A Big Shift Coming at Neil Young Archives
An interesting item appearing on T-C | Neil Young Archives regarding "MAINSTREAMING".
Neil Young, as Editor of Times Contrarian on Neil Young Archives, has published a statement that:
"Going forward, we will be publishing independent political journalists who do not carry the burden of poisoned corporate support."
Certainly, a rather major shift in thinking at Neil Young Archives and the newspaper Times Contrarian. And obviously, should have been done long ago.
At the risk of saying "told you so", Here Comes "The Big Shift" and the corruption of mainstream media is blatant and dangerous, it is sadly ironic that this all comes so late in the game for those who should have been paying attention. But, better late than never.

The Big Shift? I sure hope it’s a comin’! It s hard to get the Truth when 6 Corporations own ALL the news! They have got us all polarized and deceived. Why does the news never talk about some things?
Questions come to mind such as “Why do we not have Health Care For All in the US? Every other western nation has it but us! All we get for our taxes is money for the National Debt and weapons of War, many of which we hand over to Israel to use to annihilate Gaza and its “Victims.” Notice the dead Palestinians are never called “Victims.”
Why is it that Republicans and Democrats in general like to bomb Gaza and feed weapons to the IDF to commit WAR Crimes by committing Genocide against the Palestinian people?
I am part Israeli, & also always Anti Genocide, no Matter Who, No Matter What! Speaking of which, that reminds me of the Genocide the white Americans committed against the Natives in the land later known as the US. Here’s a fact: Hitler credited the American treatment of the Natives with his later Slaughter of 6 million Jewish people. What have we become? The victim become the Murderer. The issue is the massive numbers of innocent people the IDF has killed.
Independent media coverage of the Native Water Protectors & Standing Rock Sioux at DAPL showed human rights violations by cops with no numbers in their badges, decked out in military armor, driving War Wagons, viciously, repeatedly assaulting the protestors / Natives. They fired flash bang grenades into large crowds of peaceful protesters, and shot rubber bullets too. One woman nearly lost her arm after being hit with a flash bang grenade. Another woman was blinded by a plastic bullet, again into a crowd of peaceful protesters / water protectors. Big Oil had laid the pipe.
Obama said “Let’s see how this plays out.” He and Trump had the same approach: Let the Militarized Cops terrorize peaceful protesters. Were it not for Independent media using drones etc, the Truth would have never gotten out. The Bully Cops sprayed firehouses on the peaceful protesters in 20F weather.
We must be better than this, as a country. We must demand Health Care and and end to Racism, an End to Genocide while American Politicians cheer!

Music owned by Blackstone is OK? A firm that owns companies involved in widespread deforestation, child labor, etc is good? I'm all about independent journalism but Neil took the poisoned corporate support the moment he sold his catalogue

There you have it: the last comment is a political lecture in a nutshell.
I was rather disheartened to read that post on the NYA. Blaming "corporate media" or "mainstream media" or "the drive-by media" is blaming the messenger and a bit of a red herring. The facts are that news via social media and television are disproportionately analysis and opinion with little neutral news. While many online sites that purport to be news are also more propaganda than neutral news, let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. Useful, reliable, reasonably neutral news exists; my daily habit includes (as a Nebraskan) the Nebraska Examiner, the Omaha World Herald, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. Are there blind spots, yes; is there a slight liberal bias to the last two, yes (although they are closer to neutral than sources that sell the selves as a "correction"); but by and large, I know what I need to know at the state, national, and global level. Could I devote more time and be even better informed? Yes, but I also have a life to live and lots of music to listen to.
The key is this: turn off the TV news, turn off news notifications on your phone, and check in with 1-2 reliable sources 1-2 times a day – it's that simple.
Here, here, Sal! The key is to evaluate news critically whatever the source. Sometimes msm gets things terribly wrong (support for Iraq war comes to mind), but there's also a lot of important investigative reporting that comes out of such sources. And the same may be said of so-called indie news sources. A mixed-media diet is healthy, which sounds like exactly Sal's approach. With all due respect to TW, simply labeling a source as categorically bad because it is supposedly mainstream is not a "big shift" worthy of the name, it's just lazy.

