Mastering Neil Young & Crazy Horse Odeon-Budokan '76 + Tuscaloosa '73 | John Hanlon's Notebook | NYA

Out Of The Fire:
Mastering the LP Odeon Budokan

via John Hanlon's Notebook | NYA

Another extremely detailed update from Engineer John Hanlon's Notebook on Neil Young's Archives site.

Neil Young - 1976

The details surround the mastering on the upcoming (someday) Neil Young & Crazy Horse Odeon-Budokan March 1976 concerts. John Hanlon writes:
There is no formula as to formats being digital or analog in terms of mix sources. We use the best we have always. We leave no stone unturned unless it weighs several tons, meaning if there is a tremendous amount of editing to be done or there are second and third generation master tape copies that are worn out and suffering sonically, or a given project was never really assembled in a viable analog domain – only then do we decide which to master from in terms of a given release format such as vinyl records, CDs, hi-res digital for streaming etc.
But even more exciting and interesting is the revelation of the Tuscaloosa tapes -- an "under the radar monster"?! (thanks Peter D.!)

Even the indispensably authoritative Sugar Mountain doesn't have a complete setlist for the Tuscaloosa show?!

Bring it on John & Archives Crew!

Phil Lee & The Horse He Rode In On | New Album w/ Billy Talbot & Ralph Molina

Here's some news on an upcoming album by Phil Lee, a long time friend of L.A. Johnson and the Shakey Crew.

Phil Lee has a new record -- The Horse He Rode In On -- coming out in December with Crazy Horse's Billy Talbot on bass and Ralph Molina on drums as the core of his band. Phil lives near Ralph and they play together frequently. It's a pretty cool record with great tunes.

In this day of calculated some-assembly-required Americana nimrods strutting around in Civil War outfits, rodeo garb, and ripped jeans declaring themselves outlaws and poets, Phil Lee stands out like a Krugerand in a pile of tarnished pesos. A former truck driver with a penchant for throwing knives to keep his head in the right place, Lee managed to escape Durham, North Carolina with his drum kit and guitars before the authorities felt the need to restrain his activities. After further adventures and misadventures, Lee eventually fell in with Neil Young’s organization where, with that CDL of his, he drove the Rust Never Sleeps props around, performed as Young’s party band on a few special occasions, and became part and parcel of the whole organism that is Crazy Horse.

Ralph Molina, Phil Lee & Billy Talbot

On his latest album, Lee teams up with old Crazy Horse pals and California neighbors Ralph Molina (drums) and Billy Talbot (bass) — “the horse he rode in on,” get it? The core threesome is augmented by legendary keyboard wiz Barry Goldberg (Electric Flag, Steve Miller Band) and guitar slinger Jan King. Add-ons include long time cohort and guitar maestro Richard Bennett (Neil Diamond, Mark Knopfler), twang guru Bill Kirchen, Bill Lloyd of Foster and Lloyd fame, slide guitarist David Weeks, keyboardist and another long time associate Jack Irwin, guitarists Dorian Michael and George Bradfute, and singers Molly Pasutti and Taryn Engel. Molina, Talbot, and Lee laid the basic tracks at Painted Sky Studio in Cambria, CA, then let the cast fill in a few holes. Jake Berger and Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam) add their guitars to one track. Lee says the biggest problem with the creative process was getting people “to stop fixing it.”

Billy Talbot

Lee has been at this long enough — his first Shanachie album Mighty King of Love dropped in 1999 — to subscribe to Vince Bell’s adage, “The first time it’s art, the second time it’s show biz.” His view on fixing everything? “It’s Crazy Horse, not Tidy Horse, for Christsakes.” He uses “Bad For Me” as an example.

“This is my personal favorite. It’s a personal song anyway but I dig how we played as if we were all buying into it and all mad as hell by the end. And heartbroken. Wild and mercurial and nowhere near perfect, it starts out low key and confidential but because we cut it live and can hear each other and feel the emotion, the song was gradually able to build to a seething, guitar-smashing crescendo. Also, because we hadn’t really talked about how to end it, we just ran out of steam at the end. We could’ve faded it easy, but I’m glad we didn’t. It would have been wrong. It’s this soul-deep empathy that keeps Big Daddy Neil coming back for more. They feel it like you feel it, they aren’t phoning it in. It’s not about the paycheck.”

Ralph Molina, Billy Talbot, & Phil Lee

Indeed one of the album’s greatest charms is its ragged, dangerous, we-could-be-in-jail-soon feel. But as always, Lee brings the words that make us pay attention and climb deep into the all-to-familiar, all-to-common scenarios of friendship and love, of the attainment and the loss. And the damage. A master of sly-dog observation and telling regional colloquialisms, Lee throws out lines none of today’s Americana wannabes could. “I was kickin’ down some doors / I was in my party drawers / Where were you when all of that was going on?” Lee even remakes the title track from his first album, “The Mighty King of Love” and the newer version finds him in a reflective, 4 a.m. frame of mind, the impish smart-ass persona of the original replaced by a man who’s seen the damage love can do and is still feeling the aftershocks. Some of Lee’s characters are survivors, but there’s accompanying wreckage that can’t be put entirely out of mind. Both “Turn to Stone” and “Wake Up Crying” work this ever fertile psychic turf.

Neil Young Says: "SPONSORED BY NOBODY" + Midwest Solo Shows Coming

SPONSORED BY NOBODY
via NYA T-C

After several days of high drama surrounding the Hyde Park concert announcement fiasco, Neil Young emphatically states that he is: "SPONSORED BY NOBODY".

