WEBCAST: Austin City Limits: Neil Young & Crazy Horse, 10/13

Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Cinnamon Girl (and Translation Girl) 2012 ACL MUSIC FESTIVAL
Another remarkable highlight is the CG video. See about 4:00 min or so when Neil Young goes over to stage left.
There's a translator in lower left corner who totally jams out and NY follows along. Very funny & touching.

I wanna live with a "Translation Girl"
I could be happy the rest of my life
with a "Translation Girl"...

Photo, Review & VIdeo of the Moment: Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Alchemy Concert Tour

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Kingston, Ontario, Oct. 5
Photos gallery by Andre Bergeron
(Click photo to enlarge)

This has to be one of our favorite photos we've seen come out of the Neil Young & Crazy Horse 2012 Alchemy Concert Tour.

The photo by Andre Bergeron is definitely worthy of clicking thru for enlargement and the entire gallery captures the Horse vibe in glorious black & white.

Also, here's another early review of "Psychedelic Pill" by Neil Young and Crazy Horse on TONEAudio MAGAZINE by Bob Gendron:
Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s first new studio album of original material in nine years gives a symbolic middle finger to modern convention.

Its length is sprawling, its surrealist first song occupies more than 27 minutes of time, and its lyrical content casts aspersions on the present and embraces the past. It is the opposite of the digestible sound-byte fare dominant on the very FM radio band that once championed Young. It is a stubborn and curmudgeonly statement in no hurry to go anywhere, and feels nary an obligation to apologize for its imperfections. It is the unmistakable sound of an artist doing things on his own terms and caring not an iota if he doesn’t make everyone happy. It is noisy, raw, loose, off-the-cuff, spontaneous, and blatantly out of step with what’s often perceived as progress. It is alternatively indulgent and lean, nostalgic and contemporary, humorous and serious, unscripted and planned, frustrating and engaging, simple and complex. It is everything one might expect a get-back-into-the-shed Crazy Horse record should be, and then some, and is likely to irritate the listeners that doubt the performance abilities of Young’s longtime garage-rock mates.

Approached on its own terms, Psychedelic Pill is also another master stroke from an icon who, nearing 67 years old, could sleepwalk through the remainder of his career rather than continue to take bold risks and potentially antagonize—even alienate. But Young has never been about playing it straight, and of late, whether on record or in print, he’s rarely seemed more fiery or outspoken.

Chicago, IL Concert Reviews: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Oct. 11

From Neil Young concert review; Neil Young and Crazy Horse at United Center reviewed - chicagotribune.com by Greg Kot:
But there was nothing particularly genteel or overly familiar and comforting about this music. Like one of Young’s beloved trains, Crazy Horse is a large beast that tends to ease into its work. But once it gains its bearings and picks up speed, it’s awfully difficult to slow down. At least five of the 13 songs performed Thursday surpassed the 10-minute mark. “Love and only Love” began like an extended exhale before finding its pace, with Young, Sampedro and Talbot huddled in front of the drum riser. Whereas most bands spread out to fill a big stage such as the United Center’s, Crazy Horse bunches together, as if defending their home against invasion.

The group works itself into a trance-like frenzy, Young’s guitar piercing through a thicket of bottom-heavy tones and rumbling drums. For the relatively pithy “Cinnamon Girl,” the feedback that shut it down lasted nearly as long as the song itself. The band turned the period psychedelia of Young’s old Buffalo Springfield hit “Mr. Soul” into churning acid-punk. Molina’s drums on “Hey Hay, My My (Into the Black)” pumped like pistons in a factory.

Normally, the encore is a time of a celebration, of release. But Young and Crazy Horse instead shook loose the ghosts of the harrowing “Tonight’s the Night.” Expanded to 10 minutes, the song became a long, lonely howl for fallen friends, a séance. “Tonight’s the night,” Young whispered. “Yes, it is.”

Neil Young & Crazy Horse will be performing tonight at the United Center, Chicago, IL.

