PONO Update #30 - May 28, 2014 Pono Team's Progress - For backers only

Laser etching Limited Edition PONO player
(Click photo to enlarge)

A new update has been posted on Pono Team's Progress - Kickstarter, along with cool little videos of progress including the laser etching of Limited Edition PONO player, production electronics and more.

Here's the backers only update:
Pono Team's Progress - June 2014

First we want to thank all of you, again, for your tremendous support in our hugely successful Kickstarter campaign. We’ve been overwhelmed by your enthusiasm and reception of Pono. We know many of you have been spreading the word about Pono and we truly appreciate it. In fact, there have been hundreds of requests from those that missed the Kickstarter deadline. For those of you with any payment problems or special requests, contact us at support@ponomusic.com. Please give us a few days to get back to you due to the large volume of emails. We’re working diligently to reduce the backlog.

We are making great progress on the development of the new and improved PonoPlayer (the one you pledged for), as well as the on-line store, the content delivery system, and the desktop media center application. We have established a number of key partnerships to help us expedite our development process.

We are proud to announce that we have reached a strategic partnership with JRiver (www.jriver.com
), who will be providing us with a Pono-branded version of their world-class desktop media center software. This software will be similar to the iTunes® desktop app in that it will allow you to manage your music, create playlists, sync your music to your PonoPlayer, access the PonoMusic store, purchase & download music to your desktop, do player firmware updates, etc.

We are also thrilled to announce our partnership with CloudCraze (www.cloudcraze.com ), an eCommerce platform that runs natively on the salesforce1® platform; as well as our partnership with SalesForce.com where the PonoMusic store will be hosted. We are using the CloudCraze/salesforce1® platform to develop a world-class social music store. We expect to have our PonoPlayer pre-order store (for post-Kickstarter pre-orders of PonoPlayers and some accessories) up and running in mid-to-late June. We will be automatically creating user accounts on our store for each of our Kickstarter supporters. Look for an email notification in June once your account is set up. You will need to login and ensure that we have your correct contact information and billing address.

Lastly, we are days away from finalizing a partnership with a world-class content delivery partner who has great expertise in the content management and quality management issues near and dear to us at PonoMusic. We will notify you once our partnership is finalized and let you know why we are so excited about this partnership. We have also begun the work with the major music labels in order to have the PonoMusic store on line with a very large, relevant and interesting content catalog by October. Stay tuned for more news on this front. This work will be on-going at Pono as we will continue to add content to the PonoMusic.com store every day after the launch.

Last but not least, we are excited to announce that Bruce Botnick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Botnick ) has joined the PonoMusic leadership team. He is a legendary audio engineer and record producer known for his work with the Doors, Love, Buffalo Springfield, the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, and many other artists. Also, on Bruce's list of credits are numerous motion pictures including the Star Trek movies (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0098567/ ). Bruce is responsible for establishing our content strategy and ensuring that we provide you the highest quality version of each recording sold in our music store. Bruce recently shared with the team the following graphic, which captures the state of modern recording today and depicts his motivation for joining Pono to help us save music from the lossy formats such as MP3.

State of Modern Music Recording

As for the PonoPlayers, we’ve built our first batch of new circuit boards incorporating the Ayre audio electronics and are beginning to build dozens of PonoPlayers in both California and in Shenzhen. These units will be used for testing everything from audio performance to the durability of the player. We will be exercising every function of the player thousands of times and are building testers to do some of this automatically.

Our very first board went to Charlie Hansen, founder of Ayre Acoustics, and he was ecstatic with the results of his design. Ayre has designed our audio system electronics in the PonoPlayer using the same principles used on his company’s amplifiers, DACs, and preamplifiers that are revered in the challenging world of audiophile standards. These products are famous for the use of discreet components (rather than off the shelf ICs), fully-balanced circuitry and a zero feedback design. The PonoPlayer project is the first time in history that technology of this caliber has been designed and built into a portable device. And from our listening experience, the results are spectacular and well worth the effort. We are grateful to Charlie and his team. This is all part of the Pono commitment to bring you an unmatched audio experience in a hand-held device.

Several of us recently returned from Shenzhen, China, where our terrific team at PCH is hard at work in preparing for several successive product builds, as well as testing and manufacturing process improvements. We visited several of the factories that will supply parts for the player and the factory that will be doing the final assembly and testing. We also visited the labs where we are still working to perfect the finishing and laser etching on the Limited Edition players.

