NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES TIMELINE CONCERT OF THE MOMENT: Halifax, Nov 5, 1996 w/ Crazy Horse

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
From Concert Film Year of The Horse (1996)

A new  Timeline Concert of the Moment is now streaming on NYA.

The latest Timeline Concert is from the Broken Arrow tour w/  Crazy Horse at Metro Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on Nov 5, 1996.

From The Flying Scotsman | Patreon:

The 5th November 1996 Neil Young and Crazy Horse show from Halifax, Canada has never circulated amongst fans…

…not even as a bootlegged field recording.

That changes today, because Neil’s archivists have just released the entire gig—professionally recorded from the mixing desk—as a website exclusive “timeline concert”.

It’s basically a new live album in its own right, a full-show accompaniment to Year of the Horse.

If you’re an NYA subscriber, be sure to take a listen (and let me know in the comments what you think).

I will say, right off the bat, that I’ve always wanted to hear this gig —

After all, any setlist that finishes with the one-two punch of the final two songs here (I won’t name them, just in case you want to enjoy the authentic concert experience without a setlist) is certainly an eye-grabber.

But does the actual experience live up to the imagined one?

Is "Down By The River" on Early Daze Album Really Take #1? + Comment of the Moment

Early Daze - Vinyl
 Neil Young with Crazy Horse
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Last month, the archival Early Daze album by Neil Young and Crazy Horse  of ten early studio recordings was released and greeted "somewhat eagerly" by fans.

We say "somewhat eagerly" because our calling the release "non-essential" -- due to containing unreleased versions, alternative mixes, stereo mixes instead of mono -- was roundly pushed back on here in comments.

A new Neil Young with Crazy Horse album titled Early Daze, which is comprised of ten early studio recordings, will be released on  June 28.

Turns out, there have been a few revelations with Early Daze release. Not the least of which is whether the classic jam "Down By The River" was really the very take of the song?

Our Comment of the Moment on REVIEWS: "Early Daze" Album by Neil Young and Crazy Horse by Ron:

I have been pondering the Down By The River 'is it really take one' question myself.

It does indeed sound like the EKTIN version apart from the vocals, but could they really have nailed that performance on 'take one'?. Perhaps, if it had previously been rehearsed, but we know how Neil usually likes to work. According to the recording dates on NYA both versions were recorded on the same day. Ultimately it doesn't really matter, it sounds great, but I remain curious - maybe I will pen a Letter To The Editor and ask Neil.

When Early Daze was first mentioned I mistakenly assumed it would include recordings that predated EKTIN, but apart from the versions of DBTR and Cinnamon Girl they were all in fact recorded post EKTIN. Maybe some of the other songs that appear on Early Daze were tried for EKTIN as well but weren't up to scratch at that time. I have been really enjoying listening to Early Daze though, great sound and performances. I also enjoy the studio banter and Neil's voice sounds so young!

I reread some of the passages in Shakey that relate to this period last night, and I was surprised to read about an apparently great version of Helpless that they played in the studio which was 'lost' because the recording engineer hadn't pressed the 'play' button. Is this version on 'Early Daze' the 'lost' version somehow now found, or a similar version or a completely different version?

Also I am very curious who is playing the electric guitar part on Helpless - is it Neil or Danny? The credits on NYA just say 'guitar' for both of them. To my ears the tone and sound of the electric guitar part sound unlike any other Neil performance I can think of, so maybe it's Danny?

I guess the point I was somewhat clumsily trying to make on DBTR take 1 or not was, regardless of how much rehearsing of it they had done (and I'm sure there would have been at least some), it seems to me quite remarkable to capture the fully formed performance of the the musical parts of the EKTIN released version on a first take. It's not one of Neil's simpler pieces either, so bravo to them!

Regarding Winterlong, Decade was a big part of my Neil Young journey, and although not one of my all time Neil favourites I have always enjoyed it. I always find it interesting to hear different versions of Neil's songs, acoustic versus electric, with Crazy Horse versus solo or with someone else, etc. The Early Daze version is a worthy addition in my opinion.
Many thanks to all the reviewers and comments - I have watched and read them all. Some great insights and observations - much appreciated.

Can't wait for Archives III !

Great question here Ron and many thanks for the CotM.

Maybe only Neil himself can clarify this?  Could the Early Daze version of "Down By The River" simply be just the same take as Everybody Knows but a different mix of vocals?  Or a different music take mixed with different vocal take?

