But then again, the Crazy Horse experience is not really a musical one in the first place. The 22-minute version of Walk Like a Giant, for example, opened with a raw, dusty, debris-filled blast of feedback and ended with about eight minutes of ridiculous, lumbering noise reminiscent of an overamplified cat coughing up a hairball. In the main body of the song, plaid-shirted Young did the usual strangling of his guitar, hammering and bending one note – and the more he thrashed and throttled, the more distortion he commanded from his effects pedal, the more excited the audience got.
For the impossibly monotonous Ramada Inn, it was rinse and repeat … and repeat – for 16 very long minutes. The otherwise excellent F –kin’ Up was also stretched out mercilessly and unnecessarily, to a punishing 14 minutes.
But one man’s tedium is another man’s inimitable groove.
For every Young fan who thinks Crazy Horse are a bunch of enablers, bringing out all his most self-indulgent tendencies, there’s another who thinks the Horse define what Young is all about: no pandering, no BS, no concessions. And there were 11,400 of those true believers at Friday night’s show. They were with the Horse every step of the way, and Young seemed gleeful about it.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse will be performing tonight at Montreal, QC – Bell Centre, Canada.

For Young fans who tilt toward the “loud and long” side of the canon, in fact, there’s arguably nothing sweeter.
So after not one, but two new recorded clumps of “Hey, whatever we got goin’ on, we got goin’ on” from the Horse in 2012 — June’s irreverent (read: “slapdash”) “standards” collection Americana and last month’s divisive, but wholly (read: “self-indulgently”) Neil Young and Crazy Horse-esque double-disc sprawl Psychedelic Pill — a fall tour by Young and Crazy Horse was a thrillingly foregone conclusion.
Psychedelic Pill claimed a dominant share of Young and the band’s Monday-night set at the Air Canada Centre, a raw and rancorous throwdown that bristled with an ageless vitality that would seem to support Young’s claims in Waging Heavy Peace that Crazy Horse is “my window to the cosmic world where the muse lives and breathes … Just getting there is the key thing, and Crazy Horse is my way of getting there.”

Fans looking for more “Harvest” era hits like “Heart of Gold” or “Old Man” were out of luck as Young strapped on his Les Paul electric “Ol’ Black” and led Crazy Horse on another lengthy workout from “Pill,” a emotional number about a dissolving marriage due to alcohol abuse titled “Ramada Inn.”
Neil finally threw a bone to the hit seekers, performing a slightly extended version of his 1969 hit “Cinnamon Girl,” which earned him his first standing ovation, followed by another track from “Pill” titled, “F**ckin' Up,” which featured fierce guitar interplay between Sampedro and Young.
In the homestretch, Young’s familiar “Satisfaction”-like guitar riff introduced his 1967 Buffalo Springfield classic “Mr. Soul,” which had many of the thousands of babyboomers misty-eyed and cinched the evening with his rock anthem “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) prior to returning for a quick encore, performing “Roll Another Number” from 1975’s “Tonight’s the Night.”
Young clearly still has his muse and remains a relevant creative force. Teamed with Crazy Horse, he continues to ride high and rock with the best of them.

There have been 22 different songs performed with most shows averaging about 13 total songs. The following songs have been played at almost every 2012 concert:
Before last Thursday, when ol' Shakey and his golden garage band Crazy Horse stomped through my local amphitheater, the last thing I'd thought I'd be excited about was a bunch of guys hovering around 70, playing loud rock and roll into the night. I knew I'd love the Crazy Horse set — it was getting great reviews, the new album Psychedelic Pill is cool, and Young's the tinkering type who never stops challenging himself. But later, I found myself thinking about how Young's impressive vigor doesn't separate him from his peers — it's actually characteristic of the very acts that walked like giants in the 1960s, and whom you'd expect to be delivering little but nostalgia now.

Yet as Crazy Horse leaned in close and pushed forward, resonances from every previous Neil Young era floated through the music's distortion. I laughed when Young theatrically donned a flannel shirt before initiating "F*!#in' Up," an album track from his twentieth studio release — but I also thought, it's true, this dude did invent the 1990s (rockwise at least). Not only his pals Pearl Jam but Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth and Nirvana wouldn't have done what they did without his example. By focusing on new material and then juxtaposing the few old faves included with less familiar songs that share their main qualities, Young's current set lists make such insights more accessible.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse looked like the guys who constructed Voodoo Fest’s main stage. Instead, they were the guys who deconstructed it.
Young, bassist Billy Talbot, drummer Ralph Molina and rhythm guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro muscled through two exhilarating hours of especially stout guitar rock. If Gary Clark Jr. was a fighter jet at Voodoo, Crazy Horse was a squadron of B-52 bombers.

At 11 p.m., as an encore of “Like a Hurricane” blew itself out, Young sacrificed his guitar. He tore off the strings, scratching them against the instrument’s pickups to produce more distortion. As the guitar lay prone, he contemplated it and nudged it with his foot, as if to see whether it was really dead.
It was.
In one of the greatest Voodoo sets to date, Young, abetted by Crazy Horse, played it to death.

In the stranger than fiction category, Guns n Roses' Axl Rose and Neil Young performed "Don't Let It Bring You Down" together at the Sunday Bridge School Benefit Concert (Oct. 21, 2012). After completing the song, Axl said: “This is a song that always gave me some hope through the years and we asked Neil if we could do it.”
The pairing of Axl and Neil, marks another chapter in the varied musical intersections of Neil Young over the years. Or as we like to call it: "Six degrees of separation from Neil."
At the end of the Saturday concert, all performers were invited onstage for the encore of "Rockin' in the Free World". At some point, (possibly because of Lukas Nelson's enthusiasm?) Neil Young handed is guitar over to Lukas Nelson to finish off the song.
Lukas Nelson (Willie's son) took to Neil's guitar with wild abandon -- at Neil's joyous encouragement -- to finish out the night with the ensemble musicians spread across the stage including Eddie Vedder, Wayne Coyne, Gary Clark Jr., Foster the People, members of Jack White band, Reggie Watts, Pegi Young and many more.