Many of you have inquired about the types of PonoPlayers that will be available once we fulfill our Kickstarter commitments. We are currently planning to offer four models: yellow and black with a soft touch finish, each retailing for $399, a version finished in brushed chrome at $499, and a clear model at $499. The latter two models will likely include some special packaging and accessories.

To those of you that have asked about headphones, we are working on several offerings that we are very excited about. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for you to experience the flawless sound from Pono soundtracks, and do so at an affordable price. We also will be testing headphones from many of the major manufacturers and posting our recommendations on our site in a few months.

We will soon be moving into our offices located in the Potrero Hill area of San Francisco (see pics below). Finally, the team will all be located together. For those of you that pledged for t-shirts and posters, they will go out in June as promised. Lastly, we are on schedule to meet our Kickstarter commitments to deliver players beginning in October. We will continue to provide updates as we move closer.

Pono Team Planning the Layout of New Office

Pono Team Using Every Opportunity to Work Towards October Delivery!
We thank you for your support and patience as we work on bringing you the best Hi-Res music experience by October.
Thanks for update and Good Luck PONO team!

From Crosby, Stills, Nash Young Live 1974 Box Set Out This Summer | Music News | Rolling Stone by Andy Greene:
The set was produced by Joel Bernstein and Graham Nash. "This is the most difficult project I've ever done in my recording life," Nash tells Rolling Stone. "That's largely because of other people's agendas and trying to please four people at the same time. It only took us a year to actually do the physical work, but it took three or four years to get that work together."

One issue they faced was Neil Young's intense focus on audio quality. "Neil Young, God bless his cotton socks, has always wanted the audio to get as close to the recording experience as possible," says Nash. "He wanted us to do it in 24/192, and that's what we did. Of course, that happened one-third of the way into the project, so we had to redo an awful lot of stuff. But it sounds totally amazing. There's 40 songs and they'll show people that we were a very, very decent rock band."

Nine of the shows were professionally recorded on multi-track tapes. "We wanted the best performances of each song for this collection," says Nash. "So Joel and I listened to every single minute of the multi-track shows and chose the best. We'd take, say, the best performance of 'Almost Cut My Hair' and send it to David [Crosby] for his approval. We did the same with Stephen [Stills] and Neil."

The bonus DVD features eight songs filmed at the Capital Center in Landover, Maryland and Wembley Stadium. "The Capital Center was the one place back then filming concerts," says Nash. "We didn't even know they were doing it. It's a little funky-looking because we didn't light it for film or television, but I picked eight songs I thought were very representative of how we were then."

Despite the fact it draws material from multiple nights, Nash and Bernstein structured it like a typical show from the tour. "I wanted people to experience the show," says Nash. "We wanted to give people a seat in the 10th row in the middle so they can sit back and enjoy the show. It starts with an electric set and then we did an acoustic set, sometimes with bass and drums and sometimes not, and then ended up with a kick-ass last electric set."

Paul McCartney: Year 3116 and Neil Young: Year 1947 - A Tale of Two Artists

Paul McCartney's latest music video 'Appreciate' is quite revealing for us -- while creepily instructive.

The video is "Presented by Microsoft", takes place in the Year 3116 and introduces Newman the Robot (as in "New Man"). Newman the Robot is touring a human museum in a future where presumably humans no longer exist. Newman is drawn to the McCartney exhibit and ultimately they join together in dance.

Paul McCartney and Newman the Robot
(Click photo to enlarge)
We bring this up because of the recent reaction to Neil Young's new album A Letter Home which uses 1940's era recording technology. It seems that some Neil Young fans are finding A Letter Home a bit too retro for their tastes.

So we pose the following question: Which artist is using technology most creatively?

While this might seem a like a cute little game to play, consider how much of peers Paul McCartney and Neil Young are in their long history together. And consider how much the artists are taking two very different paths today in 2014.

Clearly, Young is on another of his journeys through the past and excursions into alien -- yet familiar -- territory. Using a 1947 Voice O'Graph recording booth for his latest album A Letter Home, some have observed that it's "so archaic, it’s cutting edge".

On the other hand, McCartney's video featuring happily interacting humans and robots seems to further a dystopian future vision known as "Transhumanism":
"The technological singularity, or simply the singularity, is a hypothetical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater-than-human intelligence, radically changing civilization, and perhaps human nature. Because the capabilities of such an intelligence may be difficult for a human to comprehend, the technological singularity is often seen as an occurrence beyond which the future course of human history is unpredictable or even unfathomable."

