Neil Young Solo @ The Ford, Los Angeles - June 30, July 1, 3 & 5
UPDATE via Mike E2F:
Quick review: not a "never live before setlist" but still unusual.
Sound in the venue was fantastic.
Neil sounded real good.
17 songs: I'm The Ocean, Homefires, Burned, On The Way Home, If You Got Love, My Heart, Dream That Can Last, Song X, Prime Of Life, When I Hold You In My Arms, Mother Earth, Ohio, Days That Used To Be, Don't Forget Love, Heart of Gold, Love Earth, Four Strong Winds.
All were very well performed. Piano, acoustic guitar, Old Black on a few songs, some 12 string.
Great show!
Live premieres included "A Dream That Can Last", "Don't Forget Love" and "Love Earth" . Rarities were "Prime Of Life" from the album "Sleeps With Angels", which Neil Young had only recorded three times. "My Heart" , also from "Sleeps With Angels", " Homefires" , which has not been released on official albums, and the rarely played "Burned" from 1966.
Neil Young will have a solo residency at The Ford, Los Angeles on June 30, July 1, 3 & 5. Also, with special guest Chris Pierce as opening act.

Post-It on piano says: “When I feel better, I am taking you to the movies”. And supposedly another says “You are adorable”.

A Dream That Can Last
PRIME OF LIFE!!!
Song X !!!
It only shows 6
When I Hold You In My Arms
He asked if we wanted to hear Mother Earth or Mr. Soul before he played Mother Earth on the pump organ.
Wish he played a longer set, but it was phenomenal.

Only acoustic guitar ? No electric ?
Song X is Old Black. Ohio the Falcon. See YouTube .
i did stagehand work there in the late 90s...deer and other critters wud amble down the hill behind the stage to watch the goings on...a very unique setting there...and in a quiet moment, you cud hear the Hollywood Bowl applause of a show going on at the same time!

No Indian on stage?
Anyone know if the merchandise was cash only or credit cards accepted too?
This first setlist as a blueprint for this tour may still be subject to some major changes. But with the help of the invaluable Sugar Mountain database I can make out four different groups of songs.
1. The inevitable crowd pleasers and signature songs: On The Way Home, Ohio, Heart of Gold, Four String Winds, Mother Earth, Days That Used to Be (Smell the Horse coming up)
2.The unforeseen Danger: the three SWA and also the two Mirror Ball songs (last played 1995 and 1997 respectively, exception: My Heart as recent as 2019 with the Real and only once on this tour)
3. The wide curve balls: Burned (Springfield era, last played 2015), If You Got Love (Trans era, 1986), When I Hold You in My Arms (AYP, 2001).
4. Recent Solitaires: Don’t Forget About Love, Love Earth
# 2- 4 I would like to see make it onto a Performance Series release. But then: this tour could provide for many more rarities and as a European watching this tour unfold from afar I have to ask you to forgive me my speculations.
Regarding the speculative wishlist thread a while back on this blog there is only one of the songs mentioned there that has been played during this first concert: "I'm the Ocean".
Great setlist. Not a criticism, but surprised there wasn't anything from Tonight's the Night.
Is mother Earth really considered a crowd pleaser? :-)
And the other one he played that you did not account for on any of the lists/groupings was homefires, which is so great. Oddly, I think this is the third different tour on which I’ve heard him play it.
I meant to ask that, too, Seth, LOL. No way. I remember nothing but people talking over it every time he plays that one.
The Love Earth/Four Strong Winds encore vid is fun, playful. I obviously don't always pay attention as I always thought the chorus was Love-er lol. Has some fun w the crowd.
Added Throw Your Hatred Down for Song x and Mr soul for mother earth.
Thanks Seth!
Do you remember any of Neil’s comments made during the show that you can share?
While not a crowd pleaser "Mother Earth" for sure has become a signature song, because it is a song that you would expect to hear in a Neil Young solo concert. My makeshift categorization isn't perfect but an attempt to mark the the beginning of a tour that will evolve over the weeks. Throw Your Hatred Down (not as rare as Song X) and Mr. Soul (crowd pleaser) both fit in my categorization still.
Set list from tonight was stellar. Lots of deep cuts and his singing was much improved from a few weeks ago at Light Up the Blues. A bit short, but solid for a man his age (moving a lot slower than when I saw him last in 2018 with POTR and CH):
I'm the ocean
Homefires
Burned
On the way home
If you got love
A Dream that Can Last
My Heart
Throw your hatred down
Prime of Life
When I hold you in my arms
Mr. Soul
Ohio
Days that used to be
Don't Forget Love
Heart of Gold
//
Love Earth
Four Strong Winds
The Ford is a fantastic venue. Not a bad seat in the house. A little weird seeing Steven Spielberg there, but it is Hollyweird after all.
Also, Chris Pierce was a fantastic opener. Powerful songs delivered with deep emotion. Super nice guy (he signed records between his set and Neil's). If you are going to any of the shows, do not miss his set. And everyone buy his records!
There were at least 4 or 5 cameras on the stage, which I presume were recording. So, we may well see a video on NYA.

