Concert Review of the Moment: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Paleo Festival, Nyon, Switzerland - July 23, 2013

"Like A Hurricane"
Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Paleo Festival, Nyon, Switzerland on July 23, 2013
(Click photo to enlarge)

There are quite a few epic songs in Neil Young's vast catalog.

But what makes "Like A Hurricane" often especially spectacular when played is not what happens just on stage but all around it simultaneously. As we have seen over the years, the song's performance sometimes seems to literally alter the weather to create the ultimate alternate state of reality transporting the audience to far away dimensions.

Such is the case at the Paleo Festival, Nyon, Switzerland on July 23, 2013. The Concert Review of the Moment is from the Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert by wolle:
July 24th nearly 6 o clock in the morning..comin back home by car after a long ride 430km from western switzerland, all clothes , all is wet, wet as can be after all that....

First all of it started in a very good mood, nice weather and a beautiful organized paleo festival , it was my first time there and i was overwhelmed by the people there, all continents were there , african musicians, asian people, food and art and music from all over the world.

The concert of neil young and the horse began at night at 23.00 pm and it started with an epic long version of love and only love, got over to powderfinger with 3 solo parts after another, moved over to the psychedelic pill and a tremendous burning thundering walk like a giant over to hole in the sky and then the acoustic part began with heart of gold. After that song, neil was not comfortable with the hank williams D28 , was not in tune ...the new larry who looks like andy warhol had to come out and tune hanks guitar on stage while neil was standing there grinning.

At blowin in the wind it happened a lyrics mistake and at comes a time he had a wrong chord but didn't matter^^ then he started with singer without a song and no woman with a guitar bag was seen on stage the first time he played that xD but as he started playin that a cold wind came around the scene and thunderbolts and then it began slightly to rain...neil saw that and played it til the end , stood up from the piano and then the wind came mighty and blew his black hat from his head away! Neil was surprised , saw that rain also from the roof comin down on stage and the flashings at heaven . He ordered the organ to get it down on stage and they began like a hurricane to play!

The thunderstorm now was more and more heavy and like the monsoon at australia the storm blew us nearly away we got wet all around and neil and the horse played the strongest, most brutal but also melodic and most emotional hurricane ever heard at concert!!! he sang nearly 6 verses of hurricane he played solo 100 times over hurricane, at the end of the song he started again from the beginning and all culminates into an extended excessive sound and thunder , that was so incredible to the whole scene all around !

The audience was so great and cheered to the boys on stage tremendously so they played on and on. Neil saw the wet audience gave hurricane a thunder ending and moved immediately over to rockin in the free world and the water of the monsoon came rollin down from the hill behind me and right beside me so i stood in a lake!

We cheered the horse and held the line like soldiers at a kamikaze mission and neil and the horse appreciated that much that they came at the end of rockin to the front of the stage and bowed to us neil prayed to us, after they decided to break down the concert because of the incredible storm and too much rain . I thought while he played hurricane, now it is the right moment to die , have no fear, neil and the horse are staying with you, leading you the way to the nirvana, while the stage bursts and break down on me.

i couldn't imagine such a concert in my hardest dreams and it took place reality! It was a spiritual moment feeling the power of nature the storm and the energy the horse played and filled the earth altogether with that enormous power and thunder . That was really magic! After the concert broke down i try to get to my car walking through rivers that the rain caused and found my car and could get out of that mud , drove many hundred kilometres through thunderstorm through switzerland to germany back in the prairies where all was dry but all things i had were almost wet and i was still alive-
Very, very cool wolle! We've had the privledge of some epic LAH ourselves, but never the total 3D experience. Maybe someday...

Interview: Crazy Horse Bassist Billy Talbot | Rolling Stone

Billy Talbot & Neil Young

(Click photo to enlarge)

A lengthy interview with Crazy Horse Bassist Billy Talbot in Rolling Stone by Andy Greene.

Here's just one interesting comment that says a lot about the whole Neil deal...

Q: It would be so easy to play two hours of hits and then one or two new songs. That's what most other bands do in your position.

Billy Talbot: When we were in Australia, we were in the same hotel with Kiss. We heard that one of them said, "I have the best gig in the world. I've been playing the same 17 songs for 35 years." We heard that and it didn't sit right with us.

Our job isn't easy. It's not meant to be easy. Our job is to keep the edge, be out on the edge, always seeing, exploring the limits of what we do and who we are, never letting up. Spiritually and cosmically, not to sound all hippified, but we don't sound good unless we're really connected and on the edge of everything.

Comment of the Moment: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert in Stuttgart, Germany - July 22, 2013

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Stuttgart, Germany - July 22, 2013

(Click photo to enlarge)

The Comment of the Moment is from Neil Young & Crazy Horse's concert in Stuttgart, Germany - July 22, 2013 by Wiindigoo:
“How could people get so unkind?”