Neil Young performs "Needle of Death" in vintage recording booth

So to recap, McCartney and Microsoft are working together on robot technology. Neil Young and Jack White are working together on vinyl recording technology.

Speaking about Newman, McCartney said: "I woke up one morning with an image in my head of me standing with a large robot. I thought it might be something that could be used for the cover of my album NEW but instead the idea turned out to be for my music video for 'Appreciate'. Together with the people who had done the puppetry for the worldwide hit War Horse we developed the robot who became Newman."

(Out of the Blue, Into the Black)

Newman was also planned to join Paul McCartney on this Japan leg of his tour, which has just been postponed. (Get well soon Paul!)

And Crazy Horse will be joining Neil Young on his Europe tour leg this summer after postponing last year (Glad you're well Poncho!)

Laurel Canyon Exhibit at Grammy Museum: California Dreamin' Explores Music Scene in the ’60s, ’70s

A new exhibit on the Laurel Canyon music scene has opened at Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

From Grammy Museum’s new exhibit explores Laurel Canyon’s music scene in the ’60s, ’70s by Rob Lowman:
Of course, one of the musicians most identified with Laurel Canyon was Joni Mitchell, whose 1970 album “Ladies of the Canyon” refers to Laurel Canyon. It included the songs “Big Yellow Taxi,” “The Circle Game” and “Woodstock.” The latter became a hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Neil Young, who had joined the band at that point. They turned the meditative number into a rocker. Young, like Mitchell, had come from Canada. “The Circle Game” is said to have been written in response to Young’s “Sugar Mountain.”
More photos and details at Grammy Museum’s new exhibit explores Laurel Canyon’s music scene in the ’60s, ’70s.

Also, from our friend Jeff Allen who filmed these videos last Friday at the GRAMMY Museum:
Last Friday, I was invited by my friend of 40 years, Joel Larson, who was one of the early drummers from the Grass Roots, to the GRAMMY Museum, down by Staples Center. He was one of 7 panelists (see the notes on the video) discussing the music industry and living up in Laurel Canyon in the 60's-70's. I was in the front row and was armed with a video camera. Harvey Kupernik, one of the panelists, is the author of a new book that just came out a couple of weeks ago, "Turn Up the Radio", and he has one of my photos of Leon Russell in it.

The videos are well worth watching (if you're over 50). Wish I would have gotten some stills, but then I wouldn't have been able to shoot the video at the same time. Oh well...Enjoy it!

Held at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles on May 9, 2014, this was a panel of 7 members of the music industry that discussed "The remarkably rich sounds of Laurel Canyon and the sheer number of songwriters, bands, producers, artists, engineers and record company people who have lived and worked out of Laurel Canyon prove that Los Angeles is and continues to be a vital rock scene. We felt it was important to tell that story, right here in our hometown. Laurel Canyon was as much a mindset as it was a music scene," said GRAMMY Museum executive director Bob Santelli.
The panelists were:

1. Henry Diltz - Rock Photographer
2. Joel Larson - Grass Roots
3. Micky Dolenz - Monkees
4. Danny Hutton - Three Dog Night
5. Gail Zappa - Frank Zappa's wife
6. Harvey Kubernik - Music journalist
7. Art Podell - The New Christy Minstrels

Thanks Jeff! Very cool. Thanks for sharing videos. Definitely looks like a great exhibit to check out next time in L.A.

A Letter Home by Neil Young: "So archaic, it’s cutting edge"

As we've been reporting, a pretty diverse reaction to Neil Young's The Tonight Show appearance. Yes, it was unprecedented. Yes, it was pretty cool to see Neil, Jack White and Jimmy Fallon having a good time with their old/new toy.

But at the end of the day, what about the music?

Yes, what about the music? Or maybe more importantly -- what about the intent of the artist being true to his message and muse?

Well, whatever you do, don't call A Letter Home a "covers album", as Neil Young explained to Billboard:
"That's a term I really don't like, covers.

That misses the point of what the record is. It's actually more of a piece of performance art. It's actual songs. It's actually the performance of a song and the essence of a song. That's what it's about."
From a review on Restless and Real - Words and sounds from a shrinking world | A Letter Home by Douglas Heselgrave:
‘A Letter Home’ is pure; there’s very little show biz involved.

