Archives Open Thread Sunday, 6/7/09
Here's today's daily open thread on the Neil Young Archives where you can post thoughts and questions.
Archives Guy seems to be checking in on occasion as time permits. But if you know the answer to folks' questions, please try and help out, to free up AG to focus on newer issues.
Got a report? Drop a comment below. No registration required.
Also, see The Neil Young Archives for FAQ's and tutorials.
Another source of good answers to question is good old fashioned search. There is a search box on right about midway down. If you include "Archives Guy" (with qoute marks) and your question, it might just come up.
And -- as always -- see Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About The Neil Young Archives But Were Afraid To Ask.
ps - As we mentioned recently, we're dealing with some heavy traffic here @ TW so apologies for slow loads. With the Europe tour and Archives, we have record levels of traffic from around the globe. Quite exciting if you're a data geek, you can watch TW traffic in real time (and always in right bottom sidebar.)

Folks,
Just a friendly reminder regarding Archives questions and Archives Guy.
Please remember that Archives Guy is a technical production engineer type.
He is not in the marketing, customer service, shipping & handling dept.
Many issues are completely out of his hands.
With that said, feel free to air concerns but try not direct them to AG for resolution. Try and be cool and patient and relax and breathe deep.
He is here primarily to handle issues around playback and enjoyment of the Archives.
Again, feel free to post here your concerns. But also try and resolve through your distributor. If you ordered from WB site, call 866-430-6230.
If still can't get no satisfaction, post issue with your email. AG and his folks have been real good about making things right.
Also, be sure to check the official NYA FAQ: http://www.neilyoungarchives.com/NYAFAQ.html
Lastly, we know there are tons of positive stories out there. But there too busy enjoying NYA to post. But let us know if you come up for air something positive.
Otherwise, don't let it bring you down, it's only the NYA working out the kinks.
Smile on your brother.
peace & love,
t
AG: I'm reposting Jason's question from yesterday. I'm very interested in how the BD-Live downloads will be managed, specifically how we can tell where the new ones are as the total number increases.
Overall I'm enjoying the set immensely, especially the sound quality!
thanks, Zak
"-The other day you said, "A blue pin means that you haven't downloaded, a yellow pin means that it's been downloaded, a white pin indicates something that is already part of the disc." Well, my "I Wonder" download still has a blue pin...not a big deal or anything but is this normal? Are the pins not switching to yellow ones after downloading now?
-Also, you refered to a download manager on several occasions - is there a specific NYA download manager we can access on our discs or are you talking about a player specific (in my case, PS3) download manager? The PS3 one doesn't really tell me any details about content."
good day archives guy,
a quickie:
To what specific live download content does the preview Blu Ray disc provide access :
a)only the segment of the timeline covered by disc 0; or
b)the entire timeline covered by Volume 1?
VERY much enjoying my DVD set! Thanks for all of your help here at TW.

Hey folks.
You wouldn't believe how frustrating it is here in the uk
reading all the comments from people that have been reading/watching the archives for over a week now.I ordered mine in march from WB in the states am still waiting!Got the ps3 fired up,hd tv plugged in,homebrew in the fridge. How long how long aaaah!Perhaps neil can deliver mine (BD set please)to hyde park on the 27th ,i'm the impatient looking one near the front!Cheers
p.s.saw archives available on dodgy mp3 download site earlier wasn't tempted at all!
Hi AG,
I decided to pay the extra dough and buy BR from WB, to be more loyal than to buy from a discount
site with free shipping, assuming that more bucks willfall back into Neil's hands....I see this is not your department but does Neil make more money if we buy from WB thanthe wholesalers that are selling them at a discount?
I'd rather give to the right source...cuz
loyalty and royalty count to me...
just wondering if my assumption is correct?
Question for AG or anyone else:
I believe this question was asked yesterday but I didn't quite understand the answer. I have the Blu-Ray version of NY archives. (Prior to purchasing the NY Archives set I was not hooked up to "BD Live") I hooked my Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray Player up to my modem and after some fiddling around I got it to connect to the internet. I received a message that NY had mail for me and would I down load it. Of course I did. Now, when I go to that part of the time line the pin is still Blue. My question is:
I thought I read that the pin was to be Yellow for those treasures that were down loaded? My "down loaded pin has remained blue" Also it seems when I click on the blue pin it takes a about 20 seconds to load so I assume it's actually not down loaded to my system but rather stored somewhere and accessed via my Blu-Ray player?
This is not a complaint just a question do I need to do anything differently to change the color and make it quicker to play?
Sorry if the question is hard to understand I hate writting techinical stuff I barely understand.
Lars
On March 23,I also ordered from WB through Neils site but have not received the Blu Ray box.WB returned my email with anywhere from 6 to 10 business days for delivery outside USA. Product shipped June 1.

