Neil Young's 2024 Year in Review: Crazy Horse Fades and The Chrome Heart(s) Burns
So, walk with us on a journey through the past year of 2024 ...
REVIEWS: First Impressions: Live at Fillmore East, 1969 by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Once again, as we conclude 2024, we ponder that age old question: Is Neil Young burning out or fading away?
We've argued that he is neither.
Neil Young is the quintessential survivor. So we here at Thrasher's Wheat say thank you so much for all of the love and support over the past decades from the rustie grains fan communities.

It is these note's for us that keep us going, such as this one from The Extraordinary Grain Man Dan on Thanks for Supporting Thrasher's Wheat.
Last year, we wrapped up 2023 with a post on Thrasher's Wheat's future on Where Do We Go Now ... or Where Did We Go From There?

At the moment, everyone can relax somewhat because Thrasher's Wheat will continue to celebrate Neil Young, his music and the fan communities. So stay tuned for some hopefully exciting announcements in the months ahead as we celebrate our remarkable little milestone as the 2nd longest running music blog in the history of the internet.
Maintaining a robust, healthy, engaged community that allows open, honest and free speech is paramount for us here in Neil / RUST & TW grain communities. There is simply nothing whatsoever which is more important to us and what we do and stand for. Again, thank you so much for reading our articles, sharing them throughout the web, and contributing your own thoughts through comments and messages. Today, more than ever, we need independent thinkers like you folks out there in the rustie-grains village that rely on a solid moral compass – not a pre-determined agenda – to understand this circus, to stand up, to speak up, and to fight for what is right.
Lastly, if you would like to support what we do here at Thrasher's Wheat, you can make a donation on PayPal link below:

What a year! What a website! Thank you for all you do TW!!!
This time of year is fairly hectic for most everyone, and there’s also a lot of stress and even sadness for many. But I would like to thank Thrasher, and Thrasherett for their patience and willingness to endure the responsibility of creating and maintaining this remarkable place for us Rusties. Thanks to you both for your hard work and dedication in keeping us all informed. And creating this safe space for us to share our thoughts and experiences.
Peace to all 🙏