Maybe the most important thing the record communicates is that with a little practice, we could all learn to play these songs. Most of them don’t have more than three chords, and almost every Canadian of a certain generation could sing them – maybe even just as well - off the top of their heads with a little reminding and encouragement. And, maybe that’s part of the point. ‘A Letter Home’ dials down the mystique of the rock star culture and puts music back where it belongs – as an expression of life, joy in a shared experience, the simple pleasures of coming together with friends and family to sing. It’s so radical that it’s simple.

To paraphrase something Young once said about another album, ‘A Letter Home’ is so archaic, it’s cutting edge. The point he’s making is not complicated. The world is out of control and part of the reason is that people won’t put away their screens and talk to each other. Embedded in its simple grooves, ‘A Letter Home’ encourages us to throw out a lot of our useless shit, get the guitar out of the attic, tune it, start humming, sing, think of all the good things in life and send a letter home.

Thanks Neil!
Thanks Doug!

So there you go. A Letter Home - radical in its simplicity in these bewildering complex times. Maybe not what we wanted but just what we needed.

And that's OK.

A great little clip of Jim Jarmusch Q&A on working with Neil Young on 'Dead Man'.

Jim Jarmusch discussed working with Neil Young on the music for DEAD MAN in a Q&A during Film Society of Lincoln Center complete retrospective "Permanent Vacation: The Films of Jim Jarmusch."

Jim Jarmusch and Neil Young have quite a working history going quite a ways back into the 1990's. See more on Jim Jarmusch & Neil Young.

Neil Young on Jack White, Archives II and His Special Message to Mom | Rolling Stone

Fairly significant coverage and reaction to Neil Young's performance on The Tonight Show this week.

There were the usual detractors claiming it was all a "stunt", a "gimmick" -- just to try and sell some cover songs on vinyl. Not really sure how something is a "gimmick" that has never been before (cutting a record before a live audience on national TV)?

But could A Letter Home be more than just a quaint "covers albums" of old songs?

As we discussed this past weekend on TW Radio ( podcast), we find the exercise remarkable.

And we see it as an exercise like ARC or Dead Man or Shocking Pinks or any of his other many experiments. Some work, some don't. Sometimes it takes awhile for an evaluation to stabilize. Exhibit A being Tonight's The Night or TRANS, for example, which were very misunderstood upon release.

Also, see the new Rolling Stone interview with David Fricke where he refers to ALH as a "covers album" and Neil gets nearly angry and says : "I resent the album being labeled a covers album".

The guy is on journey through the past and he's just gone somewhere we've never been.

relax. enjoy the ride. it's just a ride, you know that, right?

Afterall, here's a comment from Dan1:
For my money Neil has earned the right to do whatever he pleases ...

that said, the coolest thing I've read here on TW was that the process of making this album caused some of the masters to rub off on him and he's writing new material ... someone in thread alluded to this and it reminds me a little of Americana ... there were all these doubters complaining about it and then PP showed up on the back end ...

same thing here, I haven't had the time to focus on listening to it (was it ever streaming on NPR?) or buying it (although I listen to 'Changes' and Needle of Death' from Carnegie Hall incessantly) but if you end up with new material on the back end its pure gold ...

anyhow, I thought Americana would be a throw away and granted I only listened to it a few times but it was excellent and as with most things Neil these albums age beautifully and in time they somehow make total sense ... one of the things I love about Neil is that the whole trip around the music is art too ... and he's saying lots of things ... too easy to be negative and dismiss it as a gimmick ...

Neil's too busy to do gimmicks and he ain't doing it to just sell records ...
Thanks Dan1!

From Neil Young on Jack White, Archives II and His Special Message to Mom | David Fricke | Rolling Stone:
What is the status of your next memoir?

Neil Young: It's finished. I'm painting art for it now. They're very simple paintings, based on tracings of things that I love. And I water-color them, put my own little thing on them. I've never done that before. I find it relaxing and gratifying.

It's not the same kind of book [as Waging Heavy Peace]. It's about my history with cars. I told the story of what happened in every car that I got, how my life changed as I drove these cars around. I would discover these different things that I saw while I was in them. And each chapter is about the next car I got, the experiences I had until that car was done.

What is the state of Archives: Volume II? I've heard that it could be out by the end of this year.

Neil Young:It'll be finished this summer. All of the music will be done. It goes just past [1979's] Rust Never Sleeps. It's full of albums that weren't there before – stuff I did that I never put out. [Already confirmed for the set by Young: material from the unissued LPs Chrome Dreams and Homegrown and an alternate edition of the 1973 live album, Time Fades Away.]

