Billy Talbot & Neil Young
"Adventure # 3: We held off holding the sign “ Arkansas Girls ♥ Crazy Horse” that Tami had sent from Arkansas, till they had nearly finished playing “Cinnamon Girl.” Carolyn held it up & Ralph spotted the sign first, & then pointed a drumstick toward us & mouthed to me, “Are you’re Michael?” I nodded & mouthed back “Yes.” He nodded back at me... Then Billy spotted the sign & his face lit up like an infield fly. The biggest smile came over his face & the moment was magic & captured for all to see... Billy pointed the sign out to Neil, & Neil had this big grin on his face as well.. Job done Tami & done well... More on the sign later.... The best part.. — with Billy Talbot."

Neil Young played for exactly 3 hours. He blows young musicians out the water. A different class. Wow!

From Neil Young Films Alchemy Concert Movie In Melbourne, Australia | Live | Music News | Noise11:
by Paul Cashmere on March 14, 2013
With a capacity of 5000, tonight’s Neil Young & Crazy Horse at Melbourne’s Plenary Hall was the smallest room Young has ever played in Australia. Every other show to date has been arenas. The Plenary show was billed as a special show and indeed it was because Neil was making a movie.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse filmed this Melbourne ‘Alchemy’ show for their next concert documentary and by the set and the setlist you can expect ‘Alchemy’ the concert movie to be ‘Rust Never Sleeps II’.
Tonight, Neil Young fans got to see him up close and personal for one of his most ferocious shows ever, with thanks to his band of pitbulls, Crazy Horse. I challenge any musician even two thirds younger than 67-year old Neil Young to go a few rounds with him on stage. He would destroy you musically.
I’ve seen Neil Young on every one of his Australian tours and by far this was his most powerful. In total, three hours from head to toe. Neil Young & Crazy Horse were like a hurricane this evening. Tonight he was totally switched to 11.
Let me start at the end. After ‘Cinnamon Girl’, Young threw away the standard setlist played in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney and played a completely unique set with a few rarities over the extended hour. All of the other shows ran for two hours and 20 minutes. This one was exactly three hours.

A transcendent night just blows everyone else away even at 67.

"Encores: Hurricane, Dangerbird, Barstool Blues, Sedan Delivery, Prisoners, Opera Star, Cortez"
WTF AAAAAAHHHHH what an AWESOME ENCORE
Just got back from the gig at 1.15, 3 hours of the most AWESOME music I have ever heard passed in a flash, good job I am going again on Friday at Rod Laver, a night I will never forget, such a beautiful noise. Long live the HORSE.
F.....king incredible... 3 hours of total bliss.
Best set list of the US & OZ tour so far ending with Cortez the Killer, Dangerbird, Barstool Blues, Prisoners Of Rock 'n' Roll, Opera Star, Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black), Sedan Delivery & Like A Hurricane.
Neil, Poncho, Billy & Ralph, Melbourne Luvs ya!!!
My son said Neil played a "Great choice of notes" in the solos.
My 504's were vibrating from the sound level! The audience was so into it and Neil & Crazy Horse delivered the best concert I've seen in 25+ years.
What can I say but "Thank You" Neil & Crazy Horse.
Just 1 encore Like A Hurricane. All new songs after Cinnamon Girl
I'm sure that after what sounds like the gig of the tour that Neil and the Boys are going to put an end to playing A Day at the Green and do gigs at arenas like Plenary and the like, not one whinger so far, as if you would whinge, what a setlist, awesome, I am envious thought I did see the Perth show and that rocked I can only imagine how this firecracker sizzled
can somebody get that guy a new T-shirt!!
EPIC
Neil prefers warm weather, and some sun and sand is exactly what they needed mid tour...
The bar has been raised incredibly high. Where do they go from here? Come back home boys! We miss you!
Some observations on what was surely one of the greatest of the greatest shows by Neil Young and Crazy Horse:
When the Australia and New Zealand tour was first announced, I predicted that Melbourne would be the site of an epic concert. Of course, that was for Rod Laver Arena--this one wasn't on the itinerary at that point in time. So maybe there's another equally epic one still-to-come?!
Truly amazing set, with a song selection that literally ran from A (American Stars and Bars) to Z (Zuma). By my count, you lucky folks got to hear:
American Stars and Bars 1
Everybody Knows This is Nowhere 1
Harvest 1
Life 1
Psychedelic Pill 4
Ragged Glory 1
Rust Never Sleeps 3
Trans 1
Unreleased 2
Zuma 3
During one concert, within a three hour period they played Cortez and Hurricane, Danger Bird and Barstool Blues, Cinnamon Girl, Opera Star, Walk Like A Giant and Ramada Inn, Heart of Gold, Sedan Delivery and Hole In The Sky, Powderfinger, Love and Only Love, Born In Ontario, Twisted Road, Singer Without A Song, Prisoners of Rock and Roll, and Out of the Blue (Into the Black). Has there ever been a better set list than this one?! Has there ever been a musician and a band better than this one?!
There's white smoke over the Vatican right now, and we'll have a new Pope soon. It's a beautiful day and Spring is almost here in the US. Thanks for the reports and the good vibes!
You can be in my dream
If I can be in yours