Aint got no archives.Got mashed potato.
Hey archives guy.I enjoyed your comments regarding "aborted launch"of mp3's it made me laugh and for a moment i forgot i'm still waiting for my blu rays!
I'm 17 years old, and upon obtaining a job at the local Wendy's, I was able to get the money to buy a dvd copy of this set, and after spending most of the week getting intimate with the set in a series of long nights. theres something that I still can not find. In an old preview for the archives it showed a scene of stills and crosby with Neil in the studio doing vocal overdubs to alabama. I was really wanting to check this out, and was wondering if anyone found it on the set.
thank you, I really appreciate it.
i think it's part of
journey through the past
Hoping someone can answer a technical question for me. I bought the Neil Young archives box and I'm trying to figure out a way to get 24/192 audio resolution. Is this possible with an optical cable? My NAD amp can handle 24/192 but I'm not so sure my Philips 9000 Blu-Ray player can output at that resolution. I'm also not sure if an optical cable can handle 24/192. The owner's manual says that if I choose "bitstream" the signal is untouched. Can I be sure of this or does it downsample? Archives guy said the optical out on the Sony Playstation downsampled. Is this specific to the Playstation only or are all optical cables unable to transmit at 24/192? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
DB
Hey, Damon.
I had the same question. After some research and helpful comments from members of the forum, I came to the following conclusions:
1) Optical can only transmit up to 96/24
2) If you have an HDMI receiver with HDMI 1.2 or earlier, you cannot get the 192/24 resolution via HDMI
3) If your player has multi channel analog outputs and your receiver has multi-channel analog inputs, use the analog connections to achieve 192/24.
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong on this....
What I'm not sure about is my NAD T 753 says it can convert up to 24/192. It does NOT have an HDMI input. So how does one get a full 24/192 into it if not via optical or coaxial cable? From what I've read "bitstream" on my Philips sends the signal "as is." When Archives Guy was referring to the optical being downsampled I thought there might be a chance that was specific to the optical out on the PS3 and not specific to all optical Toslink cables. Anyone care to enlighten us on this topic?
did i read somewhere theres 13 hours of vids? s list would be great!in the meantime ill keep poking around!
Damon,
Use the analogue two channel outputs and you will get the full audio experience. The optical will not give you this.
Two more days to go here in the UK and Amazon should finally be delivering my blu ray set!

Hey AG -
The Sea Of Madness – from the original soundtrack album Woodstock........is it true that this recording is actually from the Fillmore East a month later? (not sure why Neil would describe it as the version from the original soundtrack versus Fillmore East xx-xx-1969?)
One more question if I may....is there any way of downloading the mp3s if you haven't received your Archives yet? (ordered Blu-Ray from neilyoung.com). No complaints, but am getting excited to listen to some early Neil stuff.