At this particular landing zone of the alchemical psychedelic mothership, I was riding the Holy Rail stage left. Like Mr. Leighton writes, emotions ruled and rolled.

The prayer in Love and Only Love, “Spirit come back to me, Give me strength and set me free, Let me hear the magic in my heart” was like the full moon pulling all of that water around inside my head until it was leaking out of my eyes. Ideally, perhaps, the venue at Mercedesstraße 69 would have a retractable roof so that we could all cool off and the moon could play along, but Luna was a definite session player in the proceedings. It the only date on the European leg coinciding with a full moon (see the moon icons on http://www.neilyoung.com/tour.html), and the Horse was on stage maybe an hour and a half after the exact full moon moment (19:16 at UTC +1). Those heavy tides resulted in yet more anonymous rantings above, matched in comedy by the staged Alchemy road eye fights, and the emotional weight of countless sublime moments.

Considering it was 22 July in the middle of a German heatwave, it did appear that we were involved in a sweaty summer rock concert. That may have been a factor for a woman also clutching an unholy break in the rail who got overwhelmed with boozy consequences midway through Hurricane, or maybe it was her gut reaction to the deliciously heinous bass frequencies from Poncho’s tie-dyed suspended Danger Bird organ rig. The hairs on my arms and my internal organs were surging in the unparalleled deep bass waves. The onstage stacks produced a massive range of sounds and the clarity and intensity of the vocals revealed so much undiscovered poetry. At the Berlin show that opened the European tour, these new lyrics eluded me: “The tracks ahead were long and straight, We were riding on a desert wind, We were pulling in the spiritual, Riding on the desert wind…” But last night, Neil as the gunslinger led the Crazy Horse ka-tet through to the spiritually shining lights. The poetic imagery of his storytelling shone through, and he connected directly with so many of us. Mr. Reindl’s Full Moon Hurricane definitely happened.

As in so many shows this tour, they connected with each other in joyful ways, like Billy sharing an intimate laugh with Neil after Surfer Joe or Neil reaching out and holding onto Ralph after his long walk around the stacks from the drum kit for the final bow. At the piano bench, Neil may have had to ask, “Can someone turn off that fan? It’s louder than I am,” but I don’t think anyone other than Anonymous Number Two can say that they didn’t enjoy themselves. I’ve never felt closer to these guys, their music, or myself as a soul lurching and dancing around on this hot spinning planet than I did last night.
Thanks for sharing Wiindigoo! Great memories.

Comment of the Moment: Message from Crazy Horse Personnel

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Köln, Germany - July 12, 2013
(Click photo to enlarge)

As mentioned previously, much discussion on the intent of Neil's nightly "Message from Crazy Horse Personnel". Is this the farewell tour? Or just a friendly wave goodbye?

So is there really more to the words than meet the ears?

Here's the Comment of the Moment on Message from Crazy Horse Personnel + "Roll Another Number" - Luxembourg, Jul 11, 2013 by Hounds that Howl:
My interpretation on this section of Neil's "So Long and Good Night" speech is he is being all inclusive. The "We" to whom he is referring is All of the Crazy Horse Personnel (those on and off stage) and each member of the 20,000 plus audience at each concert. The audience and Crazy Horse meld in to one body grooving to the music and the message from the muse. So, I believe he is speaking to all of us because we have all become one.

As far as Poncho's gestures/theatrics, he's always been the most demonstrative of the three on stage. He's continuously interacting with the audience. Billy and Ralph quietly go about their craft, and I'm sure sometimes Ralph is watching the Yankee game on his iPad.

Is Poncho signaling something or is it Poncho being Poncho? As wise man once asked me "What's in a gesture?" Every time I go see a show, any show, I just assume it will be the last time I see the musicians so I stay in the moment, in the groove, be with their muse and enjoy the ride.

Thanks Hounds that Howl! Have to agree that Neil's comments are directed at both the band and the audience. A wise man indeed. Oneness is goodness. :)

However this plays out, the music will go on forever.

'Live at Third Man Records' Album Featuring Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Jack White, Norah Jones, others

Vault Package #17
Live at Third Man Records

(Click photo to enlarge)

UPDATE: A comment blow clarifies info in this post.

Earlier this year, Neil Young and many others, went to Nashville to honor Willie Nelson's for his 80th birthday.

Jack White's Third Man Record Booth was setup for the occasion and Neil Young stopped by and recorded a song in the booth. Songs featuring Young include:
"Sail Away", "Long May You Run" and "Whiskey River" with Ashley Monroe, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, and Jamey Johnson.

