CONCERT REPORT: Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse @ Roxy Night Club, Los Angeles, CA - September 20 & 21

Then & Now: Roxy Night Club, Los Angeles, CA
 (Click photo to enlarge)

Last week, Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse performed at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles as benefit concerts for The Bridge School and The Painted Turtle.

The albums Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and  Tonight's the Night
were performed at the historic Los Angeles venue.

Here is an eyewitness report from Pail via Chris Morris on Facebook (Thanks Harold!)

The only way I can explain it is my karma must be unbelievably good right now.

Idly looking at Facebook on a not especially wonderful morning yesterday, I was surprised by a message from a very good guy I’ve known in the music business for many years. It seems he had seen one of my posts about the Roxy, and he asked me if I’d like a ticket to see Neil Young’s 50th anniversary benefit show with Crazy Horse there Thursday night.

What was there to say but “Hell yes!”

A large throng of mainly upper-demo fans, each of whom held a ducat worth four figures, lined Sunset a couple hours before showtime. My friend rolled up the street, and, as he has a good deal of swing, we slid into the VIP check-in area where we instantly encountered Roxy co-founder Lou Adler, whose charity the Painted Turtle, with the Bridge School, was the evening’s recipient.

We admired the new mural celebrating the anniversary, just painted on the side of the club this week, showing some of the biggest acts that have played in the room. By showtime we were standing in the club’s packed VIP section.

The show took the same form as Wednesday night’s: Young and the band played “Tonight’s the Night” and “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” in their entirety. Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina, the rhythm section on the Roxy’s opening night in 1973, were on board. Young fans were the beneficiary of Bruce Springsteen fans’ misfortune, as Nils Lofgren, currently on leave from the E Street Band due to the Boss’s postponed dates, returned to the Santa Monica Flyers for the Roxy anniversary engagement.

Filling out the lineup was Micah Nelson, Willie Nelson’s son, who has supported Neil regularly in Promise of the Real, the group fronted by his brother Lukas. Let me just get this out of the way: The only small club show I’ve seen that matched the thrill of this night was the one by Bob Dylan I witnessed at the El Rey Theatre in 1997.

The night began with Young at the piano; he would alternate on the instrument with Lofgren, who doubled on guitar and played accordion on one number. At various junctures, It was difficult to tell, as he was sometimes obscured, but Nelson appeared to be playing lap steel, filling in for the late Ben Keith. Young, Lofgren, and Nelson would cluster at the center the stage, blasting away on guitar. The somber, intense, and more subdued “Tonight’s the Night” was played first, rightfully. It remains one of the more fucked-up records in the Young discography, anyone’s discography really, and its unnerving drug-bathed atmosphere can still supply a jolt.

The coke-burn opus “Tired Eyes” raised the night’s tallest hackles. But, for this listener, the high point of the first portion of the show came with “Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown,” which the Flyers apparently did not perform in 1973; played hard, it dropped the spirit of the late lamented Danny Whitten, whose fate inspired the album’s creation, on the Roxy stage.

After the second version of the LP-closing title song, Young and the band left the stage, and the crowd momentarily thought a break was in store, but within perhaps two minutes they walked back out again; Neil had doffed the white jacket he wore for the first part of the show. The PA volume went up quite perceptibly, and the Horse got down to business immediately with “Cinnamon Girl.” The overall performance of “Nowhere” was if anything stronger than that of “Night.”

The album’s lighter-weight numbers like “Round and Round,” “The Losing End,” and “Running Dry” (the latter with Nelson bowing his guitar in emulation of the late Bobby Notkoff’s violin work) all glowed. But, of course, the big, churning epics “Down By the River” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” predictably sent lightning bolts through the house.

My ears still feel pressure-sensitive this morning. As I left the storied old venue, with my souvenir ticket in my pocket, I stopped to thank Lou Adler — who was sitting by the front door on a folding chair, as if he were courtside at a Lakers game — for the many, many unforgettable nights he has given me at his club.

And I paused to consider how lucky I’ve been to have lived in the times that I have, to have seen the music I’ve been privileged to witness, and to have friends as good as I have.

Thanks,

Paul.

Thanks Paul, Chris & Harold for getting this report up and out.  So many would have loved to be there but were denied, alas.

So, Happy Anniversary Roxy! Here's to another 50.

The 2023 band closely approximates the line up known  as the “Santa Monica Flyers” at the Roxy in 1973. Only the late Ben Keith is missing.

The Roxy Theater concert was recorded during a run from September 20 to 22, 1973.

Young explains how Roxy - Tonight's the Night Live came to be:
"In 1973, I drove my 1947 Buick Roadmaster, Black Queen, to LA from the North, accompanied by Ben Keith. Once we made it to Hollywood, we met up with Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina. Nils Lofgren joined us and we drove to Studio Instrument Rentals on Santa Monica Blvd. David Briggs, producer, and Johnny Talbot, equipment manager, met us there. They had blasted a hole in the wall to connect the green board which we had set up (an old tube board I had purchased that had been used recording many historic sessions from the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds to Monterey Pop Festival, among many others) next to the rehearsal hall. Our 16-track analog tape machine was set up next to the board. We had finished recording TTN and decided to celebrate with a gig at a new club opening on the Sunset Strip, the ROXY. We went there and recorded for a few nights, opening the ROXY. We really knew the Tonight's the Night songs so we just played them again, the album, top to bottom, two sets a night for a few days. We had a great time. ROXY -Tonight's the Night Live is the live recording we made. There is a little Super 8 footage of us driving to the gig in the Black Queen one of those nights."