Thoughts & Memories on Alchemy Tour: Neil Young & Crazy Horse 2012

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Cleveland, Ohio - Oct. 8
Alchemy Tour 2012
Photos by TW
(Click photo to enlarge)

We are very fortunate to have just returned from attending both the Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Neil Young & Crazy Horse Alchemy 2012 Tour shows.

And, boy, what thoughts and memories we have of Neil and The Horse in all of their splendid ragged glory.

From our vantage point of just off the rail, what we witnessed was nothing less than two nearly perfect nights of rock and roll power delivered with raw abandon yet punctuated with all the fun and delight one could ever want. And more.

To say that we've been lucky is a vast understatement. This was our third lifetime installment of "The Rust Trilogy". We saw the Rust Never Sleeps in 1978, the Weld tour in 1991, and now the Alchemy tour in 2012. While the boys in the band and some of the songs are still the same, life's journey has continued. As they say, "their spirit seems unstoppable." Just ask anyone who has seen the chemistry of the Alchemy tour.

Highlights? Too many.

The Crazy Horse huddle.

The dinosaur stomp of "Walk Like A Giant".

Flipping off Poncho during "Fuckin' Up".

The Psychedelic Mic

The flying keyboard descending for "Like A Hurricane". (Note new tye-die draping for the crying dove)

And good news! Concerts being filmed by Shakey Pictures.

What else?

And of course our fellow rusty Neil fans who get it and know The Way. We're honored to be part of the tribe. See you next time at the campfire.

Love and Only Love will endure.

peace,
thrasher

Concert Reviews: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Pittsburgh, PA, Oct. 9

From Concert review: Neil Young and Crazy Horse rock like a hurricane - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette By Scott Mervis:
That proud little rocker gave way to the night's tour de force, "Walk Like a Giant," a new song that addresses his generation's failings and still-glimmering hopes.

It was a launching pad for a furious jam that sprawled to 20 minutes, culminating in seismic stomps and monstrous bursts of feedback. The sound that comes out of his guitar is unlike anything ever on the musical landscape. It's an old blast furnace raging. It's two battleships colliding. It's Godzilla fighting Mothra. Maybe it's whales, or a metal machine apocalypse. It's frankly hard to describe, but you can check Musician Magazine or Wikipedia if you want the specs.
...
After all that, the main set could only end one way, with "Hey Hey My My (Into the Black)," an anthem for rock 'n' roll, and the people who have lived and died for it.

This, ending with a 13-minute "Like a Hurricane," was a rock 'n' roll show for the ages -- and arguably the best of the year so far -- from four guys who have refused to burn out, fade away, die before they got old ... name your rock cliche. Long may they run.

Neil Young Set List (with the time played)

1. Love and Only Love 9:08-9:21

2. Powderfinger 9:22-9:29

3. Born In Ontario 9:30-9:34

4. Walk Like a Giant 9:35-9:55

5. The Needle and the Damage Done 9:56-9:58

6. Twisted Road 9:59-10:02

7. Ramada Inn 10:02-10:17

8. Cinnamon Girl 10:17-10:21

Fuckin' Up 10:22-10:34

10. Psychedelic Pill 10:36-10:40

11. Hey Hey, My My 10:41-10:48

Encore:

12. Like a Hurricane 10:52-11:05

NEW VIDEO: "Ramada Inn" - Neil Young & Crazy Horse

NEW VIDEO: "Ramada Inn" - Neil Young & Crazy Horse

A comment by BIGCHIEF:
Once again, Neil delivers.

I'm in sensory overload watching the Ramada Inn video. As a child of the mid-fifties it takes me back to those family road trips on the two lanes through this beautiful land of ours. This song and video evoke such emotion for me I wish it were 47 minutes long.

In Neil's book he commented on the concern that the muse wouldn't return after not have written a new song in a year and a half. I think that his new found sobriety may have opened up some new portals of entry for the muse in that his lyrical content appears to be zeroing in on his emotions that may have been buried or masked for the past 40 years.