Thrasher (& Thrashette): I am grateful for your positive mindset and optimism. All is not lost. Humans can only live for so long in a broken system. We are not just selfish; we are capable of intrinsic motives, yearning for a world perhaps where love is currency. Neil Young fans are onto something. We get maybe an invitation to live a better life in community with others, coexisting with nature. War is dead.
Early morning mutterings. I may not know exactly what, when, or where It will happen, but we must nurture it when we find it. Light A Candle. There’s something ahead worth waiting for. 🙏🏼
Any educated person will follow the mixed-media diet, just as Sal and Nomad suggest. NYA is part of my diet, not more, not less. Most American news channels are almost unbearable to watch with their many intermissions, commercials, and their simultaneously running "breaking news"-banners: every gibberish by everyone at once, all the time and no focus. And yes, I am very much interested what Neil Young is thinking about the world, the sources that influence his world view, which eventually ends up in songlines, or involvement with a benefit or the idea that I still share some common sense and ground with a 79 year old veteran 44 years after I discovered his music.
What makes any artist appeal to us, move us, make us question our surroundings, effectively make us feel.......is the fact that they are wired up differently to us, and in our case it's Neil who does this. But, does a man in his late 70's who has had a wonderfully charmed life and probably has no idea how much a loaf of bread costs really have the answers to the problems of the world? Of course not, and we shouldn't expect him to. But the world is so much a better place with him in it. His intentions are laudable, and by offering news items from sources that he feels are legitimate is no bad thing. But in all honesty I seriously believe the best path is to access news when you want to, not be bombarded with it, and if possible get it from a wide range of viewpoints so that you don't get bogged down by a view that you would normally subscribe to. It's healthy to hear other peoples views, even if you don't agree with them, and then make an informed decision. Then, put a Neil album on and remind yourself that there are good people who mean well left in the world.
Social media sites, YouTube, and twenty four hour news channels have completely changed how information is distributed. Or misinformation is being consumed. The waters have been diluted, and this has led to information being used as a weapon. We no longer get news, we get information. Information which is being manipulated to appeal to specific ideological views. Information has become multi dimensional, where one can be fed the information they want, and not necessarily the information they need. Or they deserve.
Those who are in power have always used fear as a tool to manipulate the masses, and now they have unlimited control over the spread of information. This has become a battleground for control, and the majority of commercial media is run by the billionaires. And now the billionaires are about to take control of our government. We are approaching a big shift, but not necessarily the one that will benefit the majority. The shift is about to hit the fan, and all I can say is….hold on, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Or the Big Shift is what comes after the current chapter, after the Billionaires have leveled society, as in, knocked down, torn down, destroyed. Elon moving to electronically monitor 90% of Government employees as if Big Brother wasn’t already gathering all of our data. Watch Snowden if you have not yet. That film will blow your mind.

Yawn - how does this change the archival music provided by NYA? Not one bit.
The documentary Citizen 4 is ten years old, so the technology illustrated in that film is child’s play compared to what exists today. We are all simply zeros and ones, and any personal freedoms we once held are now ancient history. The world is now a dystopia reality, and there’s no going back. We must learn to adapt and overcome.

Once upon a long time ago, in a mass media class (12th grade) a lesson learned was that news should be reported. Sans personal commentary by the reporting party.
I have been a skeptical consumer of information ever since. Truth is harder to find these days. Sadly, personal commentary & opinions are now more common place than ever.
I often find BBC reporting, especially on covering US news from an “outside looking in” perspective, to be the most straightforward and reliable source. Also, in smaller doses, “PBS news hour” is a trusted source. Smaller doses being not the whole hour. :)
If anyone is going to an artist’s music website for anything other than the artist’s music, that’s not news. It’s opinion. In my opinion.
