Neil Young Working on Archives Volume #4
In response to a Letter From Germany by Timo, Neil Young replies that he is planning to work on Archives Volume #4 in 2023, as well as, release Archives Volume #3.
In another letter reply, Neil states:
"Volume three is now complete and will be released this year, hopefully on the first half. I had to go back in and make some changes at the last minute, and that held things up a bit."
In another letter reply, Neil states:
"Volume three plan is first half of 2023. Volume 3 and 4 are focusing in on the original performances. I find them fascinating! So pure….no thinking…."
Alas, "no concrete tour plans" for 2023, though.
Back to the upcoming Neil Young Archives Volume #3, last year we published some "informed speculation" on what the release might encompass.

So, where are the informed speculations regarding Vol.IV?
I very much want Vol3 Disk 8 to be the original version of Old Ways.
OT: the new Iggy album (Every Loser) that came out yesterday is definitely worth a listen.
As I've stated here before I sure hope he includes the live piano/guitar call/response version of "Down By The River" with Hargus "Pig" Robbins in V. III. It might be the last chance to release it. Only time I heard it was at a memorable gig in Rochester, Michigan called Meadowbrook.
While I also wrote about the Grey Riders in the New York City published, Variety, this journalist got the same impression I did:
“Then there were the darker moments of the show. “Down By The River,” a bewildering tale of love and murder – the stuff of traditional country-roots music-was a searing display of Young’s guitar playing. Long, anguished sustained notes, troubled call-and-response patterns between the singer’s Les Paul instrument and Hargus “Pig” Robbins piano conspired to turn the 10-minute concert climax into a chilling virtuoso display. Back to the program - my Harvest 50th finally arrived - Harvest Time is very special and worth the price of admission alone - the sound on the BBC dvd is beyond awful (obviously this’ll be a temporary issue assuming we all get replacement discs) - the book is a lovely addition - the demos: while some feel it’s a bit short i like that Neil is curating his archives selectively and not just dumping endless takes of the same song, barely indistinguishable mixes etc that you never end up listening to more than once or twice
Neil has been thinking of us fans a lot, release evidence shows. An embarrassment of riches.
Even music Gods can retire, or retread. But when Shakey is standing still, he is still moving forward!
He is incapable of not working, so it would seem. He will be playing live for us again, in some manner.
We have a load of wonderful upcoming releases on the way, NYA 4. Don’t complain, Santa is listening!
Atmospheric rivers / Superstorms from Global Warming can be a Bitch. That warmer air holds more water. High tide is starting to flood streets & homes here and there in Florida, SF, San Diego, and other places in the US, as seen during with the recent King tides. Global Warming harkens the scary times of 1963’s Cuban Missle Crisis. The young people today are again, as Dylan said, afraid to bring babies into this world.
Just in time for the water wars. Some would have us polluting our precious water for reasons not well understood! Coal ash in rivers, pipelines under rivers?! Bad idea! Who’s Gonna stand up and save the Earth?
