Neil Young Says No 2020 Concert Tour Plans: "I am taking care of my music" | NYA

"I am taking care of my music" - N
"Taking Care" | LTE | NYA

In response to a Letters to the Editor on NYA asking about 2020 concert tour plans, (see "Taking Care" | LTE | NYA), Neil Young writes that it's not happening and "Don't expect anything. I'm not focused on playing. I am taking care of my music".

Without his long-time manager Elliot Roberts to guide, it isn't totally surprising that concert tour plans have been unable to gel.

In response to other Letters to the Editor, Neil Young confirmed the release of "Homegrown" for April, 2020 (more details at Test Pressing of "Homegrown" by Neil Young ). In July, 2020, "Greendale Live" will be released as an album and a movie (more details at Premiere: RETURN TO GREENDALE by Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Balboa Theater, San Francisco, CA - Jan 28, 2020).

In other recent, Neil Young news, the 'Archives Release Survey Results' have now been posted. See analysis and commentary on Neil Young Fans Have Spoken and They Want Pearl Jam?! Archives Survey Results Posted.

Dude, it’s Neil
Literally ANYthing can happen...

Exactly ! Expect the unexpectable...

Neil could find a lost wonderful recording of the Shocking Pinks'era next week and postpone Homegrown and everything else up to another century.

Crazy Horse couldn't tour anyway. Nils is busy with Bruce.

More letters since yesterday. Neil says not only Homegrown in April, Greendale album/film in July, but also NYA2 and Young Shakespeare in 2020!!!! Great news.

P.S. Time will tell 😎

He actually announced that Vol. 2, Rust Bucket and Shakespeare would follow Homegrown and Greendale in release order, but didn't specify a year. Since he's previously said physical releases would be spaced three to four months apart, that would put Vol. 2 in October-November (just in time for holiday shopping?) and likely be the last release of 2020.

Neil did not give a specific time for Archives Vol 2
He did say in an earlier post it would come out in 2020. So Homegrown in April, Greendale in July,
and Archives 2 in November(assumption) IF EVERYTHING GOES ACCORDING TO PLAN
However Neil being Neil things could change on a dime. Homegrown is a safe bet I think but the other
Planned released could easily be changed

Dan, your response begs the question - what was the purpose of the poll and asking people to vote for Greendale or anything else, if it was already decided by Neil that Homegrown, Greendale, and 2 other projects are already scheduled to be next?

If anything, Neil just pissed off his Pearl Jam base by having them come here; having them stuff the ballot boxes; having them win the election; and then leaving them to see that their vote didn't really matter.

Neil became a US citizen to be allowed to vote and to have a voice in the upcoming election, so if this NYA poll is ignored, then what was the point of doing it?

Maybe the NYA poll was a form of propaganda. Feeding us hope for a better tomorrow, by making us believe that we can actually influence what happens tomorrow. We can't influence tomorrow.

If we had a voice, then maybe he would listen to us ask him to release one project every three months until he runs out of projects. Even at that pace he should realize that he won't run out of available projects in his lifetime - or ours.

You heard it here folks, I predict CSNY 2020 this Summer and Fall. I read it in the Letters to the Editor, not directly, but it is inferred. Remember you hear it here first.

@ DREman: you make a valid point. Why have a vote if it has no effect on the outcome. One could make the same argument for our last presidential election.

DRE, there’s a lot to unpack in your, I think the NYA and the Times Contrarian do offer us hardcore NY fans/Rusties hope on some level. We “hope” for certain releases from Neil, we hope that Neil is playing shows that we can attend and get first dibs on tix, and we hope that the articles written and posted in the NYA Times-Contrarian have a positive impact on our future. However, what we do with our “hope” is up to each of us as individuals. NYA is not propaganda. I engage with the Archives for joy, inspiration and fun. How you engage with it is up to you. Neil is not responsible for our hope nor do I think he is trying to be by how he conducts himself in general, or at NYA. Regarding the release of the PJ material from the poll, again, I don’t think Neil gives a sh** about the PJ fan base per se. As we all know, Neil does what Neil wants, period. Maybe the poll was a dumb idea, especially as so few people actually took it. But, if Neil doesn’t want to release the show with PJ first, he’s not going to. I can’t hope for that to be different. It simply is what it is. I enjoy Neil doing things exactly his way. That gives me hope!

@Acoustic Feedback: Neil’s exact words were “For the common good, anything is possible” responding to a request for CSNY to tour for a Vote for change. I’m not convinced that means much, as there are four personalities involved and one would need every one of them to agree. History has taught us that it’s unlikely, but I admire your optimism.

At 2/18/2020 02:04:00 PM, Blogger Blind-Mikey said...

Acoustic, not an effing chance. The relationships among those four, I believe, have been permanently soured. Nash’s and Crosby’s friendship is toast. I think Neil doesn’t tolerate Crosby....etc. Crosby is too cancerous (as much as I have loved him/his music over the years). Neil and Nash wouldn’t put up with the drama that a CSNY tour would bring. I don’t think that tour will ever happen....

A valid sample of opinions could give the pollster important information about the structure of the audience that can be reached, for example it appears to me that the generation who became fans in the 90's are overrepresented. Because it is this group with both characteristics: "old" internet affinity and strong interest in rock music, i.e. beyond listeners for whom listening to music is just a digital commodity. The second largest group are a mixed bag: lifetime fans, both casual and dedicated, maybe also fans who hope for another Nowhere-Type of release. Those at least agreed that there is a gap that might be closed with Early Daze.

A poll is to find out about things, it is not a (political) vote telling the pollster exactly what to do. In the weeks after the announcement that there will be a poll at least Homegrown, Greendale live, NYA Vol.2 and the Rustbucket have been covered by news items and Neil's comments on letters. I believe that all of these were attempts to steer the audience into that direction. That the result is not somehow what everybody expected follows from the all too naive conception (Multiple votes including those of non-subscribers, low profile of the poll on NYA). I think that Neil Young and his camp do know the fan base very well. They must have come to the conclusion that these results represent but a small fraction of the overall picture.

At 2/18/2020 02:15:00 PM, Blogger Dan Swan said...

As far as the vote for future releases, although it was never specified, perhaps the vote was for releases next year. We may have assumed it was for 2020, but Neil has made it clear what he intends to release this year. We all have our favorites we’re hoping for, but just because they may not get released this year does not mean they won’t be coming next year. No one should be pissed off. Everything in its time, and Neil’s in charge of what he decides to do with his work, not us. Just knowing this stuff exists should be enough for now.

@ Acoustic FeedBack - ok, we think you might be onto to something here.

thanks for the speculation. And while we're speculating, maybe at the Autism Speaks benefit Stephen and Neil will hammer out some details? Or maybe CSNY will reunite as a test run?

If that goes OK, then on with a tour?

That's what happened with Buffalo Springfield reunion. test run at Bridge, success, schedule tour.

Although we know how that reunion went....

who says CSNY have to do a tour? Neil says no tours this year. he did not say no shows. we know he is doing the gig w/Stills. so a one-off benefit w/CSNY is possible - its not a tour if you only do 1 show.
