That Day That Neil Young Came to Charlottesville, Virginia
Remember that day that Neil Young came to Charlottesville, Virginia?
This past weekend, we reminisced on "That Day" over on radio station WTJU.net (91.1 FM, Charlottesville, VA) on an extended edition of "Why Sleep" with DJ Alex Shoabi, where we played played extensive deep cuts by Neil Young as a special guest host.
The program began on very local angle with "All Along the Watchtower" by Neil Young (w/o Crazy Horse) in concert with the Dave Matthews Band, recorded live at Scott Stadium on UVA's campus in Charlottesville, VA at a BamaWorks Benefit on April 21, 2001.
Check out the crowd reaction when the heavily favorite Dave Matthews Band hometown crowd realizes that Neil Young has walked on stage.

Also, a concert memory of the moment from H2OFace (Aer) on PLAYLIST: Neil Young Deep Dive | WTJU.net - 91.1 FM:
Yes, back in the day, I was connected, and Coran Capshaw set me and my kids up in the 4th row at Scott Stadium for the benefit.
It was sure weird to see Neil open for Dave. Not my favorite place to see a show - a huge stadium - but you take what is dealt. I could walk to it from my house! I wasn't going to miss it. In the early 90's before Dave hit big and DMB was still doing the weekly shows on Tuesday at Trax in Charlottesville, he would play some stuff live in the studio, then in the basement of Peabody Hall at the University, for the rock marathons.
I still have a recording of it somewhere.... fun stuff.
Great memories Aer! Thanks for re-connecting. We have a recording also ... that we found and played!
We recall driving down that morning with our rustie buddy Expecting 2 Fly and catching up with the NeilBillies Gang. Funny, but if you listen to opening of WatchTower you can hear this guy behind us freaking out: "OMG! It's Dave & Neil on the same f'n stage. i can't believe this!"
Another note on the day was how apologetic Dave was to Neil about Neil opening for him. Dave felt very strongly it was just wrong, although it was the right move for a Charlottesville concert.
And while we were broadcasting, someone called and said they knew you. But didn't catch her name. We did get some crazy calls during broadcast as we mentioned in comments yesterday. So cool that you were a WTJU DJ and "Neil & Beyond".
We're honored to carry the Rust torch forward w/ DJ Alex to a new UVA crowd. Can't believe you played the entire ARC?! We only played about an 8 minute heavy feedback chunk.
We'll keep "rockin' the boat without you"! Wahoo wah!