The rest will come out pretty quickly. While we've been working on Volume II, we've been working on the other Volumes. [Young has said that there will be five Volumes, the last covering the 2000s.]

TONIGHT: Jack White and Neil Young Will Perform Together on The Tonight Show - May 12

(*Note - composite image)

From Inside Neil Young & Jack White's 'Crazy' Night on 'Fallon | Billboard by Gary Graff:
"You only get one shot," Young told Billboard about the process the day before his "Tonight" appearance. "So when you do it, you've got to do it. There's no fixing it. You really have to be prepared, which is really good for the music instead of going in and patching it together with little pieces of digital gaffer's tape and stuff. The whole idea of a performance is where you feel a song when you sing it, and you've got a great song that somebody wrote, or maybe you wrote it yourself, and it really means something to you and you know it and you sing it and you feel it with all your hearing while you're singing it. And when you're done you don't even have to listen to it, 'cause you know it is what it is. It's done, and when everybody listens to it, they should feel it, too."

Young said he was already thinking about doing an album of songs that were part of his "musical roots" when White showed him the Voice-O-Graph machine. "I tried making a record in there, I can't remember what, and I liked the way it sounded," Young recalls. "I said, 'Well, I can make an album in this thing.' And (White) looked at me, and I said, 'Yeah, I can make a whole album in this. We'll figure out a way to do it. Let's do it together. You can help me and we'll reproduce it together and we'll do the whole thing."

"It has a real timeless quality," Young said. "If you didn't know what it was, you wouldn't know when it was made. You wouldn't know if this was an old record of mine or if it was somebody else...which I found to be very fascinating and really refreshing." What he doesn't like, however, is people calling it a covers album. "That's a term I really don't like, covers," Young explained. "That misses the point of what the record is. It's actually more of a piece of performance art. It's actual songs. It's actually the performance of a song and the essence of a song. That's what it's about."

He says his next musical project will likely be a set of original material, which he acknowledged has been influenced by what he recorded for "A Letter Home."

"Oh, yes, you can't learn the masters' songs without having a little of it rub off on you," he said. "I'm writing right now. I'm writing songs, and I'm going to do justice to these songs one way or another. And life has changed; a lot of the people I used to make records with are not on the planet anymore. And I write these songs and I can hear their parts in my head and I don't want anybody else to be imitating them. So I have a little quandary there. I'm gonna have to work that out inside my own soul and figure out how to deal with that, but nonetheless I feel very confident I'm gonna be able to communicate those songs and they will live. I'm having a really good time in my life, and that's all I really need. As long as all those things are lined up, I feel very optimistic about the future. As far as the sales of records go and the commerciality and the success, I have no idea about that. As far as I am, as an artist, going to be feeling good about what I do and feel like I'm really on what I'm doing, I've got, like, a 90% chance of that happening."

From Jambands.com - Need We Say More? > News > Jack White and Neil Young Will Perform Together on _The Tonight Show_: (via BNB. Thanks bh!)
Jack White and Neil Young will perform together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on May 12 in addition to sitting down with the host for an interview. This appearance will mark Young’s first-ever live appearance on either of Fallon’s late night shows.

While White gears up for the release of his own Lazaretto, this appearance will be in support of Neil Young’s new covers album A Letter Home which was recorded at White’s Third Man Records studios. White is featured on two tracks.

Additional guests on May 12 include Louis C.K. and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page.

So, Jack, Jimmy P. & Neil maybe jam together?

Actually, let's hope Jimmy F. just let's the whole night roll and keeps himself low key. Stay in the moment of awe and anticipation. We dread a Jimmy impression or lord forbid - a walk on - where he tries to join in a Jack & neil (& Jimmy) jam. That would be a travesty.

And look what happened last time "Neil Young" was on Jimmy Fallon's show? "Whip My Hair"?! “Party in the USA”?! Oh, the horror, the horror...

Bruce Springsteen and "Neil Young": "Whip My Hair"

Jimmy Fallon seems to be making a career out of his Neil Young impressions. Last year, it all started with Jimmy Fallon impersonating Neil Young covering "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" which went totally viral. Then followed by "Pants On The Ground"

Which led to a viral video of a viral video of Neil Young's Emotional 'Double Rainbow' Ballad (VIDEO).

"Born in the USA" - Neil Young & Crazy Horse, February 9, 2013

Maybe it's just us who found Neil Young covering "Born In The USA" at the Bruce Springsteen 2013 MusiCares Tribute to be quite perfectly amusing.

Afterall, when we ran a poll on what song would Neil cover, virtually no one saw this coming.