A Few Thoughts on Album Early Daze by Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Early Daze
 Neil Young with Crazy Horse
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Here are a few thoughts on Early Daze by Neil Young and Crazy Horse by Scotzman.

There’s no real murder in it.

That’s what Neil Young once said about Down By The River, in its early daze.

Oh, many versions since—including, for example, the lunatic version from Dallas 1989—are vicious enough to make us question whether the narrator of the song has a body stashed underneath his bedroom floorboards.

But that’s in the future. Listening to the newly-released edit of the original 1969 studio version of Down By The River (the same band performance, but with an early lead-vocal overdub and different backing vocals), there’s not only no murder, there’s no suspicion of murder, either.

It’s sensitively performed. But Lieutenant Columbo stays home with his wife.

1969 feels like a different era… a very different era. Bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina are 25 years old. Neil Young is still 23, and is decades away from writing Cocaine Eyes, Eldorado or Rockin’ In The Free World.

Even Like A Hurricane doesn’t exist! Neither do the big Rust-era “amplifiers”.

Mirrorball hasn’t been recorded yet; the members of Pearl Jam are only about 3 years old.

For those of us either not yet born or still very young in 1969, it’s a time we don’t remember, but instead *imagine*. We see it on a movie screen in our minds. Palm trees, bright sun, classic American cars, a slightly gritty and grainy picture. The music on Early Daze is the soundtrack.

In 1969, Neil is still finding his range as a performing artist. He’s still discovering he can play different characters, each representing a different part of his psyche.

But more than that, there’s a through-and-through innocence to the sound of these recordings. Jangly and bright and care-free. Slipping down as easy as honey liqueur, with a touch of edge as the alcohol hits.

A rolling start.

Before super-fame. Before the fed-into-the-waste-disposal-machine grind of the Time Fades Away tour.

Back when Danny Whitten was still alive.

Consider: If we were to make a two-part movie about Neil Young’s career (working title: “Before and After”), where would we put the dividing line… the gap between before and after?

One temptation, I think, would be to start ‘part two’ in 1996: just after Neil’s producer David Briggs died.

But of course, Briggs’s immense influence on Neil’s music has carried on beyond his death. That’s why a recording like, say, Walk Like A Giant has such spiritual guts to it. Because others—not least guitarist Poncho Sampedro—have carried the torch and kept the spirit alive.

Instead, perhaps, the second film should begin with the aftermath of Danny Whitten’s death in 1972.

Because that’s when everything changes. That’s when the sun goes in, and when the chilled and relentless rain falls into greasy urban puddles.

Listen to Winterlong on Early Daze… then listen to the agonized (and perhaps artistically superior) version on Decade — recorded after Danny’s death.

Listen to Heart of Gold on Harvest… then listen to the grating, tone-deaf din of Tuscaloosa.

Listen to the newly-released Down By The River, innocent at heart…. then watch the thrilling slasher version from Concord 1993.

Listen to Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown… then listen to Mellow My Mind.

Listen to Leave the Driving (a story of drug-related death/murder) and Carmichael (a story of the ensuing grief).

It’s not just the “ditch” period. It’s everything since Danny died. The music—metaphorically, at least—is haunted.

In the early seventies, Danny Whitten was a very sick man. He needed help, and he didn’t get it. That’s the tragedy. It’s no wonder the next few years of Neil Young music are so bleak, so tortured.

Drummer Ralph Molina said “we should’ve been able to do more for Danny”. And on one level, maybe he’s right.

But of course, it’s near-impossible for any one person to know *how* to help. How, exactly, do you help a man addicted to heroin? It’s not a question most of us—self included—are trained how to answer.

It’s a bit like the question “how do you help a family member who is clinically depressed”?

Everybody wants to help… nobody (other than a trained specialist) knows how. The end result is that nothing gets done, with no malicious intent whatsoever.

I know Neil has blamed himself, so has Ralph, so have Danny’s other friends. That’s because they are good people who care. Not because they’re actually to blame.

It’s one of those situations where we wish we could change the past, but can’t. Nobody intended for Danny to die, but that didn’t stop it happening.

In 1973, “all that glitters is not gold”. “Everything’s cheaper than it looks”. Neil Young has found fame, but the trappings of fame have made him unhappy. And along with his bandmates, he feels a great deal of guilt about Danny’s death. Tequila and art take the place of therapy sessions, and one way or another, the survivors find a way through.

