Here is a Comment of the Moment on the upcoming album "Second Song" by Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts by Abner:

I have a few thoughts going back to the first time I heard the song. 

Nostalgia is maybe not quite right as it constantly intersects with the present. The song places the nostalgic in a deeply problematic relationship to the present, although this is not always literal. 

If it was just harkening back to the sunny mornings and saving dimes the song is very different and probably not worth all that much. But beyond this problematic relationship to the present is that the present is placing everything in jeopardy. 

There is the immediate fact, within the lyrics, that what we need and want will no longer even be possible. This reality then strips us of our dignity as we are the ones who have destroyed the possibility of a future for both ourselves and everything else. 

To me, the center of the song are the lyrics: "but we won't remember them, cause we're the ones who didn't care." If one is really paying attention these lines hit like brass knuckles while there is painful irony with the beauty of the song. The same spirit could provide a bonfire for an electric nightmare of another song. 

Second Song is beyond a warning, it is a collision with our reckless actions.

Thanks for the comment Abner. Intrigued by your take on Second Song as "beyond a warning". The tone here on "Second Song" is a bit more subtle than we've heard from Neil in recent years where he's been  borderline sledgehammer (see  "Talkin' To The Trees" album and "Big Change", for example.)

Dead Reckoning @ Haw River Ballroom, North Carolina  - April 7, 2026 

Caught the second Dead Reckoning show of two at the Haw River Ballroom in North Carolina and it was a very interesting concert experience. These shows sold out really fast and many long time fans missed out on tickets.

Some in the audience were strictly Welch/Rawlings fans and some of them left early because this was a tribute to the Dead and there wasn't any Gillian Welch or Dave Rawlings songs during the show. Going into the show I was thinking they might open with "Wrecking Ball," but that didn't happen.

Since this tour just came out of the blue and they were not promoting a new release some people around me said they only knew one or two songs from the set. Kind of similar to that Neil Young "Tonight's The Night" tour which was all new songs that were unreleased at the time.

Clearly, the tour is locked into the Dead's 1981 acoustic live album Reckoning and it is highly recommended to listen to that before the show if you are unfamiliar with the Dead. Both Welch and Rawlings have been doing Dead covers for a long time, but some of the fans didn't realize the importance of song "Wrecking Ball" to Gillian until now. In a recent interview the Dead influence on Gillian Welch is discussed at length in the Bitter Southerner piece.

From the rail of the first balcony, it was interesting to see the crowd reaction as songs were recognized. Once the song was clearly established, people on the entire main floor began to sway together. For my blood, this was not so much a cover band situation as much as giving these songs the Welch/Rawlings treatment and making the songs their own.

These two are sitting on live recordings going back to 1993 so it will be interesting what is done with recordings from this tour. Rawlings has been recording every show for years starting back when they were doing house concerts in Hickory, North Carolina that is sort of ready for release. Honestly, if they aren't going to release something from the Dead Reckoning tour, they really should allow a taping section at venues. At one time the duo was taper friendly, but that changed as they became more popular, but I never heard the specific reason it was no longer allowed after years of being OK with it. Yes, "Everything is Free" comes to mind in terms of their taping policy.

Another surprise is how similar Dave Rawlings guitar style is to Jerry Garcia acoustic playing. Sort of fits like a glove, but I'd never made that connection before. Rawlings has mentioned Neil Young as a major influence, but I'd never heard/read about a Garcia influence.

By the way, given the really deep Neil Young cuts the various formations of the Dave Rawlings Machine have done I hope a Rust tribute tour might happen also.

The Third Mind 3/14/26 @ the Tractor Tavern, Seattle, WA 

I was fortunate to be at an incredible live show last night. Dave Alvin's "Acid Rock Supergroup" The Third Mind played a show in Ballard, formerly Swedish fisherman's turf. 

Dave Alvin always plays "the Tractor" (as we call it) when he comes to town with his main bands. But the first Seattle show for The Third Mind took place at the larger  Crocodile Cafe almost 3 years ago. 

But now it's back to home sweet home at the Tractor  for Dave Alvin as well as his incredible new supergroup project. 

The Tractor is my favorite live music venue in Seattle. It is intimate & has good vibes all around. Dave Alvin always blows stuff up with his ferocious incendiary guitar attack. He has the masters touch with that Stratocaster. 

He was the powerhouse creative force behind The Blasters, writing all of their songs. His older brother Phil Alvin was front man singer & rhythm guitarist.

In this new group, Mark Karan is the 2nd guitarist, playing strong psychedelic riffs. Jessie Sykes is on vocals & acoustic guitar. Victor Krummenacher on Bass & the incredible Michael Jerome on drums.