Anon @ 3.57 - there's nowhere near 13 hours of video. There's supposed to be 20 videos, most of which consist of one song. But what is there is superb & will stand up to much repeated viewing & listening. I'm currently trying to work out what the total duration of audio + video content is as that was something I was curious about before buying the set. There's a lot though - I'm on my third day of intensive archive exploring and have played just about all the audio and video once (not counting the previously released live discs), but have yet to properly go through all the photos & documents.
HEADLINE:
TEAM ARCHIVES SAVES MUSIC WORLD
Based solely of the preview disk so far(god, please come on Monday) I am addicted to Blue Ray. And the recordings on this disk are primitive, but they sound amazing. Each note has so much texture. And so I want to ask Archives Guy, and Team Archives, (minus Neil) to help save the music world, at least my music world.
I know that I am extremely lucky that my favourite artist of all time, Neil Young, thinks the way he does. And has taken care of his archives, and created them in the first place, and is now sharing them with his fans. But I am also very deep into the music of Lou Reed, Ray Davies, Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison. And they all have their own very deep archives, but don’t seem to view them Like Neil does. I will never stop dreaming until I have 5 volumes of the NYA plus 5 volumes of the LRA, and the RDA, and the BSA and the VMA. All on Blue Ray!!
I am asking Team Archives independent of Neil to take this technology, this ability and show others what can be done. All these guys say the same thing, ‘I’m not interested in my past.’ But when they die someone’s going to put it out anyway. So why not take control now.
Archives Guy, simply take the NYA and visit the 4 other Grand Masters of Song and show them. I’m sure they will see how it benefits them on so many levels.
This is knowledge to be shared and to help shape music.
Hey dolbero: I know exactly how you're feeling. I'm also from the UK and it's really starting to get to me now! I've got everything set up and ready to go - PS3 & HDTV, beers in the fridge - the anticipation is killing me! I've booked all this week off work too, partly because i'm due some well earned time off, partly (ok, mostly) because of the archives!
I've had confirmation from Warners that my Blu-Ray set has shipped so hopefully us UK folk should have delivery by Tuesday. I also ordered the CD version so I can listen to the archives in the car and stick them on my ipod. I ordered this from Amazon and have also just had a confirmation email telling me it's been shipped! So fingers crossed everything should be here in the next couple of days and I can enjoy my week off! Just need to find something to do tomorrow now!

To WELD: The song log at the back of the book shows "Sea of Madness" is indeed from the 9/20/1969 Fillmore East show. I imagine the Woodstock citation in the more generic track listings is just for frame of reference, as that's where it was officially released.
Babs
p.s. - anyone else out there waiting for the Sony BDP-S560 notice that the Amazon listing now says it won't be available until Aug. 17? Give me strength to carry on ...
The version of Sea Of Madness on the original Woodstock album was this same Fillmore East version from Archives.
Those that have the Archives vol 1, please list your top 5 songs (not previously released). I can afford to buy a few via iTunes.
1.EVERYBODY'S ALONE
2. Slowly Burning
3.Bad Fog Of Loneliness (on North Country)
4.1956 Bubblegum Disaster( you may not want to buy this though...
5. Wondering (from Topanga3)
Thanks Horse!!! FYI, iTunes charging $1.29 a song, and the only songs not purchasable are: Words, Cowgirl and Down By The River.
13 hours of vids?
That was some dumb thing that a reviewer wrote and not true.
Weld-
Sea Of Madness Woodstock.
Yes, the performance on the Woodstock soundtrack album is indeed from the Filllmore East, not the festival.
It is described as being from the soundtrack because that is how where this recording has been previous released.
No sign of Amazon UK shipping Blu-Rays yet... ARGH
wow,so why was that on the woodstock sound track? Was it even played there?
AG, why aren't the Mynah Birds represented here at all? Seem it should be at least a foot note...Neil was signed to Motown for minute there
Sea Of Madness was played at Woodstock, the song intro on the album was from there, though the song itself was from the Fillmore. There is lots of that type of thing going on with the original Woodstock LP's. Studio overdubs, Arlo Guthrie's performance is live-in-studio, Mountain's tracks are from a completely different show, etc.
AG: Just ran across some issues with the Bluray version, playing on my PS3 with the most updated firmware. All are on disc 1, the Buffalo Springfield disc.
Track 1 - Flying on the Ground is Wrong - the Dick Clark interview video will not play.
Track 6 Mr Soul - the Hollywood Palace video will not play.
Track 13 The "I didn't have much to do with this" audio track skips.
Any info on these problems?
Also, as previously asked, my pushpin for "I Wonder" remains blue instead of yellow. How are the future BD-Live tracks to be managed? As far as I can see there is no download manager screen.
Thanks for your time, Zak
Thats funny cause if you read the liner notes to the woodstock soundtrack it talks about making it "required a level of endurance from both man and machine previously unheard of in location recording" and the technical flaws..."consider them like the scars in fine leather, proof of the origin and authenticity of the material in which they are found" lol

