Neil Young should ditch crazy horse and go back to his roots.

My favorite musician.

My worst concert ever.

Oh it only took 1 concert for these 'anonymous' guys to return, how wonderful. Here's to ruining more comment threads.

At 3/02/2013 06:32:00 PM, Blogger thrasher said...

No worries SD, anyone reading that comment would know its bogus.

Everything we're seeing and hearing is that the tour is epic.

Neil is down deep in his roots -- his Crazy Horse roots.

At 3/02/2013 07:42:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Absolutly agree with Anonymous 3/02/2013 05:45:00 PM!

Neil should never have forgotten about his roots like he did way back in 1969 when he first played with Crazy Horse.

In my opinion he totaly lost it when he stopped doing what he did best:

Instrumental surf music!

You know like Aurora and The Sultan. I mean NOBODY did anything like that in the early sixties, but proto grunge and a rootsy mixture of rawness and beauty in all of the Horses ragged glory? Totally lame!

At 3/02/2013 07:51:00 PM, Anonymous James said...

To the people who are going to any of his upcoming shows, you're in for a treat

From start to finish I was in awe of a man who I've been a fan of for many years

Hats must be taken off for his sound, lighting and stage crew. Easily and I mean easily the best sounding show in a stadium sized venue that I've ever been too

One gripe - I know people pay their money and have a right to an opinion but please, don't walk out 3 songs into a Neil Young and Crazy Horse show, because he's not 'playing the hits', 'this type of jamming should be left in his garajjjjjjjj' & 'I just wasn't expecting this'

If your going to a show involving Neil Young then always expect the unexpected

Thanks Neil, you made me a happy man - I'll live with that show for the rest of my life

At 3/02/2013 08:02:00 PM, Anonymous SD said...

I could never imagine leaving a show early, even if if I didn't like the music. If I paid to go to the show, why would I not stay? It's not going to hurt me.

And that surf rock instrumental comment had me dying laughing! Nice one!

Been a Neil Young fan for over 30 years. I think he and Crazy Horse should have got a room instead of carrying on with the self indulgent wank they dished up last night. More than half of the concert was the three of them in a little circle playing with each other and ignoring the audience. I was very disappointed. The highlight of the night was dinner with my wife before the "show".

At 3/02/2013 08:54:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you Neil and Crazy Horse. The energy, playing, sound quality, set list, Neil's voice and the whole stage show were fantastic and to be in the front row less than 10 metres from one of modern music's masters was a pleasure that will not be forgotten. Thank you again.

At 3/02/2013 10:12:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wanted to walk out because of the heavy on & on & on of instumental stuff, so boring! But I paid over $100 for this & just kept waiting to hear what made him a hit all those years ago, but alas, wasn't to be. So disappointed, at least I thought the ol' man could have at least sung it. Turned me off old boys touring in future, a real rip off!

At 3/02/2013 10:12:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was disappointed. Very self-indulgent. I know he moved on decades ago, but a lot of people paid to hear some of the early stuff. His rendition of Heart of Gold had no heart. My guess it's he's lost connection with his old music.

I sure hope those shirts and pants of Neil and Poncho made their way into a washing machine sometime since December...or maybe poncho decided that cutting off the sleves was, in the end, easier than applying some Tide... :)

Also, the setlist I saw had Needle and The Damage Done, but he played Heart of Gold instead in that slot. It was one of the highlights, and a nice surprise for anyone following the setlists.

Magnificent performance. And the new venue seemed to have their sound system right ... Sounded perfect from where I was.

To @James - heading from the ACT to Sydney for the show next Sunday - can't wait. Not sure what my wife (who is only a casual fan) will make of it all - but will buy her a nice dinner just in case.

I also don't get the folks who expected Harvest or more 'hits'. I count 8 of 14 songs on the set-list from older albums?

I had to laugh at one of the comments on the Perth show from some joker who said radio is for new songs and concerts for oldies - I don't think I have heard Neil on the radio with a new song for 20 years or so. Radio here is mostly old tracks or aimed at the teen set.

A true legend indeed but i too left early. A self indulgent racket of loud grungy guitar and these veterans getting off on it instead of playing the true classics i came to hear. Neil needs to realise what and who made him famous, classic songs and people paying money to hear them. What a crap set list of long winded same same songs. Where were the classics? He played one and that was an acoustic cop out. I was one of many people who walked out extremely disappointed. Neil was trying to be young instead of Young. What a wank and what a waste of money.

here is the first youtube clip showing up here in Canada (where it is still saturday). HHMM. Interesting: jump to the 7:00 mark, and Neil and Poncho take it to a place I have not seen myself before...the pace of their playing there looks practiced...that is not where they would normally go with that song (or any song for that matter)...so perhaps they been practicing (LOL).

I'm a massive Neil fan, and saw them 5 times last year, but a little disappointed they're playing the same exact set still. I thought they'd at least switch it up a bit!

Sounds like it was a pretty awesome show and I can't wait to hear the new tunes! I suppose the only negatives are that Love and Only Love was played as the opener last time he came to Australia as well. Would be nice to change things up a bit. Also, Roll another Number is a lame song to end the night with. Should have been something epic!

Forever a forgotten city when it comes to Australian tours for many artists I am so stoked that Perth has finally got a quality venue to do good bands justice but Neil and Crazy Horse would have sounded equally at home in my garage.