Neil Young
Jack White's Third Man Record Booth

Now comes word of a release from those "booth sessions" from Willie Nelson Gets 'Live at Third Man Records' Album Featuring Neil Young, Jack White, Norah Jones • exclaim.ca by Alex Hudson:
Now, that visit is being documented with the latest package from Third Man's rarities-oriented subscription series the Vault. The package includes a live album, a poster, and a unique 6-inch record featuring Nelson and White.

The Live at Third Man Records album is credited to Willie Nelson & Friends. It features a host of high-profile guests including Neil Young, Norah Jones, Leon Russell, Sheryl Crow, Ashley Monroe and, of course, Jack White.

The three-sided release comes on so called "smokey grey" and "bio-diesel green" vinyl, with the blank D-side featuring an etched graphic of the famed palomino horse Trigger.

As for the 6-inch record — which is the label's first-ever record of that size — it was laid down in Third Man's recently unveiled vinyl recording booth. It's pressed on transparent yellow vinyl and housed in a die-cut sleeve, and features White and Nelson duetting together on "Red Headed Stranger." It was presumably easy to fit the song onto the small 6-inch record, since the booth only allows for recordings of 111 seconds or less. The B-side is an etching.
Live at Third Man Records:

1. Roll Me Up
2. Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground (ft. Ashley Monroe)
3. Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain (ft. Ashley Monroe)
4. Funny How Time Slips Away (ft. Norah Jones)
5. I Gotta Get Drunk (ft. Norah Jones)
6. Sail Away (ft. Neil Young)
7. Long May You Run (ft. Neil Young)
8. Far Away Places (ft. Sheryl Crow)
9. Whiskey River (ft. Neil Young, Ashley Monroe, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Jamey Johnson)
10. A Song for You (ft. Leon Russell)
11. Heartbreak Hotel (ft. Leon Russell)
12. Red Headed Stranger" (ft. Jack White) (broadcast version)

Neil Young

Can't you just hear that nice, warm analog sound radiating off that vinyl?

Uncut Magazine Editorial on Neil Young's Audience: Walk Like A Giant

Uncut Magazine
August 2013

The latest issue of Uncut Magazine has an editorial reflecting on Neil Young and Crazy Horse's recent Europe tour gigs.

"Neil Young: Walk Like A Giant" by editor Allan Jones, directly addresses much of the audience disconnect that we've been documenting for years now here on Thrasher's Wheat -- most recently on The "Geffen-Like" Reactions to Dublin Concert of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. In fact, the Uncut editorial by Jones could've been written by us in reaction to the comments we often see here.
Last week started on an absolute high when Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s Alchemy tour rocked up to London’s 02 Arena, turbulence in its wake, some of the crowds they had recently played to evidently unhappy with aspects of the band’s current set, notably the long jams around the songs they are playing from last year’s Psychedelic Pill, especially “Walk Like A Giant” and the extended feedback cacophony of its final 10 minutes, which was spectacularly brutal. Audiences in Birmingham and Newcastle had been from all accounts clearly agitated. In Dublin, a couple of days before the London show, there had been boos, which perhaps hasn’t happened to Neil since he took Trans on the road in 1982.

Uncut reader Paul Horton went to the Birmingham gig and was sorely disappointed. Like similarly disgruntled commentators in Newcastle and Dublin, he bemoaned the fact that Neil and Crazy Horse hadn’t played any of the songs he had expected to hear. He cited examples of Neil’s ‘great music’ like “Southern Man”, “Alabama”, “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” and “Old Man”, which Paul seemed to suggest should have been played out of some kind of servile obligation to fans, as if Neil has ever felt ‘obliged’ to do anything apart from what to him at any given moment is important. That the songs he wanted to hear weren’t played Paul described as “shameful”.
And so it goes.

Remaining editorial here with a few tour videos. Or save yourself some time. Watch the videos and judge for yourself.

THE FUTURE OF BROKEN ARROW: Editorial in June 2013 Issue

Neil Young
Vienna - 2008

The latest issue of Broken Arrow Magazine, published by the Neil Young Appreciation Society recently hit the streets and we're now finishing up reading the issue. As always a nice read -- especially as we look back while looking ahead.

In particular, we would like to bring to your attention an important editorial from Scott Sandie regarding the future of Broken Arrow Magazine. We have been in touch with Scott and would like to hear from readers on their thoughts on future publication. Drop a comment below.
The time has come to make changes in the way that Broken Arrow is published. For the past three years we have been struggling with increasing costs generally and the spiralling cost of postage in particular. These increases have (apparently) been required as part of moves to privatize The Post Office here in the UK. The reality is that a magazine that three years ago cost less than £3 to post airmail to the USA now costs £4.20 (nearly $7). That’s an increase of 40%. We have raised subscriptions to cover some of these recent postage increases but you might remember we decided to absorb last years. Presently a US subscription is $41 and needs to go to $45 this year and higher in future. The cost for Europe in terms of increases is no better. In the past many of you have said that you will pay whatever rate is required and many members also make annual donations to the NYAS – some quite substantial. Both gestures are much appreciated, but Jo and I are increasingly uncomfortable with a subscription that could go to $50 or more – it just gets silly.