The 2019 concert of Bob Dylan & Neil Young in London on 12 July "will proceed without Barclays as a sponsor."

Apparently, the growing #BoycottBarclays movement has caused Barclays "The Dirty Bank" to drop sponsorship. Power to the people, once again.

More details on tickets will be available "soon".

Also, Midwest Solo concerts are coming with a NYA Presale beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Neil Young: "Its been a massive fuck up!
Subsequently, the NYA team has had many ‘Come to Jesus’ meetings."

So we here at Thrasher's Wheat are thrilled to see Neil once again stand up, speak out and take action. As stated previously, we are totally down with Neil on getting righteous about the rampant unethical promoters and shady dealings.

So thanks Neil and Elliot for doing the right thing.

Neil Young & Barclays Bank: The Concert Sponsor and The Damage Done

The #BoycottBarclays movement continues to pickup speed after this weekend's outraged passion pledge by Neil Young over the Hyde Park concert sponsorship.

Subsequently, the NYA team has had many ‘Come to Jesus’ meetings."

In a 2018 report by the Rainforest Action Network on fossil fuel funding, Barclays "The Dirty Bank" scored a D+ on tar sands, a D in Arctic oil, and a B- in the coal mining category.

Neil Young continued his campaign against Barclays' fossil fuel funding in a posting titled: BARCLAYS BANK : Dark Decisions at the Top.

"BARCLAYS BANK : Dark Decisions at the Top"
    via NYA T-C

Many Neil Young fans seemed to solidly support his taking a strong stand -- even at the risk of this potentially jeopardizing the whole affair. A comment on Neil Young is Pissed: Poor Coordination on Hyde Park Gig with Dylan by Dwayne:
I've seen Neil Young at Hyde Park before, but what I don't remember, and what truly sickened me about this gig, is the segregation between members of the audience as per the "Diamond Circle" and "Gold Circle".

When I saw Neil Young at Hyde Park formerly - and at other similar large events, the ticket price was pretty much a flat fee, and if you found your way to the front, then so much the better. Separating people on the basis of what they're prepared to pay means that only a privileged few will get anywhere near to the stage. That is not acceptable and is about as far from rock and roll as you can get.

Frankly, I'm elated that Neil Young has taken a stand on this. It clearly shows that he's a man of integrity who genuinely cares about his audience. As it is, the UK is completely blighted by these greedy and nauseating companies ripping off the concert-going public. How refreshing to see Neil Young challenging their behaviour. I don't know how this situation will play out ultimately, but hearing about this has made my day.

And well done to the staff of Thrashers Wheat for also playing their part in restoring my faith.
Many thanks Dwayne and couldn't agree more that enough is enough. As Neil writes: "Dark decisions, once safe, may now have dark consequences." We hope hope not either.

As noted yesterday, Neil Young "will be taking the rap" for this debacle.

Neil Young: "I Will Be Taking The Rap"

But is there a bit of irony here? Or possibly the dreaded "hypocrisy"?

Neil Young: "I Will Be Taking The Rap" | Elliot Roberts: "I personally really must apologize for this lapse..."

Neil Young: "I Will Be Taking The Rap"

As we posted last night, Neil Young is very angry about the Bob Dylan & Neil Young Concert: Hyde Park, London - 12 July 2019 announcement recently made "without my knowledge."

Now, in today's Song of the Day, "Who's Gonna Stand Up?", Neil Young comments that "I Will Be Taking The Rap".

    Neil Young
Zollhafen / Nordmole, Mainz, Germany 28 July 2014
Photo of the Moment by Takahiro Kyono | Flickr

Neil Young's full reaction on NYA. Primarily, the corporate sponsor Barclays Bank is a "fossil fuel funding entity." But more infuriating was the lack of coordination with promoters in the announcement which caught everyone off guard.

Neil Young: "There’s no doubt about it - Its been a massive fuck up!
Subsequently, the NYA team has had many ‘Come to Jesus’ meetings."

    Image via NYA

We here at Thrasher's Wheat are totally down with Neil on getting righteous about the rampant unethical promoters. In fact, we're totally down with everyone also getting down on corruption and speakin' out.

Neil has been trying to be as upfront as he can with the NYA subscriptions. So, as soon as the site finally launches and ... BOOM. What might have been the biggest pre-sale the site will possibly ever see again suddenly goes out the window. The concert of a lifetime for both Bob and Neil's entire respective careers and yet the rollout is so totally f-'ed up by the greedy hands.

Respect, trust, full disclosure, transparency are what matters and Neil's taking the stand. Taking the rap.

So who else is gonna standup?

    UPDATE:

Now, it looks like Elliot Roberts, Neil Young's long time manager, is gonna standup.

Elliot Roberts: "I personally really must apologize for this lapse..."
    via NYA: Time-Contrarian

Thanks Elliot and Lookout Management for standing up and taking the rap with Neil.

Now how about Dylan's management? The Promoters? Are they gonna stand up?

This is about Dylan's management taking advantage of Neil's fans by having a jump at best seating options for a historic concert.

Elliot Roberts says: "We will make every effort to ensure that this doesn’t happen again."

Nope. Sorry. Doesn't cut it. There never will be another Bob Dylan & Neil Young summer time concert in Hyde Park for 50th anniversary of Woodstock.

We say: Start Over. Take the hit. Back to starting blocks and give everyone a fair shot.

You guys fucked up. Now pay for it. Not some lame apology and promises about next time.

Make it right. Cough up the f-n $'s, dudes.
“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.

    There's also a negative side.”
