Concert Review of the Moment: Neil Young at Massey Hall, Toronto, May 10, 2011

Neil Young - Massey Hall - May 11, 2011

The Concert Review of the Moment is from Neil Young at Massey Hall, Toronto, May 10, 2011 by Alex:
This was my first Neil Young concert even though I've literally been obsessed by the man for the past few years.

During the show, I distinctively remember thinking that seeing Young live is as impressive and strange as it would be seeing the other voices that changed my life (Lennon and Cobain). It is just strange that Neil Young has been there for almost 50 years and MOSTLY that he's totally at the top of his game.

The show for me was exhausting, in a good way. Exhausting because there was no laying back, it was intense from A to Z, just living through all these emotions but also not being able at all to relax to a song I don't know or don't enjoy as much. Everything was simply fascinating. I had the chance to meet two Rusties who have seen Neil about 40 times and they both told me after the show that this was a show defined by the amazing guitar work. And it was... The acoustic performances were stunning, unlike anything from Canterbury to Dreaming Man... The new acoustic guitar is CRAZY. You Never Call, Love and War and PVB were simply stunning. And the White Falcon with the Lanois electronics are stunning. I'm amazed that an old player like Neil would change his rig after so many years... Old Black is just fine but I'm definitely happy with the change. I will forever remember the strange, raw, beautiful and ethereal performances of Cortez the Killer (so wild), Walk With Me (incredibly touching and raw, i cant help but think of ben), Hitchhiker (the energy in that!), After the Gold Rush (beautiful), Ohio (rightfully angry) or I Believe in You (beautiful, again).

Neil is amazing and is perhaps the most brilliant performer alive because he just forgets about barriers... I see the Le Noise era as something that's as innovative as the Rust era, the Dead Man material and the Weld/Ragged era! It's an untamed beast of its own. Just like Sonic Youth, Nirvana or Syd Barrett, Neil Young is an artist that can't be pigeonholed... He has discovered his own voice and he's consistently reinventing it. Thank god music has creative souls like him.

Alex

Thanks Alex! Good to hear you had a great 1st Neil show. And thanks Ed B.!

Concert Reviews of Neil Young at Massey Hall, Toronto, May 10 & 11, 2011

Neil Young - Massey Hall - May 10, 2011
Photo Credit: Tom Pandi - Toronto event photography | Examiner.com

From Neil Young Solo Tour rolls into Massey Hall | Examiner.com by Tom Pandi:
Sitting beneath a single spotlight, Young set the tone for the evening from the very first chords, and as My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) filled the hall, an intimate and thoughtful performance from this one man band was on the horizon. Winding its way through Young’s legendary career, the set made poignant stops in all the right places – cruising from his solo beginnings, through his times with with Crazy Horse and CSNY and right up to his latest album, 2010’s critically acclaimed & Juno winning Le Noir.

From Concert Review: Neil Young at Toronto’s Massey Hall | Ampersand | National Post by Scott Deveau:
For those who have managed to catch a Neil Young concert sometime in the latter phases of his storied five-decade career, you’ll know that despite his 65-years of age, he’s nowhere near retirement.

Whether its packing stadiums, or playing to thousands in the open air, the legend of Canadian rock still has plenty of spring in his step, and can rock harder than most hard rockers.

But while I’ve been lucky enough to see him strut his stuff on stage a handful of times, nothing compares to seeing him live at Massey Hall, the iconic venue in his hometown of Toronto, where he played the first of two back-to-back, sold-out shows Tuesday to close off his North American tour in support his latest record, Le Noise.

From Concert review: Neil Young brings Le Noise to... - Toronto.com by Ben Rayner:
A guitar hero to end all guitar heroes, Young — who moved between a couple of still-tentatively plucked acoustic guitars, a Gretsch White Falcon electric and his beloved Les Paul, “Old Black,” throughout the night — delivered the evening's most disarming and genuinely touching moments, however, when he dropped the six-strings and settled in front of the keyboard.

A report from Sharry "Keepin Jive alive in T.O." on rust.

Neil Young will be performing tonight at Massey Hall, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Special guest Bert Jansch will open concert.

Concert Review of the Moment: Neil Young in Chicago, IL, May 6 & 7, 2011

chicago-theater-sold-out-marquee.jpg

The Concert Review of the Moment is from Neil Young in Chicago, IL, May 6 & 7, 2011 by Kimball :
Thrasher and rust people, I loved the Friday and Saturday night Neil shows.