As one ages it's natural to become more reflective even if you are a 'rich hippie rock star'. Combined that with his sobriety and you have the formula to enter into an entirely new zone of creativity. Crazy Horse has never sounded better. Billy's eloquent fat notes hold down the bottom while Poncho's guitar is distinguishable and not buried in the mix. In this song it almost has 'Whittenish' qualities as he trades licks off Neil and supports the song almost as if he's an extension of Neil. I suppose that comes as a result of these guys playing together as long as they have.

I have a newfound appreciation for Poncho's contribution in this band. An extremely disciplined supporting player that is a huge part of the big sound that is Crazy Horse. That's the beauty and integrity of this band. No ego's, no 'show boating', just four guys gelling together in the moment creating that sound that continues to be the 'soundtrack' to most of the lives of those who visit this site. I just hope that the 'muse' continues to visit Neil for many more years to come and that he remains open and receptive to it when it knocks on his soul.

Neil is an artist who already has an epic legacy enough for ten artists with his vast catalog and history. Even if he were to quit now they will be referring to his artistry and career for decades, possibly centuries to come as the likes of Bach and Mozart, Lennon and McCartney and Dylan. Neil's body of work is already on such a grand scale that they will be regarding him into the next millennium.

Although the song stands alone in all of it's 17 minutes worth of blissful Ragged Glory, some of our younger listeners may not be able to relate to the lyrical content.

I doubt if many of our young folk today have spent day's traveling the two lane black top roads of yesteryear before the advent of the Interstate where you can fall asleep in one state and wake in the next and not know where you are. The only thing worst than traveling the Interstate is flying over the beautiful historical sites and small towns that you would see, feel, and smell when traveling back in the day. No air conditioning back then but rather windows open taking in all of the sights and smells as each state, city and town had it's own distinct personality.

I can really relate to this song as another extension as 'the soundtrack of my life' as I myself have experienced the 'empty nest syndrome' and have had my share of substance abuse issues. So, I guess what I'm attempting to convey is that this song was intended to convey the emotions of one who has lived life while it could yet be a wake up call for those who are just beginning to embark on their own journey.
Once again, BIGCHIEF delivers. Thanks!

Comment of the Moment: "They just don't know The Way"

Lots of chatter thus far on the Neil Young & Crazy Horse tour on a familiar riff we've heard over the decades.

"Why didn't Neil play his hits?"

"I wanted to hear 'Old Man'"

"Too much feedback"

Over and over again, my friend.

To which many responded by saying, essentially, "Get a clue. It's a Neil Young concert. Expect the unexpected. Embrace it. Savor it."

Which brings us to the Comment of the Moment on Concert Reviews: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Kingston, Ontario, Oct. 5 by Sandy H.:
I saw people walking out at Red Rocks. Not a lot, but some. One kid (well, to me he was a kid) stood up about 5 minutes into the feedback ending of WLAG, flipped off the band, and walked out. But I seriously doubt that he was someone who would come to this site.

I get that not everyone is into what Neil does. For some reason, that has never bothered me. To each his own I supposed. I have also never felt the need to try to convince someone they are wrong about what they think. Is that even possible??

It would be about as futile as someone trying to convince me that I am wrong for practically worshiping the man, his humanity, and his music.

If we all felt the same thing and believed the same way, what a bland and uninteresting world it would be. So, I really have no issues with folks of differing opinions, as long as they are respectful of the other point of view. And that goes both ways.

SO, Happy Saturday to my brothers and sisters who share the spirit.

Peace, Sandy

Oh, and in response to a comment posted recently, I would love to see a thread in which we could write/see comments about the book. I have read many reviews, but have not heard much from "us" yet. I'm thinking not everyone has had a chance to read it yet.
Thanks Sandy. Nicely put. We get it. Glad you and so many others do as well.

(And, yes, we'll have more on Neil's book Waging Heavy Peace in the near future. But as for us? We're on the road again...)

And so we leave with just a quote...

"When faceless and anonymous
Come to beat down your door
And say you're all washed up and done
You can just say they have nothing in store

To touch this soul
Because they just don't know
They just don't know
The way
The way
The way"