So does anyone think the author of the review knows what he's talking about when he says Neil was making a movie last night? That would explain the extra/different songs. We can only hope! I know they've filmed all the shows......
I want to know what key they played 'Barstool Blues' in...doubt they did it in E like on Zuma...actually I believe the album version is a capo on the 2nd fret but the song is still in E...in 'Year of the Horse' I think they do it in B so Neil can actually sing it...
Man oh man back in 1975 I'm sure there was some - ahem - "assistance" in hitting those high notes...
burn off all the fog & let the sun through to the snow
Damn Melbourne got a treat!
Yes come back to north america for a fourth leg of the horse! Please Keep dangerbird and barstool on the setlist. And since the small venues are the best, do a residenct at the Capitol Theatre in Portchester NY
"Neil Young Films Alchemy Concert Movie In Melbourne, Australia". That's the title of the Melbourne review. Does the author know ALL the concerts have been filmed? Then again, this show was special! We can only hope they make a movie out of it.
@Mr. Henry - I don't see a song from Trans???
Opera Star is off of Reactor...
@Mr. Henry - I don't see a song from Trans???
So far no fucking doubters have shown up, so allow me:
"What, no Harvest Moon?! I've always been a big Neil Young fan, but this concert sucked."
Okay, got that out of the way.
Another way to look at this performance was that the setlist spanned 1969 to 2013. 44 years. Talk about your greatest hits...you Melbourners witnessed musical history the other night. Good on ya!
When neil young & crazyhorse come over to the sacred isle to the north,i dont care what songs they play its all good stuff and this will be like a dream come true to see neil with the boys,i bet the Liverpool gig will be his best over
here,when rodger waters played his
world tour gig in the "pool" he said it was the best crowd he had played to on his world tour in 2008
and even gave a y.n.w.a shout to the crowd.come on neil we want a three hour gig to rock our socks off to.
I'm afraid he does and this will be a one of. proof:
- Ralphs reply that this not likely will be repeated…
- the Melbourne show was added at the last minute and labeled as 'special'
So.. if at least Danger Bird and Barstool remain on the list!!!
Sounds like an awesome show - saw them in Sydney and that was amazing - and seems they topped that one off - as previous poster said, a little envy showing now :)
I love Barstool.
I'm envious as hell!!
SJ
This tour just keeps on giving.
Amazing set list and yes, lets hope the film rumours are true. They were filming in Adelaide too so lets hope some of that footage makes it. Then I can tell my Grand Kiddies; "I was there..."
So glad the doubters have stopped whining.
Sedan Delivery ? Makes this doubter into a believer ! Ive been waiting for that song since August. Pls someone post a youtube clip

Oh and Neil - I know you are reading this :) .. so ..
Let's see a nice Bluray of this tour with Plenary as the base, and songs from the other shows (Roll Another Number, Mister Soul etc) as extras.
That's my next Christmas gift taken care of *wave*
Last time Neil performed a 3 hour (180m) set outside of Canada & the US was 1974 with CSN&Y in London at Wembley Stadium (Sugar Mountain stats).
I was front right of the stage on the rail (arrived at 5:30 to queue at the top of the escalator) and had the best experience at a concert.
Cortez, Dangerbird & Barstool was the highlight and the music flowed through my veins.
The audience at Rod Laver tomorrow are in for a treat.
and 178 minutes in 2001-07-24, Sportpaleis Ahoy', Rotterdam, The Netherlands
w/ Crazy Horse
To quote Stevie Wonder,
"I'm too high, I'm too high, hope I never ever come down".
The Plenary gig was transcendent.
I don't expect the Horse to match it at Rod Laver, but really don't care.
To have been there, was to witness some of the most alive and truly live, performance moments. Neil was right out there, and the Horse did there best to follow. The guitar work was awesome's big daddy, and the Crazy horse harmonies, angelic.
Danger Bird...what a treat! It was so slow, the whole thing was in danger of stopping mid air, but somehow, miraculously, the bird flew, and soared. Incredible. Sedan delivery and Barstool blues, also unforgettable. It felt like we were carried into a timeless space, and honestly, I could have stayed all nite in that space. It was amazing to see the time at the end.
There was magic over the band, and magic for all with eyes to hear, see and feel.
I've been to many NY gigs over the years.
Nothing...nothing comes close to this gig.
Thank you Neil.
Thankyou Crazy Horse.
Godspeed to you and yours,
see you on Friday nite for more 'hit you in the heart' music.
I've thrown away all my medicine.
I've taken the cure. :-)
I remember my mama saying
I want to be
On this windy road
For eternity
I'm makin' the change
I'm keepin' my faith in you

Hope some of the others show up online!
Prisoners of Rock and Roll, Opera Star *and* Hurricane on the same night? Horse Heaven in Melbourne! July and Cologne are so far away...
This might be my favorite of a myriad of Neil boots. Complete show totally on fire. Show opener Sedan Delivery, Rock in Rio 2001. Just glorious

Thanks Jonathan for your note on Opera Star! I did that Comment in a bit of a hurry and jotted down a note with the tally of songs performed. My head was thinking "Re-ac-tor" but my fingers wrote down "Trans", which I then Trans-scribed (ha ha) directly from the note. As my old HS English teacher used to say, I "gestalted the wrong word". Probably too much multi tasking and not enough sleep lately.
Thanks also to Peter D for your Comment about this being a last minute show. I was wondering about that; it wasn't even listed on Neil's site. Let's see what the next one brings.
And thanks to Thrasher for the shoutout and album correction in the follow-up story. As Cole Porter puts it, "you're the tops".
By funny coincidence, I was checking through my vinyl collection yesterday around the same time and came across my copy of Reactor! And it is right nearby to another vinyl album from The Corin Tucker band, with her personalized autograph and a note to "Keep On Rocking In The Free World". Never even mentioned Neil, she must have read my mind.
Also my copy of Time Fades Away was right near those, so I checked it out for the first time in ages. Ends up I have a UK Import version that has lyrics sheet included. I'll need to go back and check those stories to see how many others mentioned the same type.
Happy Pi Day everyone!!!
p.s. To anyone who is following The Americans, you might recall the FBI chief (played by Richard Thomas aka John Boy Walton) saying "My mother used to say that coincidences are God's way of winking at you". I love that saying! Never heard it before and I'll be sure to use it whenever appropriate.