Here’s Neil himself, speaking to biographer Jimmy McDonough about the end of the early daze of Crazy Horse:

“We knew what we had. We all knew it was really good. Then to see it get f**ked up was really depressing. Seeing drugs come in and f**k it up, seeing the whole thing just go downhill. The inexperience of not knowing how to deal with heroin use, not knowing what it was, being too young for certain kinds of decisions. But that was the hand I was dealt at the time. The destruction of Danny’s life…”.

The Early Daze album, meanwhile, comes before. Bright and relaxed; chilled out, with an effortless rock ‘n’ roll edge. Neil records with his show-biz buddies CSN—his day job, of sorts—and then has fun playing with Crazy Horse in his spare time.

The in-studio banter is relaxed and charming and inviting; the music, too. It’s a record that documents a band enjoying the journey of making art for its own sake. With David Briggs in the control room: the ringleader, the motivator. Another unseen and much-missed member of Crazy Horse.

And with Danny Whitten still alive, still healthy, sharing the spotlight, playing and singing beautifully, for us all to hear and enjoy.

-Scotsman.

Concert Memories of Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse in Bristow, Virginia on May 11, 2024

Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse

To say that we were blown away by the Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse concert in Bristow, Virginia on  (May 11) would be a bit of an understatement.

Awesome to catch up with so many of our Rustie Grain friends who traveled from far and wide. To witness the band of brothers hitting their 80's so fearlessly was inspiring. And then we had a near perfect Saturday night concert in mid-Spring with a full horizon to horizon rainbow over the lawn just before concert time.

Like A Hurricane

"Show up at any high school graduation ceremony this spring and a teenage speechmaker might tell you that time flies, heals all wounds, is money, is a flat circle, can’t be turned back. Show up at any Neil Young concert this summer and a 78-year-old carrying an electric guitar will remind you that time really is a river, and that his music is a huge granite boulder plunked square in the middle of it."

Love And Only Love

Comes A Time

Crazy Horse

Now I can see why people have taken to the road to see multiple Neil Young & Crazy Horse shows. Right now the shows are getting longer and there is more variety. My wife and I drove up for about five hours to Bristow and arrived just as the heavy rain moved in. So we arrived a little too late for the soundcheck, tailgate experience and the rust fest the day before. Was looking forward to seeing everyone but it wasn’t to be.

Honestly, not a big fan of the digital ticket. I don't generally carry a phone with me, to be honest, and to have to get in and out of your seat is a pain for me showing your digital wallet each time. You had to pay an extra $6 for a printed ticket.

We got in about 6:45 PM as the rainbow formed so we checked out the polar bear at the Love Earth village first. Around 7:00 or so I took two books for Neil to the backstage area in a clear plastic bag. The guard said he couldn't be responsible for getting them backstage and he called an assistant on the bus. She came out to get the books that were my first one that I autographed, "Faces of Pilot Mountain," and Mr. Rufus Edmisten's autographed book, "That's Rufus: A Memoir of Tar Heel Politics, Watergate and Public Life." When I told Neil the themes of my book as I was writing it his response in the Letters to the Editor was, WOW.

That was really encouraging and now the Ancient American 8K video crew have filmed a documentary on the book which was one of the biggest gifts of my life. By the way, Mr. Rufus Edmisten is the lawyer who served President Nixon for the Watergate tapes in the White House.

Then Rev. Billy started his part of the show and I really enjoyed it. His get out in nature to your sacred spot really hit home with me. Love Earth, indeed!

There was an emotional weight to the show that was amazing. Our seats were right in line with the seated sound crew so the sound was spot on and perfect in Row Q. About the time he played "Powderfinger" they somehow dialed the sound in even more that was like shifting it into 5th gear or something. There was signage that we were being filmed by Daryl Hannah's film company.

My wife had gone with me to the second Rust Never Sleeps show outside Detroit in 1978 and she remembered the stage set-up but missed the Jawa's since they were only white coated scientists in Bristow. She sang right along on the acoustic set with just about everyone else. It was like standing in a choir instead of just listening to a choir. "Helpless" was a really good choice as a sliver of a moon came up on the right side of the stage but given the G5 solar event happening right during the concert it seems like Pocahontas would have been a great choice, too, that Thrasher wanted.

Clearly, the vivid bright rainbow was a sign that this was going to be a night to remember and it was...