The band was born from an idea Dave Alvin had to record in an improvisational & spontaneous way in the spirit of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew! 

Acid Rock was born in 1966 with Mike Bloomfield wrote East West with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The Third Mind are disciples of Mike Bloomfield, may he rest in peace. He was the guitarist for Electric Flag & they did a song called "Grooving ' is Easy, Baby" that this band plays very well. 

The show: Jessie Sykes sings sort of like Grace Slick, according to Dave Alvin. Together, they take songs that were R & B hits in the early 1960's and give it a psychedelic reboot. Acid Rock, improvisational & searing. 

This show was a spectacular psychedelic voyage for all present in the packed tavern. And who should I run into again but some Thrasher's Wheat regulars, Bob & Bruce! Jake is Bruce's son who I also met at the Micah Nelson Particle Kid show with these guys. Jake & his friend Willy D were in good position at the front of the stage. 

Jake told me that in his mind, his Dad & Bob are famous now since they were mentioned in the epic TW blog! It's all part of the TW community here in the real world, in person, at a stellar live music event! It was quite out of the ordinary! 

We had talked about this show the first time I met them, so we met up again as planned. And once again, we crossed the rainbow bridge together, hitch-hiking our way through the finer music galaxy! 

It was nearly religious experience for us all up close to the stage. Spiritual, life affirming, and also communal healing in light of the world we live in right now. 

Bruce & Bob were in the rail, job well done guys! My friend Dave was my copilot that night as we blasted forward, witnessing the synergy of this powerful band. They covered East West, & In My Own Dream (both by Paul Butterfield Blues Band). 

They played a few songs the Grateful Dead used to play: Dark Star & also the anti war, nuclear fallout classic, Morning Dew. The band spoke of these troubled days we are living in. When they played Morning Dew,  I had streams of tears flowing down my cheeks for the entire song. I saw the Grateful Dead play that song quite a few times. 

Dave Alvin sang a version of Highway 61 Revisited with some updated lyrics about a real estate developer gone bad! It was quite fitting & welcome. 

Jake had some fine chocolate to share & ended up with a new nickname: "the Candyman." Friendliness & great live music makes for a rebirth of sorts. 

The Third Mind is made up of professional musicians who get together for a mini tour when they can.

 

I highly recommend you check out this band live. Mark Karan shreds on guitar.  VK is solid on bass! Michael Jerome is crazy good on the drums! They are all so talented, but synergy makes this a powerhouse band.

Speaking of live music, I recently got to go see Micah Nelson’s band Particle Kid at a tiny venue. This is the 2nd time I have seen them live and both times were fantastic & magical.

I arrived after the show began & missed some of the first set. Micah Nelson's guitar player Milo Gonzales opened the show. Micah joined him on 2nd guitar & they had a female singer whose name I missed. 2nd act was Lila Forde. She was very good.

She covered "Woodstock" & "Can’t Find May Way Home". She played keyboards solo & she sang & played well.  Lila’s version of "Woodstock" was cool.

Particle Kid: This young band is exciting & they have huge potential.

I was enjoying the show standing 10’ back from Artist or so. A guy named Bruce recognized me from the TW blog. He told me he liked my writing at first. I said “You might have me confused with someone else; I’m not a writer.” He said Sure you are, from Thrasher’s Wheat.” Oh right! Hahaha.

Then Bruce introduced me to Bob, another TW regular. Bob builds custom guitars & he once gave one to Neil. Neil then gave him tickets to the Bridge School shows for years. Bob showed me a photo of Neil with the guitar.

Yes, Bruce & Bob, a couple of Thrasher’s Wheat regulars. Good people, & coincidentally they were on an interstellar journey, as was I!

Particle Kid is the right show to hit for a psychedelic experience. We were hitchhiking through the galaxy together.

Particle Kid dabbles in many forms. I loved their set. Micah is a great singer & guitar player, like his brother Lukas & their Dad Willie.

What a cool scene we have here at Thrasher’s Wheat! It was so nice to meet Bruce & Bob. They had a 3rd friend with them, like minded, whose name I forgot.

Micah Nelson is an original and very creative Artist who uses multiple mediums, film projection, etc during his sets.

He is a fantastic songwriter & performer. His rhythm guitar skills are impressive. He uses all kinds of lesser used chords.

Micah can sing just like his dad but that was not part of this night’s show . He has his own identity & his band is a unique & fun group to watch.

I have all of his albums except “Particle War” (with Sunny War, a collaboration. They do a gorgeous cover of the Clash’s “Lover’s Rock.” They make it their own. The Clash’s version being way different than this worthy new creation.