As we mused on Thrasher's Wheat Radio, the "Born In The USA" irony when completely unremarked -- even up in Canada where we thought someone would've gotten all righteous.

Is it too far a stretch to suggest a connection between Neil Young's iconic -- and misunderstood -- "Rockin' in the Free World" and Bruce Springsteen's iconic -- and misunderstood "Born In The USA"?

So what was the deal with those "The Signing Cheerleaders"?
Afterall, just last year Neil Young & Crazy Horse released a song "Born In Ontario" on the album "Psychedelic Pill".

"Neil Young made me sound like the Sex Pistols. Tonight made me proud to be a musician."
~~Bruce Springsteen

"Two sign-language interpreters dressed as cheerleaders"

Young shut down the pre-Springsteen portion of the evening with a "Born in the USA" that included two sign-language interpreters dressed as cheerleaders signing along to the lyrics.

"John Legend made me sound like Gershwin," Springsteen said. "I love that. Neil Young made me sound like the Sex Pistols. I love that. What an evening."

Of course, not everyone was thrilled by Neil & The Horse's rendition of the Bruce classic -- especially Springsteen fans. From the fan blog Backstreets.com:
But the night's worst performance came from the person one might have expected would deliver the best. Neil Young and Crazy Horse (joined by Nils Lofgren on synthesizer) absolutely butchered "Born in the U.S.A." Instead of "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World"-izing it, the arrangement seemed to be a kind of misguided attempt to turn it into Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," right down to the addition of two cheerleaders who were "cheering along" on stage in matching uniforms. That terrible creative choice (the poor women didn't know what to do with themselves 30 seconds into the song) coupled with Young's unfamiliarity with the lyrics (all performers save for Kenny Chesney used prompters) created a shambolic mess, with Neil shouting lines with apparent passion but missing the plot both literally and figuratively. That signature Crazy Horse fuzz guitar always appeals, but not this time. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise (Bruce included, who later said Neil had made him sound "like the Sex Pistols"), it was awful.
And here's a counterpoint to Backstreets.com from MusiCares’ tribute to Bruce Springsteen, and the art of the cover version - National Performing Arts | Examiner.com by Harold Lepidus:
To me, Neil and the Horse nailed it. It was the best thing all night, a complete surprise, the only performance to match the magic and manic intensity of a Springsteen show. The addition of two awkward, clueless cheerleaders holding invisible rifles was a stroke of genius, and the sound had the smell of the Horse all over it. No one would misinterpret this “Born in the U.S.A.” as a jingoistic anthem. Springsteen compared it to the Sex Pistols, and he wasn’t far off. It's better to burn out than to fade away. Phillips, for whatever reason, didn’t get it, and insisted “it was awful,” and to not “let anyone tell you otherwise.” Well, I’m telling you otherwise. I also know many of my friends would agree with Phillips. Which is what makes Young, Springsteen, and their fan’s musical passions, fascinating.

VIDEO: Vinyl Review of "A Letter Home" by Neil Young

Here's a delightful vinyl review by Turntable Currents of "A Letter Home" by Neil Young.

(Thanks TC! Cool review.)

Also, see Reviewed! Neil Young, "A Letter Home" - Uncut.co.uk by John Mulvey:
A Letter Home, though, is also part of a larger, all-encompassing project: Neil Young’s ongoing attempt to memorialise and catalogue his own past through a patchwork of new songs, covers, films, autobiographies and upgraded reissues. Sometimes it can all feel like ornery sport, a way for Young to avoid releasing the historical artefact that his fans actually want – the ‘70s motherlode of Archives Volume Two.

This latest delaying tactic is very much in the marginalia of Neil Young’s discography, tossed-off by design. The suspicion remains that music, old or new, is not his greatest priority at the moment, falling some way behind the more pressing business of biofuel cars, science fiction novels and, of course, revolutionary new audio players (the key moment in Young’s last Uncut interview came when he cut short a discussion of music and barked, “More Pono questions!”).

Nevertheless, this sequel of sorts to Americana is an endearing little document, made more interesting by Young’s decision to render a predominantly ‘60s playlist in a way that would’ve been anachronistically low-fi in the 1940s. “Recorded live to one-track, mono, the album has an inherent warm, primitive feel of a vintage Folkways recording,” the press release trumpets, and the unsteady sonics turn out to complement Young’s wavering voice rather well. Young’s schtick is to use the Voice-O-Graph like a time machine, mapping wild trajectories between eras and dimensions, so that each side of the vinyl edition begins with a hokey “letter home” to his mother in the afterlife, much like the sentimental vinyl missives that were the usual two-minute product of Voice-O-Graph machines. “I’ll be there eventually. Not for a while, though - I still really have a lot of work to do here,” he notes, pointedly.