Edited: Thanks so much to Thrasher, Thrashette, and all the people who post comments, and those who help support the blog by donating cash to Thrasher’s Wheat! Bandwidth isn’t free and Thrasher pays the fees, no advertising! See link above to donate. If you have not done so, please do!
Like Dan, I am so grateful for this great blog for Neil Young fanatics! It is a safe place & last bastion of free speech in the internet! Try criticizing the US funding of Genocide in Gaza on any other media! Yes, 2 parties guaranteeing one Genocide in progress. Remember I am part Israeli so I can talk the shit! Yes, because I am Anti Genocide no matter what! No matter who! That’s a “sticky wicket” Thanks for opening your mind and for listening to Neil Young music. Keep On Rocking in the “Free World” (wherever that may be, in our US Oligarchy). Don’t that trouble you brother? Don’t that trouble you pal? That’s life in the (modern American) city!
(Edited):
Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas. Let’s team up and stop the bleeding, the killing, the Genocide in Gaza. The Christmas color Red is supposed to symbolize something else!
Dear Santa, if it wouldn’t be too much trouble, I would like to own NYA3. Thank you! Thank you All! Your Brother Alan in Seattle
PayPal link not working...
@ Growl : Confirmed, PayPal buttons not working at the moment for making donations to Thrasher’s Wheat. Check back for update. I have alerted Thrasher. Merry Christmas Eve! Your Brother Alan in Seattle
So yes, the “Donate” via PayPal links are not working at the moment. Please do check back and follow up to donate. Thrasher pays our way, using his own money, no advertising. Thanks Thrasher! The Greatest place in cyberspace!
To look back on the year is incredible. That old hippie Neil Young has been active! I was lucky with the Love Earth tour, catching it at my Alma mater, SDSU. It’s still called the OAT (0pen Air Theater) in my mind. And what a show!
If the new Chrome Hearts tour is not blocked by some obstacle / etc, God willing, the mortal musician we love will take his band to Europe & hopefully back to the US. There are various places on Earth where the locals are hoping the band comes to them too!
2024 has been a year of, well, an embarrassment of riches once again. Lost love CSNY albums getting released, other lost albums being found (Castle Country, w 7 original unheard songs!!!). Tours planned, attempted, band members struck by illness, and a new tour planned. There has been so much happening it is hard to keep track of! I am grateful for all of you, & Our little place at the top of the internet stairs, with a pipe to share…..
But seriously, TW is so cool! The year end roll out was amazing! So much happened in 2024!
Right now, Thrasher is off flying a sleigh or something. I want to ask you to post your thoughts on the blog. If you have anything to say, to add. Got a story to tell about a Neil Young show or related item? Got something positive to say? Big Shift on the way? Could humans evolve into loving each other and not killing? Light a candle. There’s something ahead worth waiting for. What do you think? Your Brother Alan in Seattle
Title announced for new album of 80s Castle recordings: check out Neil’s story on T-C Music page!
Of course it's the artist's eminent right to name his or her creations. Still I would have preferred "Uncharacteristic", but then I also understand that the irony might be lost on most casual listeners and even might somehow point in the wrong direction. With a creative title like this one and all the songs with state names (e.g "Colorado") and other territories ("Mexico") stricken from the list as well, there is a catalogue of about 35+ options remaining for the future .
Thanks again everyone for visiting and dropping a comment!
Apologies on broken links all over the floor.
The TW PayPal donation link is now fixed. Please let us know if any issues encountered.
Per Brother Alan's suggestion, we do appreciate the support. We did not make our annual fund drive this year during Thanksgiving due to a variety of factors. And with this broken link, it looks like we missed our minimal fund raising goals. We do this only once a year, so for those less inclined to give and share, this was your lucky year.
We do look forward to 2025 and wish everyone all the best in the new year.
PayPal link now fully functional. Thrasher, thanks for keeping the flag flying for all those of us in the NY universe. I have been very quiet of late as had trouble logging in for comments (now seems to be solved) and got out of the habit. I no longer receive any emails from you, have these broadcasts been discontinued?
Hoping that Neil will tour UK in the summer, if not I will have to venture to Continental Europe or the States. My last gig was Berlin 2019 and the itch must be scratched soon.
Best wishes to all for 2025.
I've bin reading of late .... how yer President elect Trump ... continues with his threats of invading Canada .
Bring it on there lads ...those that man our long rifles and Bren Guns are well prepared and look forward to the battle , as we will draw you into the bush and feed you to the bears .
Curious where Mr. Earth ... Neil Young ( Born in Ontario ) ... will stand once the battle begins ?
We look forward to the use of his lodge .... North of Peterborough ...as a staging ground ...... as our loyalist troops .....rest , feed and reload .
We will not surrender !
We will once again ...burn the Whitehouse .
As proud as our redcoat forefathers .
We will never surrender .
Long Live our Noble King ..... Eh !
@Fort Mac : So….you’ve been reading? Perhaps you should take a lesson in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Perhaps then, we may be able to decipher your point more accurately. As it is; you present yourself poorly.
Peace to all 🙏……yes even Fort Mac
Happy New Year all.
Thanks Thrasher for keeping the site alive and active.
And just saw that there are 2 fireside videos now on the NYA homepage - not exactly a session, one song each. Silver and Gold with a fine long acoustic intro and Pardon My Heart.
Very mellow.
Hambone in the UK
Yes Dan .. my grammar is poor . Canadian made diesel , Canadian made fertilizer from Saskatchewan , along with Canadian made enriched Uranium that is plentiful and easily accessible .... will make fer a big boom boom @ Chalk River and Pickering Nuclear Plants .....that will turn the Eastern Americana seaboard into sawdust . We are only waiting for cheese burger eating Trump to sit fat ass on his throne in the White house .
History will repeat once again .... Redcoats , loyal to our Noble King ...will burn the White House .
Yes Dan ... I present my self real poor like , my grammar ain't no good .
Ain't much better than yer Americana love fer ghetto gangster hand guns ...n yer love fer mass murdering school children assault rifles . That won't do ya no good once yer up here in the bush with the blackflies and squitters .
One thing you aint goin ta feel so high n mighty about .... when the battle of yer attempted Americana invasion is in our Canadian Boreal forests ... you will only hear the swoosh of a broad axe handle ...end over end ...before it lands in the middle of yer forehead .
Happy New Year to everyone who visits this safe space for free speech and Neil Young…ness. I hope the best for next year, but prepared for the worst. Whatever happens; just remember….we’re all in this together. Earth is the only place in the universe that we (as humans) can survive. If we are to survive, we need to Love Earth.
Peace to all 🙏
Comrades, the end is nigh. The Sasquatch went online again, an ex-president is honored for being an ex-president instead of being honored for trying hard to be a good president and I can't have my Neil Young record collection sorted to my taste anymore and succumbed to "It's all one song!".
Less than 6 hours before Europe jumps the 24-ship I wish you all a happier New Year.
@ Dan - thanks -- as always -- for being here and being the steady voice of reason. Deeply appreciated.
regarding Fort Mac. As many have observed over the years, Fort Mac is a troll bot programmed to make Canadians look like idiots. Why you ask? Good question.
Much like the comment troll bots we saw explode a decade+ ago here, they were programed to make Neil Young fans seem like idiots. Furthermore, they are designed to disrupt and destabilize online communities.
Fortunately, we were able to root these out over the years and for the most part the issue has been well under control. So grateful.
Back to the Fort Mac troll bot. We get asked why not just delete these comments? Why allow publish? Again, good question.
We like to say these are "teachable moments". Here @ TW, we try to walk the fine line between ensuring free speech and preventing the misuse of this platform. Free speech is complicated and messy, but that doesn't grant any entity carte blanche to weaponize it against our rustie-grains community.
Deploying influence OPS that hack reality, distort perceptions, and manufacture consent isn’t just unethical—it’s a form of information warfare with real-world consequences far beyond TW. We must remain vigilant, not to censor, but to ensure our platform doesn't become a breeding ground for Fort Mac's manipulation and mass-scale deception.
In striving for neutrality, and we have made strides to do better, we have to navigate this complexity without becoming an arbiter of "Neil truth", but rather a guardian against those who seek to destabilizing it, as Fort Mac lamely attempts. *
While the challenge is immense for us here @TW, the stakes are even higher for the wider EARTH audience.
Happy New Year and see you in 2025!