Micah was breaking down gear after the show. Thrasher had told me to say Hello from Thrasher’s Wheat, so I did. Micah was glad to hear that message & he returned the greeting & said to say Thanks!

I told him about Bruce & Bob also being TW fans. He was glad to see us all there.

Micah was specific in that he, the band & Neil really appreciate Thrasher’s Wheat. He said TW helps them keep track of things & more. And again, he expressed gratitude for this fine blog.

And he said that the band would be recording a new album next month! 

Sunny War is recommended to check out. Go see Particle Kid & get lifted up by his live music. Variety is the spice of life!

Forty Days and Forty Nights and Forty Years of Farm Aid

It appears to me that we are still engulfed in an extended period of trial and tribulation here in the USA.  Gone are the days of Peace and Love.  Folks on both sides of aisle aren’t talking to one another and when they do communicate they’d rather deliver a verbal tongue lashing via social media then sit down and hash things out civilly, eye to eye. The art of listening has faded away. 

Why, dare I ask, can’t we just get along?

Which brings us to Farm Aid, a concert and a non-profit organization all rolled into one whose mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. From my seat in the audience, it appeared on the surface that everybody in the crowd, the stadium staff and the performers got along just fine at Farm Aid 40. Everything seemed to go off without a hitch on the 40th anniversary of the festival. A picture-perfect day in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

But there were some things simmering below the surface for me that I hope the passionate readers of Thrasher’s Wheat can answer.  Don’t worry, I’ll get to the actual concert review and Neil Young in a moment.

Willie Nelson Prepares to Take a Bow w/ Farm Aid Board

Days before the concert was due to take place at the stadium used by the University of Minnesota, service and maintenance workers from the Teamsters Union threatened to strike putting the show in jeopardy.  Thankfully everything was resolved so the concert went on as planned but it made me wonder many things.  First and foremost, how would the Farm Aid Board have framed a concert-ending strike by the union?  My guess is that the Farm Aid Board and organization are composed of many union loving members.  Before you cast tomatoes my way, please know that the person typing this story has 2 jobs, his spouse has 2 jobs, and we belong to 4 separate unions between us. In my opinion, unions are good for many, many things and not so good for others.

Second question: Finances.  I’m not going to get into the “Where’s the Farm Aid money going?” rabbit hole.  The Chicago Tribune once did a story on that which rankled Neil Young to no end.  But I am curious about the quote from Farm Aid tied to a potential strike: “It is critical to understand that if Farm Aid 40 is forced to move or cancel, the financial impact could be devastating.  The expenses already incurred to bring this historic event to Minnesota may well threaten the survival of our organization after four decades of service to family farmers.”

Math is not my strong suit and I’m not the CFO of a major bank. Does it not seem odd, though, that the cancellation of Farm Aid 40 could have spelled the death knell for the corporation?  Ticket purchases were non-refundable so somebody was keeping that money.  Do the performers participate free of charge?  Is the money being made on the sale of food and merchandise, of which Farm Aid only gets a cut, the major revenue stream for the organization which ultimately keeps it solvent?  Perhaps this precarious financial situation is tied to Neil Young’s plea and major point at the pre-show press conference [see embedded video below] that he only wants your money for Farm Aid.  He was pointing his finger, mostly, at the billionaire class and mega corporations who should, in his view, be paying a Conscience Tax to the organization. Third: Performer harmony.  Fellow Hoosier John Mellencamp gave some short, blunt remarks at the press conference which had him heaping praise on Willie Nelson by stating that “none of us would be here without Willie and that “we wouldn’t have raised a f***ing dime if it wasn’t for him.”  True. 

But seeing as though Willie is 92 years young, in a show of harmonious brotherhood and love of his fellow man, how could John not join in on Willie’s concert closing numbers which brought many of the performers out on stage for rousing renditions of Will the Circle Be Unbroken and I Saw the Light?  If I missed John in the background, I offer my sincere apologies, but I was informed by a respected individual with many Farm Aid concerts under their belt that John is rarely, if ever, seen at Willie’s group closing songs.

Can we finally get into the actual music?  Yes.  I imagine that attending Farm Aid is much like what it was back in the 1950’s and 60’s when Dick Clark brought his Caravan of Stars on tour across the U.S.  You got a handful of songs by a great number of performers, just like Farm Aid. Just enough to wet your appetite and get you to go out and seek your favorite stars latest 45 single or long playing album.