Quotes from the FAQ page:
"Blue pins indicate new BD-Live content that has not been downloaded yet. These blue pins turn into yellow pins after download is complete."
"Downloaded content appears on the Timeline as a blue push pin."
These statements appear to contradict each other. I have yet to see any yellow pushpins. Any thoughts?
thanks, Zak
Hello Zak.
Archives Guy has it backwards.
BD-LIve download files have a Yellow pin BEFORE download and a Blue pin AFTER download.
The "baked in" the disc pins are always White pins.
I'll call Archives Guy and get him to address.
Willage, you guys have done an awesome job. Thanks for striving to bring the fans an exceptional product... cant wait for Vol.II (hope its not too far away)
What, someone that knows more than archives Guy?
Archives Guy?
Will Mitchell....You and the rest of the extended Archives team have our sincere admiration!
Great work!
Take a bow, and i'm sure, by now, you need a nap, as well!
Kudos
Dang! Just like the top brass to bust ya on a mellow Sunday afternoon.
I had the pin color for downloaded/not downloaded backwards reversed. This shall be fixed on the Q&A page.
Got the phone call while listening to "It's All Too Much" by the Beatles.
CORRECT VERSION:
- There are 3 colors of pins on the Timeline. White pins point to content that is already on the disc. Yellow pins indicate new BD-Live content that has not been downloaded yet. These yellow pins turn into blue pins after download is complete.
-Archives Guy
Oh AG. You were probably just thinking "out of the blue, out of the blue . . ." ... Those things happen to us all the time. I mean, out of the yellow into the blue just doesn't make sense. If you guys had made them turn from (out of the) blue and then (into the) black we all would have gotten it instantly. : ) lovekaren
re Mynah Birds ...
Neil is not in control of those tapes, Motown is. He does not have thje rights to them. Unless he coughs up the bucks! That's why you don't see them on the Archives.
Many moons ago, when i first started listening to Neil (late 80s), i had a tape that included Harvert-era outtakes. I lost this tape years ago (right around the time i got it), but i want to say it included outtakes of Heart of Gold etc, played on piano....
Does this ring a bell with anyone? I could be slightly off, but i seem to recall such a thing.
Ironically, on the same tape, was Little Blind Fish (the only song CSNY each had a hand in writing)...I wonder if this will be on Archives?
Also, Pushed It Over The End, another great CSNY song. I believe a live version ended up on a legit Greatest Hits release in....Italy.
That song was also released on Hard To Find, which includes some recent Archives highlights..

Zak,
The NYA download manager can be accessed from the timeline...access the pop-up menu (using the PS3 Blu-Ray remote or the 'square' botton on a PS3 controller) and you should see it! [Thank AG for the info!]

We could be flying away from the world with a cinnamon girl
Purple canaries that fly through the air for a cinnamon girl
Glitter Your Diamonds and rattle your pearls
Maybe I'll buy one and carry home for my cinnamon Girl

Nowhere have I seen talked about what content has been made available via BD-Live. I'm curious what wonderful new info is available to make buying the bluray worth it?
What happened to the song "Big Waves" from the abandoned 1970 album?
Shouldn't it be on the Volume 1?
-- Glenn
I think "big waves" came out in 1978 under the name "powderfinger"....but it's just my guess !
Page 70 of the book has partial handwritten lyrics to "Big Waves," which the footnote identifies as "in progress" from 1968 and adds, "by the time this song was completed in 1975, it had become 'Powderfinger' " - since it doesn't appear in the song log at the end of the book, it appears it was not performed/recorded during the time frame of this set (presumably because it was unfinished).
Still out of stock at amazon.co.uk
Local HMV has a few priced at 199.99, and the assistant I spoke to mentioned that is already marked as "discontinued" on their system, which makes me think it may well be very limited.
So I have the blu ray box but I don't have my blu ray player at the moment. Was hoping the mp3s, you know, part of that EXPENSIVE package I paid for, would help me through it. I know a lot of you here are audio snobs but it is something I paid for, and took into account when paying for. Don't give me the "it's a bonus" thing. It's an advertised part of the package.
This delay is unprofessional and pathetic. I've already put the box in my garage and maybe will listen to it one day. You ripped me off.
We have Archives Guy and Will Mitchell visiting without providing an explanation for the MP3 delay? What's up? I know the "sound geeks" laugh, but I would like to put the Archives on my iPod so can take them with me and listen to the unreleased tunes/versions and get to know them. I could rip my own, but that takes a lot of time. I'll revel in the sound quality at home!
Can someone PLEASE give us some idea when whatever the issue is with releasing them will be resolved? As many have said, this was promised to those of us who bought blu-ray, even if it was an afterthought.

