"Campaigner" is the Song of the Day on the Neil Young Archives today, September 7.
Hmmm. Why might "Campaigner" be the Song of the Day? Well your guess is as good as ours. Over the decades it has been a routine exercise for fans to replace "Richard Nixon" with whoever the current U.S. President might be at the time. And the song seems to work consistently from Administration to Administration.
So go ahead and play the "Campaigner" game with us.
"Campaigner" by Neil Young - 1976
I am a lonely visitor.
I came to late to cause a stir,
Though I campaigned all my life
towards that goal.
I hardly slept the night you wept
Our secret's safe and still well kept
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got
Soul.
Traffic cops are all color blind.
People steal from their own kind.
Evening comes to early for a stroll.
Down neon streets the streaker streaks. The speaker speaks,
but the truth still leaks,
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got it,
Soul.
The podium rocks in the crowded waves.
The speaker talks of the beautiful saves
That went down long before
he played this role
For the hotel queens and the magazines,
Test tube genes and slot machines
Where even Richard Nixon got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got it,
Soul.
Hospitals have made him cry,
But there's always a free way in his eye,
Though his beach just got
too crowded for his stroll.
Roads stretch out like healthy veins,
And wild gift horses strain the reins,
Where even Richard Nixon has got soul.
Even Richard Nixon has got
Soul.
I am a lonely visitor.
I came to late to cause a stir,
Though I campaigned all my life
towards that goal.
"Campaigner", from the 2017 album Hitchhiker, includes a newly relevant verse deleted from the version that appeared on 1977's Decade: "The speaker speaks, but the truth still leaks."
Will Courtney: Crazy Horse Cover of "Look At All The Things"
'Crazy Love' by Will Courtney
Singer/songwriter Will Courtney has a cover of Crazy Horse's "Look At All The Things" on his new album 'Crazy Love' due out on September 21 on Super Secret Records.
Will says that 1971 masterpiece by Danny Whitten and Crazy Horse "Look At All The Things" is one of his all-time favorite songs. You can check out the track below.
Will Courtney and his band are all diehard Neil Young and Crazy Horse fans and he's a long time reader of this blog going back to the early 2000s. He's been around the indie/Americana Texas music scene for a bit and started with the Austin-based band Brothers and Sisters.
The 'Crazy Love' album flows as if a chronicle of an emotional journey through love, breakup, drowning the pain, reconciliation and the eventual redemption of album closer, “Partner In Time” which is a paean to Will’s wife.
In Neil Young's latest posting on Archives (NYA) Times-Contrarian, he calls out Amazon -- and CEO Jeff Bezos specifically -- for not paying a "living wage" to Amazon employees. Young makes his case that the "World's Richest Man" can certainly afford to pay a "living wage" and utilizes his "friend", U.S. Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, to make the case.
At the end of Neil's statement, he requests that supporters of Amazon paying a "living wage" to sign a petition at Sign Bernie's petition to Jeff Bezos:.
Songs by Neil Young For Weddings: "Rachel Getting Married" | Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
"Rachel Getting Married" (Dir. Jonathan Demme, 2008)
Song "Unknown Legend" by Neil Young (Sung by Tunde Adebimpe)
There are many songs by Neil Young that have been performed at weddings over the decades.
"Unknown Legend", from the 1992 Neil Young album Harvest Moon is a frequent wedding song. Here the song "Unknown Legend" is sung by Tunde Adebimpe in the Jonathan Demme film "Rachel Getting Married" released in 2008. For the wedding scene, actor Adebimpe skips the vows and sings directly to his new wife (played by Anne Hathaway) an a cappella version of Young’s “Unknown Legend”. Also, Tunde Adebimpe is the lead singer of the band "TV on the Radio."
