'Crazy Horse Barn Tour' Coming Says Neil Young | NYA

After clearly indicating no concert tour plans for 2020, Neil Young now says that he will tour with Crazy Horse this year.

Posting on 'Crazy Horse Barn Tour' | NYA, Neil writes that details and tour dates will be announced shortly.

Apparently, scheduling a concert tour has been difficult because of Neil's preference to perform in "old barns" rather than modern multi-functional arenas which must be booked a year in advance.
"This is not the way we want to play.

We decided to play in the old halls, not in these new sports venues that corporations pulled up for their teams. They are soulless and would cost a fortune to appear in.

We don't like these new rules."

RUSTED OUT GARAGE BARN TOUR 2020

Neil Young lists the venues in which he and The Horse have performed but have since been demolished. In addition, there is a listing of about 30 venues still standing.

May The Horse Be With You!

Neil Young & Crazy Horse:
"3rd Best Garage Band in the World"
~~Bill Graham - The Cow Palace, Daly City, California, Nov. 21, 1986

#CrazyHorse4HOF

Bill Graham said that Crazy Horse is "the 3rd Best Garage Band in the World", during the intermission of the final stop of Neil Young & Crazy Horse's 1986 Rusted Out Garage tour. Bill Graham also once called CSN&Y: "America's Beatles".

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - 2012

Jack Nitzsche , Neil Young's producer/arranger on the masterpiece "Broken Arrow", has stated that "Crazy Horse was the American equivalent of The Rolling Stones." IOHO, Crazy Horse is to Neil Young what The Band was to Bob Dylan. As perfect a complement as tequila and salt.

In tribute to Crazy Horse, the "3rd Best Garage Band in the World", here's a look back at some highlights:

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - 2019

So between some sort of cosmically alchemical blend of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones via "the 3rd Best Garage Band in the World", 2020 looks to promise a 'Neil Young & Crazy Horse Barn Tour'?!

they say the best is yet to come...

interesting! I just finished watching "human Highway" and go to the news page there on NYA and I see a potential tour! here in South Florida Neil lists 2 venues that are gone, The Hollywood Sportatorium closed in 1988 and was demolished a few years later. Not sure if Neil ever played there? It was replaced by the Miami Arena which opened in 1988 and closed in ~ 2008? I know Neil played there one time in 1991. That was replace by another Arena in Miami that Neil has not yet played in. Neil also played at the hockey Arena in Sunrise in Broward County w/CSNY 2000 + 2002. That is a newer facility that opened in 1998. The name changes often. the other large location Neil has played a few times is the outdoor Ampitheater in West Palm Beach. Crazy Horse in 1997 + 2003, CSNY 2006. Neil has also played smaller venues here. James L. Knight Center in Miami: Trans solo tour 1983 2 shows, Int. Harvesters 1985, Crazy Horse 1986 2 shows. That place is still standing. Also the solo Le Noise show at the Hollywood Hard Rock in 2010. So there are places here he can play. All depends on how large he wants to go? Hope Nils is available too!

Veterans Memorial Coleseum in Phoenix hasn't changed in 40 years. First time I saw Neil was in the mid-eighties at the Arizona State University Activities Center, which also hasn't changed since then (other than to be branded "Wells Fargo Arena"). Please come to Arizona!

Rialto Theater in Joliet, Illinois built in 1926 would open her arms and welcome you Neil. The music scene here is full of excellent garage bands that play your music live thankfully! Your music is alive and well here in this old blue collar town. But, we would love to have you and Crazy Horse playing here.

The Egyptian Theatre in Boise Idaho only holds 1300 seats but the acoustics are amazing. Unfortunately the Horse would need to spend a week here just to break even. Oh well.... hey, a guy can dream, right?

Peace.