It all began with Neil and all the crew standing on stage for the Australian National Anthem once the giant amps and mike had been set up.

First up was Love And Only Love which built up into a nice furnace of Crazy Horse musicianship and soloing from Neil.

Batting at number 2 was the durable Powderfinger which featured 3 or 4 solos.

First Pill song was Born In Ontario one of the shorter songs of the night that chugged along nicely

A huge highlight was the mesmorising rendition of Walk Like A Giant complete with a thunderous coda from the Horse

The nights ecological moment came with a new song! the heart rendering Hole In The Sky I loved the sound of this tune

Neil yet again pulled out the unexpected with Heart Of Gold taking the spot of Needle and The Damage Done. Well received as you would respect the song I'm fairly sure was a #1 in Australia too way back when.

Neil and acoustic live really brings to life the rather brilliant tale of his Twisted Road.

Having a huge afternoon on the pints I timed my toilet break but catching the first and last 30 seconds of Singer Without A Song.

The tremendous Ramada Inn which I was most looking forward to experiencing did not dissapoint, a solid tune played with passion and up there with the bands best work with Neil.

Neil announced that the analouge time machine has finally made it to Australlia but the band were keeping it to themselves this was followed by the familiar and grooving crunch of Cinnamon Girl

The crowd got right into F*!#in' Up complete with Neil and Poncho's banter with the audience, hilarious and fierce performance.

Followed up by the oldest song of the night,Mr. Soul.

Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)with Neil stuttering the F-F-F-F-Fade ala Daltrey rocked with its usual force.

Don't Say It's Over, Don't Say It's Over

Neil and the band took a brief hiatus and returned to play a tune from Tonight's The Night, off course it was the crowd fave Roll Another Number which my my favourite live version I've heard of the song.

Fellow Australians, get around Neil and Crazy Horse because you never know if this is their final bolt or they make many happy returns.

You cannot miss this show!!!

Unbelieveably good as it was in Perth in 1985 . Neil saves something special for Perth , he loves us as we only see him two to three times in a lifetime !

Singer without a Song Neil needed the lyrics on hand , I thought it was a highlight into a new direction or album for Neil but who knows !

If people were expecting his "classics" such as Needle and Old Man they should've gone to a solo Neil Young gig. I got into him from Pearl Jam and EV but even I knew he wouldn't play songs from a solo album at a concert with a full band. He's a machine!

People should go to Sugar Mountain and check out the set lists.....there is not a lot of variety on this tour...but so be it.
It's all one song...when it comes to the Horse.
If people don't know Neil by now, they don't know Neil.
Bimbadgen and Sydney for me....he can play the same set...but I keep calling up Elliot Roberts and saying Elliot, it has been a long time since Neil played Down By the River here in Australia.
It is time!

Some of these commens crack me up! One tweet I read said "Was excited to see Neil but prety disappointed in the set list. I loved "Heart Of Gold"! But there was a bit to much guitar throgh the show...(oh my I laughed)
So folks, make sure you look at Sugar Mountain for Neil set lists.
You are not going to see a huge variety....But I am pestering Eliot Roberts for "Down By The River" once on this tour!
Who knows where!!

So happy (and a little jealous) for all the fans Down Under!!! This is an epic tour for anyone who is even remotely open to Neil and CH ... for all the decades Neil has been putting out new material and genres its still almost unimaginable how good these guys are sounding right now and how impressive the songs he's playing off PP are ... in an industry rife with talent Neil is a totally unique force ... I have no question that the stuff he's playing off PP stands up to EKTIN material ... 100 years from now when neither is considered new material fans will revel at these albums equally ... and likewise the shows Neil's putting on now, and those the last 5+ years, will stand up with any bootlegs from the last 40 ,,, this is the golden age of Neil enjoy this and naysayers be damned pack up your pettiness and find another place to rablerouse ... there is no coherence to your criticism and your can't deny THE TRUTH!!!! Long Live NEIL!!!

On Saturday night in Perth, Neil Young and Crazy Horse gave us a glimpse into their incredibly enduring brotherhood of noise. Old songs, new songs, all crafted by a sublime songwriter who has always done things the way he wants to. Some musician try to chase trends and bend to public fancy. As has been so eloquently displayed throughout his career, any seeming compliance with current musical trends by Neil is purely coincidental. Neil invited the crowd to immerse themselves in the passion that has so captivated and stimulated him for his entire life.
His claim that he has an almost telepathic understanding with Crazy Horse is easy to believe. A few nights ago in Perth, this connection was palpable. Two hours of pure sonic bliss. Chugging country tinged tunes, gorgeous acoustic interludes and all tied together by punishingly loud guitars and feedback that sounded as though Neil and the Horse were wrestling thunderbolts. Neil played like a man truly possessed, wringing soaring, often brutal and unearthly notes from his instruments. Sure, some songs clocked in way, way past the obligatory three minute mark but I didn't go to see a few radio friendly pop tunes. I went to see an artist who loves performing and loves his musical creations like every one of us loves our own children. Pure, simple and without reservation. On Saturday night, Neil Young and Crazy Horse strolled onstage, plugged in and proceeded to tear the roof off Perth Stadium. There are no more superlatives, the show was an absolute triumph.
