I said solo... they said acoustic" - 2011 T-Shirt
(see Neil Young News)

So who will be the "new" Poncho on the 2024 “Love Earth Tour” of Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse?

Our Comment of the Moment on  2024 “Love Earth Tour” of Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse by Jim asks some questions on the subject of Crazy Horse band members:

Somebody's gotta sit down with Springsteen and just be like “Listen man...the *10-piece* E-Street Band will be fine without Nils for a brief Crazy Horse tour!

These guys have a rich history together and haven't had a chance to hit their stride on the road yet with Nils! Unshackle the chains for a bit, will ya?”

I got my hopes up when Billy & Nils did a Livestream interview shortly after “World Record” was released. Both of the guys were so proud of the new album. And they both agreed that “Chevrolet” in particular was a new plateau for this lineup...a moment when everything came together like magic. And Nils went on about how he was super excited to get into a big groove with it on a tour with the Horse....to really sprawl out and experiment with it and let it take on new life, as it's clearly an incredible jam vehicle!

I'm reminded of when Max Weinberg would occasionally take a hiatus as drummer for The Max Weinberg 7 on “Late Night with Conan O'Brien” to go out on tour with Bruce. He would probably rather get out there and make the big bucks...plus Bruce was counting on him. That said, his time on “Late Night” really allowed him to get a chance to shine and get real creative...and frankly, his playing was much more interesting as Conan's bandleader. I feel the same with Nils...that he's given much more freedom in Crazy Horse and room for experimentation.

I wonder which gig he really prefers when it comes down to it. Either way, the upcoming tour won't be the same without him and I'm disappointed that I had to find out he wouldn't be a part of it by randomly stumbling across a comment from Ralph Molina on Facebook that was left the day after the pre-sale!

I don't know about the rest of you all...but Nils not being on the tour seems like a critical piece of information to include in the official tour announcement email that Neil Young Archives sent out. An email that also included direct links to the pre-sale! How a simple statement in the introduction letting us know definitively that an official Crazy Horse band member with roots going back 50+ years won't be a part of the tour you're announcing at that moment wasn't a priority is beyond my comprehension. It lacks decency. I hopped onto the pre-sale without a second thought because one would have to assume an official tour announcement would address this sort of personell change. A lot of fans will be arriving to these concerts still expecting to see the great Nils Lofgren in the fold.

The response I received from certain fans on Facebook was that I need to “keep up” better. Bullshit. Judging by the number of reactions to Ralph's comment saying Nils was out, I was clearly not the only one surprised (and of course, disappointed).

Let's be honest....this could've and should've been handled a little better. A simple clarification was all it took.

With that said, I hope Micah surprises me (and that he lets Neil handle the bulk of the guitar solos.) 😎

We hear you Jim. The upcoming album FU has both Micah and Nils from the Toronto stealth gig. So actually would love to have both Micah and Nils on the 2024 Love Earth Concert Tour.

So who's going to talk to Bruce??

Neil Young says that he's ready to hit the road again | NYA

A Message from Neil | Neil Young Archives
 (Click photo to enlarge)

In A Message from Neil | Neil Young Archives, Neil Young indicates that he is ready to hit the road again. Maybe starting in July.

From a statement on his two recent appearances with Stephen Stills and Willie Nelson:

"... That made me want to play more. It felt so good to be up there after three and a half years... Maybe in July."

Neil Young in reply to a letter to the editor on NYA:

"I am looking for outdoor venues. safety for all."

So, we'll just have to wait and see.

Earlier this year, Neil Young said that "CONCERT TOURS are no longer fun".

Comment of the Moment: "It's over." ... "CONCERT TOURS are no longer fun" Says Neil Young | NYA

"CONCERT TOURS are no longer fun":  Neil Young on March 19, 2023
Photo @ Avery Fisher Hall, New York City, NY, April 24, 2011

Neil Young -- once again --  shakes the EARTH.

Earlier this week, Neil Young posted a statement saying that "It's over." ... "CONCERT TOURS are no longer fun".