ps - shameless plug here for film A Complete Unknown, the Dylan bio-pic. Thrashette and I attended last night and encourage others to check out. It's been awhile since Thrashers had a movie date night given the mainly pitiful releases of late. So it was a pleasure to enjoy a film that didn't insult us but raised our consciousness.
And reminded us yet again that the times they are a changin' and the answer, our friends, is blowin the winds.
Yes, Fort Mac is a Troll, just doing his job. Let’s not feed him / it. The name may have something to do with Neil Young observing / saying that Fort McMurray (Canada) looks like Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped (with the tar sands oil production laying waste to the land, water, & air.
Santa Claus brought me NYA3, which I am just hearing, mostly for the first time. Some of the CDs are pretty short. I am guessing NYA2 gave me more enjoyment than NYA3 will, but it’s early yet. I told my wife not to buy it for me for over $180, and she did come thru, although it must have been a challenge! Is it worth $180? I will get back to you on that. Probably so!
I wish all of you reading this a very good 2025, better than expected.
Your Brother Alan in Seattle
Pardon My Heart is a great song. From my point of view, it refuses to follow any well worn paths. Happy New Year to everyone.
40 plus years in to being a devoted fan, Neil is now a Time Machine for me. Missed him and the Horse this year in Ottawa, but just a fork in the road!
Listening to ‘Before and After’ recently and it really hit me how the rapid fire procession of tunes shifted my mind to particular places and times. Real specific memories rising to the top, spread apart by decades but seamlessly connected by Neil. If you committed to this artist back in the day you bet on the right pony, and it’s still paying off. Happy 2025 everyone!
Steve in Ottawa
Happy new year to all at Thrasher's Wheat. (Not the best start to the year for me — have been in bed ill for the last week. Onwards and upwards from here, I hope!).
Thrasher, thanks for another year of blogging, including the excellent year-in-review, above. All the best for 2025!
Scots.