Hey Neil how about a stop at the old Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City? It holds around 14,000 for concerts so it should do nicely for a sold out Horse show. I have been there for an Elton John show in the early 2000's and can tell you the sound in there is great for live music. I don't think he ever played there but it certainly fits the bill as an old hall. Built in 1929 it has beautiful Art Deco styling and also has installed in it what Guinness recognizes as "The World Largest Musical Instrument". A pipe organ with over 33,000 (yes that's 33 thousand) pipes. Would love to hear them fire that thing up for "Like a Hurricane" with The Horse!!

bizarre...either Neil doesn't really answer his own letters or he had a sudden change of heart in regards to touring...either way it is wonderful news!

perhaps he just can't resist the urge to bash 45 around the country as know Pearl Jam will do throughout their spring tour coming up...

whatever - I'll tolerate almost anything to see Billy & Ralph play live again with Neil...hope Billy is up for a tour...Mountaintop showed him to be quite...uhhh...aged

California.

He might do 5-6 shows just in the state of California.

Then you don't have to run around so much.

Alternative: 5-6 cities on the east coast. Lots of travel but easy to get to. Short distances and a good transportation system.

acidfrank Neil played the Hollywood Sportatorium w/ The Stray Gators on February 2, 1973. If ever there was a barn, the Sport was it. I hope that the lack of a crappy, drafty, leaking venue like that currently in South Florida will not disqualify SoFla from the pleasure of hosting a Neil Young & Crazy Horse show.

I first saw Neil at the JL Knight on the Trans solo tour, then saw the Rusted Out Garage tour in '86 at the same venue. I saw him with Sonic Youth at the Miami Arena in 1991, then most recently I saw Greendale at the Coral Sky in '03. After having seen the world's third best garage band in '86, there's a real appeal to seeing the sequel tour to cap it all off. Crossing my fingers.

Hammersmith Apollo (previously Hammersmith Odeon) in London, home of the legendary 1976 concerts would be a good place to start a UK tour.

I agree with Ethan above. The sound at the Erwin Center in Austin, for example, is garbage. Not only is Neil not going to sell that out -- it holds almost 18,000 people for a concert -- it's a big concrete toilet bowl. It has zero charm and the best sound there still sounds like a wet fart.

(That said, I'll go see Neil at the Erwin Center or anywhere else he plays. But if he's trying to claim "the sound matters" when talking about recordings, he should also care about the sound when he plays live!)

Lots of great suggestions here. Unfortunately I’m not certain that Neil visits Thrashers Wheat very often, or at all, but perhaps one of Neil’s Crawlers will stop by and read some of these fine suggestions. I do know that at least one person from the Greedy Hand stops by, as she helped me receive my $300 replica of the Crazy Horse plaid shirt. 🤞🤞🤞

@ rastronomicals - i had based my limited knowledge of the Sporto on Sugar Mt dates page which does not list that show which is rare for them. I moved to SoFl in 1979 so all the shows here since then i went to. i forgot to list the one-off show he did in the park in Miami in 1977. that park is gone i think - the AAA is there now?

Planning a multi-million dollar operation like the tour of a pretty famous rock'n'roll band will include some serious talks with financial and insurance people. If they come to the conclusion that your enterprise is running a high risk, because the country's health system is not prepared to deal with a pandemia, you will hold your Crazy Horse. At second glance as to why the health system of your country is not prepared to deal with a pandemia, you might come to the conclusion that the government's policies in that field are a public health risk and a risk for your business model. There is no such thing as a virus hysteria, its just sound business practice. How come that utter nonsense is not called out for what it is? Nonsense is not an opinion.

I've been a Neil fan for a long time, and saw him play in 5 different decades including in
one of the destroyed "old barns" Neil laments. The Capital Centre wads in Landover MD. It was a terrible place for a show. The acoustics were terrible if one was sitting anywhere but the first dozen rows on the main floor. It was in the middle of nowhere, and only reachable by car. Clearing the lot post show took forever.

The Capital One Arena is about 20 years old, and in downtown Washington. It's situated right on top of a metro subway stop. No car needed to attend the show, and much smaller carbon footprint. Like any big arena, acoustics aren't great, but better than the late Cap Centre.

Nostalgia for the Cap Center is misplaced. For the DMV, NY/CH should play in Cap One Arena, or Constitution Hall (he's played there on multiple occasions). Smaller gyms at GWU or GU would also be preferable to the Cap Center.