Back in 2008, there was some rather heated arguments over ticket prices for Neil Young in concert that prompted an open letter from a fan.

Last time this happened, we thought everything on the subject of for the turnstiles had been exhausted. There were passionate debates and discussion of when art and commerce worlds collide.

While many long time Neil fans had pretty much resigned themselves to this inevitably over the past few years, some younger artists were appalled and outraged by the apparent betrayal by one's rock's elder statesman. (see thread on UMO@Unknown Mortal Orchestra | Twitter).

Which brings us yet again to our Comment of the Moment on "CONCERT TOURS are no longer fun" Says Neil Young | NYA  byBlogger Dionys said...

It's quite well-documented that Neil Young always has been tormented by the fact of his superstar status and his desire to be an honest and ordinary or real life person.

Nothing sums this up better than a David Briggs statement about the song "Ordinary People": "Neil knows nothing about ordinary people" (McDonough, Jimmy, Shakey, p. 621 footnote). Apparently it took a while for Neil Young to get over doubts and the Briggs verdict, because the song was released out of time context on CD II almost 20 years later. With the debate around ticket prices it is not a mere coincidence that this song currently is being played in the upper right hand corner of the NYA screen.

While I understand that a musician of a band unknown to me is getting cynical about luxury problems I feel inclined to accept Neil Young's statements regarding this current round of rock'n'roll circus as genuine and sincere positions. With the pandemic hiatus some people took a step back and were looking at their routines and attitudes and some didn't. There are things much worse than every once in a while asking the question "What were we thinking?" Briggs probably was right back then and his statement maybe still holds, but as has been stated above already very few present day superstars even tried to side with the regular kind.

Originally live shows were an operation to support the sales of an album. Then album sales plunged because everybody came to download their daily soundtrack for free. Many bands took to touring to compensate for tanking CD sales. Apparently this business scheme has come to an end now, too. How much money did the the short-changed touring band's audience spend on CDs, vinyl or tapes?

UMO charge a very affordable 37,50 Euros for their concerts in Düsseldorf and Berlin (Germany) in upcoming May, this being the price for a middle class restaurant dinner for one person. Lucinda Williams shows last January in Munich did cost 55 Euros and they are a lot better known to a German audience with much more money to burn than UMO audiences. As a commercial enterprise trying their luck on the European market UMO do not even come close to be playing in Neil Young's league.

The irate tweet somehow reminds me of Nirvana touring the Bavarian backcountry in 1989, a few months before "Nevermind" came out, the difference being UMO has been around much longer now than Nirvana had been back then.

As always, many thanks for your contributions here Dionys.  Interesting comment  -- and relevant -- quote by Briggs on "Ordinary People".

As we exchanged in our comments back and forth, this is a sad -- yet inevitable -- moment for us in the rustie grain communities.

First, this does not mean that we will never see Neil on stage again. While it sounds like no more grueling city to city tours, benefits, one offs and extended stays are still possible.  So, no, we haven't seen the last of Neil and he's not completely packing it up. Or so we think.

Way back in 2008, we started compiling our grievances with a series of  documentation on the TicketMaster monopoly and the destruction of the traditional artist and concert business.

In so many ways, this is nothing new. We saw a lot of this when Neil Young expressed artistic freedom so eloquently on the much maligned and misunderstood -- but beloved -- Greendale.

"CONCERT TOURS are no longer fun" Says Neil Young | NYA + Comment of the Moment - UPDATED

In a recent post on T-C | NYA headlined CONCERT TOURING IS BROKEN, an article by Ananya Bhattacharya,  states that:

"The Cure forced Ticketmaster to refund fans a portion of "unduly high" fees. In some cases, the fees were higher than the face value of the tickets to The Cure's US tour."
The article goes on to explain the complications of touring given the TicketMaster/LiveNation monopoly.

So what about that Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour in 2023?  Well, Neil Young makes a brief note on top of posts stating:

TICKETMASTER FEES at 30%

It’s over. The old days are gone. I get letters blaming me for $3,000.00 tickets for a benefit I am doing. That money does not go to me or the benefit. Artists have to worry about ripped off fans blaming them for Ticketmaster add-ons and scalpers.