Looking at the pictures and videos I can't see Woody around or was he somewhere in the shaded stage background? Has Woody left the building? I always liked the idea of Woody reminding Neil Young that he once woke up with an arrow through his nose and an Indian in the corner trying on his clothes. I've always understood that it was then, on the last trip to Tulsa, that he left this early stage persona behind, fringed leather jackets and all. It came back as a Buffalo Springfield Reunion outfit somehow, but briefly.
No Woody. I seem to recall him addressing that on NYA sometime back, with heightened concerns around cultural appropriation/stereotypes.
Just a mention of one comical nature of the evening as Neil and his harmonicas were fighting the whole night. He had a bunch of them in some kind of holder and it must have been five or more songs that he had to remove the one he started with and switch it out. Even had a couple songs where he actually started the song and 30 seconds or a minute in stopped and did the switch. Loved the show, which pretty much matched what he tried to tell people he was going do with about 80% deep cuts, but 80 minutes on stage is pretty short. Hopefully he'll get in the groove and grind of performing again and get up to 20 songs a night before this tour is over.

Actually, seems Woody's status is a bit ambiguous at the moment. Here are relevant posts in NYA.

He had me at “I’m the Ocean” which was my #1 most hoped for song for the tour. I hope he plays it up in the PNW!
I’d love to hear some recordings! I can’t wait to see what he plays.

Any merch updates?
Posters? Shirts? Media?
I agree 80 mins is short for a show from him. Maybe just getting warmed up let's hope.
Posters, shirts, conductor hats, even conductor overall. All very steep.
No plastic beverage containers, supposedly per Neil's request.
The industry has figured out people will pay exorbitant prices. We were at Dead and Co this weekend and they made a killing. 4 Different $65 posters...

Is someone able to share a photo of the merch booth? Please and thanks

Vampire Blues. Did anyone pick that one !? Oh yeah.
Never thought Neil would tour again post-COVID. Miracles do occur!
On the original deep cut thread from a while back only Alan made a good guess with "I'm the Ocean", "Vampire Blues" was not mentioned by anyone. In a Neil Young song lottery with the exception above we all would have drawn blanks with regards to rarely played songs. I wonder whether these songs from "The Visitor" have a chance to show up.
According to Sugar Mountain, the last show was 71 min long... Very short but NY is 77 y old and he's back on the road after 3 years... It's almost a miracle. And, moreover, he's not doing a best-of tour (or an integral Harvest album performance) which could provide him a lot of money. Thanks, Neil.
June 30th is available as a timeline concert. My advise would be to listen to it on the app, way more stable than via the website.

Thanks so much everyone for the comments and reports.
Especially E2F and Barefoot Floors!
As Neil concludes residency tonight, we've been enjoying the 1st night stream on NYA.
Neil's comments after I'm The Ocean on AI are - as usual- highly prescient.
That Neil, so far ahead of his time, many fail to comprehend.
We say as we peck onto the Black Mirror...
As always, the problem and solution is in our collective hands.
We listen. We hear. Will we comprehend and act?
Past is prologue.
Onward...
further.

I have 2 tickets to tonight's (7-5-23) Ford Theater show (row F) but cannot go. I will sell at face value but I cannot thru Ticketmaster because they are not Ticketmaster tickets. Will have to meet in person in Westwood. Text me at 310-593-1965

When everything goes to shit play Lucinda Williams . Then take a walk. You'll feel better.
Sadly, we could not make Coastal. We're simply relaying request by Thomas. IOW, we honor requests. SMILE

I liked last night's show (7/5) more than my first one (7/1). Played 18 songs by staying at the pump organ and playing both Mr Soul and Mother Earth. Personally, by playing Earth and Song X last night I was able to see all songs performed except the two specials, Vampire & RITFW he threw in on 7/3, shoot.... I believe much of my extra enjoyment was hearing the the songs I was more unfamiliar with a second time. I do enjoy artists playing deep tracks/new songs at times in shows but that was proof to me that knowing the songs really does help in the enjoyment of the performance. Hope all of you up and down the coast enjoy and look forward to your comments from the larger venues.

Technical difficulties on the TCotM. I got through all of 7/1 but the last 5 minutes and they pulled it. I think that was all the songs though. It was the middle of Four Strong Winds. Haven’t gotten to rock the ‘91 NC show yet, hope it’s back soon. But no rush on it, those get added to the album flow now. I did call I’m The Ocean in the deep cuts thread, which sounded amazing. He messed up real bad by not playing any other of my picks, but it was still a great show, and he has time to add them all to the Berkeley set.

Tomatron: there were issues with 6-30 as well, but at least got the chance to hear it before it was gone again.
Thrasher: not sure if you allow someone sharing a capture of the Timeline concert, if not, please tell GDTRFB1971 to remove his final post.

I flew in from London to see two shows on the 3rd and the 5th.
Neil was sensational - I'm the Ocean was so moving and a highlight. He closed with a rowdy Rocking in the Free World on 3rd which was fantastic.
This crowd was clearly full of fans - all tickets sold on pre-sale at a fair price - loved sitting next to a blind dude called Michael on 3rd - who knew more about NY than me! Great guy
The range of tracks was astonishing - from so many different era's - Days that used to be was so good - as was Don't forget love.
Hope he manages to bring the show over to Europe - Neil did so well and knew his audience well here - felt he was playing for these particular fans.
Chris Pierce was a worthy opener too - loved his voice and songs too.

Apparently the setlist by now has reached a stable sequence order. Dropping the plan to have these concerts streamed (a reaction to the capabilities of wayback machines?) i want to believe a Hearse Theatre release and / or a PS release project become more likely. In the meantime I am surprised that Neil Young is keeping up with his LTTE chores. At 77 and on tour one would expect that these things would have to wait. Take it easy, man, not all fans are like Screaming 'scriber Wayne.