I have been pestering Amazon UK to tell me when I will receive my blu ray set. It has been on pre-order for a number of weeks now with Amazon Prime delivery due June 9th on my doorstep.
Unfortunately beyond confirming that my order is indeed held the customer service folks cannot tell me squat. As of 15:57 UK time on June 8th it's still expected tomorrow but hasn't even begun processing. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it is so utterly, utterly strange that certain people even bought the Blu-Ray set, if all they really wanted was the MP3's. Why didn't you all just get the CD's then?
Anon @ 11:06 AM - some of us bought the BD package prior to purchase of a BD player... after reading some of the stories here we have decided the PS3 is the one for us... the MP3's, crappy as they may be, will do until we get the PS3. Simple as that.
Would have loved them last Tuesday but since I've waited 20+ years... I can wait patiently until AG, WM, and the Archives Team are ready to launch. Looking for the window...
peace & love,
Ron
UK STOCK
it seems that Warners have messed up with the U.K. archives stock and not imported enough. As others have pointed out even Amazon seem short of stock.
We have managed to get stock here at Badlands Records Cheltenham , we can't compete on price with the big boys but we do currently have stock of the CD and DVD set in our shop and available to mail order now . We are trying to source more Blurays but are currently sold out .. but we have had it so it has reached these shores.
Check us out at www.badlands.co.uk or phone 01242227724 / 25

I think that this will go live later today, Monday.

> I think it is so utterly, utterly strange that certain people even bought the Blu-Ray set, if all they really wanted was the MP3's. Why didn't you all just get the CD's then?
I don't just want the mp3s. But I don't have a blu ray player at the moment. As advertised, I fugured I could buy the best box, the one they keep telling me to buy, listen to the mp3s, enjoy the book and have it before it sells out. As I'm not in my home country at the moment on a project, might be some time before I'm around a blu-ray player. They don't come standard in hotel rooms, I can tell you that.
Bottom line is, I paid for this, and didn't get it. Of course I will always love neil for his music, but waiting for so long for this, it pisses me off. Further, like I said above, I gave up on Archives. I've stuck it in a closet.
I expect the mp3s coming today is a blantant lie. It's on iTunes - they have the files. I'm going to go listen to something else and come back to this one day. In the mean while, ripped off.
Hey,
Can anyone out there tell me how to find Loner,Cinammon Girl cafe gig?And I must say I DIDN'T enjoy seeing the naked guys on the Sea of Madness vid from Big Sur.Especially since those poor kids were right next to them.Ugh.Stupid hippies. Why do you think they call it dope.?That scene right there just sums up the whole hippie scene to me.Also from that vid I noticed a teen that looks like the same guy from the Bad Fog of Lonliness vid from Massey. Is that Bruce Berry?Later.
The Mugwump
"Further, like I said above, I gave up on Archives. I've stuck it in a closet.
In the mean while, ripped off."
Wow. Just wow.
You are really THAT impatient? You can't experience one part of the Archives, so you just give up on one of the finest releases of all time? One that is for the historical record, not just this week?
I mean, if you really feel ripped off, I'm sorry, but for other people such as myself, this is about as far from being ripped off as humanly possible. This is nothing less than an EMBARRASSMENT of riches. As in, I'm embarrassed to pay so little for it, considering how much money I have wasted in the past on other releases that have provided nowhere near the quantity or quality of this set.
Trust me, whenever you pull this set from the closet, you'll see that this isn't just some "latest release", and you'll be astounded. It was already in Neil's closet for years, anyway. So whenever it is heard or experienced, this week or in 30 years, it will stand.
Let us know what you think whenever you do decide to check it out.
Mugwump,
The Loner/Cin. Girl video you're looking for is posted on the Topanga 3 timeline (white pushpin...go back and check those timelines for more Neil goodness!

thought i was losing it - really tryin hard to figure out the downloads - purchased the blu ray - turns out the card was NOT IN THE STASH BOX !! hotline says it will be sent out asap - hope I can figure it out when it arrives.
can someone post how it works here? thanx.