And here is a video of entire concert.

0:00 / 1:51:16 NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE - FULL SHOW@Jiffy Lube Live Bristow, VA 5/11/24

From The Flying Scotzman's Bristow notes:

Micah found that sweet spot of unleashing the passion and keeping the tension on a tight leash.

Ralph is playing brilliantly. Billy knows they’ve cracked it — see the smile at the end of the song.

...

Again, the high points of this show are where we feel that Neil is fully in control of his instrument (playing with precision, not just thrashing around with no idea where the notes will land), and he can rely on Ralph to be right there with him.

No pressure, Ralph!

Actually, there is pressure. There’s no pressure and there’s lots of pressure, both at the same time.

See what I mean about tension? About keeping it on just the right leash? Too much tension, and the musicians are paralysed. Too little, and there’s no explosion, no thrill, no intensity.

None of us expect the more senior members of the band to be putting in the same energy as 1986; nearly 40 years ago.

The ace up their sleeve, the full deck of cards up their sleeve is they can still play with scary levels of intensity and precision and controlled tension. Which requires just a little physical energy, physical dexterity and nimbleness, and a lot of mental focus.

Thanks for the notes Scots!

Comment of the Moment: Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse's Love Earth Tour

Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Our  Comment of the Moment is on Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse's current Love Earth Tour by Jim:

Looking at the videos of this tour reminds me of going to the first or second show of the Rust Never Sleeps tour just outside Detroit.

I was a cub reporter for the Ypsilanti Press at the time. Had seats in the center section in the 10th row. My brother and I got to the venue early and since I was writing about it they let us in early. As we were walking down to our seats at the Pine Knob Music Theater I noticed someone at the soundboard and walked over. As I got closer I realized it was someone that was on the inside of the David Crosby album.

Introduced myself and my brother and said, "you look familiar. Is your picture on the inside of the David Crosby album?"

"Yes, that is me, I'm Elliott Roberts," he said.

Nobody was in the venue so we talked for about 15 minutes and I asked for a set list but he said there wasn't one. Then he offered to meet me after the show and pointed to the left side of the stage. He asked me where I was sitting and it was really close to there. Come right there and I'll answer any questions you have about the show. He was a man of his word and was right there as Neil walked off the stage. Got all the new songs right that night and my review was published for the afternoon edition of the newspaper. It might have been the first one of the tour or a close second.

From then on I mailed everything I wrote to him and never had any trouble getting a press and photo passes. Once he asked me if I had an extra copy of the Rolling Stone piece on the 1974 tour for the archives and I did so sent it to him. After that I would sit in the row in front of Scott & Bob Young at the Detroit and Lansing, Michigan shows.

As we parted from talking at the soundboard that night before the acoustic set of Rust Never Sleeps I said those are the largest fender amps I'd ever seen.

"Oh yeah, it is going to be loud," Elliott said shaking is head in an affirmative way.

When we got to our seats I realized everything was fake and was so embarrassed with my younger brother. The ads for the show were for Dolly Parton to open and then Neil Young. Later they changed it to Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The talk before the tour was that it was going to feature "Comes A Time" material and so everyone was thinking "Harvest" type songs but nobody had heard the new material (this must have been about the time of the bullet holes in the LPs).

Wish I'd known what David Briggs looked like because I'm sure I walked by him a few times over the years but never met him.

So looking forward to seeing the show on Saturday night!!!

Thanks for all the memories over the decades here Jim.  Yes, looking forward to the show on Saturday night, as well.  And the eve before @  Rustie Grain Fest: Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse @ Bristow, Virginia - Friday, May 10.

Brother Alan in Seattle Goes to Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse in San Diego - April 25

"Neil Young levels SDSU"
Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse - San Diego, April 25
(Click photos to enlarge)

Last night, our  Brother Alan in Seattle went to the Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse concert in San Diego (April 25) and filed these updates to TW.

"Tonight Neil Young leveled SDSU. Somehow Micah (My -Cah) has given Neil new power! It was a Grunge sound Thursday, with an acoustic solo set in the middle. I have not seen power like this since Weld."

"Thrashing. Hardest Crazy Horse show since Weld… Grunge!"

"Incredible show, Micah brings out the Horse in full gallop!"

Flying the TW Colors out west!

"But those seagulls are so far out of reach ..."

"Out here on the beach ..."

San Diego - April 25

Thanks for report and updates Alan!