The Tonight's the Night tour concerts from 1973 are quite legendary amongst most long-time Neil Young fans. Many fans attending the tour concerts were bewildered by the experience expecting hippie acoustic sets in the post Harvest era, yet received loud, harsh, edgy electric sets. But time has since revealed the true masterpiece that the album Tonight's the Night captured. We have explored this topic in depth over the decades. (For more, see Thrasher's Wheat Comment of the Moment.)

For us, the raw Tonight's the Night recordings hold much value in peeking in on that critical timeframe: The Season of The Ditch. Producer David Briggs allegedly had a Tonight's the Night "raw version" which included all of the tape roll pre- and post-song recording. All of the studio, drunken, stoned chatter between the band, The Producer and The Artist. But the tape seems to have been lost to the ages...

Open the tired eyes.

On September 20th,  Neil Young is scheduled to play a 50th anniversary concert at the Roxy Night Club in Los Angeles, CA.

The 50th anniversary concert commemorates the opening of the Roxy Night Club in  September 1973 where Neil Young recorded what eventually was released as Neil Young's "ROXY TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT LIVE" in 2018.

ESSAY/REVIEW: "YOUNG SHAKESPEARE" by Neil Young | Bentley's Bandstand | NYA

REVIEW: YOUNG SHAKESPEARE | Bentley's Bandstand | NYA

In classic fashion, writer Bill Bentley "reviews" YOUNG SHAKESPEARE, Neil Young's latest album on Bentley's Bandstand | NYA.

We say "reviews" because if you have followed Bill Bentley's work over the years, you know he's a die hard Neil fan.  That said, when Bill writes, we read.
I listened once.

Then I listened again. I felt like you were sitting in a chair across the room from me, playing these twelve songs like you'd just written them. They were so alive and so personal and so strong, and your voice sounded a bit in awe of them yourself. Like maybe you were a bit surprised these were all your creations. Each time another song would start I would get the chills, like I was walking through a new door into a room I'd never been in.

Many of the songs had been on earlier albums and those original versions had always sounded cast in stone--"Ohio," "Cowgirl in the Sand' and others. But now, just you, your guitar and piano, and played them all like they were flowing from your heart for the very first time. You were twenty-five years old that night in Stratford, but the sound of your voice carried an eternal resonance that felt like you had landed on planet Earth carrying a timeless message from another land. It's hard to describe, but you didn't sound like someone on a theatre stage with an instrument or two. This was way beyond that. This music had a cosmic reverberation going on that really did bring in a new different reality. Something was happening.

As I played YOUNG SHAKESPEARE for the third time, I suddenly realized that if I would only be allowed to own one Neil Young album, this would be it.

Full review on on Bentley's Bandstand | NYA.

"Young Shakespeare" Album by Neil Young - Preview Track + Video: "Tell Me Why"

"Young Shakespeare" Album by Neil Young

A preview track and video for "Tell Me Why" from the upcoming "Young Shakespeare" album by Neil Young  is now available on NYA.

As noted here in 2020, Neil Young discussed the unreleased album and film titled "Young Shakespeare" from January 1971 at the Shakespeare Theater in Stratford, Connecticut as "the earliest known film of any of my performances."

Via press release:

Just two months after the release of his seminal After the Gold Rush, Neil Young sat down for a performance at The Shakespeare Theater on January 22, 1971. The Stratford, CT show captures the artist stripped down to the bare essentials—acoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica.

The concert was recorded for presentation on German TV later that year but was not publicly available until now. The original 50 year-old analog tapes have been lovingly restored, making available early acoustic recordings of two After the Gold Rush songs, early Harvest tunes, and beloved favorites such as “Ohio,” “Cowgirl in the Sand,” “Helpless,” “Down by the River,” and “Sugar Mountain.”

Young wrote on NYA that Young Shakespeare is, “a more calm performance, without the celebratory atmosphere of Massey Hall, captured live on 16mm. Young Shakespeare is a very special event. To my fans, I say this is the best ever…one of the most pure-sounding acoustic performances we have in the Archive.”

Young Shakespeare Deluxe (CD, LP & DVD)

Previously Neil tantalizingly teased that maybe he would pair "Young Shakespeare" with the 50th Anniversary release of "After The Goldrush" in 2020 as a double record.

That window has come and gone and it now appears that both albums are on the NYA Timeline as separate albums for 2021.

RELEASE DATE: March 26th with pre-orders for the album and film on LP, CD, DVD, and Deluxe Box Set beginning on Friday, 2/12.

While release plans remain uncertain, Neil tantalizingly teases that maybe he'll pair "Young Shakespeare" with the 50th Anniversary release of "After The Goldrush" later this year as a double record.

"Young Shakespeare" tracklist:
