Archives: Winding Down Open Threads

archives-box-neil-young-needle.jpg

To say these past weeks here at Thrasher's Wheat have been extraordinary would be one of our more understated statements in awhile. We've seen all-time record high server traffic which has caused the TW Platform to become shakey. But more importantly, thanks to everyone for coming by to visit and share.

To paraphrase from post on Neil Young News: Archives Open Thread Friday, 6/12/09 by LIVE RUST:
A standing ovation for Archives Guy for all the info, one on one, time, effort and general "putting up with us all" attitude.

Thanks so much for what has been unprecedented access to an Artist and the Crew involved in this, the first of it's kind!

Amen Live Rust and thanks so much AG!

With that said we'll begin to wind down the Archives open threads as we unpack our PS3 and wallow in NYA bliss for awhile.

So here's the plan.

We're setting up 3 perma open threads that will be sticky linked on right. Archives Guy will check in on occasion as time permits. But if you know the answer to folks' questions, please try and help out, to free up AG to focus on newer issues.

Here are the 3 Neil Young Archives topics:
- Archives Commentary Open Thread
- Archives Technical Questions Open Thread
- Archives Ordering Questions Open Thread

Please follow each thread's topic guidance to keep this resource useful.

Also, see The Neil Young Archives for FAQ's and tutorials.

Again, feel free to post here your concerns and questions. But also try and resolve through your distributor. If you ordered from WB site, call 866-430-6230.

Another source of good answers to questions is good old fashioned search. There is a search box on right about midway down. If you include "Archives Guy" (with qoute marks) and your question, it might just come up.

And -- as always -- see Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About The Neil Young Archives But Were Afraid To Ask.

archives-vol1-logo-sm.jpg

ps - As we mentioned recently, we're dealing with some heavy traffic here @ TW so apologies for slow loads. With the Europe tour and Archives, we have record levels of traffic from around the globe. Quite exciting if you're a data geek, you can watch TW traffic in real time (and always in right bottom sidebar.)

pss - We've just established reciprocal agreements with Amazon Canada and Amazon UK. If you're still looking to order NYA (or anything by Neil, Blu-Ray, etc.) via Amazon, please consider using links on right. Thanks! You'll be helping to support Thrasher's Wheat and keep the servers cool now that hell has frozen over.)

Archives Comment of the Moment: Success on the Borders

Here's the Neil Young Archives Comment of the Moment from Archives Open Thread Wednesday, 6/10/09 by Dan:
Thrasher,

Here's a cool personal story and a tip for those who haven't bought the archives yet.

I had been too caught up in things to get a Blue Ray set-up and figured I'd wait until I had the player to order the BD box set ... i guess it was a combination of worrying about the cost, then some procrastination and doubts about if it would get delayed again ...

then my father-in-law got sick right before the pre-order deadline and I was too focused on these other things to order my set by the pre-order date. Then I read it had sold out and I was pretty bummed out ...

nevertheless, when I saw a few people venting at AG, I posted something tonight: At 6/10/2009 07:04:00 PM (sorry forgot to sign it) to the effect of lets appreciate AG and all that have been helpful in this process and lets be patient, we'll get the archives at some point ...

later I read that someone had gone to Borders and found it there for 40% off I decided I had to give it a shot. So at 9:30PM I checked the link, sure enough there was a 40% coupon, I then called the closest Borders and the guy told me they had one set left and they would put the set aside for me and apply the coupon (which expires tonight) as long as I was there before the 10pm close. I frantically jumped into my car, took the 20+ minute drive (at 85 mph) and arrived at 9:58pm, walked up calmly asked for the set, asked for the coupon to be applied, paid $209.99 + 14.70 (tax) and walked out with the set for $224.69.

I tried to buy a DVD set also to re-sell at 40% off to a rustie but they were completely out ...

when I asked them if I could apply the coupon to a back order, here's what he told me - He said, they can't apply the coupon to a back order BUT, he said they email discounts on DVD sets (which includes BD sets) all the time and 40% off every couple of weeks. To apply the coupon I had to apply for the Borders Rewards cards which amounted to simply giving them my email address ...

for those still looking to buy the BD and/or DVD sets it a pretty amazing deal ... it sounded like they might have more sets in their system ('ie' warehouse or other stores) .. if not, I'd assume there will be a back order and the discounts should recur...

the coupon seems to allow for two sets ... and they said the cost chain wide is $349.99 or $209.99 after the discount ...

Anyhow, I hope others will benefit and many thanks to the person who posted this info tonight! Somehow I can't help but think that what goes around comes around and being grateful rather than complaining helped put this set into my hands at a very affordable price.

Thanks Dan!

Smile on your brother (and sister)...

Don't be denied and don't let it bring you down.

peace & love,
t

NYA Disc #1 Back Cover

From Blu-ray.com - Neil Young Archives Sell Out on Blu-ray:
'Neil Young Archives, Volume 1: 1963-1972', released on June 2, has already sold out of its initial shipment, to the surprise of Warner Music, according to Young's producer Larry Johnson. As the reasons for that success, Johnson cited the ongoing addition of content via BD-Live and the BD listener parties held at retailers.

“About 40 people I know had a party at a Best Buy watching Blu-rays,” noted Johnson. “Stores can do that across the country.”

Johnson believes that people are really attracted to the set's automatic notice of new available downloads each time the BD Live-enhanced discs are played. “This keeps it fresh for Neil, but it drives me crazy,” said Johnson, who is managing delivering updates to fans. “He keeps giving and giving.” Johnson said to next look out for access to a download of concert footage from a past Hollywood Bowl performance.

UPDATE: Amazon.UK is out of stock of NYA and has sent the following message to back order customers (via Dave on Rust):
"Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience, but 'Neil Young: Archives, Vol. 1: 1963-1972 [Blu-ray] [2009]' appears to have been a surprise sellout.

When you placed your order, we believed we had access to more copies - we then discovered that every one of our distributors had rapidly sold out.

Major distributors have thousands of copies on order from the publisher, all apparently awaiting the next print run. As soon as more copies become available, we'll be able to dispatch them to our customers."

Bummer Dave. :( Hope you find your little box at the top of stairs soon.

And for those wonderin' about our link title for the TW NYA FAQ, we can only say:

"Stick around while the clown who is sick does the trick of disaster"

Make sense now??? So, take that 4% Club.

LincVolt Music Video at 2009 JavaOne Conference

Here's a video from the Sun JavaOne conference last week.

In summary, Karen reports:
It’s only about 10 minutes, and it’s awesome.

James Gosling of Sun talkS about Neil and the LincVolt story, and then a video shot by Shakey Pictures to one of the FITR songs (showing LV on the road!), Then talk about how the car works from Johnny Magic and Paul Perrone. It’s epic!

The Sun guy only talks for a second at the beginning and then it goes right into the Shakey Pictures video w/music, then the team talks about the car ... Very Informative.

And LV looks beautiful, as usual. : )

Thanks Karen! Cruise on!

Archives Comment of the Moment: "monumental and staggering achievement"

The Neil Young Archives Comment of the Moment is by curly tops:
well after about 20 hours of viewing, listening and searching i've finally got through the entire archives box set...only to get a text from my friends dave and matt explaining there is more for me to download already and i've missed at least 3 amazing videos: ohio..birds..and buffalo s, in the studio....

This is a monumental and staggering achievement by neil and his gang..the quality and the formatting is way above anything i ever expected and thought id see or hear...there are of course a large majority of songs we have always heard ..but there are at least 40 -50 that are either only found on rare vinyl or havent been heard at all..i thought i owned all neil available as i collected the bootlegs for 30plus years..so its very awesome to have at least 25 songs ive never heard before...

i guess the main attraction are all the hidden goodies that one must search for, mainly on the time line...the footage of the various harvest clips around the barn and with the london orchestra is incredible..the 1969?loner/cinammon girl cafe footage..the neil stealing his own bootleg film...oh the live springfeild audio is jaw dropping..the various 1970 csny video at the fillmore...dance dance dance w crazy horse..and the brilliant version w g.nash..

finally seeing a perfect copy of journey through the past, and LOVING IT, this film is far better than i thought it would be..loads of awesome neil content..i love the early squires vocal recordings to..and the RAPS..man the RAPS throughtout the riverboat disc are sensational..it becomes even more apparent that neil was never the shy, reserved lonesome hippy he is thought of..he was always a cocky, funny, strong willed talkative entertainer...

i'm learning even more just how quick he moved..in 1964 he is with squires..two years later he is working with jack n on those brilliant Springfield songs..then a solo tour then a solo album..then crazy horse..ektin.woodstock/csny/dejavu..the horse tour..goldrush lp..solo tour etc etc..sometimes in the same month..its like he was just moving so fast .jumping from one project to another..he accomplished so much and so much variety in a few short years...this is the beauty of neil(and bob dylan)..

now matter how much we read and listen to them i find our ideas and views of them continue to change and grow year by year...If i have a gripe to make about the archives id like some "decade album" style notes by neil himself..and there is lot of footage that id like to see..especially the mind boggling dutch tv special..the bbc show..and the entire csny fillmore video...

neil and joel should also check out the grateful dead,s complete fillmore and winterlong box sets with the view of releasing the entire canterbury house..cellar door and riverboat recordings as individual boxsets..oh where is the phenomenal busking scene??maybe that will come..these are just small things..

ultimately as someone who owns around 10000 records ranging from 1920 field recordings right thru to sun ra vinyl ..and everything by neil bob beatles etc etc all the boxsets all the brilliant bootleg stuff etc etc..this is the most exciting and brilliantly assembled archival release of all time..this BLU RAY format is sensational...

(now someone please find some danny whitten footage..that is the holy grail for me..danny's guitar on ektin is my favorite ever lp of guitar playing..and for the record the rhythm section on the electric side of 4 way street is my favorite ever rhythm playing after billy and ralph)

go forth fellow men and indulge yourself in the most incredible box set you've ever experienced.

- curly tops

Thanks curly tops!
