New Video: Cough Up The Buck$
Neil Young - Cough Up The Bucks
New Video: Cough Up The Buck$
This is the fourth hand-made video from the "Fork In The Road" album. Neil has been quietly making these videos completely on his own, with nothing more than a simple camera and an idea, and more are coming as Neil continues to shoot each day. These revolutionary videos do more with a zero-dollar budget than a $300,000 dollar budget could ever dream of - they're pure, renegade Neil Young at their best.
Just un-frickin' believable!
Thanks BSM & Liza!

Sorry, Miles, it seems like Neil's "The Cool". ;)
haha this is amazing!!! sweet song, too!
OMG, Neil in a tie?!!?
Uno Take
WOW!Well melody seekers you got a good one during the verses I think.I said it before. This album is going to be WAY better than CD2.I just think Neil is a little more passionate with this one.Neil you F***'N RRROOOOOOOOCK!!!:)Longer may you run.
The Mugwump
Hardly a good song, but it has still a cool riff and a sweet little melody, but it wont grow on you. But like Dylan said.. even when Neil is crappy.. he still got a melody that elevates it.
Hardly a good song! But it has a cool riff anyway. If one-notish! And a sweet little melody in there too. It is just as Dylan says... even when Neil is crappy..he still got a melody that elevates it.
Hmmm....better than CD2? I cannot get on board with that.
A very sparse song, cool riff and nice melody but no meat on the bones. It's like he wrote a chorus and a a catch phrase but forgot the verses, the song has virtually no lyrics.
Wow, all the criticism about the new songs don't matter anyhow..... 'My' version of NY continues to reflect my own views on stuff and this song I love. The sparseness of it it chilling, it is a bleak view wrapped in NY warmth. I get it. I feel it. I love it. If anyone else tries to 'compare' the new stuff to any earlier stuff - get out of town! (a polite way of saying Fuck off!).
This NY is a multimedia experience - the songs and video's are like music and lyrics - it is the future (not the first time film/video has enhanced a song or a message!).
And I do not support Obama or most of his crackpot team of tax cheats and narrow minded leftists - he will not solve our problems. We do have a big problem - answers on a postcard please!
Sack Geitner - NY for Treasury Sec.
I like it.... good riff, could have been on Rea*ctor, one of my favorites. I am looking forward to the new album,eh?
peace, y'all
Neil for Treasury Sec. !
Ha! Let's set our sights high. How about Neil for President? Or maybe just Secretary of Rock (music)
Where was this filmed? Doesn't look like Cali.
Maybe Kansas? Doesn't look like KS. Of course never been to KS so what do i know.
Great vid. It doesn't look like Neil rehearses too much. Just shoot & go.
Screw those slick MTV videos. Think MTV will play this.
Very cool! Love to see this live. Kind of reminds me of the Geffen years with the "Landing on Water" videos.
Just sit back and be entertained. Thank you Neil!! Bring on the London Ont. Concert.
Cool but I liked three other videos better. This one's kinda weird...but not too bad.

haha, wow, I feel like I went back to the 80's-- video, music, n' all. Neil's riding the 80's comeback trend. Where's Devo?
"Revolutionary videos"
Hey Thrasher - who stole your brain? Do you really think these are revolutionary videos? Well, in what way?
Musicians and non-Musicians alike have been making shaky videos like these for YEARS AND YEARS.
Oh, because Neil is doing it, that makes it cool and, umm, REVOLUTIONARY.
c'mon now......
Wage Slave. It was filmed in Wichita, Kansas. My hometown. Neil is cruising Douglas heading West towards downtown. He even passes my old High School. From where I grew up, I could walk to the Linc Volt garage without hitting one stop light. When you pull into downtown, there's a bridge you drive under with an old train engine sitting there on the tracks as you pass underneath. Cool song and for me a very cool and surreal video. It's Wichita, Kansas for Christ sake!
It's called 'Hero Worship' and Thrasher is the leader in the wheat field. They are all "revolutionary", this one is "un-frickin' believable", the one for Light A Candle was so beautiful that "words can't begin to touch it". I guess he's worried we might make up our own minds about their worth if he doesn't guide us in the right direction.
Anonymous, your comments re "Hero Worship" remind me of the old joke about the Greek parachustist - Condesending! Stand back and take a good look what makes you think that you are so special. What is so wrong about Thrasher enjoying the new music and videos more than you. Does it take away from your pleasure. I think not. Why don't you follow the Bambi rule.
Hang in there Thrasher. I for one agree that the videos are great. Haven't seen Dylan or Springo try this before.
Percy
And I haven't seen Neil come up with a grammy winning album or an oscar... to each their own I guess! What's Dylan or Bruce got to do with it anyway? Neil's better because he makes cheap videos of crap songs? Give us a break.
Cool song. It could have been on Reactor. In 20 years time everybody will call it a masterpiece.
Anonymous, you are one funny bastard!
I just don't take you very seriously if that's ok. I would be gutted if it turned out that Neil saw making music as a competition for who gets the most awards. Same goes for Bob and Bruce.
Luckily from the whole Archives campaign/anti-campaign and these new videos it is apparent that Neil doesn't give a toss about anyone's opinion so I think we can leave your argument aside.
Besides, Neil's already got his MTV Video of the Year award for the excellent 'This Note's For You' ;-)
Thos, UK.
Sorry folks, but this must be the dumbest video Neil made so far. I mean, the only cliché missing in this high school flick is the blonde breaking out the champagne and dancing on old Neil's lap. Well, maybe he wanted that too, but Pegi got pissed right? And the song, well.... I rest my case.