CONCERT TOURS are no longer fun. CONCERT TOURS not what they were.

- ny

Which brings us to our Comment of the Moment on "Comment of the Moment: Photo of the Moment: Neil Young Concert in Dijon, France - 1982 Europe TRANS Tour" by Dionys:

As nobody is asking the obvious so far, I will: Is Neil Young's latest lament on NYA indicating that there will be no concert tours anymore?

Could it be be that after the pandemic and the need to adjust to eco-friendly tour standards a third obstacle, the absurd prices charged for show tickets in the US, will be clocking in the end of Neil Young concert tours? Neil Young writes that touring is no fun anymore if he personally has to justify outrageous ticket prices charged by the US ticket monopoly and scalpers.

At the age of 77 with nothing left to prove and also little further gain to be desired losing the fun in doing live concerts because of profiteering by third parties is no small loss.

Time Fades Away, indeed.

Thanks for this comment about tours Dionys.

At 1st, given the focus was the band The Cure, we did not too much stock into another band's take on the touring conundrum and the well known TicketMaster/LiveNation monopoly.  However, since Neil did post the Cure article on his site, there must be some agreement with the sentiment, presumably.

Since the post was about the Cure we skipped it here on TW.   But your comment made us reconsider the subject, as well as, we missed the significant Neil intro to article.

As you recall at the end of last year, we posted on Neil Young, Where Do We Go Now ... Again?   Essentially, this humble blog Thrashers Wheat has always been about the live concert experience with real time updates from fans around the world. With the various stipulations that Neil Young has made about performing publicly again,  there is serious debate on whether we've seen the last of "live" Neil

Thus, we ask our readers again: "Do we just pack it in and buy a pickup?"

Hello or Goodbye Neil Young???
Avery Fisher Hall, New York City, NY, April 24, 2011

(see Neil Young, Where Do We Go Now ... Again?   )

UPDATE - Post is blowing up and going viral.

Having been a touring musician since 1963, many of Young’s fans hailed his statement as a decree against the corporate structure coming from a place of experience. However, as a band currently touring, Unknown Mortal Orchestra did not appreciate him effectively calling time on concerts and claimed that his response comes from a position of privilege afforded by the same corporate indulgence he is now rallying against.

On Twitter, the band’s Ruban Nielson said: “Honestly: Neil Young fuckin’ pisses me off.” He then shared his comment on a Stereogum article relating to Young’s comments; it read: “I am literally in a bus on tour with a full band and crew all paying bills off this shit and I have to see some kajillionaire talk about how ‘it’s over’, fuck you old man.”

He added: “Neil Young has not helped a single current artist earn more streaming income. Neil Young will not help current artists earn fairer ticket income or harm these corporations at all. He is flexing on us about how much better it was in his day. Old man is not looking at my life.”

Continuing: “I understand that boomers think taking a vaguely ‘anti-corporate’ stance is somehow rebellious, but current society is the result of that, so I’m not sure how anyone can get mad at me for calling bullshit on it.”

He concluded his tirade against Young by adding: “Neil Young always thinks he’s ‘sticking it to the man’, bro from where I’m sitting you are the man.”

Ruban Nielson also offered up his own advice as to how to best counter the current situation. “The way to avoid dynamic pricing AND support your favourite band,” he opined, “is to buy tickets early. Let me know if Neil destroys Ticketmaster and Spotify. I’m sure it’s any day now.”

Neil Young

Regarding Neil Young, we are now going into Year #4 of his concert hiatus. Neil Young has not performed live in concert since Sept 21, 2019 at Farm Aid in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin.

In January 2022, Neil Young announced on NYA that he has no 2022 tour plans "Until my bus is electric".

In November 2022, Neil Young said he wants "to do a self-sustaining, renewable concert tour with healthy, organic, farm-made, homegrown food at the venue concessions.

No word yet on Hollywood Bowl concessions.
