Video of the Moment: CSNY w/ Tom Jones - "Long Time Gone" (1969)
Well, we've posted quite a variety of strange things over the years but this is one of the odder ones for sure.
We recall having a audio cassette tape of this but completely forgot about it. We seemed to recall that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were on the This Is Tom Jones TV program but didn't realize that Tom Jones actually performed with CSNY on the song "Long Time Gone".
From our friends up on Sugar Mountain come the details of the recording on 1969-09-06 at ABC Studios in Los Angeles, California. CSNY also performed "You Don't Have To Cry".
Recorded just weeks after their 2nd public performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, CSNY were a very hot act. And Tom Jones appears to have wanted to get in on the deal.
So strange bedfellows indeed.
Maybe not as strange, but Tom Jones performed at the 28th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert in October 2014.

From comments on our original 2012 post, the version of LONG TIME GONE aired was a sloppily edited combination of (at least) two takes. (thanks asg!)
Another priceless comment from Mother Nature on the Run:
I would put money on it that Tom Jones's pot was probably much better than what David was smoking at the time, square or not.
The only difference i could tell at the different concerts was that the ladies threw their undies at TJ while he was performing; the ladies weren't wearing anything underneath at CSN&Y.And another comment from RanWiz:
This clip is a great example of that 'synergy' that can sometimes (not always) occur when disparate musical backgrounds 'jam'.
Especially during the 'first exposure' between two different types each musician is 'pushed' or 'pulled' into a musical groove they've never exactly been in before. Something new results from the fusion - and the musicians know it on the spot. Rare, fleeting, exceptionally interesting to watch/hear.
I've seen, and know the music of all these folks - never conceived of them being together - expands ones horizons.
As Tom would say ... "'It's Not Unusual' ...

That is a Hot version and Tom Jones is killing it. Great performance! Thanks for posting. And they are all playing acoustic guitars? It sounds like there is an electric guitar in there. Alan in Seattle
For '60's TV, yep, pretty smokin. But those were the semi-golden TV days when these kinds of programming choices seemed to be more acceptable.
If you look closely, you can see a number of edits that appear to be from various takes.
Hard to say what exactly we're seeing. The tight closeups w/o instruments are most likely dropin edits.
As for the electric you're hearing, wouldn't be surprised if there was audio editing magic going as well.
This is incredibly cool. I had an older brother who loved CSNY and who introduced me to Neil and another brother who was a Tom Jones fan, putting them together seemed like peanut butter and sardines, but I have to take a look and listen. Thanks for more fascinating stuff Thrasher.
Great cut! Tom Jones nails it as do the rest of the guys especially Stephen. Neil is playing electric guitar along with Greg on bass and Dallas on Drums.
There is only one acoustic guitar in that video (the one Nash is playing). Crosby is playing an electric 12-string and Neil is playing lead on his orange Gretsch.
Thanks for clarifying about the instruments. That makes sense. I thought I heard Neil wailing impressively on electric and then thought from one shot that he was holding an acoustic. I will need to watch the video again. I am impressed by Tom Jones. He’s got a lot more soul than most of the white guys! Great version. Totally live, I think.
Love it. Another surprisingly fine collaboration on YT is Tom Jones with Janis Joplin - "Raise Your Hand." Great fun.
Tom Jones was one of the most underrated and under appreciated singers of the 1970’s. Perhaps it was the clothes, but he had a real quality of making the songs he covered uniquely his own. Great range and a fearless approach to everything he sang. Several years back I saw his performance at Glastonbury and he had that crowd on their feet the whole set.
Peace 🙏