U2 Covers Neil Young's "Southern Man" - 1987

This video goes all the way back to 1987 of a young band named U2 covering Neil Young's "Southern Man".

There are a number of lyric changes in the cover in London, England on the UK TV program 'Old Grey Whistle Test' (listed as 1981.02.28).

This was during the The Joshua Tree era, and U2 performed two songs from The Joshua Tree and finished with "Pride" and the cover of "Southern Man".

Kent State Truth Tribunal Update: 44th Anniversary - May 4, 1970

Crosby, Stills & Nash reflect on 'Ohio' 44 years after Kent State

'CNN Special Report Witnessed: The Killings at Kent State’ airs this Sunday, May 4 at 7p E.T. on CNN.

Singer David Crosby says his first reaction to reading Neil Young's lyrics for the song 'Ohio' was "this is gonna cause some trouble." Then he said "get us a studio and get it now." 'Ohio' was written as a response to National Guard forces opening fire on anti-Vietnam protesters on the campus of Kent State. Four protesters were killed, nine others were wounded. Sunday May 4th marks 44 years since the tragedy.

Laurel Krause (Allison Krause's sister)
Kent State Truth Tribunal

44 years ago today, shots rang out across a college campus, leaving four dead in Ohio and the lives of so many of a generation changed forever by the events of that day.

Such is the life of Laurel Krause -- the sister of Allison Krause, one of the four students who died on the Kent State College campus in Ohio.

From Kent State Truth Tribunal
On May 4, 1970 my sister Allison was shot to death around noon as she protested against the expanding Vietnam War and the US military occupation of her college campus, Kent State University.

Ever since May 1970, American leadership, Kent State University and US government agencies involved in the Kent State Massacre planning, the execution and the aftermath have never claimed that the murders at #KentState were at the hands of the US government … or that it was even murder at all.

To restate this conundrum, US military bullets killed and injured American students at a peace rally. The US troops shot armor-piercing bullets from American war weapons, killing four students, critically wounding nine yet ever since that day, American leadership has never referred to or reflected on the fact that young people and protesters were shot dead by US military personnel with US military weapons.

A drastically different view (fostered mostly by #truth) will forever be held by most of the Baby Boomers, the real target on this great US government onslaught.

Just after Kent State, EVERYBODY KNEW they meant to #kill at Kent State … and 10 days later in a related show of force, two additional American students were shot dead at Jackson State University, with the tally at six students in May 1970. This long-gone American history show us how the US government has gotten away with murder against American young adults and protestors … now going on 44 years.

The US Dept of Justice letter 11/19/73 pertains to Mr. Terry Norman -- a critical link in the Kent State Ohio Massacre Coverup.

Terry Norman - FBI informant/provocateur
70 Seconds Before Kent State Shootings
May 4, 1970 @ 12:24 PM

Kent State Truth Tribunal

So what really happened at Kent State, Ohio 43 years ago tomorrow?

Based on last week's U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation report, we still might never know. Or will we someday learn the awful truth of that tragic day that left 4 dead in Ohio?

It seems that the key to the truth lies with Terry Norman.

In recently discovered film of the Kent State Shooting in 1970 (1:07.40 thru 1:08), FBI informant provocateur Terry Norman (photo at top) is the young man in the light colored sports jacket. Earlier that day Norman's mentor, Detective Tom Kelly from the Kent Police had attempted to have Norman's gun approved for carrying on campus during the demonstrations, but that approval never came so it's KEY that the video clearly shows Norman handing over his gun to Detective Kelly.

From forensic evidence expert Stuart Allen's analyses of the Kent State Tape in 2010, we learned that Norman shot that weapon at the May 4th demonstration as he was attacked & beat-up by students who saw his gun. (More on Terry Norman ~ Does Terry Norman Hold the Key to Kent State?.)

Watching these Kent State videos without sound, Norman's gun hand-off coupled with the post-Kent State Tape analysis, we now understand the importance of this interaction caught on video & at many other sources.

Norman's pistol 'created the sound of sniper fire.'