Listing one’s favorite acts or songs at Farm Aid 40 is a hopelessly subjective endeavor.  But if you stuck around this long I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed Waxahatchee, Steve Earle, Billy Strings, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, the old Bob Dylan and the “newly crowned Bob Dylan” - Jesse Welles.  Jesse’s song Bugs immediately brought young Bob Dylan’s performance of Woody Guthrie’s Riding in My Car (Car, Car) to mind.

I hope you let me dwell a bit on Jesse.  He’s relatively new to the game with 3 albums under his belt, both self-released.  I bumped into him as he was taking part in a mid-day TV interview and I asked him afterwards if he was planning to come to Chicago.  He said yes, he had a couple of shows coming up in October.  As soon as I parted ways with him I looked up his concert schedule. One show in Toronto, Canada was listed before the two Windy City shows.  All were sold out.  By the time I’m typing this up, 47 additional shows around the entire world are now listed.  Almost all of them are sold out.  The kid has hit the Big Time!  And it’s well deserved as his guitar playing and singing were superb and his lyrics are clever, catchy and thought-provoking all at the same time.  You’re missing out if you don’t check him out live.

God bless Bob Dylan for showing up and rocking the house.  He did so totally unannounced at Farm Aid 38 back in 2023.  This time, he gave fans 3 days’ notice that he’d be playing in his home State of Minnesota.  Not faulting Mr. Dylan, but if he could have possibly had his name on the bill from the get-go, perhaps the audience would have been even larger which would have meant more…well you know where I’m going.  I may not have recognized all of his songs in his set but does it matter?  No. It’s Bob Dylan for God’s sake. Be quiet and listen.  All Along the Watchtower (also covered earlier in the day) and a be-bop version of Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright stood out for me.

The 5 members of the Farm Aid Board: John Mellencamp, Margo Price, Dave Matthews, Neil Young and Willie Nelson put on fabulous performances.  I was concerned that John’s guitarist had to be helped off stage for what appeared to be a medical reason.  He originally performed standing, then had a chair brought out to sit on before being brought backstage. He came back to finish the show. Hopefully all is well.  His songs Longest Days and Rain on the Scarecrow brought a somber mood followed by a full battle attack mode.

Well, if Neil doesn’t get sued into oblivion for copyright infringement over the use of the Chrome Hearts name, hopefully we’ll see him and the band on tour again in 2026 when the weather warms up and the swallows come back to Capistrano.  The band members are a young force to be reckoned with.  Old timer Spooner Oldham is there for a reason, although his keyboard playing for the 3 shows I’ve recently seen were almost inaudible.  Song highlights for me from Neil’s 7 song set were Long Walk Home and Be the Rain.  He had his infamous pump organ at the back of the stage but I  don’t believe he actually used it. Someone will correct me if I’m wrong.  Time limits may have factored in.

This was the year where I really noticed “The Growl.” Songs by Dylan, Mellencamp, Nelson & Young were not necessarily sung, but growled or spoken like a fine poem. A nod to the aging process which escapes no one. I’d rather hear them read the lyrics then not be up on stage at all.

All in all, an absolutely fantastic concert experience!  Will there be a Farm Aid 41?  Yes. Will there be a Farm Aid 50?  I don’t know, but I made a vow at this show with a nice fellow who graciously took me under his wing on his birthday and we promised to that be there together at Farm Aid 50 come hell or high water.  Happy Birthday Thrasher.  Thanks to you, Paul & Renee of the FarmAidians and everyone involved in pulling this great event together.

The 40th anniversary of Farm Aid concert will be held at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota  on September 20.

Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Margo Price, Billy Strings, and Waxahatchee among others will perform.  In addition,  Nathaniel Rateliff And The Night Sweats, Trampled By Turtles, Jesse Welles, Madeleine Edwards, and Black Pumas’ Eric Burton. 

Willie Nelson said in a statement: 

“Family farmers are the heart of this country, and we depend on each other for good food and strong communities.

For 40 years, Farm Aid and our partners have stood with farmers, supporting them to stay on their land even when corporate power, bad policies and broken promises make it harder to keep going. This year, we’re proud to bring Farm Aid to Minnesota to celebrate the farmers who sustain us and to fight for a food system that works for all of us. Family farmers aren’t backing down, and neither are we.”

A limited number of presale tickets at all ticket levels will be available beginning at 10am CDT on Wednesday, May 14 and ending at 6pm on Thursday, May 15 (or until presale tickets are sold out).

Tickets for Farm Aid 40 go on sale on Friday, May 16 at 10am CDT. Ticket prices range from $101 to $390 (including fees, sales tax will be added) and will be available for purchase at farmaid40.org.
