Chrome Dreams is the name given to a semi-fictional Neil Young album from 1977 that was finished but, according to lore, never released.

Young shelved it as he shifted direction and released another album. In the intervening decades this collection of songs has taken on mythological qualities far exceeding the individual merits of the songs; exiting the realm of truth into urban myth, new additional layers to the story have kept on developing. Some have said that an acetate version of the album was bootlegged and even included a booklet, others have dismissed these physical manifestations of the album as baseless rumours. Others still assert that Chrome Dreams is merely the name incorrectly attributed to a collection of recordings that were not released, but that these songs were later re-recorded in different styles and included on subsequent albums. Young himself played off the stories by releasing Chrome Dreams II in 2007. The clearest explanation he has given of Chrome Dreams is as follows:

“What Chrome Dreams really was, was a sketch that Briggs drew of a grille and front of a ’55 Chrysler, and if you turned it on its end, it was this beautiful chick…I called it Chrome Dreams.”

In essence Chrome Dreams is either a snapshot in time of something, a distinctive view that can later be replicated, albeit with a different take or viewpoint, or simply a fantasy state of mind that never existed. It is also the name that David Lunney has chosen for the opening show of Pallas Projects + Studios’ new series of short shows under the banner of ‘Artist-Initiated Projects’. Lunney plays on the mythology and the conflicting views of what Chrome Dreams is, reappropriating it for his latest body of work, which itself is an alternative view of the landscapes of the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. On a base level there are parallels with the reflective nature of the grille described by Young and the apparatuses Lunney uses to create his work. His practice, one which he himself describes as “undertaking [a number] of protracted art processes”, sees the artist create devices which he then brings to the Dublin and Wicklow mountains to photograph the landscape. These images are later rendered in paint or edited as photographs. The creation of these devices, which include mounts for cameras, is a protracted process in itself, with Lunney constructing each bespoke device from scratch in his studio.

Chrome Dreams begins with a sculpture which is based around a sheet of ArtGlass™. This completely clear glass acts an invisible platform for a variety of reflective elements. This portable sculpture was brought to a forest in Ballyedmonduff (Dublin Mountains) where it was photographed in a variety of positions. Two of these photographs have been rendered as drawings. These strange and complex drawings are always the goal of this process; in a sense of reverse-engineering the imagery from the initial sculpture.

So what is it like to be on the quest for the holy rail?

As we know, it's not easy to be a Neil Young & Crazy Horse fan. No one ever said that it should be.

For those who have been following closely the Europe 2013 concert tour, you have come across the adventures of one particular rustie fan known as Uwe from Germany. Even by the early dates, Uwe went from an "unknown legend" to walking like a giant Horse fan.

When we arrived at the Roman arena shortly after 1pm, there was just one other person there, waiting for the gates to open in five hours time.

“I am always number one,” announced Uwe proudly.

Ah Uwe. Where to begin? The kids and I had met him for the first time a couple of nights previously when he and Mrs S went to see Neil Young in Vienne in another Roman theatre.

Neil then provides a "solution" which involves adding an external DAC (Digital Audio Converter) to your iPhone:

The solution

Add a simple external device, some less than the size of your thumb, called a DAC, that upgrades the phone’s lower quality internal DAC. Simply, insert the DAC between the data port of phone (or computer) and headphone, speakers or amplifier, and you’ll hear music at its very best audio quality. Below are some DACs that are well-rated and capable of playing full High Res. They’re available from your local dealers and from Amazon.

Remember, a DAC is not something you need to make ‘Xstream by NYA’ sound better than anything else through your phone; it already is doing that and you can hear it. An added DAC simply will allow you to unlock and hear all of the music, more has ever been heard from any Iphone.

Neil Young's Official Statement on Pegi Young: 1952 - 2019 + An Appreciation

Such A Woman : Pegi Young 1952-2019 | NYA

Neil Young has published an official statement on Pegi Young on NYA.

The message contain the lyrics to his song "Such A Woman" -- written for his wife Pegi -- from the 1992 album "Harvest Moon".

There has been a tremendous outpouring of grief and love over the news of the relatively sudden death of Pegi at age 66 on New Year's Day. Messages and comments began to flood here into Thrasher's Wheat immediately as the news began to spread among friends and fans who shared their heartfelt thoughts on the shock and memories.

Pegi will be missed by so many who knew of her as a tireless advocate for special needs kids.

As a co-founder of the Bridge School in Mountain View, California, Pegi Young's vision changed the lives of children worldwide. In a statement, Bridge School said: "We will do our best to continue her mission. Please keep us and her family in your thoughts and prayers as we keep the dream alive."

The Bridge concerts will be Pegi's enduring legacy as the Bridge School and the annual Benefit Concerts brought so much joy to so many children, their parents and teachers.

Because -- as everyone knows -- the annual pilgrimage to the Bridge School Benefit Concerts was a life altering and transcendental experience.


Welcome to the 2010 Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert by Bridge Kids     The Bridge School   In memory of Pegi and her work, we here at Thrasher's Wheat have made a contribution to the The Bridge School to help further their mission of improving the lives of young people who need "support in finding a voice of their own." That comes through the use of alternative communications, including pictures, gestures and pointing, or computer technology, for young people without ordinary speech or an ability to write and press computer keys.

So consider donating to The Bridge School in Pegi's memory, as "your charitable donation makes a significant difference in the level of support we are able to provide to children and their families locally, nationally and globally," the school states on its website.

Pegi Young: "I came into the game late in life, according to some rulebook.

I’ve been able to continue recording, and I’m quite pleased that I’ve been able to carve out this time in my life to do this. When I went into the studio to make my first solo record [Pegi Young, 2007], I’d been doing backgrounds and some professional stuff with Neil. But I was very shy and not at all self-confident about my ability to carve out a career for myself. Even in the later years, when people asked why I didn’t do this earlier, I didn’t know how, first of all, but I did not have the confidence.

I was terribly shy and I still am, but when I get onstage I let my other side come out."