First night was 2nd row balcony, second night was 6th row from the stage, center aisle. I was also at both Ryman (Nashville) shows last year, and these are just the most recent in a series of Neil experiences much like a passenger train where each individual car is its own space, decorated in the theme of its particular tour, but colored and textured in its own way and ever so uniquely.

When I compare what I saw and heard in Nashville to what was presented to me Friday night, all I can say is that Neil has grasped the Le Noise reins and charged the rest of the way into wherever it is that the Le Noise hitchhiker reigns. The thing that struck me over and over and over both nights was this: Neil is 100% dedicated to being at the right place to get this presentation out to us, in its purest form, as it must be inside his head.

It's like this, he's workin' like a mad man to get to the place where it can come through him, to us. Simple as that, and if you don't see that when you go to the shows on this leg of the Le Noise tour, I think you're missing the keystone that makes the whole presentation glow, quiver, tremble, flash and erupt.

There were several new twists in Neil's performance since I saw it in Nashville (June '10), the most powerful of which are related to Neil introducing a few sonic textures that harken back to the Le Noise record itself. My favorite and the one that really blew me away is where Neil put some staccato breaks into a repeating guitar sequence, and it was 100 times more powerful with them than it was without them.

Down by the River and Cortez, played from the Le Noise tour place where Neil's at right now (leading up to the Massey filmings), are as pure and raw as I can imagine these songs, every note is wrenching, meaningful and emotive, no motion is wasted, its all simply a complex rendering of the art that in its most perfect form in Neil's mind.

I really wonder how close he is to showing us exactly what he's trying to do? It's really coming out so strongly now. If he's ON at Massey, and Demme captures it the way I felt it, THIS film will be the document that will define Neil's artistic mastery for centuries.

To everyone going to Massey, especially Doug Tuned4Life, make the most of this opportunity to get close to Neil's muse.

Kimball

Thanks Kimball! Wonderfully vivid.

Concert Review of the Moment: Neil Young in Cincinnati, OH, May 3, 2011

Quite a bit of reader pushback on a rather weird review from Cincinnati.com | Neil Young: Rockin' in a weird world by Chris Varias. It appears that critic Varias was caught off guard by Young's off beat setlist. Offbeat? Imagine that?

Apparently just another lazy music critic that didn't do his homework.

A rebuttal from ElisabethssMom:
I think a more appropriate heading for this "article" would be "Neil Young: Rockin'in a Real World of Love and War." A better lead into the review would be "The stage setup gave an indication of the musical genius of Neil Young that would soon fill the concert hall at Tuesday night's concert at the Aronoff Center’s Procter and Gamble Hall."

Neil was in perfect form re-creating his beautiful musical journey of loss, redemption, and deliverance. What's weird is that many of the people in Cincinnati including Chris Varias are only hearing about Neil Young "Le Noise" as a "new" release when it's been out for some time. One of the songs won a Grammy award. "LeNoise" has been written up in major newspapers in major cities, it's all over the internet, and the show's set list hasn't changed in almost a year.

What's weird is that neither Chris nor many of the audience members had no idea who Bert Jansch was or his significance as one of the greatest acoustic guitarist of all time -- the guy who Jimmy Page found as an inspiration.

And from our dear Mother Nature on the Run:
Extra-Terrestrial Lands at the Aronoff Bringing Message of Love

Did you see him?

I was there, I saw the whole thing. A silver space ship landed on the side of the Aronoff Theater in Cincinnati on May 3rd and left a trail of sunshine behind. We've had blue skies now for 2 days!

There was some aggression directed toward the message the alien was bringing but the louder the waves of the inebriation crashed onto the stage, the stronger the alien became. In fact, his message ricocheted around the concert peeling off colors from light spectrum so fluidly that it entered into the bloodstream of every human there making hearts pound harder and harder. We felt the building shake, too. It knocked my camera right off the ledge shattering on a spotlight and evaporating into thin air!

We felt pain, heartbreak, and hardship. We felt death, loss, and sorrow. We experienced forgiveness. We found love and war. Then we heard a "Rumblin'" in the theater so loud it knocked my glasses clear off my face!

Not everyone understood the message the alien was bringing to the young, the old, and the restless that night but there were at least a thousand who walked away feeling a connection to each other once again. A connect to life and a connection to our personal responsibility to embrace each day with love and respect for each other -- for the planet.

The message from the alien was, "Walk With Me. Walk with my this journey of empathy, love, compassion, kindness, and hope.

"Walk with me."

So I am.

Thanks Mother Nature on the Run!

And Happy Mother's Day MNOTR!