We have costed out postage alternatives (especially bulk carrier to the US and Europe and then local distribution) but the saving isn’t that significant and this route adds a layer of complexity to the operation. We have also considered printing fewer pages to get the weight of the magazine below 100grams for printed paper – the lowest category possible – and therefore a reduced postage rate. But to achieve that an issue would only be roughly half the size it currently is, and we have rejected that too.

However the NYAS and Broken Arrow have been a major part of our lives for the past 12 years and after 130 issues since 1981 we are determined to keep it going if at all possible. And I’m very conscious that a big part of BA’s attraction is that it is a paper magazine that you can hold in your hands and read at your leisure, without squinting at a screen. I have said in the past that we won’t move to a purely web-based magazine and I stand by that. But we can’t increase subscriptions to the required level and need to find another way forward. Our proposal is this:

Jo and I will carry on doing exactly what we do just now, but Broken Arrow will be made available quarterly as a downloadable file. Subscriptions will be significantly reduced to £5 (or equivalent) per annum The magazine will look almost exactly as it does just now. Those members who are happy reading it on screen can do so. Those who would prefer to read a hard copy can print it off. If you want a neat copy for your collection you can go to your local print shop and have it properly printed and bound, using your saved subscription cash! It might be possible for some kind of ‘print-on-demand’ service to be established in each country or continent, with an agent (possibly an NYAS member) co-ordinating the printing for those keen on that. This possibility will be investigated in the coming months.

We propose to start this new approach from March 2014. To get to this position we will produce paper magazines for September and December 2013. March 2014 will be our first download. The cost of subscription renewals for the rest of this year will be pro-rated on the number of printed magazines you still have to pay for (either two or one). The new subscription rate of £5 (or the dollar/euro equivalent) will start from March 2014. To reduce costs we will be looking to phase out payment by manual cheques; payment will be online, via PayPal or bank transfer online for preference - but by cheque if you really can’t do that. There will be a small number of members who have paid beyond March 2014 and we will allocate future subscriptions at the new rate from those monies (so your money is now going much further into the future!)

I am very conscious there are some NYAS members who do not have a computer and rely on the paper magazine for their Neil Young information. I believe most local libraries offer free internet access and a small charge for printing. Your challenge in the next nine months will be to make sure you learn how to use these facilities so that you can access and print the file off. Once you’ve worked out the routine it shouldn’t be difficult. We hope to run trials in September and December.

In a way, I am sorry we have had to make this decision but we think it is the best option available. However, one big bonus with a file is that the magazine will be in full colour, and should look really good when printed! (Well, if you have it printed in colour…) Up until December 31st we will continue to accept new members but their subscription will also be pro-rated on the number of magazines that they will receive up to March 2014.

One final point. There may be someone out there who would rather take the NYAS and Broken Arrow forward in a new and creative way. Jo and I would step aside in the coming months if someone comes forward with an attractive proposal. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss this and we welcome your thoughts on this whole subject. Remember – it’s your society and your magazine.
When we initially read this, we were concerned about the log term future of both Broken Arrow & NYAS. Keeping these orgs strong and ongoing should be everyone's goal. We've been a supporter of NYAS going into our 4th decade now and hope it continues its long run.

NYAS and Scott would like to hear from readers on your thoughts on future publication. Drop a comment below.

For more information and subscription information visit the Neil Young Appreciation Society or directly contact NYAS editor Scott Sandie at surfer-joe@nyas.org.uk

Don't be denied!

Thanks Scott and everyone who is supporting the NYAS & BA!

This Land is Your Land (onscreen lyrics) by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

From Liner Notes for Americana by Neil Young & Crazy Horse:
This Land Is Your Land

This folk song was written by Woody Guthrie in the 1940s to a pre-existing melody as a response to “God Bless America” which Guthrie was tired of hearing. The lyrics Guthrie sang varied over time, but the lyrics sung in the Americana version were in the original manuscript of the song.

Neil Young's Americana album with Crazy Horse last year has definitely struck a chord which is resonating not only across Americana but the Old World as well.

The songs on Americana reinterpret traditional folk songs in such a way as to breath new life and meaning into them to such an extent as to be almost unrecognizable to those who learned the songs in their childhood.

So how's that "Americana Dream" thing working out these days? Liberty and justice for all, don't you know.

happy independence day!
let freedom ring.