In response to the DOJ whitewash report Congressman Dennis Kucinich issued a statement:
“The letter also failed to indicate any efforts to reconcile the evidence in the recording with any prior statements about the incident made by FBI paid informant, Terry Norman, who was on campus that day and was known to have brandished a gun that might have created the sounds caught in the recording.

“While I appreciate the response from the Justice Department, ultimately, they fail to examine key questions and discrepancies. It is well known that an FBI informant, Terry Norman, was on the campus. That FBI informant was carrying a gun. Eye witnesses testified that they saw Mr. Norman brandish that weapon. Two experts in forensic audio, who have previously testified in court regarding audio forensics, found gunshots in their analysis of the audio recording.

Did an FBI informant discharge a firearm at Kent State?

Did an FBI informant precipitate the shootings?"

Why is understanding the Kent State Ohio Massacre critical?

To understand the events of May 4, 1970 at Kent State and the four dead in Ohio, is to understand much of what has happened in our history before, during and after.

In the intervening 41 years, there have been a wide range of commissions, studies, research and theories of what actually led to twenty-eight Ohio National Guardsmen shooting into a crowd of anti-war protesters at Kent State University which left four college students dead on the ground.

kent state

"History never exactly repeats itself.

But its currents are never far from the present. As today’s protesters and police employ bolder tactics, the Kent State and Jackson State anniversaries should remind us that deadly mistakes can and do happen. It is the government’s responsibility to wield proportionate force, not to over-arm police and place them in a position where they could panic with deadly results."

~~ Steven Rosenfeld, Will a Militarized Police Force Facing Occupy Wall Street Lead to Another Kent State Massacre? | Civil Liberties | AlterNet

Despite many official denials, there have always been persistent theories that the National Guard was actually provoked into the shootings by a belief that they were being fired upon themselves and therefore were acting in self defense.

What follows is a brief recap for those less familiar with the The Kent State Massacre, followed by the latest developments.

The spring of 1970 was a time of significant unrest on college campuses protesting the Vietnam war and President Richard Nixon's announcement of a new American invasion of Cambodia, provoking an escalation in anti-war protests. The anti-war protest movement culminated with the Kent State Massacre which resulted in hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closing throughout the United States due to a student strike of four million students. The official President's Commission on Campus Unrest concluded that "the indiscriminate firing of rifles into a crowd of students and the deaths that followed were unnecessary, unwarranted, and inexcusable."

Here is a summary of recent new developments from Kent State Truth Tribunal. (For more, see Kent State Truth Tribunal. Thanks Laurel for all of your work in your sister Allison's name.)

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Minneapolis, MN 1970
"They were about to walk out on stage and were spending a moment warming up."

Immediately after the Kent State shooting on May 4, 1970, Neil Young composed the song "Ohio" after looking at photos appearing in Life magazine and then taking a walk in the woods. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young went to the studio and recorded the song which was released to radio stations shortly after the killings.

A rather significant article in today's The Cleveland (Ohio) Plain Dealer "Neil Young's 'Ohio' evokes strong images of May 4, 1970 shootings at Kent State" by Mark Dawidziak:
It was more than just another protest song.

Ohio was a cry of anguish, penned by Neil Young after seeing pictures taken at Kent State University on May 4, 1970.

But 40 years after members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on college students, Young's "Ohio" remains the most evocative pop-culture response to a defining moment in American history.
"This is an event that now is in every history book," said Carole A. Barbato, a Kent State University professor of communication studies who team-teaches a course on May 4. "Wherever you live, even though your environment obviously shapes how you perceive things, you're probably as aware of the shootings at Kent State as those of us in Northeast Ohio. And even though this still would be in the history books, the pop culture certainly does perpetuate that. "Ohio" was entering the pop-culture consciousness within three weeks of the shootings.

"It was the quickest and best reaction to Kent State, with Neil Young acting as 50 percent songwriter and 50 percent journalist," said David Bianculli, a pop-culture historian who teaches at Rowan University and regularly contributes to NPR's "Fresh Air."

"I'll tell you what that song meant," said Bianculli, author of the recently published "Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." "After the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, you felt kind of helpless as a young person. It seemed that when someone had your voice, that voice was silenced, usually by violence.

"Then you have Kent State, and college kids are actually fired upon. And when you just might start to be thinking, you don't dare have a voice or there is no voice, from the radio comes this voice of solidarity and outrage. It wasn't just a pop song."

...
"After 1970, that doesn't happen again. It didn't need to happen again, mostly because it didn't need to happen there. And that's what Neil Young's song spoke to."

Thanks Ken D.
