We know that feeling very well here at TW  -- what with all of the never ending emerging outtakes posted to NYA. Like, say for example, the recent NYA outtake of "White Line" w/ Crazy Horse from 1975.

What an outtake, eh?

Or how about outtakes from Neil Young's "Le Noise": "You Never Call"?

Or the  unreleased 1971 Neil Young & Stray Gators Outtake: "See The Sky About To Rain"?

Comment of the Moment: Outtakes from Neil Young's "Le Noise": "You Never Call"

Earlier this week, outtakes from Neil Young's "Le Noise" were posted to Neil Young Archives.   

The outtake "You Never Call" continues to "wallop" fans with the stunning -- and heartfelt -- pump organ tribute to the late, great Larry "L.A." Johnson, Neil Young's long time film maker and producer who passed away in 2010. 

Here is the Comment of the Moment on Outtakes from Neil Young's "Le Noise": "You Never Call" by Scotsman:

Le Noise was an interesting album, lots of fun sounds and explosions and good ideas from both Neil and Daniel...

But also more than a little bit "half-baked". An impressive totem pole built on weak foundations.

What the extended Le Noise documentary proves is that there was a version of Le Noise *actively in development* that was much more developed, much more nuanced, much *more* interesting.

Almost like a spooky "round the crackling campfire at midnight" set of folk songs. And like Psychedelic Pill, a "look back through the years" soundtrack to Waging Heavy Peace.

But the sessions changed focus — many of the early songs weren't so much built-upon as abandoned (or set aside 'til later). It's a bit like switching queues at the supermarket and starting from scratch.

A lot of the early work got left behind in favour of a series of slightly underwhelming, "cheap-and-cheerful" first drafts.

This gave Lanois more room to do his magic.... but I think the album flatters Daniel's art more than it does Neil's.

More on this in future, but I agree with Dan Swan and mshare about the pump organ You Never Call.

I'd go as far as to say it's not just more interesting and compelling than the guitar version, but more interesting and compelling than just about anything on the released album.

Outtakes from Neil Young's "Le Noise" are now streaming on Neil Young Archives.

In a post on Times-Contrarian | NYA by John O, we learn that 2 outtakes of "You Never Call" are now posted:

Previously unreleased but beloved by those of you who have had the pleasure of hearing the song live or seeing it in the Le Noise session documentary directed by CK Vollick or Jonathan Demme’s Journeys — I hope at least one person who has never heard it before can hear it for the first time now, and be walloped by the almost unbearable intensity of its grief.

Larry "L.A." Johnson: 1947 - 2010

 

As backstory, in 2010 Neil Young's long time film maker and producer Larry "L.A." Johnson passed away.

One of the outcomes of "L.A." Johnson's death was the Neil Young album "Le Noise", produced by Danial Lanois.  The album "Le Noise" does NOT contain the track, but was performed in concert during the 2010 and 2011 tours.

The video of Le Noise Sessions features the eight songs of the album, plus four "Le Noise" outtakes.

As we wrote back in 2010, "You Never Call" really encapsulates the mood and tone of the Twisted Road concerts. The ghost of L.A. fills the room and seems to hover over the stage. One can only imagine how hard it must be to sing a song about a dear friend -- who you have known and worked with nearly your entire professional life -- who then suddenly dies taking your son to a hockey game.

And we sat down and listened.

Expecting acoustic, we were instead presented with a fullblown electric concert. After five decades of performing, his voice and playing style are stronger than ever. I have never been to a rock concert before where the audience claps and yells like mad, then abruptly sits down in eager anticipation of the next song.

Once in awhile, someone would break out with a yell, but this was a theater full of Neil Young fans who wanted to hear whatever he wanted to share and that meant being quiet. For the next hour and a half, with an intermission too brief to grab a beer, from his White Falcon Gretsch to the Les Paul “Old Black,” he played one guitar after another, did a stint on a funky vintage pump organ and another on a piano sitting stage left.

We sat, listened, stood and clapped and sat again, having no idea of what song he was going to do next. We didn’t care. He gifted us with seven new songs that no doubt will become classics. I sat through “Help,” “Ohio,” and “Cinnamon Girl,” and all of the old songs, remembering those times.

In other Neil Young  release news, The Official Bootleg Series will now be released on October 29 beginning with "Carnegie Hall" disc. On November 5th, five more bootlegs will follow, including the long-awaited album with live recordings with "The Ducks" from the summer of 1977. The releases were previously planned for August and October.

The delays are due to the worldwide vinyl production logjam. See details on NYA.