Hi Thrasher,
thanks for very good work with Thrasher's wheat!
I just wanted to ask you why you allow anonymous posts as commentaries for the news. Everybody should of course be able to express there opinion but I think that everybody also should have the courage to expose who they are. Anonymous postings bring out the worst in people and I think therefore that only registered users should be able to post in order to avoid flaming. The recent posts from "Anonymous" about Cough up the bucks shows this...
This is of course just a suggestion and I fully support any decision that you take!
Best regards,
Daniel
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the suggestion.
Believe me when I say that this is something we've struggled with ever since Greendale.
Neil fans who love Neil's music but hate everything he does. Quite perplexing, eh?
One who loves Neil's music so much yet is so critical of everything the man says, sings, or does.
What to do?
Well, we have a number of options which we've explored over the years.
At the moment, we have a Comments Policy which we try and enforce to a degree.
We delete a bunch of crap that doesn't comply all the time.
Registered comments would certainly alleviate the prblem except we think it would tremendously reduce the range of comments.
So at the moment, we'll keep things open and try our best to ignore the 4% Club comments.
Truly, one has to understand that the negativity is coming from 4% of Neil fans. Certainly, a sign of desperation that the 4% Club thinks that they can sway 96% of Neil fans' thinking. They're in their "last throes" as Dick Cheney would say.
Thanks for the feedback and reading!
peace,

No news on this one?
Because Sound Matters
Obviously that rude post was some phony immature jerk.
I'll try to figure out how to log in to avoid confusion.
My post on the release info was straight forward and accurate.
-Archives Guy
Good way to continue the never ending story on a post where there's some discussion on anonymous posting right here on this site. You did have a bloggers name didn't you? Well, it's confusion anyway. Hope the real information is true. There's nothing I can find on NYdotcom? BSM
Back to the video....I bet Neil had the suit and tie with him in Wichita because he thought he was going to DC with LincVolt to meet some senators and congressmen. We'll see if when that does happen if he's wearing this. Or will he be rocker cool wearing no tie/suit. Fun video!
Thrashette
Thrasher and Thrashette must be record company pawns creating hype. This shit sucks. PERIOD.

Hey, now it's online at NeilYoung.com
Isn't that great news?

Thank you, Archives Guy, for telling us the great news.
I thought, I saw a personal message before too, but now it seems to be gone again....
Liza,
You are welcome...at least someone values my help.

Thrasher, you're completely missing the point. I don't hate Neil, or his new songs, or the new videos or whatever. I don't like 'em much though! It's the slavish worship of the man, the new songs, the new videos etc that I have a problem with. You'd think by the way you introduce these new songs and videos to us, Neil has produced another Freedom or Ragged Glory. And it's convenient how you and others here just attack the negative posters without addressing their complaints - you never did answer the question posed about why these new videos are 'revolutionary'. Or why you used the term 'great lyrics' when unveiling Johnny Magic on us. It's the insistence that the Emperor's new clothes look just fantastic that riles me, not the Emperor himself - if he wants to ride around stark naked, good for him - he's earned the right. Just stop telling me what a pretty sight it is please.
To Anon @ 3/21/2009 04:10:00 PM:
So exactly why should I expend energy on responding to your anon critiques day after day?
Also, it is patently false to say your gang's criticisms have gone unaddressed. I'm calling bullshit when I see it.
Here's your smackdown here.
Did you miss it?
And the reasoning for calling the JM vid 'revolutionary' was explained so stop spreading lies.
Here's the deal. Register an ID, establish a handle, come out of the closet, make a detailed counter-argument and I'll debate away.
In the meantime, the anon drivebys are just distractions.
peace,

ps - since when we were not allowed to have opinions here??
As unfortunate as it may seem, I believe that Neil's creativity began to take a dive around the time that he quit smoking weed! I could be off the track on this one, however, it is quite obvious that his most recent contribution's have been lacking that 'other worldlyness' that seemed to be true of his past effort's. The quality of his most recent work is unlikely to become more relevant irregardless of how many times you may try to listen to it, it certainly will not pass the test of time. It's almost like he feel's that he is running out of time that he is putting out so much product like a machine, rather than to wait upon the "muse' to inspire the creativity that we all know he is more than capable of. He should just go ahead and release the 'Archives' and wait until he has something more relevant to release. It seem's that quantity has won over quality here, however, that is just one 'lifelong fan and admirer's' opinion.
For those whining about Neil's recent output, I played Greendale to death and still do. It's one of my favorites. But that's just me! From what I've heard so far...Fork in the Road will get plenty of playing time too. Crank it up! If it's too simplistic for some of you, your loss. There's still a lot of soul in the crusty old guy! Come back to Dallas Neil! We miss you!

Doesn't matter what everybody thinks about Fork.

Just singin' a song - Neil in a boat....
Enjoy!
I'm sure this has been mentioned before - but I think Neil's made an entire career out of disdaining most outside standards of quality control - and we're the better for it! So what if the new songs don't hit you like a hurricane? At this point, I'm glad the man is alive and commenting on the times in which we live, and the recent spate of tunes ensures the long-time fans that he'll never become an oldies act.
I recall a quote from Willie Nelson, when asked if he was thinking about retirement (a paraphrase) - "I play music, and I play golf. Which one should I quit?" I figure Neil will keep releasing whatever he sees fit until he's physically unable, and that's fine by me...and many more, I wager.
Well said kpdennis!!
